With Ice cream sandwich coming out this fall or winter it seems like this phone might have came out at the wrong time. There will probably be an update for the sg2 or at least a port, but not sure if the experience will really be the same.
I am guessing I am probably going to move to the next nexus device when it comes out. I am just wondering how many people believe they will get rid of their gs2 within a year.

There will always be something newer and shinier on the horizon. The S2 is currently (arguably) the best android handset you can buy. Even the recently released dual core competitors don't seem to stack up against it.
Personally I adopt a 12 - 18 month cycle. In that amount of time large leaps can be made in technology and I can still get my moneys worth out of the current device.
The new S3 (not the nexus prime which is very sketchy on details and release timeframe) is touted to be a 1.4 Ghz dual core with NFC - not really a huge leap forward and not enough reason to get rid of my current S2, especially given the fact that CM is almost out for the S2 and worse case scenario (or best case ) we can go to icecream S via that route.
till see a perfect " pure google "phone .. hoping the rumors about Nexus Prime are true
I will probably keep it for the next 2 years. As someone else said we might get Ice Cream Sandwich officially or unofficially. Doubt i might be attracted by another device for at least a year, apps and games are still poorly optimized for dual-core devices, let alone quad-core, if they get launched by the end of the year. As i'm not a fan of 3D mobile phones and i consider S2 to have the proper screen size for a mobile phone, i guess it's safe to say i'll be keeping the S2 for 1 - 2 years. I still have my HTC Touch HD which i kept for 3 years and i gotta say the only reason for changing it was the desire to try Android OS. In terms of battery consumption WM does a lot better job than Android and my 3 old HD's battery beats the hell out of S2's, while doing the same things.
18 month contract, so easy decision really.
As soon as the Sensation gets S-OFF I jump ship, going to the Desire HD (my backup phone) upgrade. I like the 4 soft keys too much and most of all, as a music phone, I find the SGS2 doesn't quite has it in term of sound AND volume. So now I'm reduced to show off during the week with my dual-core SGS2 and having the Desire HD during the weekends, for teh love of music! DSP manager+Android Music app v3.0 don't give the same result on DHD and SGS2, you can't even compare. I have 9.6 GB of music on my 16GB microSD, the only thing preventing me to get a Sensation is the locked bootloader.
HTC screwed it up perfectly on this one!
f.
For the price of this phone, I am hoping two years. But as new phones come out over the next year it will make it hard for a phone ho such as myself
Until it starts feeling outdated and slow... kind of like the feeling I get when I use my girlfriend's SGS after using the SGSII for almost 2 months now.
As of right now, the SGSII runs everything smoothly. No point in upgrading when I get no performance benefits whatsoever.
I will keep mine until something significantly better comes out.
Thanks to villainrom 1.4 the only big comllaint i had, battery kife, has been addressed.
Screen, speed, form factor and camera on this handset cant.be matched, and from what weve seen so far only the iphone 5 will come close any time soon.

I'm "stuck with this phone for two years" to use the words of my mother (I had to get the contract in her name) so I don't think ill be getting any kind of upgrade before then ,although my contract says I can upgrade May 2013 but I won't be doing this as by then ill be 18 and can get my own contract, then i'm hoping to move to a 12 or 18 month contract, so I can keep up with the latest hardware.
Hopefully Samsung will be sticking to the 18month update thing that they announced at Google IO, so it won't feel to outdated.
I don't really see any major hardware changed happening for another year (most quadcore chips are scheduledfor Q1 or Q2 2012 launches) so we will probably find a similar situation to late last year when all new phones had very similar specs.
2 years, unless I find myself with a lot of disposable income.
5-6 months. haven't kept a smartphone longer than that (except the htc desire, which i used as my flash-happy android phone side-by-side with when i had an iphone 3gs/4). As for my next purchase, leaning strongly towards whatever the next nexus is!
I upgrade around every 6 months so I guess it will be December time! To be honest unless HTC come up with something superb I reckon I'll be waiting on the next Samsung beast...... Hercules anyone??
Regards.
Till Galaxy SIII comes out
allready sold.. was nice, to have the best smartphone for a while.
But I wait till something better hits the market
Something more Flawless.
SGS2 was pretty near, but the battery turned me off
With 2 days battery life, I wouldn't even sold it or would buy a new.
Hope SGS3 will be flawless
18-24 months at least i'd say.
what makes you think Ice cream sandwich won't be good on it btw?

6 months. Max. If Samsung will fix at least half of currently available bugs. Actually, last night i wanted to smash it to the wall.
@ AllWin: what sort of bugs? I've been pretty thorough with the phone, and haven't found much at all. Although I'm putting Kies asside here - if you are including that then fair enough
I'm loving the phone (just got one week ago.) Two possible gripes that will see me seriously consider and test the iPhone 5 when I can upgrade again (9 months).
Battery is a little gripe, although I'm hoping it will be better with time - do my usual of put on everything possible (in this case, 3G, wireless, Bluetooth, GPS, amazing looking live wallpaper galaxy something or other). I do use all the above. I'll start switching things off one by one after a week until I'm getting a full day of my usage out of it.
Secondly, I know it has been said before. but the syncing progress feels very old fashioned and cumbersome compared to the iPhone it replaced. I have spent a lot of time working out hwo to make this as simple as possible. Only time will tell if it continues to be a gripe.
If I can deal with the above, then I love the phone, and Samsungs vlingo which actually works and from a technical point of view would be happy waiting 18 months or more.
Until it stops working.

2 years or until it breaks
Firstly I'll just say hi to everyone (this is my first ever post on XDA)
And yea, almost 2 years after the Nexus One was originally released, I am just about to own one.
I've had a HTC Legend since May 2010 (I was unaware of the Nexus One at that time, because of this buying the Legend has always been a mistake IMO), and I'm tired of it, plus it has lots of software issues, and I've never really thought or attempted to root it.
And so, with my Legend's performance getting worse day by day, I thought I'd get myself a present for Christmas. I considered the Galaxy Nexus, but as I was buying the phone outright, I just couldn't justify paying £510 (+ shipping) for it, and ended up buying a new N1 from Amazon UK for £275 (that price includes shipping).
Since waiting for the phone to be delivered, I have been obsessing over vidoes of it, and forums. I have actually looked at around 100threads on this forum (how sad?!) over the last 48 hours. But, in the course of doing so I have become smitten with this community and the help it offers to those who ask for it.
So I look forward to joining this well established community, and finally owning a Nexus One!
Greetings Dorset,
Enjoy your Nexus One
Yours Sincerely,
Surrey.
P.S Good choice of phone, but look after that power button! (Trackball wake is a must).
Yeah the Power Button issue definitely concerns me, but I'll probably root after a few months, just so I can be sure that the rest of the hardware is okay.
In terms on Custom ROMs, everyone seems to have CM7 on their N1. Is this generally considered to be one of the best ROMs, or is there another reason for its popularity?
Oh, and Hai Surrey
Also make sure to make use of changing the color of trackball notifications. I don't one an N1 anymore [ I went to an HD2 since], but I loved the notification light on the trackball more than any other phones notification LED.
I'll definitely be making use of Trackball notifications for sure.

Basically, this phone is too underpowered for properly running Sense builds, and the ones that were ported have always been with problems, the only relatively stable one being Froyo Sense 1 build ported from Desire by eViL D:.
This leaves it with stock, CM7 and MIUI.
Personally, for this phone I prefer MIUI - IMHO it's far more useful than CM7, containing many nice Sense bits while being small and fast (smooth).

I beg to differ.
HyperSense is perfectly stable, as is Revolution (though he continues to add features and change things up so issues could arise in new builds). I use HyperSense as a daily with absolutely no issues.
As for MIUI, I'd agree that its a great choice also...though i ALWAYS install LauncherPro because i love the features MIUI packs but absolutely derad the iPhone look.
Just my .02.
Welcome to XDA man!
phone is not underpowered main disadvantage is it lacks internal memory when talking about sense roms.Despite of this many people have successfully ported gb sense to n1 without graphical glitches ( thanks to kernel developer fogot name ) other bugs.go ahead and try;u will definately love them

I happened to have N1 and MT4G at the same time (now the N1 is gone), and I can compare their performance first hand.
N1 is seriously underpowered, graphics-wise and storage-speed-wise, to run Sense.
Internal memory disadvantage can be overcome by various SD-EXT utilization techniques.
And Sense doesn't have trackball wake.
dbasabe did great work, but it doesn't turn N1 into a capable Sense device.

Congratulations!
Not many people would like to buy a cellphone which was released one year ago since more and more new devices come out in a real fast way.
But believe me, you won't regret for this and hope you can enjoy it, if you have any problems in using your cellphone, you are welcomed to this forum!
I agree on the post above. I just decided to buy a Nexus one despite of all the high-powered android devices nowadays. I guess I just simply love the look and feel of this phone.
Anyway, welcome to the forum! A lot of good and helpful folks are here. Cheers!

Awesome! Glad I'm not the only one buying this phone after so long.
So far I am loving it. And considering the price of new phones, I really don't think you'd be getting much more over the N1 for what you get with new phones.
I will use this phone for at least 1 year.
I have the nexus since it's release to canada by google, no power button issue at all, cyanogen is one of the best rom for a lot of device, on the nexus it manage memory well so it's a good choice.
As far as this phone is concerned, it may not be dual core, but it's fast and the only missing feature compared to newer phone are 4G and near field communication, unless you need those you should be happy with the nexus one despite is age!
I personally doesn't see any justification to upgrade yet
besides the touchscreen failures .. its a great phone despite its age

I'm in exactly the same position as you! (and what's more, I'm also from Dorset ) Except my Nexus One came today! It's beautiful! I got mine for about £109 from ebay and I'm also hoping to root and install CM7, as that's what I had running on my old Motorola Milestone (which died and was the reason I bought this) Good luck with this device!
One of the reasons why CM7 is so popular, is because it is pretty much the only truly custom build based on AOSP out there. There are a lot of AOSP builds that are very basic and don't deviate much from stock, and then there are a much larger amount of builds that are based off the CyanogenMod code base. MIUI is one of those.
But MIUI does make a ton of changes to the CM base, just as CM makes a ton of changes to the AOSP base. It does make MIUI stand out of the pack of CM-derived ROMs out there. While it did start with the CM codebase, they have done an excellent job of distinguishing themselves and giving a completely different user experience than someone running CM.
There are definitely a lot of different builds out there for our beloved N1's, but the two that tend to push the envelope the most and add the most new features are CM and MIUI. Try both out and see how you like them.
And I would recommend rooting much earlier. I had my phone for 3 months before I rooted it, and after I rooted and put CM6 on there (this was well before Gingerbread was released), I kicked myself for not doing it earlier. It runs sooo much better than stock ever did, plus there are a ton of new features.

^completely agree with this guy here. I purchased my N1 (US though, not Canada ) at release. I've had not a single issue with power button or anything for that matter. Out of the "common" N1 issues, the only one I encountered was small dust or dirt particles under the screen. That's kind of my fault because I work outside and I keep my phone in my pocket where stuff does get in my pocket on occasions. I plan on eventually researching how to take the screen off and clean that stuff out.
As for everything else he said, spot on. Phone functions plenty fast enough and internet moves quick enough for my taste (and I use my internet A LOT including teethering to my PC as my main source of internet use). Though I would love to get a Galaxy Nexus, I don't think I can justify to myself (or my wife for that matter! haha) the need to spend $700 on a new phone.

^this guy is right as well. I use to work for U-Haul and I had my N1 for maybe 2 months, didn't know anything about rooting and such as it was my first serious smart phone (I came from an LG Vu) when some younger guy came in with an N1 (only one I've ever seen in person by the way besides mine, to this day) and we started talking about it and he asked me if I had force updated my phone and such. He told me about XDA, I joined up, and here I am today. I force updated with the update.zip that was on here, learned about rooting, and within a week after that I had my phone rooted and never looked back. Did a lot of CM nightly testing and such. I've used CM, MIUI, Sense...you name it...from developers new and old (still miss Evil's work!) and every kernel you can think of.
I'd highly suggest rooting ASAP and taking full advantage of this amazing phone

Hello.
I'm a Motorola Milestone XT720 owner and I love my phone. XT720 was my first Android device but since now it's an year old so I wanna change it with something better. As an Motorola user I experienced the locked bootloader issue, the lack of support from Motorola and the tone of unstable and full of little annoying issues ROMs. Now we have several great and stable ROMs but it was a long road we walk true. I personally like MIUI with LauncherProPlus but our MIUI and CM9 are not very stable and camera does not work, so I use CM7 which is also great.
So since I walk you true my Android experience I have several questions to ask:
- How do you feel in general for your Atrix?
- Does Motorola plan to unlock the bootloader?
- Does Motorola plan to update Atrix to 4.0 ICS? (I guess so cause now Motorola is owned by Google but I'm not sure)
- Are there really complete and stable 3rd part ROMs for Atrix in XDA.
- Would you advice me to buy another phone instead of Atrix for the same amount of money?
- I heard that Atrix's display fills with dust over time and it cannot be cleaned which is really annoying.
- How do you feel about build quality of Atrix. Is it easy to break/scratch/crack cause I use to drop my phone very often, about once every month or so and I already have some minor damages over my XT720.
Cheers and thank you in advance!
Without being rude buddy, there's a search feature and the first few questions you've asked are already answered.
Some of them should be obvious when you look in the development section too.

Whoa, a member from BG? Strahotno!
Okay, I'll try to help because I'm a nice guy. But this has all been covered before.
1. Read the n00b guide. It's stickied.
- How do you feel in general for your Atrix?
Love it. After a few tweaks (mostly just the raindrop fix) I think it's great.
- Does Motorola plan to unlock the bootloader?
Nope. Not gonna happen officially. There is a workaround though.
- Does Motorola plan to update Atrix to 4.0 ICS? (I guess so cause now Motorola is owned by Google but I'm not sure)
For ATT, yes. For international, probably.
- Are there really complete and stable 3rd part ROMs for Atrix in XDA.
There are some. They are complete. They are mostly stable. Read the Android Dev section.
- Would you advice me to buy another phone instead of Atrix for the same amount of money?
Nope. Maybe the SGS2, it's a toss-up.
- I heard that Atrix's display fills with dust over time and it cannot be cleaned which is really annoying.
Never had that problem in either of the two I've had.
- How do you feel about build quality of Atrix. Is it easy to break/scratch/crack cause I use to drop my phone very often, about once every month or so and I already have some minor damages over my XT720.
Strong, although it pains me to think about dropping mine. Put a case on it. Even with Gorilla Glass the screen will scratch. I have had a screen protector on my replacement one since day one.

On a related note, the Atrix is among the easier phones to repair your-self if you are into that sort of thing.
See http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola-Atrix-4G-Teardown/4964/1
I want to add that the Atrix received a repairability score of 9 out of 10. See step 15.
I bought my Atrix on opening day just over a year ago. I have had some issues, but nothing major. I am not very impressed with any of the new phones being announced. Some are marginally better is some areas, others not. None are close to good enough to make me replace my Atrix and that includes the newest Nexus from Samsung.

- How do you feel in general for your Atrix?
Love it. The hardware is very capable. The bootloader is unlocked. There are many great developers who fix and improve things for us.
- Does Motorola plan to unlock the bootloader?
No. The community has found a way to unlock the bootloader.
- Does Motorola plan to update Atrix to 4.0 ICS? (I guess so cause now Motorola is owned by Google but I'm not sure)
Yes. It says so on their official web-site. But it will take a long time. CM9 is in beta already on the other hand.
- Are there really complete and stable 3rd part ROMs for Atrix in XDA.
Yes, there are many great complete stable ROMs for the atrix. (Neutrino, Aura, etc)
- Would you advice me to buy another phone instead of Atrix for the same amount of money?
Atrix has the best hardware for it's price. I doubt you can find anything better in this price range.
- I heard that Atrix's display fills with dust over time and it cannot be cleaned which is really annoying.
No, it doesn't.

The build quality is really good. I do use my phone in an otterbox case, so it still looks like new after 6 months of use. And if you drop your phone often, I recommend using an otterbox as well.

Among the stable (though maybe not the complete) are a few CM9 roms (jokersax/kang) based on ICS.
I really appreciate all your answers. Tomorrow or on Monday I will be a proud owner of my own Atrix. There is an offer for 289€ with two years Bulgarian or one year international warranty without a contract to operator so it's an awesome price for an awesome phone.
Thank you all for your answers. Really helped me.
I hope I can be in help to the community soon.
@ stewartsoda - Ти си страхотен, приятел.
hi im a zte blade user but am looking to buy a new phone. ive done research on this phone but wanted to know whether this phone is really worth the upgrade? if anyone can help answer a few question that would be awesome
- is this phone fast, in terms of games, multitasking and just browsing through the screens and app drawer etc
- what is the rom development like for this phone, do you reckon it will get any of the latest updates soon?
- is it worth £130?
thanks in advance if anyone can help
- Yes, it is quite snappy. I have yet to find something that will make it unacceptably laggy or slow.
- The latest complete release is Gingerbread. Newer releases (ICS, JB) are in the making and should be just around the corner, it all depends on when will Motorola release their own version so devs can extract proper hardware drivers from it.
- Is that brand new? Then sure, otherwise it can easily be found for significantly less.
i think this is a pretty good phone.
1) Yes. Very snappy and smooth. And thats on GB. On JB (unofficial CM10), it flies! Totally awesome!
2) Rom development...well, its not that bad, but could be better. We have all the latest roms available, but as of right now, we only have one dev that actually owns an Atrix. Others devs are blind building. Not that they are doing a bad job, in fact, they are doing terrific job blind building, my respect for them.
3) Don't know. Got it for around 170$ used a couple of months back.
Offtopic: Lets wait for ATRIX_LOVER to come in, and flame this phone like there is no tomorrow. Lol.
If I broke mine I would be searching Ebay for a good deal on another Atrix 4G.The one I have now I got for $162.50
It's a good phone for the money you pay. Very easy to repair, so if you're on a tight budget, broken screens etc are a cheap fix compared to other phones (no glue used etc.) You can get a cheap lapdock, for less than the price of gs2 you can have a pad and a phone.
Performance wise, Tegra 2 benchmarks about the same as a dual core 800MHz chip of the current generation of phones. Not rocket fast, but definitely smooth enough. Games compiled for Tegra 2 perform much better than you would expect as the ulv geforce is a competent GPU. Lack of neon extensions means that apps not optimised for T2 take a performance hit. This will become more of an issue as time goes on; T3 has simd extensions put back in so there's little incentive for developers to keep two code paths. It does have an unlocked bootloader available, a huge bonus for dev support. On the other hand, being a Tegra 2 based phone means it will never reach the popularity of the likes of sg2 or some HTC phones.
We are promised an official ICS ROM within the next couple of months, you can expect good support up to Jelly Bean: after that, not so much.
Imho, it's a bargain for the prices it's sold at, especially if you get a lapdock at the same time. You get a phone and a pad for, essentially, the price of a low/mid range phone.

It's a good phone. £130 seems like a good deal. I wouldn't pay anything above £160 for it.

Unless Android's next version still uses ICS drivers.
thanks for all the replies,
i can get the phone used for £130, which is on its own (no lapdock) i think that is a good price and within my budget.
i cant seem to find any other phone with similar or better specs at this price unless someone could point me in the right direction?
thanks again

You might be able to pick up an LG optimus 2x for slightly cheaper than the atrix. It has the same tegra processor as the atrix. Even has hdmi. Main difference is that it has 512mb ram whereas atrix has double that.
I've used both and there's no noticeable difference in performance when running the cm7 roms.
If it's possible you might want to wait and see if either phone is getting official ics. The LG owners are in a similar position as us regarding updates

For a little more you could get an HTC Sensation. I'd say that the Sensation is harder to unlock and has pluses and minuses from the Atrix. Personally I prefer the Atrix but the Sensation might be a better bet forthe future given the liklihood of ongoing support/development.
Hey, I'm being offered a used defy for a good price and I'm wondering if I should buy this phone now or save some money for my next option, which is Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V (which is supposed to be updated to ICS). I'm asking this because the defy's last official update was 2.2 and, even though I know about the fantastic scene behind this phone and the hundreds of custom roms, I'm wondering if in 6 months or a year this phone will be as useless as my SE X8
Go for it.

Hey If it is cheap (compare to ebay used defy prices) go for it! It's a sweet little phone, and it does survive a lot of abuse. It is starting to show it's age though, but if you update it with a custom ROM from one of the awesome devs here (i'm on jelly bean with paranoid android - cheers to skeevy420 and brajesh.sharma87) it'll be like a new phone!
Main reason I have one is for it's outdoorsman type qualities...and it's small...
It is cheap considering I don't have a lot of money, companies here force you to "upgrade" to more expensive data/minutes plans to get new phones and that the company I'm in has the most expensive prices in the market (can't change companies now).
What do you mean by "it's starting to show its age"? I mean, I know it won't ever be officially updated past 2.2, but, does it get slow or buggy with newer roms? I'm asking because of my experience with my ****ty SE X8, which is awfully slow since 2.2 (last update it got was 2.1) and new roms are all buggy (BIG bugs like sd-ext being screwed up every now and then, and having to restore a NANDROID backup)
Moved to Q&A. Please ask all questions there, thanks.
This was already talked around here, not recently, but I remember seeing a similar thread some half a year ago.
Defy is almost 2 years old, with all the goods and bads. Officially it's on 2.2, nothing extra. CM7.2 works like a charm so you could get it to 2.3.7. CM10 is pretty alright, but I gave up on it after a few days of slowness and more battery usage. Maybe in a few weeks it will reach the official stable status.
Most probably nowdays you'll only find the Defy+, which has 2.3.4/2.3.6 (not sure about this) from Motorola. With this one things might be a little tricky with alternative ROMs (especially CM), but I cannot talk from my own experience.
If you're not into modding and changing every piece of your phone's software, you're good to go with Defy+. If not... I, myself, wouldn't buy it again.
On another side... depending on your pre-pay options and how much you use (minutes, MB, etc), maybe you should do some math and see if it's worth signing a contract.
Here in Romania, for example, buying a phone with a 2 years contract is a bad investment overall. But you don't have to pay those few hundred euros at once.
So think about it from every point of view...

Same **** here in Argentina, I would sign a new contract, the problem is that my dad pays for it and he doesn't want to pay a more expensive plan :/
I'm kind of leaning towards buying it, the only thing that worries me is that the person selling it told me that there's one button whose light is darker than the others. Could that mean the screen is malfunctioning or that the button may eventually stop working?
