I just can't seem to keep the temperatures below 41-45° while using the device. While I'm not using the phone the temps stay pretty low, roughly between 37 - 39°. The reason I'm posting this question is because the phone gets noticeably hot to the touch and I didn't want to be creating worse problems down the road due to persistent overheating. Is there something I should do to protect from overheating?
Currently I'm running triforce 3.1 rom with comadose package, hot spot mod, speed tweaks and a few altered build. props. Also running the KT kernel with no over clock just the stock kernel MHZ'S. My speeds are really good I get 45mbps download and 15mbps upload just wanna make sure the heating issue isn't bad.
Thanks in advance for the help.
When. You over clock try yo lower the voltages to keep the tempature low.

The thing is im not even overclocking my phone yet out of fear for it getting worse. The issue began when I installed KT's kernel. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled the stock mf9 kernel. I then found the triforce rom with KT's kernel and decided to give it another shot. Right now I'm running my CPU at 1890/380 mhz. So lowering the voltages should help the heat issue even though I'm not overclocking yet? Thanks for the quick response bro.
Could be a bad battery, take it to Sprint and see if they will exchange one for you.
I've noticed on the phone that if you use it heavily, then it tends to heat like crazy. Or if you're doing something on there that is using a lot of RAM or juice from the device.
You can try and remove some tweaks, that might be an issue. And check to see which part of th system is using the most battery on your phone.

Thanks for the reply, I have noticed that when I use antutu benchmark or on it a while is when it overheats the most, just wanted to make sure it wasn't a big big deal. I did just remove the tweaks I had set with Android tweaker pro mabye that'll help a bit. The comadose package I just flashed gave my phone a huge boost of speed so I feel like I don't need all those tweaks. Does anyone know if Android tweaker is a good tweaker app or is is there a better one? Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Hey guys. Just need a little advice/help here. Im not new to android or rooting but i dont have a question for you guys. Im rooted my MT3G, Nexus and G2. I have need oveclocked. Since im really falling for my G2 after perm root I dont want to screw it up. Do you really see a performace difference with overclocking. And what would be a safe zone to overclock to but remain stable with overheating or risk of damaging any hardware. Thanks guys I did search but couldn't find a clear answer. Thanks again guys
yea bro real performance boost especially when im web browsing or playing games. i watch lots of flash vids. apps feel a lot smoother as well. i use setcpu it it all the way up and set to under clock as well serious batt life
so just set it all the way up? or is there a zone in setcpu to stay with in..thanks for the quick reply man appreciate it?
i guess the main thing im looking to gain is a little more battery life I noticed I run through my battery a lot faster on the sense rom then I did on cyanogen. Any one know how to create a profile to slow down the cpu when the scrreen is off?
Overclocking is generally very safe. Raising voltages is where things start to get dangerous though.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
You can set a screen off profile in setcpu. Under the profiles tab, add condition for screen off and set max and min clock values. I recommend using 100 as priority and set the values for underlocking per your liking. Seems to provide noticeable improvement in battery life.

doubt that, as this profile is not working with the G2.
After reading through the Thread for the Pre Release of FuguMod Ultra in the development section of this forum I thought I would post some info up for people who are wondering why it doesn't work with their phone, and just some general info on overclocking.
- First off, not all phones will be able to run at 1366MHz. Every CPU made has a range of freuqencies it will work at, and it is different for every single one. So some may be able to handle 1366MHz and above, others may max out at 900MHz. If you are getting black screens, freezes, or random behaviour, then your CPU doesn't like the frequency you have it at, try a lower frequency.
- Always keep an eye on the temp of the CPU when testing overclocking, if the CPU gets too hot, and fail safes don't work, there is a chance you could fry your CPU.
- With the FuguMod Ultra kernel, you must also be aware that gpu bus frequencies have been changed, so if your phone is not happy with that it will black screen. (as bus speeds are like cpu speeds, every different device can handle different clock speeds)
- plls values have been changed, and these may cause problems on your phone.
So if you want to have a go at overclocking your phone, back it up, and then give it a go. Select a frequency, and test with something pretty cpu intensive (3d game, multiple quadrant passes) and see if there are any bugs/overheating during a 15min time period. If you notice any problems/too much heat, try a lower frequency, and try again. And if for some reason your phone doesn't like the kernel, you can reflash with your previous kernel or a new ROM as you have already backed up your data.
If you have any other questions about overclocking, feel free to post here and I will try my best to answer them.

The battery temp is a good representation of how hot the processor is getting as it is right next to the battery (only a thin sheet of metal seperating it) If the battery rises in temperature by a few degrees, then you can summize that the cpu is probably getting a few degrees hotter than that. I really wouldn't recommend letting the battery get above 55degrees (celcius) as this means the CPU may be getting up close to 65degrees (celcius) which is a very bad thing.
Good post.
Note that if you want to make some stress-tests, you have to put "PERFORMANCE" governor and set the max freq you want to test.

How have you got your phone set up? i.e. what ROM are you using etc.
I am using stock jpq with app2sd, swap, zipalign, ramhack and stuff. Setcpu is installed with default min/max freakquency, No profiles in use and undervolt a bit.
Ok,
This may be an issue caused by XXJPQ, as it is a new release there may be some sort of conflict. Have you tried asking if anyone else has this issue in this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132697
I haven't played around with JPQ yet so don't know what the bugs are yet.
Also, are you running a stock kernel? Have you confirmed that the phone has been rooted properly as well?
It's definitely a bug in Kernel. I tried three different roms and i wasn't able to check time in state in any of them (I am talking about fugumod ultra prerelease kernel here).
With previous versions of fugumad kernel everything is fine. So definatly a bug in kernel.

Ok cool, I'll report the bug to the developer so that he can have a look into it. Thanks for testing and proving to the kernel.
Little bit of info some might find helpful. After some recent testing, I have found that some people might experience a black screen freeze when phone is in standby for a while with 83MHz min setting and on demand governor. I am not sure of the exact reason for this, whether it is a bug, or that the processor just doesn't like going that low for extended periods of time. If you experience this type of error, just hard reset the phone then open setcpu after phone has loaded and change the "standby" profile minimum to at least the next step up on the slider. Personally I use 223 setting as it provides a smoother lock screen animation, and no significant difference in battery drain.

I am going to be getting an Atrix in the next few days and will install the Aura ROM right off the bat, but im wandering, since it appears to use an OC'ing kernal, what effect will this have on heat and battery life? presumably negative, but how much so? i dont want another phone which heats up like mad, but i do like the look of the ROM. please help out an Android n00b
thanks
Just because it can overclock doesn't mean you have to. I use set cpu and keep mine undervolted and set to 1.1ghz. Idle around 30 celsius and when I game it gets up to 50 degrees.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
the atrix on stock 1.0 ghz gets REALLY hot so yea i would assume it would just get hotter MUCH hotter but you can get a setcpu and just set your processor down when you dont use it much or make profiles to automatically do it
great, so the rom just allows OCing, not forces it? thats good to know, thanks

it will automatically clock itself to 1.3ghz, you'll need a program like SetCPU or PimpMyCPU to set it to not OC itself.
i suggest SetCPU myself, it can be found on the market. i prefer buying it over getting it for free here on XDA, we gotta support our devs right?
Battery life on this phone is abysmal - on a fresh phone. Didn't restore much from titanium backup.
Would like to drop the CPU down a good 25% or so, can this be done without too much stress? It's an unbranded, rooted i9505 in Australia.
I suspect I'll need to flash something to do so, is that right?

Define "superb" for me.
Apologies for jumping in here. Can you define abysmal too? I would say my battery life is more than double my S2 (that was Cyanogen niggtlies but this is currently djembey's slim). Biggest drain is usually the 3G but I have that off most of the time. It is hard to compare to be fair as we will all use different settings but I have a lot of the bloat removed or disabled, power save on and screen at half brightness. How is yours setup as maybe we can shyc settings a little to compare more closely.

If the reason to underclock is to save more juice, you should understand that the phone doesn't work on 1,9ghz most of the time, on average it's 200-800mhz depending on task, so you would not probably win a lot battery if you underclock let's say to 1.7 unless you're a heavy gamer.

I know this tread is already pretty old, but that answer is only partially true.
On stock configuration the GS4 uses the 'ondemand' cpu gouvernor. That gouvernor ramps up the cpu speed to the max when cpu activity is detected and will then slow down the cpu depending on the task. So everytime you open/close an app the cpu is running at 1.9ghz. (At least that I heard/experienced) using a custom kernel you can choose a different gouvernor which is more battery friendly, or lower the max cpu speed(from 1.9 To for example 1.7ghz). You can also lower the min cpu speed so that when the device is idle, it will consume less power (I think standard is around 350mhz and I put mine on 189). Some kernels even allow to underclock the GPU. Undervolting will also save battery.
In short: using a custom kernel you can really save some battery, increase performance, or get a better balance between the two, but you will have to take the time to find the settings that work best for you. I personally use KT kernel, with an overclocked CPU and GPU, but I also undervolted them both by 75mV, and with some tweaking with settings for when the screen is turned off, my battery lasts longer than stock configuration.
Correct me if I'm wrong on something, I'm not a Cpu expert
And sorry for bad english

Check this out, if you long press the power saving icon in the notification pull down, it will bring the settings for it, Uncheck all but the cpu. It will run no higher than about 1.3 ghz and is plenty fast for all tasks. I use that setting on the s4 and note 3. I never ran into any lag except TouchWhiz home launcher but I use Nova Launcher anyways.
You will see a better battery life as well.
Hey guys.
I have a clean Mahdi ROM (the latest from like 1 week ago) and have the feeling that the battery drains slightly faster than in stock. Apart from other things I started trying different kernel tweaks and I discovered the following:
The governor, although showing explanations for a whole 7 different modes, only allows me to either pick "interactive" or "performance".
Since I never really need the CPU settings from interactive mode, I actually want to use conservative.
How can I realise that now?
Please feel free to post your battery life stats, I'm really curious.
Sidenote: I have "transparent weather clock" on my homescreen and it seems to need a lot of battery. Does anyone have a recommendation for a lightweight & goodlooking homescreen widget?
The kernel for that ROM only contains two governors, please do not use performance because it only uses your max frequency, which is bad for temp & battery life.

Ok, thanks for the info. I wondern why it only contains those two though.
I'd never use performance, interactive already provides more power than I need.
I'm just looking for a way to actually use the conservative mode.
Something weird just happened to me: my phone was at about 38% and when I looked 1h later, it was pretty warm and powered off 1min later because battery had dropped to 1%.
I think this is pretty weird. I did not use the phone in that hour and had no apps running.
As illogical it might sound, my first suspect was the energy saving mode I enabled. I dont know why but I think it messed something up.
Does anyone have similar issues or any useful advice for me?

The developer believes those to be the best choices, I have no clue why. Interactive mostly stays near the max freq & makes my phone uber hot like an oven. Feel free to use Render kernel, its in the general section.
