Nexus 4 is to hot. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have Mahdi ROM, and tried this kernels: Hells Core, Matr1x and Ak. But my phone go very hot and the battery drain tot fast.
Phone is rooted, I run Greenify, Gmail and WhatsApp. Sync is off.
Is there any good and friendly battery kernel?
Without go to hot?
I have nog this settings in Hells Core.
Min: 384000

too hot says nothing. whats the cpu temp?
anyways, if your phone gets too hot, it will hit the safety shutdown and turn itself off. anything below that temp, is not too hot. you have a quad core phone, its normal for it to get hot. with using cpu or gpu intensive apps, it can get extremely hot, and thats normal. tyhe n4 also has a glass back, and for a reason, to cool off the phone. the heat gets transfered through the glass to the surrounding air. because heat gets pushed through the back glass, it will feel hotter. again, if your phone was "too hot", it would shut itself down.
anyways, cpu shutdown temp is 100C, and you arent anywhere near it.
your battery drain is unrelated. battery life all depends on how you personally use your phone, how you set it up, what apps you use, and very much the quality of your phone/data connection.

Don't worry about the temperatures. I don't know about you but during the summer my phone heats up a LOT, and that too very often, but it doesn't harm the phone

has simms22 said, the way the phone is built you get the feeling that the phone is really hot in this time of year
the battery drain depends of the use but if it is really draining fast while idle (like 6-10% for hour IDLE) and the battery charging is inconsistent then you may have a problem with the battery

It might not be normal, and the battery consumption may be related. I had a similar issue a while back after updating my carbon to a latest nightly, I started getting very poor battery life and the phone used to get too hot (just hotter than normal), when I checked the battery consumption, it was Google Play Services and its wakelocks.
@OP, check what's eating up all your battery..

I find that Franco kernel offers a perfect mix of performance/battery.
Apart from that I'll repeat what others said. Due to the design the nexus 4 often feels hotter than it actually is. But I can assure you that nothing will happen. If it really reaches a temperature high enough to harm your hardware the device will shutdown automatically. But it's likely you'll only reach such temperatures while running benchmarks at full power and over clocked.

Hot hot hot!!! G2 gets to 40C when charging?

Anyone else notice their G2 runs super hot in general? My friend with a Desire Z is able to daily use 1.4GHz...I have to set mine to on demand between 245 and 998 for it not to hit 38C+.
On top of that, my G2 gets about 40C when I'm charging which is certainly quite hot! Running Virtuous 0.7.2 w/pershoot, but it does this on Cyanogen and evil kernel as well.
Does anyone know of any disassembly shots/videos? I'm thinking I might take everything apart and re-thermal paste everything...
Thanks!
verkion
Eh... 1st of all... you're going to put thermal paste on the battery? The temperature reading for the g2 is the temperature of the battery.
2nd: I've never heard of a phone that had a heatsink on its cpu. So I don't think you'd even have a place to put thermal paste.
40c is totally fine btw.

Not on the battery! Although, that's an interesting idea...use the dry thermal pads between the battery and the door. I'm just checking if everything is getting overly hot compared to some of your other devices. Thought it may be the charging circuit having issues or something...or bad battery.
40C is fine though? At what temp do most of you have set for CPU throttling in SetCPU then? I have mine throttle to lowest when it hits that temp.

40C does sound pretty warm to me even if its while the phone is charging. I am OC'd to 1.4ghz and even when using the phone while charging, I hardly ever go over 37C.
My on-demand is set to 368/1497 and when temp>38C 245/768, although that profile never really comes into play as my temperature rarely gets that hot. Have you checked your running applications to see if there is something eating system resources? Reason I say that is because the only time my phone gets noticeably 'hotter' is after I have been playing Angry Birds for say 20+ minutes.
I wonder if its due to Variable charging currents/rates. I've noticed this is particularly problematic when i charge from say...15% battery. And yeah, Angry Birds for 20+ mins = toasty!

Hmmm, that seems a bit warmer than the norm. The thermal pad idea was a good thought though. But I'd suspect some modding to be done for it to work.

[Q] Nexus 4 heat problem

I am getting bothered by the heat of my nexus 4 especially at the camera side..., when I play psx emulator it really gets hot and it gets hotter when it is charging... even if i am only watching or streaming the internet it gets noticeably hot, so i would like to know if this is ok or not.
what are apps that could monitor the temperature?
what is the normal temperature when gaming and idle?
I would like to know about this things so that if my unit is a lemon, i could return it to lg for the warranty.
thanks in advance.

you have a quad core device, its normal. when you stress the cpu, gaming, streaming, itll heat up. when you charge, your battery will heat up. the back o the phone is glass, so itll feel like it gets hot fast. when the device hits a certain cpu temperature, heat throttling kicks in. this will lower your cpu speed and cool down your device. when it goes over the cpu safety temperature(100C i believe), the cpu will shut down and the phone will power off. there are several apps that show the cpu and battery temperature. remember, battery temperature and cpu temperature are two completely different temperature readings.
System tuner gives you cpu temp. But you should get an app that tells you battery temp as well...

ok thanks..., I'll monitor my device and post the temperature later.
Idle
batt: 35c
cpu: 39c

batt:42.8c
cpu:54c
I'm still downloading a heavy intensive game to test

simms22 is right you can under clock it safely kernel tuner is free on play
Intel CPUs (i5, i7, etc.) can survive going over 100 degree Celsius, but the commonly quoted safe temperature limit for long term operation is 70 degree Celsius. I would assume that the same holds true for other silicon chips, and find it difficult to believe that the shut off temperature for the Nexus 4 is 100 degree Celsius - you will be getting serious burns on your fingers by then.
Wait..., I recently played a 3d game and my temperature is reaching
CPU: 67c
Battery: 50c
Is my phone a lemon or its a normal case scenario?
Hi all,
For "hardcore user" there is a thread with a solution to limit the heating :

That is a little worrying. Are you using a case? Also what is the room temperature where you were using the phone?

sorry for the late reply I thought no ones going to reply with my post, the room temperature is 31c. and I dont use a case

[Q] [email protected] 74C, [email protected] 45C after 4 mins of Stability Test! what to do?

My N4 gets very hot and very fast; after just 4 mins of running stability test 2.7 CPU is at 74C and Battery at 45C...and google's answer was factory reset..... what should i do now? :'(

stop running the stability test. thats what the stability test does. now all you are doing is pushing your phones cpu for no reason, and crying about its temperature. good grief!
But it is normal? I know it should get hot but not this fast.. Basically if I run any heavy game for more than 15mins it will get very hot......
Were you charging via usb/ac/orb at the time?
Nope, the idle temp of the CPU is ~40C and Battery is ~30C

its right in the middle of the normal range. sometimes it can get hotter, faster, depending how much you push the cpu/gpu. and it will coll down fast too. idle temp will depend on the surrounding temperatures. remember, human body temp is 37C, so 40C is just a little warmer than your body.

Nexus 4 overheating issue

I know that overheating in nexus 4 is common problem, but today after installing custom ROM CyanogenMod 10.1 my phone has started overheating more quickly. Is anybody know any solution of it?

overheating i doubt, what was the cpu and battery temperature? just because it feels warm, doesnt mean its overheated. when it actually overheats, first the cpu will lower in cpu speed(safety), then if that doesnt help itll shutdown. is the weather around you warm btw?
+1 @simms22
Also, if it's really getting to warm your phone would run unstable.

Thanks for your replay, I still don't understand why my mobile has started getting warmer more quickly ever since I've installed custom rom. I've hardly played any graphics intensive game on it so far.
I don't know from where to know cpu and battery temperature. Do I need to install any application from playstore? Weather around here is warm. On average 35-40 degree temperature.
My phone CPU reaches 70˚C and battery 50˚C when driving in my car, charing with gps on a this time of the year(hot as hell here as well).
Everything seems to be find, didn't even turn itself yet so I doubt theres anything to worry about.
My gf forgot her phone in the car stand in the sun for a few hours, when she came back it wouldn't turn on until it was cooler so you can be sure your phone can take care of itself.
Maybe your governor was changed when you flashed the ROM, depending on the governor (like performance) your cpu clock speed may be increased more often then with the original governor.
You can check your governor with apps like no-frills cpu or setcpu and check the temperatures with cpu z

its easier to use an app for battery and cpu temp. being 35-40C around you, id expect the phone to be warm most of the time. anyways, after installing a custom rom your device spends a lot of time syncing stuff. so itll be a little warmer than normal. after about a full battery cycle it should stop, and will be a little cooler. also, a reboot after several hours after a rom flash should help a little too.
Ok, thanks for your quick response.

(Q) Can undervolting too much cause more heat?

As the title says, can undervolting too much cause more heat than just a little undervolting? I'm at - 175mv on every frequency and my phone usually gets quite warm even with normal use, music, etc. Maybe about 45°c...thanks! (I don't over clock, or play games)
Sent from my Carbon powered AKFAUX fueled monster NEXUS 4
45C is normal for this device, when its in the 60+ range then it's time for concern. Undervolting is in millivolts not volts so the change in temperature and battery is not very significant.
However back in the Nexus S days some genius dev measured that undervolting too much forced the cpu to redo some calculations, which made it use more power than the uv would save. Whether that's what's happening to you I wouldn't know, but it could be.
In the process the dev also found out that undervolting didn't save any noticeable amount of battery. Of course, whether the same goes for our cpu isn't known for sure, but I would guess the same concept applies.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
One of the main reasons to UV is to prevent overheating/reduce overall temperature increase. So in other words, no. Just don't UV too much (-125 mV MAX)!
Sent by carrier pigeon
your cpu temp is completely normal, a bulls-eye type of normal too. and yes, undervolting too much can cause the phone to work harder, which in turn can cause more heat.
