The main difference I see is that the Amaze has a 1.5 dual core processor. The SGSII has been listed on some sites with 1.2 and on others with 1.5. If it is 1.2, I think the Amaze may be my choice.
The Amaze would also be my choice since Samsung has waited so long to release the GSII here, and they've refused to acknowledged the GPS issue with the Vibrant. I think my "never again" protest will be to actually never again purchase a Samsung product. Or at least not this time around.
I also don't like the 4.5" screen size that the SGSII for T-Mo is coming with. AT&T seems to be the only US carrier with enough sense in their heads to keep it at 4.3". Is the Amaze also supposed to be 4.5" of over-sized ridiculousness?
The issue isn't really the screen size, IMO. The issue is the screen resolution. They are increasing sizes to epic proportions, but not increasing the resolution which degrades video on the screen compared to 4-4.3" devices. 4.3" @ WVGA is already borderline for me. I require qHD for a 4.5-4.7" screen. It's just that simple. The phoen can be the hottest thing since sliced bread, but the screen is what I look at all the time I look at it. Vibrant colors aren't enough anymore. Need a better PPI.
If I had a choice, and if the Amaze does have 16GB internal storage... It's pretty much a no brainer. Amaze it is.
Only thing I don't like is that HTC Sense has become cluttered as **** lately. I used my Mom's inspire and got knocked the **** out when I long pressed on the home screen. There was so much crap there...

OMG, yea.. that .2" is the deal breaker for me! Especially considering that is measured diagonally! That is like .1" in each direction! And yes.. that is sarcasm. I don't think that .2" should be a defining characteristic to anyone unless the device itself gets significantly bigger than that as a whole.
I am not sure that this is the same on all devices(phones, tablets, pc/macs) but I am pretty sure THIS "--" is longer than .2". If you don't believe me, go find a ruler or tape measure, or I am pretty sure there is an app for that.. .2" is nothing.
Anyways, THAT aside.. I will agree to an extent that as screen size gets bigger, so should the resolution or ppi.. but then again it would have to significantly increase in size before you notice any degradation in quality. Yes, the iPhone has its "whatever the hell it's called" display(too tired lazy to remember/look it up), and MAYBE it is noticeable compared to devices like the vibrant.. but increasing to a 4.5" device isn't going to be a huge downgrade by far.
Besides, I haven't even considered the HTC amaze 4g.. why? I haven't heard it is coming to t-mobile(pretty sure it isn't..). I am not going to switch carriers for a phone.. the phone I buy is based on the carriers, what they offer, and the prices.. so is it coming for tmo? If not, than what reason do you have to switch to their carrier BESIDES the phone?

Aren't all of those the same specs the same that the prime is supposed to have, except for a 5mp camera(with a better sensor instead)? Except it will have ice cream sandwich? Haven't we learned anything from our vibrants? Buy a device that is either truly superior, or starts off with a better software upgrade.. I would rather have something that will software-wise be superior and equal or better hardware wise..
Not sure why my distaste for 4.5" displays twisted your panties so tightly, but have you ever held a phone that size in your hand? I have, and it wasn't comfortable. I'm not all that fond of the 4.3" size either, but its a little less of an adjustment to get used to, since I know several people with phones that size and have had a chance to compare them to my Vibrant. Rant about factual errors all you like; keep your rants about other people's preferences between your ears (doing that also has the added benefit of making it less obvious there's plenty of room there for rants to knock around).
The Amaze was called Ruby during development, if I'm not mistaken, and yes, its coming to T-Mo. So start thinking about it.

Price difference aside... I have no idea which I'm going to buy yet. I really like my Vibrant and wouldn't really hesitate to buy another Samsung device. On the other side, I like the screen resolution on the Amaze.
I like the fact that Cyanogen works at Samsung now, and how quickly Samsung has been with releasing source for their Galaxy S II phones (although not the T-Mobile variant yet from what I can tell).
I haven't had experience with HTC since the G1, are they as good at modding as the Samsung devices right now?
Amaze. It's an HTC and the specs are literally identical except the Amaze has a qHD 4.3" SLCD Screen vs. 4.52" WVGA SAMOLED+ and the Amaze has a superior camera.
Gonna have to go with the Amaze 4G, provided I even decide to waste another Year+ with T-Mobile.
However, it's rumored that the Galaxy SII has support for AT&T UMTS/HSPA+ Bands, as well.
If that's the case, I'll get the GSII and ETF after a month and move to AT&T, since T-Mobile has less bloatware they put on their devices... Only two GSM Carriers here so a T-Mobile phoen with all brands is as good as an Unlocked, Unbranded device...
If the Amaze 4G has those bands as well, then it's a blow-out. There's also the possibility to just get a Cheap Atrix 4G and call it a day. With the updates those run decently now.

The correct CPU is 1.5 Ghz Dual Core Qualcomm, which is basically the same on both the Galaxy S2 and Amaze
many of those blog sites are waaaaaaaay outdated
I'll go for the Galaxy S2 (hercules) for the SAMOLED+ screen, the Amaze uses sLCD
other than that, both phone are almost identical

HTC needs to stick with the people who made the Droid incredible 2 super lcd screen. Those displays are spectacular. I don't think I'll be going with the amaze 4g. Sense is nice the amaze has 3.5 sense no idea what's the difference between 3.0 and 3.5. I know partially that sense 3.5 doesn't have hardware limitations. Besides the screen size and the UI overlays the phones are the essentially the same. I'm still going for this phone so tired of HTC's hit and misses on phones.

I agree the Amaze 4G is clearly a better phone but why is it SO FAT and heavy! Look at its dimensions...nearly a small brick in fatness and it weighs 176g without any sort of sliding keyboard or anything. It's weight is not even in battery as the battery is a 1730mah or 1750mah...not even the 1850mah that the Hercules has.
I'm a little dissappoint in the physical design on the phone. Wish Samsung would have crammed a 720p screen on the Hercules and then we would not even be talking about this. Sigh.

SAMOLED+ vs. sLCD screens has nothing to do with 1080p Video Recording
a screen it's just a screen its function is only to display stuff, not record
the recording part is done by the camera and the video encoding chip inside the phone

TBH - most of the reviews I've seen about the Sensation/Amaze screen state that they are inferior to the SGSII - regardless of the resolution. LCD is simply an inferior technology.

I like the look and I like the specs but I don't think its enough of an upgrade to warrant replacing my vibrant. I HIGHLY doubt its running gingerbread either. Probably 2.2 or god forbid 2.1.
Samsung may have the best screens on the planet but their update schedule is very poor. They're even worse than motorola. 4.5 inches isn't enough to get me to buy another touchwiz device. Show me 4.5 Vanilla android and then we're talking.

It gets rid of the PenTile Matrix! Thank god. That is the worst feature of the Super AMOLED screen. Nothing like a screen door effect and lower effective resolution to damage a screen. A normal RGB layout will look phenomenal with the Super AMOLED. Now they just need to upgrade the actual resolution. I think a 1280 x 720 resolution on the 4"+ screens would be ideal.
At this point and after the rumors the other day about honeycomb requiring dual core, I wouldn't consider anything without a dual core a worthy upgrade to the vibrant.
Only thing I see this is good for is official froyo, then again we have the leaks anyways and without that crappy rfs. May be a porthole to official gingerbread since the specs other than the screen should be the same, that is is it gets gingergread .
Once again, it has great hardware, but RFS, TouchWiz and the inevitable lack of software support are major turn-offs.

Yea, a Single Core CPU is not future proof enough. 200MHz is not worth it (probably just an overclocked Hummingbird, Lulz).
If it's only a 512 RAM device then it will have only 326 MB of RAM for the system which isn't enough - not falling for the Vibrant gimmick again.
Moto is releasing a Dual Core 1GB RAM HSPA+ phone on AT&T, though.
I'll probably switch carriers to get that one when it releases.
BTW, thses AT&T phones have 21mbps HSPA+ radios in them, not the 14.4mbps radios in the T-Mobile G2/MT4G. AT&T's HSPA+ network is probably twice to 3x the size of T-Mobile's.
They need to find a way to put 17-1900 mAh batteries in these phones.
Specs and screen sizes going up, with more stuff in them, but battery sizes staying the same. Sorry, I'm not going to depend on an SoC change to give decent battery life on the same battery size going from device to device...

Vibrant is 4" and the Dell Streak is 5" so 4.5 isn't all that big. It's barely bigger than the HD2/HD7 and if you compare the screen sizes on the HD2 to the Vibrant it isn't all that big.
I actually prefer 4" as the max for a WVGA screen since that resolution doesn't tend to look that good on devices with very large screens...
I used to be htc fan and but now I am considering to move to samsung.
Nexus S seems a phone almost perfect.
but I really like a phone with big screen size from 4.3" to 5".

But it's not SAMOLED Plus, or even SAMOLED (regular). If you're looking for something similar to the Galaxy S, seems like that would be a major part of what you're looking for, since that's the most distinguishing feature of the Galaxy S derivative phones. But that was an assumption I made, not part of the specific request of the OP.
I'm so hooked on SAMOLEDs that I can't imagine using anything else. The iPhone 4 comes close, but all those other LCD screens are just butt-ugly to me now that I'm used to SAMOLED. YMMV.

I used to feel similarly when I had my Epic 4G. But I got so fed up with it I finally traded it for an Evo and sure, I could tell it wasn't a SAMOLED but it wasn't as bad as I had thought. If a better phone comes along, I'd be more than willing to trade in the Nexus S. Its just a matter of the pros out weighing the cons (IE: something being so great about the other phone that it makes me forget about the lack of Google updates).

Agreed. I'm not as enamored of the first in line for Google updates as most. It's the overall experience I want. Display is the most important to me, in terms of size and appearance. I'd have a tough time going for something where the blacks aren't the inky blacks of the (S)AMOLEDs, but some android phone with an iPhone 4 display of 4" or 4.3" and otherwise superior tech to Sammy's current offerings would certainly tempt me away.
I'm in no rush for dual core on my phone until there's actually an advantage in having it for the normal everyday stuff I do (email, text, web, some apps...not a big gamer here).
I tried an EVO for 30 days. Sprint service was worse than T-Mobile's, the "3G" speeds were slower than my iPhone and i9000 and Nexus One were on EDGE only. I didn't care for the yellowish tint of my screen, which separated after just 13 days. Never will go back to that one! I'm sure mine was just a lemon on the screens, but the Sprint service was being attacked by everyone at the time, and when I had it, 4G was just a random on/off testing thing downtown, nowhere near where I live and work.

I left Sprint for all of those reasons, but I loved the Evo. It was miles better than my Epic and the screen was actually quite good, though admittedly not as good as on the NS or Epic. The one downside was that I am quite enamored with dark backgrounds and those just don't look as good on a standard LCD. So on the Evo I switched to colorful which was a nice change to be honest, considering how dark I keep my SNS for battery life.
Hey i got this from a dutch forum, but Samsung is gonna release the Galaxy S2 in a while, its suppossed to have a 4.5" screen with super amoled plus, so goodby to pentille technology, which means more sub pixels per pixel!

I agree. Almost to the point where samoled has ruined things for me. Any new non-samoled phone I get, I'll be disappointed with how it's not samoled. I just can't get over how awesome the blending of blacks on screen to the screen bezel is. Truly epic.

Hardware specification is quite good. my dream phone is a little bit bigger and a little bit higher screen resolution.
I really don't like the top/bottom black stripe. Won't removing them make the phone more compact? Honestly I would still prefer Desire HD's design. But HTC is a bit behind in hardware specification.
I tried the Atrix and HTC Inspire in-store, and while I absolutely want an upgrade, I'm not convinced either is good enough, and am looking beyond to the next wave of Android phones on AT&T, unless nothing better is coming anytime soon.
I am subject to an odd process where I put in for an upgrade now and will get approval in four months, at which point I get to choose a new phone, which means I merely need to know that a phone I want will be available four months from now. If a good phone is coming in 5 or 6 months, it makes sense to wait, otherwise, I can put in now and see, four months from now, if the Atrix's bootloader has been smashed to hell and good custom ROMs are available, and if not, get an Inspire.

Looking at all that, I'm thinking that the best bet is that the only true Atrix competitor is the S2, and assume that it will come out mide July, like the Captivate. I can put in for an upgrade in late March, which should give the S2 enough time to come to market and be reviewed, plus the Atrix to hopefully get some ROMs, and make the call.
Are there any other phones worth looking forward to? Is there any other reason to choose the Inspire or Infuse, or to not put my chips on the Atrix or Infuse?
There is always going to be a group of new phones coming out soon. I'd say just pick the one you like the most at the time. If something else you can't live without comes out in a few months (and it will) just sell the phone you bought to cover most of the out of contract price of your next one.
I returned my Inspire to get the Atrix so that's where I stand there.
I would never buy another Samsung Android device unless the show a commitment to upgrading. They tend to just want you to buy the next phone instead.
LG Optimus looks nice, but I hate LG phones so I'd stay away. Generally poor build quality and software.

I'm typing this on my inspire. Saying that, I love it a lot. It is my first android, and in my opinion probably the best way to enter it.
My only complaint is the battery. Even being small, it does power management well and lasts longer than my dads iphone 3gs. (maybe some debate if that's froyo I guess)
With rooting/roms, I'm sure I could make the battery last longer by removing bloat ware and stuff.
the way I see it, phones are out matched months after they come out. Better phones will be developed even after phones are announced. That's what competition does to technology. So why torture yourself thinking about what MAY come out, when months later better suff will be out.

Perhaps. I guess what I'm really asking is that, now that the Atrix is available and people have tried it out, do they still want the Atrix, or is it worth waiting just a couple more months?

Absolutely. I think that what it comes down to is:
The Atrix got us all very excited, but the excitement is fading under a number of negatives:
1 - terrible pricing on the dock and tethering policy
2 - Motorola's pointless signing of the bootloader, which only removes value from the device
3 - the laptop dock has a lot of dissapointments (touchpad, speed)
On the other hand, the Atrix is still an incredible phone, and it goes us excited for some great reasons:
1 - killer processor
2 - huge battery
3 - unique features (docks, fingerprint reader)
4 - somewhat rare features (front facing camera, lots of internal [non-MicroSD] storage, HDMI out)
What makes it tough is the Galaxy S2, which doesn't have the unique features, but has everything else the Atrix has and more
Vs. Atrix:
Atrix negatives:
2 - Samsung's are easier to load custom ROMs on
Atrix positives:
1 - Also has a killer processor, one that, when tested, could even beat the Atrix
2 - Larger than average battery
4 - better rare features (better front facing camera, more internal storage
And its own positives:
1 - better camera
2 - Super AMOLED plus screen (amazing bright colors, lower power usage)
3 - bigger screen
4 - Gyroscope
5 - 1080p video
And just one known negative:
1 - Lower resolution screen
So, what this thread should really be is:
Do you still want the Atrix, or do you plan on waiting just 5 months for the Galaxy S2?
My upgrade date is in three days, I'm hoping that they'll crack the bootloader issue for the atrix pretty soon, I will not buy the phone without it.
The only real con I see for the Atrix is the lack of an LTE radio on it, if you get one you'll be stuck with it for the next two years ( unless you want to pay full price ) and LTE should be up and running ( in some areas ) in that time frame.
Even though I've been an ATT customer for 8 years I hold no loyalty to them, I'm waiting for more info to come on the HTC " pyramid " and could switch to T-Mobile if that phone has a bigger battery than the pathetic things that HTC puts in them now. We all know HTC seems to be the devs favorite brand and CM would positively fly on a dual core phone.
After owning a Craptivate I wont even consider another Samsung phone. I don't care how impressive the specs are Samsung will find a way to screw it up. If you don't like the Atrix then just wait a few months for the next great HTC phone. The Inspire is nice, but it' s just a lightly upgraded Evo and cant compete with the Atrix.

I love HTC, and really wanted my next phone to be an HTC. But I feel like I can't rely on them to bring good hardware to AT&T. My current phone is their Rhodium, and since then I've seen:
Droid Incredible - Looks great, not on AT&T
Desire Z - Great keyboard, not on AT&T
Evo - Kinda special at the time, but not on AT&T
7 Pro - Amazing keyboard, probably never coming to AT&T
Aria - Wonderful phone, my wife loves it, but not for power users
I felt like HTC all of a sudden decided it hated AT&T. Now we've got two new ones:
Inspire - updated Evo, decent but old hat, doesn't stand up to the other phones released at the time
Thunderbolt - slightly better than the Inspire, not coming to AT&T
I hope HTC comes up with something special by summer, but I'm not holding my breath. I am on my fourth consecutive HTC phone, and right now, it looks like my last.

Looks pretty cool but i'm not sold on qualcom's cpu/gpu's yet. I'd want to see how the sensation performs in the real world before even considering this. Plus how good does 480x800 resolution look when stretched out to 4.5 inches?

The vibrant may be aging a little bit, but it's definitely no POS. Why all the hate?
Yeah I also think 4.5 inches with the SAME resolution as the 4.0 Vibrant is a BIT too big. If they are going with such screen size, at least try to double or 1.5x the pixel resolution. I think I'mma get an international SGS2 when prices settle a bit lower. I don't use 3G anyway.

Get a HTC for your LED Notification. Why complaining ??? It's your choice to get the Vibrant and the whole world knows it does not have LED Notification.

Why complain that Samsung is releasing a "new" phone that's missing basic or "new" features? I haven't said anything against the vibrant maybe you need to reread. I'm content with my vibrant. Love the screen. Would love to have a 4.5 inch SAMOLED phone with a higher resolution to match, a notification led, working gps, dual core processors, 3D cameras, a metal frame, a kick stand, and a battery that doesn't die every 6 hours. This "new" phone is not it.
I'm for technological progress, not releasing "new" things with subpar attributes.
Super amoled plus .. not the same display as the vibrant ... same as the sg2 .. its dual core...

Congratulations. I hope you have fun with your ****ty EVO 3D which will match every single one of your requirements, including that ****ty battery life and a gimmick called 3D on a PHONE. And where have you been? The snapdragon mentioned is a dual core, just not a ARM A9. But then again, you'll be too lost in your ****ty battery life and constantly trying to find a charger to plug in your EVO 3d to even care.

Retard i said nothing about a EVO 3D. I was describing what a new phone in 2011 should look like. And gimmick... just because you can't afford a 3D tv doesn't mean the rest of the world can't. EVO 3D's don't have SAMOLED screens either.
I didn't say the snapdragon wasn't a dual core either. Man you need to go back to grammar school so you can relearn how to read.

Congratulations for reading your own post. If you rephrased it correctly, you could have stated "Along with the dual core processor and the 4.5 inch SAMOLED PLUS screen, I would prefer that Samsung incorporated a higher resolution (already did with SAMOLED Plus and the ridding of pentile), a notification LED, a better GPS, 3D cameras, and a metal frame and kickstand (both useless as they dent and add no useful function unless you can't hold your own device, while increasing the weight of the device).
And funny, as the specs you mentioned correspond almost directly to the EVO 3D.

Yes, in YOUR opinion. Not everyone wants a brick device in their pockets, or a 3D camera as opposed to the better Samsung 8 megapixel camera, and not everyone needs a 3D function that will only drain battery further and add price to the device.
And to your 3D comment, I find no use for 3D whatsoever. It only wastes your eyesight even faster than a normal screen. I would much prefer my 56 inch Samsung LED TV. Funny how you mention how I can't afford anything, as I live in Southlake, Texas, one of the cities in the U.S. with the highest incomes per capital.

Brick device? Where do you get that from. Why not have 2 Samsung 8 megapixel cameras? Why not have 2 Samsung 12 megapixel cameras with swapable lenses? How does having a 3D function deminish battery life? And add to the price? These are $600-700 phones, if these are TOP OF THE LINE phones **** price. I wouldn't buy a ferrari if i was afraid of the price, it's a ferrari.

Because metal would only add weight?
As for the camera, two would again only add size and weight.
3D would require the screen to use more power to display those gimmick 3D effects.
Manufacturers will continue to add those useless functions on a phone and increase the prices for those functions. My Vibrant was 500 off contract without tax, T-Mobile will only increase the price on these new phones with these useless functions. For example, the Droid Charge runs at 300 on contract as opposed to the normal 200.

yeah i heard about the epic 2.. but I want that galaxy II BEFORE they release a galaxy III! 2012 will be samsungs year especially if they get CM team on board, you'll see a lot of htc devs jump ship.
I'm holding out for a 4.3" screen with a keyboard from Samsung. I couldn't really care any less about the number of processors.
i don't think it will be an "epic 2" though. i'm positive there's no keyboard.

So sounds like it will be pretty much the same phone but with a higher clocked processor and an 8 mp camera. Obviously not worth upgrading if you already have an epic, but maybe this will extend the updates life of the original epic even more if the rest of the hardware is identical.

+1 on the 4+" screen size, I need more screen realistate! 4" just isn't cutting it for me anymore.
SAMOLED+ on the 4.3-4.5" screen would be nice too!

The Evo is 4.3" I really dont see a huge difference. its not like a whole 1" Differnece.
Boy...this would really be a dumbed down version of what Samsung touts as the SGSII. Can Sprint really bastardize a phone this much??!!

The Epic 2 has nothing to do with the Galaxy S II. Its a completely different phone. The Samsung/Sprint Within is the Galaxy S II version coming to sprint.

I think you are overreacting a bit. Reading the story, it seems there are 2 samsung phones, one is an iteration on the Epic and the other is the "Full Touch". I would say that is the phone to compare to the SGS II.
What a Epic 2 could mean is the two phones are similarly spec'd, it could put the Epic 1 on a path to receiving android updates for another year.
It looks better than the Epic no doubt ... but it's not that good for a phone dropping in E3 Sammy + Sprint are all ready planning on screwing this phone over i can feel it.

Ah, why would sammy go and screw this phone over like that? This was the phone of the year, lol, it should top all phones out there just like this one did.

I wish Samsung would have reworked their keyboard on the EPIC II to make it more user friendly. The keys on the Epic seem hard and sticky whereas the keyboard on the HTC Arrive was a lot smoother.
Hopefully the "EPIC III" fixes this issue.....
Nice find, the Epic 2 doesn't sound so Epic compared to the Within. It seems like Samsung is just improving the Epic just like the Samsung Transform was a supped up Moment. Guess we should all start getting used to Swype if we want high-end phones.

Yeah but the Transform was the "BABY" Epic and the Intercept was the 2nd Gen Moment but failed to be a successor to it.
I hate it how sprint pulls the moment/intercept/transform on us >.>
I had hopes they would spec bump the Epic 2 with the SGS2 specs..but this is sad...really not worth upgrading over :/..at best it might be worth it if you get sprint to replace your epic with this I guess..but overall I am disappointed :/
Still, i feel the epic is still top of the line, its the first phone that they got all the hardware correct on, not leaving things out
An epic 2 should hold the name epic by having the same hardware as ours but with dual core 1.4ghz, 8mp,1.3 front facing, 4" or 4.3 inch screen and keyboard with 16gb onboard memory
^^^^This would be a truly epic phone and i would pay for it no matter the cost
But lets get back to reality i think the best phone with the hardware we want including keyboard is the epic, i dont think there will be another one that can top the epic from sprint/samsung or sprint/htc.
