Xperia Play 4G Now Available - Xperia Play General

I just got an email alert from Sony Ericsson (I forgot that I even signed up for news on their site, this is the first thing they have sent out)
It reads:
The Xperia PLAY 4G has arrived!
Experience the best in mobile gaming
The only PlayStation® Certified 4G smartphone, the Xperia™ PLAY 4G delivers killer thrills with its genuine hands-on gaming controller. Play optimized
Xperia™ PLAY 4G games all the time like Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Battlefield Bad Company™ 2, Dead Space and more!
Preloaded with 7 great games, you can also shop for tons more top titles from major and independent publishers available for download from Android™ Market.
It also comes with the dock in the box.
Personally, I get way better coverage with Verizon in my area.

This is just the AT&T HSPA+ xperia play. Its not "4G" I dont care what AT&T and sprint want to call it. Also, with AT&Ts network I don't imagine the speed will be much if any better for most people. And even so...you'll get charged for data you haven't even used

Edit: just my 2 cents.

[Q] I would like to see a Sprint Android World Phone.

I don't know about every one else out there but, I would like to see Sprint with a Android World Phone. Verizon has two. I sometimes travel outside of the U.S. and I would like to be able to talk on my phone. I hate changing over to the touch pro 2 to do so. This was just my two cents. Does anyone this this will ever happen?
Definitely agree with you that Sprint needs a world phone!
I have been a long time Sprint customer (9 years) and although they have coverage in some countries, so far it has been dismal! I just got back from England and it was frustrating not being able to use my EVO but instead had to use my back up Nokia with a sim card slot.
I was just at Best Buy today inquiring if the Verizon Thunderbolt is a world phone (this is the only phone that is similar to the EVO that I am willing to switch to). Won’t know for a few more days when the demos hit the store. I am seriously considering switching carriers, it’s just hard to find a phone that is similar to my EVO! Also I have been quite frustrated with the lack of 4G in doors! I was just at Corner Bakery this morning and I was streaming the Chelsea / Liverpool game with my evo to my Elocity Android tablet and 4G coverage was just horrible inside. I walk outside and bam, 3 4G bars.
I would look at the Verizon Droid pro or Droid 2 (?, not sure if I have those model numbers correct) but I can’t stand motoblur. I also don’t like the fact that those are not 4G as I tether to my tablet and laptop on a regular basis and I love the 4G speed over 3G for streaming.
I leave for the Philippines in 2 weeks and yet again I will need to use my Nokia. I tried my Evo last time while in the Philippines and it didn’t work their either. I don’t like T-Mobile or AT&T due to the lack of unlimited data (T Mobile has a 5 Gig cap on thier unlimited data before they throttle you) and these would be the most logical choices since they use a sim card.
Other countries I have had a lack of coverage: Brazil, Peru, Hong Kong, India and a few others)
If anyone has any suggestions, I am definitely open to hearing them.
I've also been a long time sprint user 7 years. Look at the HTC inspire 4g from ATT. It's almost just like the EVO. Bad battery. 1250 compared to EVO 1500. It hasn't come out yet. If sprint comes out with a Android world phone just like the EVO or better that would be my new phone.
The EVO you wish you had

[Q] New phone - what should I get?

I work for a company that provides cell service and my 2 years contract is expiring soon. I am eligible for a new device. I have had a Droid X on my personal plan, but plan to sell it once I get the upgraded business device.
Here is what my company supports - which one should I get and why?
AT&T - Apple iPhone 4 32GB Black
AT&T - HTC Inspire 4G
AT&T - HTC Tilt 2
Sprint - HTC EVO 4G
T-Mobile - myTouch 4G Black
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Verizon - Apple iPhone 4 32GB
Verizon - Thunderbolt by HTC
Verizon - LG Vortex
Verizon - LG Ally
Verizon - Motorola Droid 2 Global
Not much of an option, IMO. TIA.
What's important to you? Keyboard? Battery?
As mrkite said, what's important to you? AT&T in this area, NYC Metro, still has poor service and a 2gB data cap so scratch their phones for me. T-Mobile is probably going to be gobbled up by AT&T so they're out.
The iPhone doesn't have a user replaceable battery and it wouldn't last me through the day, that and the Thunderbolt (which has poor battery life) are off the list. I'd also rather have Android over Apple.
The LG phones are pretty old so that leaves the Droid 2 Global. I have a Droid X and really want an LTE phone but don't see one that I like yet. Maybe by September.
My droid x has decent battery life -
what's important: battery life, coverage, 4g, android (gb preferred), software keyboard.
You're not impressed with the bionic or other 4g phones out now or soon?
I'm weary of the bionic, as I'm not particularly happy about the screen (pen-tile), web top shadow os and the distinct possibility of a locked bootloader. So, if possible, I would wait for the next round of phones, or wait for a sgs II, that looks amazing. If not, get a thunderbolt. It has tons of dev's working on it and they do make extended battery's.

First things first, go Verizon.
Battery life: get the iPhone
Speed: HTC Thunderbolt
Plus, as was mentioned, the TB has a ton of dev work on it so you could probably do a bit more.

DO NOT GET AN IPHONE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
That being said, go for either the thunderbolt or the evo. Both are excellent phones
Wow - many thanks for your responses!

If you are already an Android user, I'd stick with that. Final response for me: Thunderbolt

+1 for the Evo. Rom of choice, MIUI! No 4geez, but it is buttery smooth and battery life is superb. No data cap is pretty darn swell too, and Sprint seems to be pretty stinkin root friendly.
(Or hope your company allows the Evo 3D soon...)
Sprint - HTC EVO 4G I know HTC battery sucks but this was what I was going to get before we made the switch to Verizon
If you can, I would wait as long as possible, and see if any better choices come out before you need to upgrade. The Thunderbolt it a nice-ish phone, but it doesn't have dual-core...
Maybe if Motorola comes out with a new, dual-core, 4G phone, with an unlocked bootloader...and maybe a supermodel will knock on my door tonight...

Its the same Play that any GSM world user would get(or you can buy un carrier locked but it won't do 4G). It includes the multimedia dock that is already available, but it won't have any new features.
That said I am a little jealous because this version will likely have some of the SE features cut from the Verizon one, and will most likely get the Android 4.0 Upgrade before Verizon as well.

1) What SE features? and what do you mean by cut?
2) we're on 2.3.2....our phone is capable of going to android 4.0??
P.S.
UGH I don't understand why Verizon is so laggy with the updates....how hard could it be?
Any idea when we're getting the 2.3.3. update?

All of SE's UI features are removed (although some prefer it that way) there are some new features that the upgraded versions have that we likely won't get.
There has been no word of when we are getting the upgrade to 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 however SE publicly announced all 2011 Xperia Phones will get Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) however considering everyone else is on .3 or.4 and we are still on .2 I'm not holding my breath for 4.0 to come quickly.

Xperia Play 4G Review (My Thoughts)

Hi guys,
Just wanted to share my thoughts on the Xperia Play 4G handset to anyone who might be checking these forums - Sony Ericsson was kind enough to provide the handset for review, and I have to say I was quite impressed for everything that was offered at the 50$ price point. You can check out my full review below for all the info, by the way - I'm posting some accessory reviews in the accessory thread!
great video mate thanks for sharing
*Sigh* ...so does this "4G" version(R800at) actually have any special connectivity options, or operate on any bands that the R800a doesn't?
...or is it just another case like always; where "4G" is little more than a marketing term to sell **** to the same kind of person who watches G4TV/believes Apple and innovation fit in the same sentence?
BTW, great video m8

It's just marketing unfortunately, it runs off AT&T's HSPA+ network, not LTE. Therefore speeds are more of an enhanced 3G, so while they may be usable, they are slow and cannot be compared to 'true' 4G.
Thanks for the kind words!
Calling HSPA+ "4G" is a lot like calling smart phones "super phones"
I just got the XP as an upgrade to the Atrix and as sad as that is I like the play better. My Atrix was running CM7 with a 1.3 OC obviously dual core and it was hitting a quadrant of 5kish with a linpack of 80 multi core and single of35-40. My new play is hitting 2500ish on the stock rom with a 1.9 OC stable with a linpack of 60 single core and 50 with multi thread. So it actually runs faster in day to day activites especially since almost no apps are multi threaded even Gingnerbread is no where near optimized for dual core. I could honestly give a flying poo what the specs were on a phone as long as its smooth and fast, the play is both. ICS will help dual/quad core phones to an extent but until we see what it exactly does dual core phones are bench queens. Just my .02

hahah yeah - more than at&t lying, I hate hearing people say "my phone has 4G, yours is 3G" - when they barely know the meaning or their theoretical speeds, ugh. Some think iPhone 4 has 4G.

Canada / USA Z1 Owners.......Sign In Here

.............
Pretty good here! I get a lot of looks over the Z1 considering how rare Sony is here, especially the Z1 as it's not even available here yet. (USA)
Fine.
USA here , bought my C6906 from a guy who got it from Telus in Canada. The Sony Store in Dallas only had C6902s, so no T-Mobile LTE Bands unless I had gotten another model. So far, pretty satisfied with it, just waiting for my Case and skinomi techskin to come in the mail, as well as a way to root .290 for us LBs.
Loving the phone amazing battery life even on heavy use

Using mine on ATT and loving it. No issues for me.

Bought mine from Handtec UK on launch day C6903, AT&T LTE works in some areas, didn't test it on T-Mobile network but it should be fully compatible with its LTE.
I'm thinking about switching from AT&T to T-Mobile for 2 reasons:
1) There is a higher chance xperia international models supports T-Mobile LTE, well since xperia ZL
2) No Annual Contract and cheaper than AT&T
Anybody had any experience with T-Mobile Service?
Unlocked c6906 here. On rogers network. Blazing fast LTE speeds. Hit 127 down in a crowded shopping mall in Toronto. Absolutely amazing phone. It might not have the highest benchmarks but it's a really well rounded phone that was built with elegant materials. I'm an apple product user. Came from an iPhone 4 when it was first released. And I am impressed with with the quality of the Z1

I'm with T-Mobile. I work all over the US, and as long as your near a decent size town the coverage is generally pretty good. If you get out in the middle of nowhere, you'll be either piggy-backing off of AT&T or possibly have no coverage.
Otherwise, I'm loving my Z1.
T-Mobile here with the 03. Awesome device!

C6903 with Fido in Canada. 100% sold on Sony. Off topic, but I just picked up the QX10 camera from the Sony store. This thing is so fun. Highly recommended.

Cool, then I'll get the $30 prepaid plan from T-Mobile (100 min, Unlimited txt and Data), will try it out and see how is the service in my area:good:
I've got a white unlocked C6906 that I got week one of the Canada release.
I love it in every way, shape and form
Got it the day it was released on bell. I like the phone but a few things bug me.
1. My ZL was the perfect size wish Z1 was that size
2. Camera underwhelmed me a lot it's not horrible but definitely not the step up Sony made it to be. Good in daylight pretty noisy in low light.
But in the end I just bought a Pentax K3 so I could care less about the camera.
3. I've had a few glitches with the stock mms app.
4. Hated the ASF film scratched to easily and Sony didn't etch the logo on the glass.
5. Wished it had an I.R blaster the ZL did
6. Screen isn't class leading this truliminous that Sony speaks of is nothing to write home about, My xperia Z had a better screen. Viewing angles on both aren't great either though.
What I like
1. Fast I mean zero lag, best performing phone I've had.
2. Battery life alone almost makes up for all it shortcomings. I get average 4-5 hours screen on time, simply amazing.
3. Sexy, its a beautiful phone to look at.
4. Sony has been pretty active with the updates
5. Sony Walkman app is great especially if you have music unlimited subscription
6. Head on the screen is very sharp and clear
7. Looks good with my smartwatch 2
8. Shutter button, had it on my ZL then missed it on my Z
9. Waterproof
................
Bought the C6903 when it was released. I was able to get LTE speed on certain cities in LA with ATT. Just switched to the factory unlocked C6906. Now i have LTE everywhere i go

I just switched from att to tmobile today with my c6903 and im loving it. I was getting lte on att in most areas in miami but sometimes h+ and its the same situation for tmobile....BUT i get fullly unlimited zero throttling data and i use hotspotting in my house 30mbps! my att lte barely got to 15 most times! tmobile is way better and u can use tmobile data and text in over 70 countries free!!! freeee!!!! best company ever. but the tmobile lte is more intermittent then at&t. at least in miami.
