Your phone will reboot, it burns through your battery life quicker and overall can be hard on the hardware for your phone over an extended period of time....same as a computer

Cool that's what I thought...I recently installed the GB them and I thought that had something to do with it but them remembered that I had boosted the clock sod....hasn't booted on me since I dropped it back down a lil.

I find that often the highest overclock kernel's usually don't work for most people. Pick one a few notches down and you will most likely enjoy the benefits of overclocking without any issues.
With ultra low voltage kernels, it is possible to overclock and still use less battery since the lower voltage requires a lower current.

Hi there,
I actually want to know if it is harmfull to OC your SGS to 1.2GHz. Ofc it's better to run stock but is it of any real harm and how do you OC? I had a quick test with Galaxy Tuner and I must say when I use my phone heavily 1.2GHz is better. So if this is safe and done easily I would like to do this . Thanks in advance!
Well that seems like a small overclock, so if you have setcpu to your minimum with screen off, it should be OK.

Alright and how long can i use my phone when its on 1.2? Also next to that my phone is in a leather case when not being used so cooling will be a bit harder. Some more information from other people plz? I just want a consensus . Thanks for the quick reply.

my SGS motherboard burnt due to OC....
1 day while i was playing dungeon defenders with OC to 1200, with charger ON. suddenly the phone off it by itsself..
sent to service center, they said motherboard burnt!!!!
lucky they replace the board for me which still under warranty.
so high chance i think is the OC that cause overheat n burnt it.

No one can say for sure what would happen when you push a chip beyond its design parameters. Not all chips are made equal. Usually the standard speed rating is what all chips passing QC should be able to operate at. However some chips may be able to operate at higher speeds without ill effects while others may fail catastrophically even with a slight increase in frequency. So its anyones guess...
Frankly I dont see the need to overclock right now. What ROM are you using ? Flashing to a newer / better ROM can give you a bigger improvement than what 200Mhz can give you on a laggy unoptimized ROM, so why risk it ?? .

The fact you where charging, and playing a game probably had more to do with it than your overclocking.

Hmm I'm running docs mod v9.9.5 XD with speedmod kernel and twlweaks enabled. So it pretty fast already however with the oc there is just less loading time. But you are saying that its useless?

it depends. i personally use tegrak overclock and for battery saving, i use overclockwidget. my sgs has been going for 2 days in a row with battery life only at 48% even with moderate usage(making smses, playuing games occasionally, etc.)
Hmm alright, these apps seems legit. What are your settings with these apps? Or should I use setcpu?

If the phone reaches a certain temperature, the phone stops charging, so i dont think playing a game and charging at same time is the culprit.
Granted that the phone would heat up A LOT quicker than usual, but being so hot, the phone wouldnt of been charging even with the charger connected.
there is now way of knowing whether overclocking is dangerous. Personally i think it is, you have to modify the kernel, modify system settings, modify battery voltage.
None of this is recommended, but we do it at our own risk...
Its as dangerous as running a custom ROM or LagFix. some devices are fine, some brick and burn to a crisp.
So choice is yours
Hmm i guess ill be sticking to 1ghz then... thx for the replies!

i do the same for my x10 n the phone running just fine.
in fact, before i sent my i9000 to samsung for warranty claim, i pass the phone to a local shop, the tech told me the OC cause the board overheat, then burnt it....

Actually tegrak oc works fine. ocing at 1.3 will crash first time but not crash anymore after the first time. ocwidget is not really useful for ocing but just to same battery life. when not really using my phone i will set it at 100mhz-400mhz. you can play angry birds on stock rom with little lag.
So you're saying i can oc.... but im running setcpu. I can OC with setcpu right? That brings another question when my screen is off what setting should i use for setcpu? In other words what is the minimum frequency?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
100MHz is fine for the minimum frequency (for me at least) - this may vary between phones, give it a try.
On the subject of over-clocking though, you should take a step back and ask yourself "How much do I really need those few milliseconds less to load up Angry Birds".
I would suggest that Samsung did more testing than anyone on this forum.
All that said though though I take my phone up to 1.2 sometimes for ****s and giggles & to shut up smug iPhone fanboys

No. Don't set set setcpu to anything below 400mhz because when the galaxy slips into idle mode it cn sometimes be difficult to wake up
. I'd imagine such a low clockspeed would encourage such behaviour. I set my minimum at 400mhz and max at 800mhz. Spot on.

Has anyone experienced performance enhancement with Clock Rate of 1500 in XOOM?
Also, are there any side effects on the life of CPU if this clock rate is used permanently?
Cheers.
Yes, I get significant increase at 1.5. I haven't noticed any substantial decreases in battery life, and as long as it isn't getting too hot than you shouldn't have to worry about the CPU dying much sooner than normal.

Thanks, I will try using 1500.
Obviously running the cpu at 50% faster is going to provide and improvement in the overall speed. The heat is negligible with the Xooms big metal back. Battery may be affected but I have never used stock speed.
Hi, I've lowered all the figures by 100mv, but I notice no difference in my battery life. Is it safe to lower the figures more?

Define what you mean by "safe".
Higher core voltages are used at higher clock rates in order to preserve logic margin in the face of more power supply noise and tighter timing. So, undervolting by definition means you are giving up margin.
Whether your SoC happens to have a worst-case timing path which is "fast" or "slow" relative to other devices cannot be deduced by anyone here on XDA or even at Nvidia. About the best you can hope for is some "feel good reports" about what others do with undervolting and completely undisciplined "testing". But even that provides no information about your individual chip.
good luck
Thanks for your reply. By "safe" I mean without damaging my device. And yes, it would be interesting to hear some undervolting stories. I'd quite like to extend my battery life. Cheers!

I've been using my nexus 7 runing a AOKP pub build by mrRobinson and franco's r47 kernel. i've undervolted the entire board by 100mv it is runing pretty solid without any noticible lag or instability. Yet every chip is diferent and can or cannot this margin you'll have to test for your self. Just leave the option 'set on boot' unticked untill your sure that your device is capable of using those kind of voltages. And don't use very large steps. Just like overclocking in fact! Try it - it runs - get a little bit lower. If it crashes you shoukd be able to reboot the nexus and the settings you've changed reseted

For what i've read that's the truth but if the frequencies set for the soc are getting less power shoudn't it draw less power from battery? 100mv its almost 10% of the stock voltages!

For the SoC, whether it's leakage (V^2/R) or dynamic power dissipation (f*C*V^2), yes, you might expect let's say (0.9^2) = 81% battery use at the same operating frequencies.
OTOH, if 75% of the power drain normally is used by the LCD backlight (for instance in a "reading web pages" use case), then reducing the supply voltage will get you only 1/4 of that 20% savings - about a 5% improvement - because the power is being dissipated elsewhere. (Display, DRAM, 3G radio, WiFi radio, etc)
I agree with what you've pointed! In fact i've just taken out the undervolt because Inhad a reboot under heavy multitasking (torrent download, xbmc opened, chrome also downloading a smal file) i'm not certain that it was caused by the uv but it's possible. The Nexus started to lag and then froze completly! From time to tima i've the need of heavy multitask and it wasn't up to the task!

Battery life on this phone is abysmal - on a fresh phone. Didn't restore much from titanium backup.
Would like to drop the CPU down a good 25% or so, can this be done without too much stress? It's an unbranded, rooted i9505 in Australia.
I suspect I'll need to flash something to do so, is that right?

Define "superb" for me.
Apologies for jumping in here. Can you define abysmal too? I would say my battery life is more than double my S2 (that was Cyanogen niggtlies but this is currently djembey's slim). Biggest drain is usually the 3G but I have that off most of the time. It is hard to compare to be fair as we will all use different settings but I have a lot of the bloat removed or disabled, power save on and screen at half brightness. How is yours setup as maybe we can shyc settings a little to compare more closely.

If the reason to underclock is to save more juice, you should understand that the phone doesn't work on 1,9ghz most of the time, on average it's 200-800mhz depending on task, so you would not probably win a lot battery if you underclock let's say to 1.7 unless you're a heavy gamer.

I know this tread is already pretty old, but that answer is only partially true.
On stock configuration the GS4 uses the 'ondemand' cpu gouvernor. That gouvernor ramps up the cpu speed to the max when cpu activity is detected and will then slow down the cpu depending on the task. So everytime you open/close an app the cpu is running at 1.9ghz. (At least that I heard/experienced) using a custom kernel you can choose a different gouvernor which is more battery friendly, or lower the max cpu speed(from 1.9 To for example 1.7ghz). You can also lower the min cpu speed so that when the device is idle, it will consume less power (I think standard is around 350mhz and I put mine on 189). Some kernels even allow to underclock the GPU. Undervolting will also save battery.
In short: using a custom kernel you can really save some battery, increase performance, or get a better balance between the two, but you will have to take the time to find the settings that work best for you. I personally use KT kernel, with an overclocked CPU and GPU, but I also undervolted them both by 75mV, and with some tweaking with settings for when the screen is turned off, my battery lasts longer than stock configuration.
Correct me if I'm wrong on something, I'm not a Cpu expert
And sorry for bad english

Check this out, if you long press the power saving icon in the notification pull down, it will bring the settings for it, Uncheck all but the cpu. It will run no higher than about 1.3 ghz and is plenty fast for all tasks. I use that setting on the s4 and note 3. I never ran into any lag except TouchWhiz home launcher but I use Nova Launcher anyways.
You will see a better battery life as well.
I just can't seem to keep the temperatures below 41-45° while using the device. While I'm not using the phone the temps stay pretty low, roughly between 37 - 39°. The reason I'm posting this question is because the phone gets noticeably hot to the touch and I didn't want to be creating worse problems down the road due to persistent overheating. Is there something I should do to protect from overheating?
Currently I'm running triforce 3.1 rom with comadose package, hot spot mod, speed tweaks and a few altered build. props. Also running the KT kernel with no over clock just the stock kernel MHZ'S. My speeds are really good I get 45mbps download and 15mbps upload just wanna make sure the heating issue isn't bad.
Thanks in advance for the help.

The thing is im not even overclocking my phone yet out of fear for it getting worse. The issue began when I installed KT's kernel. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled the stock mf9 kernel. I then found the triforce rom with KT's kernel and decided to give it another shot. Right now I'm running my CPU at 1890/380 mhz. So lowering the voltages should help the heat issue even though I'm not overclocking yet? Thanks for the quick response bro.
Could be a bad battery, take it to Sprint and see if they will exchange one for you.
I've noticed on the phone that if you use it heavily, then it tends to heat like crazy. Or if you're doing something on there that is using a lot of RAM or juice from the device.
You can try and remove some tweaks, that might be an issue. And check to see which part of th system is using the most battery on your phone.

Thanks for the reply, I have noticed that when I use antutu benchmark or on it a while is when it overheats the most, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a big big deal. I did just remove the tweaks I had set with Android tweaker pro mabye that'll help a bit. The comadose package I just flashed gave my phone a huge boost of speed so I feel like I don't need all those tweaks. Does anyone know if Android tweaker is a good tweaker app or is is there a better one? Thanks again for all the help everyone.
