Extended battery - Hero CDMA General

Hey,
I bought an extended battery off ebay. It was around $15 shipped. It gets pretty hot and I'm wondering if there is a risk of damage to the phone if the battery gets too hot.

Yes, but how hot are we talking?
Any time your phone is overheating A. It affects your phone's overall performance and B. You risk permanent damage to your phone. If you've ever overheated a desktop or laptop computer its the same thing on a smaller scale.
Are you rooted? Overclocked? What version of Android are you on?

Rooted, cyanogenmod7, 2.3.not oc
How enough to feel through my jeans.

Go into Settings>Cyanogenmod Settings>Performance and check the CPU settings. If they are set any higher than a min of 352 and a max of 710 then that might be contributing to it. If you lower it to 691 max or lower than that even, it should help some. The battery shouldn't be overheating to bad unless something is making the phone work hard. But then I've never tried a battery that size so I can't say for sure...
Whenever it gets decently hot like that either pull the battery and let it sit for a while, or at the very least reboot your phone to clear the memory and give it a little break.

its not oc. Its actually underclocked

Your phone will reboot, it burns through your battery life quicker and overall can be hard on the hardware for your phone over an extended period of time....same as a computer

Cool that's what I thought...I recently installed the GB them and I thought that had something to do with it but them remembered that I had boosted the clock sod....hasn't booted on me since I dropped it back down a lil.

I find that often the highest overclock kernel's usually don't work for most people. Pick one a few notches down and you will most likely enjoy the benefits of overclocking without any issues.
With ultra low voltage kernels, it is possible to overclock and still use less battery since the lower voltage requires a lower current.

Old battery.

As batteries get older do they tend to run hotter? Or just make the phone hotter in general? I remember the phone running pretty cool in the beginning now it gets quite toasty from time to time.

Do you use it more? Changed any CPU setting? I am also inclined to think that they would run hotter as they get older

yes i think they run hotter and they hold less of a charge so you will see a decrease in battery life

Well thats not good whether your battery is brand new or a couple years old. Are you OC'd? If so, do you run temperature profiles? How long / hard do you use the phone before it gets that hot?
Any li-ion battery will eventually be useless over time. My phone has always run very hot when using gps(rooted with oc's and all that jazz or unrooted).

yeah im oc to 1305 an it really only happens when im playing a game and charging at the same time....but battery temp always stays in the green and batt health is good ive had it tested before

well thats to be expected. remember the phones default clock speed is only 800mhz, so with that big overclock+gaming+charging you shouldn't be surprised to get a hot battery.
Never seen a g2 get hot to the touch myself. The battery warms when discharging heavily, but not hot. What's the point of overclocking past 1024mhz ?

ive been oc at low levels and extremely high levels and i found a spot where it seems i get the best all around performance....each phone will vary but you should try oc to higher levels if u havnt yet...careful around 1497 though, my phone just gets weird

Mine would get warm to the touch using it heavily on the charger and overclocking to 1.2ghz or so.
Not sure why you'd overclock past 1ghz. I've never seen my phone bog down with anything at 1ghz. Some like to do it though. The usual level for overclockers is probably 1.2ghz. I personally keep it at 806mhz...

so u dont see much of a increase in speed when oc above 1ghz...i think i might mess around with the numbers again just to make sure....thanks for the tip

Well I'm sure if u run benchmarks you'll of course see better performance at higher clock speeds. I'm just expressing that in my uses, I've never seen any reason to clock past 1ghz, not to mention the increased battery drain of overclocking in most cases

Somwletimes custom roms includes a different kernel that are already overclocked. Some people tend to missed this.

It will definitely shorten the life of the battery. As for the phone itself I can't really say. I used to use my vibrant @ 1200mhz daily while running bionix 1.3.1. I never really noticed any wear and tear from the overclocking. If your phone runs warm while overclocking you should really consider running the stock voltages. Your phone may overheat and fry your cpu gpu with the high temperatures. So be careful when overclocking.
Meh i dont completely agree...
It will only shorter the life of your battery because the processor will draw about 20% more power which is very small compared to the like 20x more power the lcd takes up.. i dont think youll feel the difference.
The heating up i disagree with too since ive seen processors reach boiling point of water and continue to work.. thats not to say they all will but ive oced my phone to 1.6ghz to benchmark for several minutes and it never got above 41*... the battery heats up alot more when its charging than the processor does most of the time so i wouldnt worry tooo much about that.
Now as to whether the phones llife will lower... yes probably.. youre putting more stress on the processor than if you dont oc.. honestly tho, processors dont die very often so i oc all day as my daily runner, usually to 1.4ghz if my kernel will do it..
Up to you and honestly all of this is my opinion based on my available info etc.. hope this helps

I have mine Oc to 1.5 and no issues. 1.5 is the Max I would go.

Everything I have read says 1200 is completely safe. I run mine at 1460 with no issues. It obviously draws more battery but using Voltage control app you can adjust the level of battery.

You would be fine with 1.2Ghz, but look into a kernel that supports some slick CPU scalers (smartass is a good, easy choice). You can set that (1.2Ghz) as a max clock and you can let the scaler determine how it gets there (if need be). Running only 2 clocks (OC and deep sleep) seems a bit overkill to me, but to each their own.
Like everyone else said, you ought to be perfectly fine with that value.
The highest I would go is 1500 though

Lol, running an overclock on a phone seems a bit overkill to me...
Think about this.. How much copper is strapped up to your phones cpu?
Would you overclock your desktop on a stock cooler?
I feel sorry for the saps who buy phones second hand(especially after reading this thread). (hey wait a minute, that's me too.. Lol)
I never overclock anything.
Ever.

Cpu temp concern

I'm using franco 165 and I undervolted 100 on all steps my cpu hit 50 Celsius or 120f I dropped my phone twice now in the official bumper I have a better case I'm gonna switch to but two part question.
#1 does dropping device damage the cpu mounting causing overheating or stuttering
#2 is the cpu at 120 running hot? It's at 94-96 idle

Another one of these threads.... Holy cow.
Yes the N4 irradiates a good amount of heat and does get quite hot at times. Its totally normal.
If your search you'll find many many many posts of this topic. Some people believe its overheating. I my self think the high temps in this device are normal and haven't caused me any issues even overclocked.

50°C for CPU temp is well within the normal. In fact that is pretty cool.
Mine is currently at 43° and only used for less than 1 minute.
Points for concern are CPU > 80°C
And battery > 50°C
Anything below is nothing to even get concerned with.
I will state the info I have given to others previously.
With defaults the phone will start to throttle at CPU 60°C or battery 48°C, this is what is classed as running warm.
From then you have up until CPU 100°C or battery 60°C before the phone will power off because it's running critically hot and needs to cool to prevent damage.

Nexus 4 is to hot.

Hello,
I have Mahdi ROM, and tried this kernels: Hells Core, Matr1x and Ak. But my phone go very hot and the battery drain tot fast.
Phone is rooted, I run Greenify, Gmail and WhatsApp. Sync is off.
Is there any good and friendly battery kernel?
Without go to hot?
I have nog this settings in Hells Core.
Min: 384000
Max: 1026000 with ondemand
GPU: 128
Undervolted begin with: 65000

too hot says nothing. whats the cpu temp?
anyways, if your phone gets too hot, it will hit the safety shutdown and turn itself off. anything below that temp, is not too hot. you have a quad core phone, its normal for it to get hot. with using cpu or gpu intensive apps, it can get extremely hot, and thats normal. tyhe n4 also has a glass back, and for a reason, to cool off the phone. the heat gets transfered through the glass to the surrounding air. because heat gets pushed through the back glass, it will feel hotter. again, if your phone was "too hot", it would shut itself down.
anyways, cpu shutdown temp is 100C, and you arent anywhere near it.
your battery drain is unrelated. battery life all depends on how you personally use your phone, how you set it up, what apps you use, and very much the quality of your phone/data connection.
Don't worry about the temperatures. I don't know about you but during the summer my phone heats up a LOT, and that too very often, but it doesn't harm the phone
has simms22 said, the way the phone is built you get the feeling that the phone is really hot in this time of year
the battery drain depends of the use but if it is really draining fast while idle (like 6-10% for hour IDLE) and the battery charging is inconsistent then you may have a problem with the battery

It might not be normal, and the battery consumption may be related. I had a similar issue a while back after updating my carbon to a latest nightly, I started getting very poor battery life and the phone used to get too hot (just hotter than normal), when I checked the battery consumption, it was Google Play Services and its wakelocks.
@OP, check what's eating up all your battery..
I find that Franco kernel offers a perfect mix of performance/battery.
Apart from that I'll repeat what others said. Due to the design the nexus 4 often feels hotter than it actually is. But I can assure you that nothing will happen. If it really reaches a temperature high enough to harm your hardware the device will shutdown automatically. But it's likely you'll only reach such temperatures while running benchmarks at full power and over clocked.
