Get the nexus one or wait for the HTC supersonic?

Idk what to do because new phones come out every 2 months that are better and make the previous models obsoletee! Should i get the nexus one or wait for the HTC supersonic? Do you think the nexus one will loose its value over the next 6 months if i decide to sell it?

I disagree; better models being released do not make a phone obsolete. Sure it means you're not on the bleeding edge of technology, but your nice new shiny phone will not degenerate into a piece of rusty scrap metal overnight. It will be a long time before these phones are obsolete.

I can't answer this as a quick Google produces conflicting accounts regarding quality, what stage the phone is up to regarding development, etc.. The specs I've read are also "leaked" (see: subject to change or may not even be true at all).

It wont lose all of its value, obviously, but it certainly can go down just a tiny bit in price. I'd say get a Nexus One and sell it when you're ready; just make sure you take care of it, keep all original boxes and manuals, all plastic wrappers and casings, etc so you can get the maximum amount of money possible for it.

heheh...seriously...if your opinion is that a new, bigger, better phone will be out in 2 months, then perpetually wait for that phone! based on that statement, you'll never feel comfortable buying a new phone.
do yourself a favor...buy a nexus one, enjoy it, and when you're tired of it, buy a new one.

A phone backed exclusively by GOOGLE is not going to loose any value.
Any other phone is just that a new phone. But a phone sponsored by a company I.E apple (iphone) Palm (pre) Google (nexus One) etc. Fall into a different category.
At the end of the day people look at google and know their phone is the nexus one so that adds value to the device.
Plus i prefer to be backed by google all the way. This means that the moment a new release is out in the AOSP rep the google backed phone will have first dibs on it so youll always be up to date.
Perfect example is look at the htc devices and motorola. 2.1 Been out for q month now and the only phone with it officially is the nexus one.
The other devices are not making the leap to 2.1 till probably next month or april. T oeach its own but there is a difference between a FLAGSHIP company phone and just a Released updated phone.

please excuse my being ignorant... besides wimax, will supersonic support WCDMA&GSM I am totally an idiot about WiMax technology...

The bigger issue in my mind would be who in the modding community is going to support it.

The absolute BEST way to play this game is to buy the first phone that comes out on the market using the next best processor.
The N1 currently has the only Snapdragon processor on the market.
It will be 9-12 months before the next 3.7 inch (or larger) Android phone with the next best processor is released.
Nuff said.

I bought the Nexus One, because I like having the lastest coolest stuff available to me, ie Android 2.1. I don't think we'll be sitting around 6 months after Android 3.0 (or whatever release) waiting for Google to push us an update. After owning an iPhone since day one I realized hardware isn't everything (This applies to other devices & hardware as well) I think we'll have the latest features with the N1 for a very long time, if we don't it'll be hacked in under 30 days, ie Desire ROM.
I will say this about the N1, when I first received it I thought I made a mistake coming from the iPhone but after a month with the phone there is no way I could go back to that glorified VTech toy. Every issue or complaint I had about the phone has been addressed by either Google, Cyanogen or a third party developer. (Other than my palms continually touching the screen but a case fixed that)
But seriously, you're looking at phones like they are software. Always something new around the corner. Outside of IT stuff, my other passion is cars. When considering a phone, look at it like you would a car. There is always going to be something out there faster, nicer and more fuel efficient but that doesn't mean your current car isn't fast, fun to drive or even a "clunker" And don't take me the wrong way I'm not talking down or preaching I had a hard time getting over the idea of not having the "best phone" for at least the next year coming from the iPhone that had zero competition (IMO) for two years. I waited for the Nexus One because it can out do pretty much anything the iPhone can do but that doesn't make my old iPhone any less of a great phone (despite what I'm sure others in this forum have to say about it). But also like a car, do your research and be very sure of your decision because you're going to be stuck with it for a very long time (Owning a phone for 2 years is like owning a car for 5 or 6 years)

Depends on your situation. Supersonic means you have to be with Sprint, N1 means T-Mobile or ATT(w/o 3g). If you have prefer one over the other, choose your phone accordingly. Otherwise, getting N1 now isn't a bad idea if you want to be on the cutting edge.
Now, the downside of being on the cutting edge is that things don't always work smoothly. N1 even with the latest (beta?) radio rom still give me lots of dropped calls, touchscreen randomly borked, etc.. Not that I wasn't prepared for this, but it kinda surprised me to see these problem from Google. Maybe they should have just released it as BETA(tm).
I have a feeling that there are bugs to be weeded out with N1. While Google is 100% behind the handset, remember that this is actually their first handset. So don't expect smooth experience with N1.
As for losing value, I never really thought of that since I save all my old cellphones.

That's a Bummer! I have none of the issues you mention, and it's been super from day one!!

I believe that the Nexus One will have a much bigger hacker community than Supersonic.
If you can still wait until the Supersonic is out, you might as well wait for that time and see *all* your options in the market. Who knows? Maybe, Nexus One (or HTC Desire) will be cheaper by the time Supersonic is out or there's another great phone with nice specs and a huge dev community.
If you really can wait for so long, you might also want to consider waiting for Nexus Two.
If you can't wait for so long, buy the Nexus One now. Beside the hardware; the support from Google, HTC (especially because of the Desire ROM ports), and a huge community make Nexus One a winner.

The G1 seems to get the most development of all the Android devices (judging from this place, always seem to be something going on over there with the G1). Despite it's design, and processor.. people do seem to love the G1, it even still seems to be going strong after its 2008 release too.
I assume the N1 will be the same ~.~ loved, and loved for long.

Agreed. I used to get the newest and best of everything, now I stick to the ones with the best community - problems get fixed and new things get ported. The less widespread, but "newer" stuff usually has very little support.

Agreed. It can't be pointed out enough that this is not only "Google Phone 1", but "Android Dev Phone 3." Every Android 2.1+ app will be proofed and bug tested on a N1.

xdaIf it's an HTC android device...why wouldn't it be a prominent device in the xda community ?

Actually the HTC HD2 has the snapdragon too and technically hit the market before the Nexus One.
Your theory is sound though. Buy a phone with the next step in technology and it will age slower. As everyone has said, phones are probably the fastest moving field of technology so there is always a better model just a couple of months away. Get something like a Nexus One that has good support from it's manufacturer, good support in the community, is still very new and will have good resale value and thats your best bet.

If 4G is important for you, wait for the supersonic. Otherwise, get N1 and enjoy it until the new HTC Olympian. I read this will be the android version of HD2!

how about wait for the HTC Hypersonic, I hear it allows you to travel in time ;-)

I would like to offer an Official status report on CM7 (Android 2.3) and CM support for the Hero GSM.
As many of you know, Lox stepped away as CM Maintainer for your device sometime in January. Since then, we have continued to issue Nightlies, Betas and one ill-gotten stable build (which was subsequently pulled); all without an active maintainer dedicated to the Hero GSM.
The team has come to the conclusion, that this is just not a sustainable and viable endeavor. With no active developer looking out for the GSM variant, items like that nasty memory leak sneak their way in. Additionally, it would seem that those in the Android community that do work on the CM source, and publish their own ROMS, are not contributing their fixes back to the CM source.
Having a broken base serve as a stepping stone for closed fixed versions doesn't work for us, and is against our aims with CM.
This decision is not irreversible, we simply would require commitment from a capable developer to maintain and manage the Hero vendor. Till that point, CM support for Hero GSM is hereby discontinued.

I think its fair Enough and I personally still appreciate there are still Dev's like Elelinux, erasmux and others who are still helping around to keep us happy with their lovely roms and kernels the time has come to move on
My contract is coming to an end in a couple of months and have already put my beloved hero on ebay.
Looking to go with with either the Samsung galaxy S2 or HTC Sensation as they have 1 GB Ram compared to LG's Offerings and the Motorola Atrix has too many expensive Accessories which I have no intresest
What do you guys think ?

I ordered new Samsung GS2 and I think I'm going to miss some of you crazy dev guys. The Hero was very great phone but his time is running out. Too often I feel the lack of power, camera...

At least if you get bored with your Hero, you could always just flash it with one of the many existing ROMs.

I'm in the same boat as most of you. Nearing upgrade renewal period and looking at the Sensation, GS2 maybe the Atrix and whatever else that comes out. My Hero screen stopped responding so I got a Blade for the time being. I'd like to thank all the developers for their ROM's and the community. I will miss the Hero once it's gone.

Just like reiterate what everyone else is saying. Shame that there isn't an active dev working with the CM team for our Hero.
Have a few months before upgrade time. Would love to go for the SGS II or one of the newer HTC phones (Incredible or maybe Desire S if I had to). I like the sound of the Atrix, but need to look at it in the flesh first. Loved my Razr when I had it, but later phones didn't appeal from Motorola.
Hopefully we will see some new stuff from Erasmux soon. Have tried VR13 and had been running Elelinux 7, but always go back to Floyo for speed and reliability.

This isn't an obituary for the Hero, just thought I would pass on my thanks before any more jump ship.

In december of this year my hero will become 2 years old and i think i'll get a new phone then. But i have to say that the hero was my best choice for a mobilephone till now. And i still think its very useable and it just makes fun to see that there are many more people who see this just like me. i'll miss my hero :*(

I've still got 10 months left before an upgrade
Luckily though my GF is going to get a SGS2 on contract and swap me, I'm going to wait till the sensation is released and the networks offer better deals for it.
Thanks to the devs who have been and gone and still remain, each and everyone has made the hero what it is today. It's a shame, but all good things has to come to an end.

The SGS2 looks quality, it got an excellent review too. I found it on a 12 Month contract albeit with £300 for the phone upfront but the contract is only £20 so it's equivalent to the phone itself on Pay as you Go. I'm quite interested in the Sensation too, I hope the bootloader or whatever is unlocked by someone.
Call me a traitor but Windows Phone is compelling as well. The Dell Venue Pro is chunky but I like it.

I still have many months before my contract will expire, but I am thinking to buy a new phone anyway..
The Hero was my first smartphone and thanks to him I am in love with Android now..

Do not give up, there is a hope. After all, there are no serious problem with CM7 on hero, except for that invisible menus bug, which affects lots of other devices, too. There might be some people, who can take LoxDev's place.

VillainRom just tweeted that they have managed to fix some of the mess of cyanmod so there might be something coming from Villain Rom

Despite having had a new phone for a few months now, I just can't bring myself to sell my hero - just like my old Motorola startac (showing my age now) I think it will remain firmly in my possession for a while yet.

Working to a strict budget on upgrading. Help appreciated.

Now that the N1 is 'obsolete' and ICS isn't coming I feel as though it may be time to move on.
This may take a while though as I effectively have no money and the money I get from the N1 is the majority of what I can spend.
Basically the deal is that I can get either £85 quickly from a recycle site or no more than £100-120 selling my N1 and from Ebay I have found that for this with some lucky bidding I could get a nice used LG Optimus 2X or Motorola Atrix.
Not exactly the best N1 replacements but both have Tegra 2 and are good for the money.
This will be a depressing upgrade and I'll miss this forum but its time for my N1 to go.
If anyone in the UK has any hints for getting a cheapish replacement with better hardware please tell me. The limit is £120 really, thats all I can spare.

Are you completely missing the thread on ICS AOSP going on over on the dev forum? They are making huge progress. In less than a week we'll have a strong working build... don't give up on the N1 yet!

Yeah sorry I have seen that thread and yes it's brilliant but I just seriously want to move onto another phone now. I've just suffered too many problems from the N1 and being denied ICS kinda tipped me over the edge.
In all fairness though it could take some time to get a replacement this way so I will be keeping involved with that thread.
But the N1 just isn't for me anymore...

If it were me then and I wanted to upgrade within that price range, the Atrix is a good choice... However, I would rather find a Nexus S though to upgrade to ICS sooner. The devs for that phone are making huge progress and it is now fully functional. I bet you could find a good condition used NS if you're interested, but know in advance that the specs aren't really that different than the N1. Well, good luck anyway...

I am in the same boat the denial of ICS for the n1, kinda set me off, only reason I am looking for a new phone. Luckily for my n1 I can't afford a new one for a while, and texasice and many other brilliant people have been working on a good soon to be fully stable and functioning build. I haven't tried alpha 8 or 9 yet. But was quite happy with them.
Problem is, I have yet to find a phone that I can even say is remotely a good replacement. I wanted the T-Mobile G2 to be it, but it was just way to big. Love the having the keyboard though.
But I know how you feel. I don't think anyone would buy mine, it slid down a roof screen down, and scratched up, a corner of the glass is broke (in an non multi-touch functioning area).
Best of luck to you in finding a home. Hopefully someone here would love to buy it. I would for my girlfriend, as she hates her Samsung Captivate. But I don't have no money too lol.

Maybe a tip -however, above your proposed budget: I'm in the same ship, leaving my (really loved!) N1 because of lack of ICS support from Google.
Here in the Netherlands you can get Nexus S for eur 250, simlock-free; as for me, the best choice at this moment. You can order one at different sites (belsimpel.nl, phoneshop.nl, etc), eur 250 for a Google phone, getting ICS update among the first looks me a good deal/ upgrade of my loved N1.

Why not wait for a new quad core phone? No point in buying other obsolete hardware like an atrix. I personally wouldn't get anything less than a Galaxy Nexus, and even that is dual core.
Just wait for a WXGA quad core phone. Your nexus still has life in it! I just switched to MIUI and that will keep me happy until ICS gets hardware acceleration. You will regret upgrading now in a few months.

Yeah sure if you can get the OP a quad core for £120 like he said he had available. I'm in the same boat myself and the Atrix is the only dual core for that price range. Even got me thinking about it but I hate the MotoBlur crap its infected with and not removable from what I've seen although can be somewhat hidden which makes me think Nexus S maybe my best option.
At least if your gonna give advice read the OP first properly before commenting.

Before you completely give up on your N1, I suggest you give the ICS cm9 ROM a try. It made me fall in love with my n1 all over again lol. The latest update is really fluid and stable. Well that is just my opinion, wouldn't hurt to try.

im with this guy, im runing the latest alpha ICS rom for a couple of days now as a daily driver and im loving it and this is just the alpha...
if thats not enough to keep the good old n1 then go for the nexus s its pretty cheap and is getting official ics... though i personally hate plastic samsung hehe

Yeah, if you're working on a budget, there is no practical reason to upgrade from the Nexus One.
If you can get a slightly better phone, it will not be worth it. Take your current budget and keep it in a safe place for the Nexus 4 next year. Right now you won't be getting your money's worth. And the Nexus One is a great phone that will have a good ICS rom soon.
I could spend the money to upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus, it's not so much a budget problem, but a practicality problem. My phone is great, and will last me another year.

The Nexus One really is the best of what is available within our price range, I just really don't like the styling of the Nexus S and its cheap arse casing and for what I gain it is not enough to tear me away from my trackball colour notifications
So for me I'm gonna buy it a Christmas present of a brand new housing and feel happy knowing that although considered 'old' now she still has the legs to more than stand her own.

I agree with you. My 2 year's old N1 tastes ICS (thanks to blackrose and texasice!!). A new beginning without any cost!! Don't care if google doesn't support, devs are here to do the job and it's a great job. Thanks to all of them. Just have to wait few more days (Christmas present?) to have a beta version but alpha11 is quite good!

Stay with the HD2 or Upgrade with Contract Termination Coming

I finally, though hesitantly, made the jump to ics with tytung's newest nexushd2 rom after being on gb since forever. And I have to say it surpassed my expectations; the phone runs smooth and perfect during most usage and it's simply a pleasure to use because of the look and feel of the new UI (Thank you tytung!) Literally it's like a brand new phone.
With this phone coming out in 2010, I think many of us will have their 2 year contracts ending soon. Where do we go from here? Maybe I'm just naive, but with such a great developer community pushing good hardware, I feel like there's little reason yet to consider getting a new phone. Would I be correct in saying that with the new roms, the HD2 is like a 95% approximation of the ICS (and in months JB ) experience of a newer phone? I'm thinking about just selling my upgrade phone and keeping the journey going with the HD2. The only real knock I have on my phone is that the digitizer/touchscreen isn't very sensitive, making texting sometimes a chore. Other than that, I love it. Do you guys agree, or do you know of people who have moved on from the HD2 and would never go back?

I'm in the same dilemma. Considering upgrading the the HTC One X when a stable version of ICS or JB is released without HTC Sence (Can't stand it). But apart from the obvious hardware upgrades, I'm not sure if it's actually worth forking out £300+ for something which I can have, at no extra cost, on my trusty HD2.

So guys, I really love Android and have been using it for three years now since Galaxy S, after that I got a Galaxy S II and now own a Galaxy Note II... and Android has evolved beyond my imaginations throughout this whole period... I love Android and I can't believe I am saying this but I think I am getting bored of it.. A year ago I would've laughed at that and recommended the thousands of ROMs and launchers available in Android that change up your experience drastically...
I have flashed almost every ROM that is available for every device that I have owned, MIUI, CM, PA, SlimJB, SlimICS, ARHD, Omega, WanamLite, CarbonROM, HyperDroid, Liquid Smooth, AOKP, Hellybean, and so so so much more. In fact 1 year ago, I would've been considered a flashaholic as I was changing my ROM every week I loved doing it and so I did... I never honestly thought it was possible to get bored of Android but two weeks after getting the Note II (4 months ago) I got bored of it...
I have also tried almost every launcher out there, ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro, Apex, Nova, Next, Action, SPB Shell 3D, TSF, Chameleon, TouchWiz, and many more, I have also used a ton of widgets and watched tutorials on YouTube on how to customize many other widgets..
I know many people buy phones as tools and to get things done but I get phones because they're a hobby and exciting, and I like to keep things exciting which I can't make my Android phone to be anymore, not that anything is wrong with it, but because I think 3 years is enough to try out everything there is about it... iOS would get boring in under 3 months tops..
So my main question is, is the HTC One different enough (Sense) to be exciting to buy for me, considering I have only ever owned Samsung smartphones, maybe HTC Android phones are different and may provide an exciting experience? I know there are many people here like me who have been using Android for a long time and may be able to relate to this and this question is directed at them.... only other OSs I can buy is a BB or a WP8, neither of which I have ever owned.

Go too a local shop and play with the One for some time. Consider yourself if that experience is on another level than you have right now with your note ii

I have also tried almost every launcher out there, ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro, Apex, Nova, Next, Action, SPB Shell 3D, TSF, Chameleon, TouchWiz, and many more, I have also used a ton of widgets and watched tutorials on YouTube on how to customize many other widgets..
I know many people buy phones as tools and to get things done but I get phones because they're a hobby and exciting, and I like to keep things exciting which I can't make my Android phone to be anymore, not that anything is wrong with it, but because I think 3 years is enough to try out everything there is about it... iOS would get boring in under 3 months tops..
So my main question is, is the HTC One different enough (Sense) to be exciting to buy for me, considering I have only ever owned Samsung smartphones, maybe HTC Android phones are different and may provide an exciting experience? I know there are many people here like me who have been using Android for a long time and may be able to relate to this and this question is directed at them.... only other OSs I can buy is a BB or a WP8, neither of which I have ever owned.

sense is deffinetly a ui appart from others.
so far i only owned htc devices and sense sure is a beauty but also verry tight.
the only modding i can think of is start skinning it youreself to keep the overall experience intresting or maybe learn to cook.
also in htc devices since the s-on(security) its a little bit more stepps needed to flash something wich set me back on my flashing rate(used to flash every day o.0)
not sure how the blinkfeed is as im still waiting for my pre order to be deliverd but the things like stereo speakers and htc zoe pulled me over to order a htc again(i wanted to leave because the s-on stuff)
all in all flashing is still able to be done with a few steps and if you never experienced sense its deffinetly worth trying it once.
as for youre other devices try buzz launcher, you can interchange homescreens with other users wich is verry easy and lets you have a different home screen every day

Good point, but the thing Is that I thought that the Note II was a radical change with its completely redesigned Nature UX (when I used it in a store) which I hadn't used on my SII but two weeks later and I was bored.

Yeah but isn't using Sense like installing a different ROM? And after some time I am sure I will change the launcher to something I have already used and wouldn't I then be bored once again? And I did think about cooking stuff up myself but I am knee deep into my A Levels and don't have a lot of time to burn..

My guess is that you will get bored of almost anything so assume same for the HTC One.

So you're recommending a different OS?

buy it and dont histate, i have all the iphones which really boring, nothing intersting they all look the same with little to nothing changes, and the windows phone is not as popular or appealing yet, you will like it.

I get bored with Android from time to time as well. I took a month+ break with the Lumia 920 and a 2 week break with the BB Z10.
In both cases I loved the change and something new but I still got bored and came back because at least with Android you have Roms/Tweaks/etc. to help with boredom, once you play with all the differences in WP8/BB10 and the newness wears off you end up even more bored than you were.
That said, if you use your phone for more "phone" and less "ROM Flashing", I highly recommend you give WP8/BB10 a try. They are both amazing and fluid. (At least go in to a store and check them out)

I actually find the WP8 platform very appealing not as good as android in terms of features but it looks fantastic in terms of interface.

Since you can't make your own decisions, I flipped a coin and it says it's time you move on to other platform.

And I used to use my phone for ROM Flashing but now I just want to use my phone as is...

You have obviously moved beyond phones as the experience is pretty well the same whatever you get - all confined to a thing you hold in your hand powered by a battery and running similar software with similar features.
Time to get your kicks elsewhere. Have you tried sky diving? I am not a sky diver myself but I am told there is never a dull moment.

Hahaha now why didn't I think of that? The responses have been very helpful so this was definitely the right thing to do... others who were once bored of android especially provide very good insight

Although I definitely still enjoy phones otherwise I wouldn't waste so much time on forums looking for the right One.. XD

No, you will get bored with every OS if you are bored with Android, because nothing is as customizable as Android. Try iOS for a week and you'll fall asleep (not to say iOS isn't good, but for someone like you, you'd never last).

Yep. Coming from an iphone this is absolutely true. Stick to Android mate unless you got the money to experiment with other phones. You will end up going back to the good old droid.

and I can definitely see how you're right.. an OS couldn't be as customizable as Android and I would probably get bored of other OSs so much faster...

I got the same feeling with Android, since hd2 I'm with HTC and finally after using one x for almost 1 year, I felt bored and gave a thought of getting iPhone for the first time as I was very impressed with its build quality. So, used my friend's iPhone 5 for 1 day and I got the feeling that I've nothing to do with this.
Finally after seeing the One with its refreshed Sense version, I am waiting for it to be available in my country.
I find that iOS is best for iPad for entertainment. But for a phone Android with sense is best for me, as I can't use Android without Sense. Used WP7 on HD2 and I'm not interested in it anymore. These are just my feelings, no offence.

I got tired of flashing roms myself and was seriously considering win phone. But once I've seen it and used it, decided to go with android.
Good thing with droid is that you can make it look like windows phone or iPhone or anything else but not other way around. Start using your phone for a change and stop experimenting with different roms at least for a while. And you will eventually kick out of that mood and start flashing again. Maybe at slower pace.
