Hey, I'm being offered a used defy for a good price and I'm wondering if I should buy this phone now or save some money for my next option, which is Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V (which is supposed to be updated to ICS). I'm asking this because the defy's last official update was 2.2 and, even though I know about the fantastic scene behind this phone and the hundreds of custom roms, I'm wondering if in 6 months or a year this phone will be as useless as my SE X8
Go for it.

Hey If it is cheap (compare to ebay used defy prices) go for it! It's a sweet little phone, and it does survive a lot of abuse. It is starting to show it's age though, but if you update it with a custom ROM from one of the awesome devs here (i'm on jelly bean with paranoid android - cheers to skeevy420 and brajesh.sharma87) it'll be like a new phone!
Main reason I have one is for it's outdoorsman type qualities...and it's small...
It is cheap considering I don't have a lot of money, companies here force you to "upgrade" to more expensive data/minutes plans to get new phones and that the company I'm in has the most expensive prices in the market (can't change companies now).
What do you mean by "it's starting to show its age"? I mean, I know it won't ever be officially updated past 2.2, but, does it get slow or buggy with newer roms? I'm asking because of my experience with my ****ty SE X8, which is awfully slow since 2.2 (last update it got was 2.1) and new roms are all buggy (BIG bugs like sd-ext being screwed up every now and then, and having to restore a NANDROID backup)
Moved to Q&A. Please ask all questions there, thanks.
This was already talked around here, not recently, but I remember seeing a similar thread some half a year ago.
Defy is almost 2 years old, with all the goods and bads. Officially it's on 2.2, nothing extra. CM7.2 works like a charm so you could get it to 2.3.7. CM10 is pretty alright, but I gave up on it after a few days of slowness and more battery usage. Maybe in a few weeks it will reach the official stable status.
Most probably nowdays you'll only find the Defy+, which has 2.3.4/2.3.6 (not sure about this) from Motorola. With this one things might be a little tricky with alternative ROMs (especially CM), but I cannot talk from my own experience.
If you're not into modding and changing every piece of your phone's software, you're good to go with Defy+. If not... I, myself, wouldn't buy it again.
On another side... depending on your pre-pay options and how much you use (minutes, MB, etc), maybe you should do some math and see if it's worth signing a contract.
Here in Romania, for example, buying a phone with a 2 years contract is a bad investment overall. But you don't have to pay those few hundred euros at once.
So think about it from every point of view...

Same **** here in Argentina, I would sign a new contract, the problem is that my dad pays for it and he doesn't want to pay a more expensive plan :/
I'm kind of leaning towards buying it, the only thing that worries me is that the person selling it told me that there's one button whose light is darker than the others. Could that mean the screen is malfunctioning or that the button may eventually stop working?

So I hate my Hero, A, because it is slow, and B, because it is stuck on 2.1 forever. So I have been looking at the Evo and the Epic, and the other related phones, and here is my question, what is the support going to be like? I know that every time a new phone comes out, the manufacturers seem to forget about the old ones, and for no technical reason, the MyTouch 3G is getting Froyo after all. So one of the things I am looking at with my next phone is that it will be supported for the full two years, the Hero only made it 6 months, so I know that seems like a lot, but I honestly don't think it is too much to ask. If you sell a phone with a 2 year contract, you should support it for at least 2 years, as long as technically possible. So without a vanilla Android phone available on Sprint, which of the two phones do you guys think will be supported with updates longer? I have seen that sources close to Google said the Galaxy S phones will be upgraded to 3.0, but they didn't mention the EVO, even though it meets the spec requirements. Would it be waiting until the end of the year for whatever comes then? Or is just that buying me until December of next year instead of August? Thanks.
No phone will ever be supported for 2 years...some countries even have 3 year contracts as standards...The contract is unrelated to the phone you buy...
The manufacturer warranty is 1 year for all of them...past that you can't really expect them to issue updates for it...that is why we have a community...
You have to remember that the manufacturer is not earning money off your contract, only from the sale and if they have their apps in there, those as well...
The one who is forcing you into the contracts are the carriers...no matter how much you may think the US is a free open country..it is not...out of all the countries we have the most locking of phones and other things...
You are not forced to sign a new contract..you can always pay the full price of the phone up front..the contract just gives you a discount...
Ok, while I will admit all that you said is true, my example is the iPhone. Apple puts out a phone, and continues issuing updates for it, even you you are probably out of your 3G contract now, you can still upgrade to OS 4.0, you won't get all of the features, and it is debatable whether you should have those features, but at least you get part of the update. I don't understand why that can't happen on Android. Even the MyTouch 3G will have had support for over a year. The Hero on the other hand, got its first and only upgrade after about 6 months. Why can't we have some arrangement like that with a non-Google phone? I mean, just give me a full year of updates and I will be happy, if those updates are reasonably prompt, as with the EVO and Froyo. Will that continue with the EVO, or the Galaxy S when we move to Gingerbread?

Well iPhone is different..Apple actually gets paid a portion of your contract...not to mention all app revenue goes to them as well...
But in case of the Hero..it kinda came at a bad time...it was the point where the device specs skyrocketed and Android was moving fast in development..not to mention the Hero was already an out dated phone before it even came out..US was just slow at getting devices on the shelves...recently it seemed to have picked up..before it used to be 6 month - a year before it got in US shelves but was already all over the world...nowadays we get them 1-3 month or so...
Once 3.0 hits Android also slow down a bit in their release cycle...
Most likely you will get 1 year support around these days..and afterwards it will be community support for life ...
Maybe I am slightly bitter, especially that the poor Hero support came after my first HTC phone, the Touch Pro, broke on 4 separate occasions, the first two were within 30 days, so Sprint replaced it, but the 3rd time it took 3 weeks to send to HTC and get it back, after a maze of tech support calls. Then I upgrade to the Hero, and don't get supported.
But what you are saying all makes sense, so I hope either way we get more updates, even if they have to be delivered by the Dev community.

So does mine, thanks to Darchstar and all of his fellow developers. And I can't thank them enough for that, because if it weren't for them, I would have thrown this phone out of my car at high speed off a cliff long ago. But it shouldn't be up to developers to support a year old phone. Especially when it is obviously capable of running newer firmware. And because they don't officially support it, these 2.2 ROMs will never be as good as ones with the official HTC base.

Correct, I just think it is the right thing to do when you sell a phone. Support it for two years. Sprint pays HTC for the phone, and we pay Sprint for the phone and service, so it just makes sense that they Sprint should make sure their customers are supported for at least the two year contract whenever technically possible.
One year of support might be feasable. Htc doesn't want to waste resources supporting old hardware, sprint doesn't want you to reach end of contract. This is why they give upgrade pricing after one year in exchange for 2yr contract agreement. Android platform + this communit have given me the ability to keep a phone for 2yrs with minimal discomfort.

Wait a second... Why the heck would you EVER have to send the phone in to HTC? If it's under warranty, Sprint repair stores handle it for you. If there's no repair stores near you, care cross-ships you out a new (or refurb) phone. You shouldn't have to be without a phone for more than a day, max.

Because it was about 6 months after we bought it, and it we don't buy the warranties. So we called Sprint, and they told us that the only thing they would do is sell us a new phone for full retail, and specifically asked about a loaner or something, and they said that was only for people with warranties. They said the only thing we could do is send it to HTC, so that is what we had to do.
As a rebuttal, you can put 2.2 on a hero, and have everything work. I'm doing that now to get used to not having sense. Sure it doesn't top the charts and 3d games suck on it, but there are plenty 2d games on the market that work fine, you can watch movies that look and sound fine on it if you take the time to convert them properly. Plus, I haven't had any issues with lag, especially with the keyboard. The stock android one us much better than htc's ime.apk in that aspect. And it probably has to do with the haptic feedback. I typed this on my phone and it doesn't feel like a chore.

Thanks again gTen, and rufflez, I have already said how much I love the devs here and on other forums, and all the work they put into the platform, but the operating system is always the best when based on official kernels and and drivers. And it shouldn't be up to the community to support the devices after such a short time. They should improve on work done by the manufacturer, but they shouldn't be solely responsible for the device's advancements.
Hi Have a look at the CM7 forum
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/forum-0/announcement-16-hero-gsm-cm-7/
I would like to offer an Official status report on CM7 (Android 2.3) and CM support for the Hero GSM.
As many of you know, Lox stepped away as CM Maintainer for your device sometime in January. Since then, we have continued to issue Nightlies, Betas and one ill-gotten stable build (which was subsequently pulled); all without an active maintainer dedicated to the Hero GSM.
The team has come to the conclusion, that this is just not a sustainable and viable endeavor. With no active developer looking out for the GSM variant, items like that nasty memory leak sneak their way in. Additionally, it would seem that those in the Android community that do work on the CM source, and publish their own ROMS, are not contributing their fixes back to the CM source.
Having a broken base serve as a stepping stone for closed fixed versions doesn't work for us, and is against our aims with CM.
This decision is not irreversible, we simply would require commitment from a capable developer to maintain and manage the Hero vendor. Till that point, CM support for Hero GSM is hereby discontinued.

I think its fair Enough and I personally still appreciate there are still Dev's like Elelinux, erasmux and others who are still helping around to keep us happy with their lovely roms and kernels the time has come to move on
My contract is coming to an end in a couple of months and have already put my beloved hero on ebay.
Looking to go with with either the Samsung galaxy S2 or HTC Sensation as they have 1 GB Ram compared to LG's Offerings and the Motorola Atrix has too many expensive Accessories which I have no intresest
What do you guys think ?
Same with me
Really thanks to all developers especially erasmux, ninpo, pulser,Villain Team....
Because of you i still have my old good Hero. Cheers
I ordered new Samsung GS2 and I think I'm going to miss some of you crazy dev guys. The Hero was very great phone but his time is running out. Too often I feel the lack of power, camera...
At least if you get bored with your Hero, you could always just flash it with one of the many existing ROMs.
I'm in the same boat as most of you. Nearing upgrade renewal period and looking at the Sensation, GS2 maybe the Atrix and whatever else that comes out. My Hero screen stopped responding so I got a Blade for the time being. I'd like to thank all the developers for their ROM's and the community. I will miss the Hero once it's gone.
Just like reiterate what everyone else is saying. Shame that there isn't an active dev working with the CM team for our Hero.
Have a few months before upgrade time. Would love to go for the SGS II or one of the newer HTC phones (Incredible or maybe Desire S if I had to). I like the sound of the Atrix, but need to look at it in the flesh first. Loved my Razr when I had it, but later phones didn't appeal from Motorola.
Hopefully we will see some new stuff from Erasmux soon. Have tried VR13 and had been running Elelinux 7, but always go back to Floyo for speed and reliability.
Thanks to all the devs past and present.
This isn't an obituary for the Hero, just thought I would pass on my thanks before any more jump ship.
In december of this year my hero will become 2 years old and i think i'll get a new phone then. But i have to say that the hero was my best choice for a mobilephone till now. And i still think its very useable and it just makes fun to see that there are many more people who see this just like me. i'll miss my hero :*(
I've still got 10 months left before an upgrade
Luckily though my GF is going to get a SGS2 on contract and swap me, I'm going to wait till the sensation is released and the networks offer better deals for it.
Thanks to the devs who have been and gone and still remain, each and everyone has made the hero what it is today. It's a shame, but all good things has to come to an end.
Too many devs to mention but thank you all!!
The SGS2 looks quality, it got an excellent review too. I found it on a 12 Month contract albeit with £300 for the phone upfront but the contract is only £20 so it's equivalent to the phone itself on Pay as you Go. I'm quite interested in the Sensation too, I hope the bootloader or whatever is unlocked by someone.
Call me a traitor but Windows Phone is compelling as well. The Dell Venue Pro is chunky but I like it.
I still have many months before my contract will expire, but I am thinking to buy a new phone anyway..
The Hero was my first smartphone and thanks to him I am in love with Android now..
Thanks for everything Hero..
Do not give up, there is a hope. After all, there are no serious problem with CM7 on hero, except for that invisible menus bug, which affects lots of other devices, too. There might be some people, who can take LoxDev's place.
VillainRom just tweeted that they have managed to fix some of the mess of cyanmod so there might be something coming from Villain Rom
Despite having had a new phone for a few months now, I just can't bring myself to sell my hero - just like my old Motorola startac (showing my age now) I think it will remain firmly in my possession for a while yet.

Firstly I'll just say hi to everyone (this is my first ever post on XDA)
And yea, almost 2 years after the Nexus One was originally released, I am just about to own one.
I've had a HTC Legend since May 2010 (I was unaware of the Nexus One at that time, because of this buying the Legend has always been a mistake IMO), and I'm tired of it, plus it has lots of software issues, and I've never really thought or attempted to root it.
And so, with my Legend's performance getting worse day by day, I thought I'd get myself a present for Christmas. I considered the Galaxy Nexus, but as I was buying the phone outright, I just couldn't justify paying £510 (+ shipping) for it, and ended up buying a new N1 from Amazon UK for £275 (that price includes shipping).
Since waiting for the phone to be delivered, I have been obsessing over vidoes of it, and forums. I have actually looked at around 100threads on this forum (how sad?!) over the last 48 hours. But, in the course of doing so I have become smitten with this community and the help it offers to those who ask for it.
So I look forward to joining this well established community, and finally owning a Nexus One!
Greetings Dorset,
Enjoy your Nexus One
Yours Sincerely,
Surrey.
P.S Good choice of phone, but look after that power button! (Trackball wake is a must).
Yeah the Power Button issue definitely concerns me, but I'll probably root after a few months, just so I can be sure that the rest of the hardware is okay.
In terms on Custom ROMs, everyone seems to have CM7 on their N1. Is this generally considered to be one of the best ROMs, or is there another reason for its popularity?
Oh, and Hai Surrey
Also make sure to make use of changing the color of trackball notifications. I don't one an N1 anymore [ I went to an HD2 since], but I loved the notification light on the trackball more than any other phones notification LED.
I'll definitely be making use of Trackball notifications for sure.

Basically, this phone is too underpowered for properly running Sense builds, and the ones that were ported have always been with problems, the only relatively stable one being Froyo Sense 1 build ported from Desire by eViL D:.
This leaves it with stock, CM7 and MIUI.
Personally, for this phone I prefer MIUI - IMHO it's far more useful than CM7, containing many nice Sense bits while being small and fast (smooth).

I beg to differ.
HyperSense is perfectly stable, as is Revolution (though he continues to add features and change things up so issues could arise in new builds). I use HyperSense as a daily with absolutely no issues.
As for MIUI, I'd agree that its a great choice also...though i ALWAYS install LauncherPro because i love the features MIUI packs but absolutely derad the iPhone look.
Just my .02.
Welcome to XDA man!
phone is not underpowered main disadvantage is it lacks internal memory when talking about sense roms.Despite of this many people have successfully ported gb sense to n1 without graphical glitches ( thanks to kernel developer fogot name ) other bugs.go ahead and try;u will definately love them

I happened to have N1 and MT4G at the same time (now the N1 is gone), and I can compare their performance first hand.
N1 is seriously underpowered, graphics-wise and storage-speed-wise, to run Sense.
Internal memory disadvantage can be overcome by various SD-EXT utilization techniques.
And Sense doesn't have trackball wake.
dbasabe did great work, but it doesn't turn N1 into a capable Sense device.

Not many people would like to buy a cellphone which was released one year ago since more and more new devices come out in a real fast way.
But believe me, you won't regret for this and hope you can enjoy it, if you have any problems in using your cellphone, you are welcomed to this forum!
I agree on the post above. I just decided to buy a Nexus one despite of all the high-powered android devices nowadays. I guess I just simply love the look and feel of this phone.

Awesome! Glad I'm not the only one buying this phone after so long.
So far I am loving it. And considering the price of new phones, I really don't think you'd be getting much more over the N1 for what you get with new phones.
I will use this phone for at least 1 year.
I have the nexus since it's release to canada by google, no power button issue at all, cyanogen is one of the best rom for a lot of device, on the nexus it manage memory well so it's a good choice.
As far as this phone is concerned, it may not be dual core, but it's fast and the only missing feature compared to newer phone are 4G and near field communication, unless you need those you should be happy with the nexus one despite is age!
I personally doesn't see any justification to upgrade yet
besides the touchscreen failures .. its a great phone despite its age

I'm in exactly the same position as you! (and what's more, I'm also from Dorset ) Except my Nexus One came today! It's beautiful! I got mine for about £109 from ebay and I'm also hoping to root and install CM7, as that's what I had running on my old Motorola Milestone (which died and was the reason I bought this) Good luck with this device!
One of the reasons why CM7 is so popular, is because it is pretty much the only truly custom build based on AOSP out there. There are a lot of AOSP builds that are very basic and don't deviate much from stock, and then there are a much larger amount of builds that are based off the CyanogenMod code base. MIUI is one of those.
But MIUI does make a ton of changes to the CM base, just as CM makes a ton of changes to the AOSP base. It does make MIUI stand out of the pack of CM-derived ROMs out there. While it did start with the CM codebase, they have done an excellent job of distinguishing themselves and giving a completely different user experience than someone running CM.
There are definitely a lot of different builds out there for our beloved N1's, but the two that tend to push the envelope the most and add the most new features are CM and MIUI. Try both out and see how you like them.
And I would recommend rooting much earlier. I had my phone for 3 months before I rooted it, and after I rooted and put CM6 on there (this was well before Gingerbread was released), I kicked myself for not doing it earlier. It runs sooo much better than stock ever did, plus there are a ton of new features.

^completely agree with this guy here. I purchased my N1 (US though, not Canada ) at release. I've had not a single issue with power button or anything for that matter. Out of the "common" N1 issues, the only one I encountered was small dust or dirt particles under the screen. That's kind of my fault because I work outside and I keep my phone in my pocket where stuff does get in my pocket on occasions. I plan on eventually researching how to take the screen off and clean that stuff out.
As for everything else he said, spot on. Phone functions plenty fast enough and internet moves quick enough for my taste (and I use my internet A LOT including teethering to my PC as my main source of internet use). Though I would love to get a Galaxy Nexus, I don't think I can justify to myself (or my wife for that matter! haha) the need to spend $700 on a new phone.

^this guy is right as well. I use to work for U-Haul and I had my N1 for maybe 2 months, didn't know anything about rooting and such as it was my first serious smart phone (I came from an LG Vu) when some younger guy came in with an N1 (only one I've ever seen in person by the way besides mine, to this day) and we started talking about it and he asked me if I had force updated my phone and such. He told me about XDA, I joined up, and here I am today. I force updated with the update.zip that was on here, learned about rooting, and within a week after that I had my phone rooted and never looked back. Did a lot of CM nightly testing and such. I've used CM, MIUI, Sense...you name it...from developers new and old (still miss Evil's work!) and every kernel you can think of.
I'd highly suggest rooting ASAP and taking full advantage of this amazing phone

Sent from my HTC Desire S
I finally, though hesitantly, made the jump to ics with tytung's newest nexushd2 rom after being on gb since forever. And I have to say it surpassed my expectations; the phone runs smooth and perfect during most usage and it's simply a pleasure to use because of the look and feel of the new UI (Thank you tytung!) Literally it's like a brand new phone.
With this phone coming out in 2010, I think many of us will have their 2 year contracts ending soon. Where do we go from here? Maybe I'm just naive, but with such a great developer community pushing good hardware, I feel like there's little reason yet to consider getting a new phone. Would I be correct in saying that with the new roms, the HD2 is like a 95% approximation of the ICS (and in months JB ) experience of a newer phone? I'm thinking about just selling my upgrade phone and keeping the journey going with the HD2. The only real knock I have on my phone is that the digitizer/touchscreen isn't very sensitive, making texting sometimes a chore. Other than that, I love it. Do you guys agree, or do you know of people who have moved on from the HD2 and would never go back?
I'm in the same dilemma. Considering upgrading the the HTC One X when a stable version of ICS or JB is released without HTC Sence (Can't stand it). But apart from the obvious hardware upgrades, I'm not sure if it's actually worth forking out £300+ for something which I can have, at no extra cost, on my trusty HD2.
Hello guys ... I have a enormous doubt! I want a smartphone fast, tough, different. which can get in the water. And that is not too expensive!
**
Researched and the best I found was the Moto Defy +. I want the opinion of you about this phone, remembering that I live in Brazil and here the network is GSM.
What you have to say? Thank you in advance.

You are asking your question in a Defy forum,
How much are you paying and what other phones are available to you at a similar price?
Defy is now a 2-3 year old phone, but can run latest Android JellyBean although not supported by Motorola.
It is a fairly fast device (once bloatware is removed), but newer devices are much faster.
It is very tough and water resistant.
Don't know about "different". What do you mean by "different"?

Thinking the side of years. you're right! But I live in a third world country. Today's phones are expensive here!
"Different" in the sense of something new. For me the phone is looking good. I have no intention of upgrading the android, unless they can prove that it is better to upgrade. My intentions are the basics, put some games some applications, customize it my way and uses it quite in the pool.
So I asked the opinions of people who know better the phone than me. This mobile can offer me what I want?

Brazil being a third world country? what the F are you talking about? what ossie says is true, defy is a great mobile but now there are other better options, like the galaxy ace 2, or the s plus even the s3 mini comes in a acquirable price, besides the "normal" defy mb525 (red lenses) is cheaper and has the same defy+ hardware. About the defy's water resistance... I don't know, never have tried it, but some people says it does resist, others have had bad experiences with water. I would say, compare those other's prices and features, and choose as you will
first of all, the Defy/+ is very durable. I'd say that there is no other phone out there that is waterproof and durable like the Defy. It's true though that it is "old" and the Hardware is not up to date anymore.
There are other phone that are also dust and water-resitant like the Sony Acro S. You might wanna check that one out. It's not as durable as the defy though but its hardware is much better.
I've bough my defy like 2 months ago and I'm glad I didnt buy Galaxy S. The phone is awesome. You can play games, talk while its raining and u've got no umbrella (it happened to me once) without even care ur phone will be a crap after that.
