Making the switch to EC05 after GB?! - Epic 4G General

So, I've been using every GB leak and now I'm fed up. I've been getting random reboots here and there. I'm sure many factors come into play like signal strength, apps, background services, Oc/uV..Sometimes I don't get any for like a couple days, then out of nowhere I get two in the same day and important times when I needed to use my phone, and it makes me (EX: Taking a picture at a special time, or getting a phone number, or playing music while Google Navigating, etc). So now I'm back on EC05. I forgot I could OC/UV, navigate, listen to music, and check a number for a friend all without my phone overheating . But I do wish themers didn't give up on EC05! We do have a great set of themes, but if you check any of the other Galaxy S theme section there are several that we should get ported! So to conclude my rant, are you on EC05 or GB?

i switched back to EC05 cuz i need my gps and had alot of random reboots and battery life sucked

I am on GB currently, but I have been contemplating the switch back to EC05, more specifically, back to SRF 1.2. The only thing holding me back is I love my theme, and if I went back to EC05 I would lose a few things, such as transparent apps and my lock screen. I have had my fair share of problems with GB including random reboots, the back lit keys do not turn off when running Netflix, and a few other minor annoyances.
Also, one main problem with switching back, is I would need to reinstall all my apps and I can't use Titanium Backup. People have noted problems when restoring GB apps on EC05.

For the theme, the stock SRF1.2 theme is awesome. If thats not your taste, then MattedBlue or Emotionless Beast are up there. Lockscreen mod is def better in the GB builds, BUT if you use LiveLocker or my personal fav WidgetLocker, you'll forget about the lockscreen mod!
Personally, I've used TBackup everytime. I even used it to restore my apps from GB to Froyo. What I do is first restore all my apps without data. Then I go through the apps that I need the data (ie: wavelauncher, handcent, widgetlocker); pretty much any app that I have setup to my liking and I don't want to go through each one and fiddle with the settings again. Then I reboot my phone. There are some apps that don't restore that I wanted to, so just load up Tbackup, let it refresh the app list, then scroll all the way to the bottom, and restore the apps you want one by one (on average there are like 4 apps that don't restore properly the first time but restore perfectly WITH data after. IE: Amazon appstore, miui compass, battery calibration..). Hope this helps

Back to stock EC05. Had the phone reboot on me a couple of times when it was quite inconvenient. Have to have it now also because my wife is sick and I can't afford to miss a call if she needs me.

Battery life was excellent for me on GB but the random reboots were not. I'm so OC about things that I couldn't stand it anymore, I didn't even try EH17 I'll wait for official GB or upgrade in December.

Battery < 50% = 200-1000
Voltages:

Reboots are never cool when they aren't intentionally executed, but I'm staying on EH17.. its not that crazy with reboots, and it only happens when idle, never when I'm using the phone. I'm just awaiting the official version of GB and I'll be flashing the deodexed official version as soon as its ready.

Leaks... as the name implies its never good, its been something that for good or for bad it just slipped out of where it shouldn't and its not a prime time ready version... think about it, its not even a BETA version.
Thats why I stick with a ROM from official source.

I've played with most all the GB leaks, and while I generally get slightly better battery life with GB, there are certain features that just don't work well enough for me, so always back to EC05 for my daily use.

I wouldn't say that themers have given up on EC05, but there isn't a huge need to constantly update the themes that are out there, nor has there been a huge demand for new ones.
In my case, Honeycomb Fusion Explosion EC05 was updated about a month ago so there's not much that can be done with that one. Dark Horse could use an update, but no one has been commenting in that thread or asking for one so I haven't worked on it much and wasn't really planning on putting a big lot of time into it until GB becomes official. As for the other theme's I've worked on, there wasn't nearly enough demand to keep up on them without request to do so.
As far as other ports go, I would not be against doing them as long as it was from a froyo build on another galaxy s device and I had some interest in the theme. Why? Because those ports are quick and easy. The fact is that even the easiest ports still can take 5-10 hours to do. To give you an idea, just porting HFCE from EH06 to EH17 took me a bit over 4 hours. Now if you port a CM7, Sense or theme chooser theme, those take much longer because of the xml edits, all the images you have to create to replace images that are not in those themes, and so on. It can take 20-30 hours which seems like a waste when GB is right around the corner.
A few of my thoughts on the issue.

Just went back to EC05 myself. I forgot how smooth and fast that was, and no reboots. I do miss the CRT off ani, but I think I can make it.

EC05 SRF 1.2 here.
EG22 was decent and EH17 just seemed to dislike my phone. To be honest, I find it pointless to update being that not many Dev's are working on leaks. Plus, I prefer stability over minor appearance changes.
Sent from the future.

My wife has an earpiece quit on her epic. I ordered a new earpiece and installed it...still didn't work. I knew it had to be an internal issue. We called sprint and even after owning the phone for over a year they told us $35 would cover it. In fear of getting hassled over having eg22 I Odin dk28 and accepted the ota. Took it to them. They replaced the entire front w another one. It fixed the issue. Funniest hing is her battery lasts all day now. I bought an anker 1800 that we were finally getting 15 hrs on eg22, to 20+ hours on ota ec05.
Ec05 stock unrooted does not perform the way eg22 did. The speed of the system is down. The checkerboard browser. The feel isn't as crisp. But, the phone last all day and my wife is pretty happy with it. I am patiently waiting gingerbread ota and hoping it will come soon.
Her battery is really so much better after doing this that it is really work leaving it alone...especially since I'm not the one dealing w it lol

I tried all the GB leaks, but in the end I always came back to SRF 1.2 because it performed like a dream. The ACS team really have done an amazing job with that ROM.

EC05 here...Urban Regeneration, ERA ReVolt, an SRF 1.2 are my choices but after a ton of testing, I seem to be back on Regen the most. The battery life from CompKid's tweaks he made and everything working is huge for me. So, its Urban Regen, Genocide 2.0, SetCPU "on demand" 1400/100 no undervolt and Simply Blue theme. EDIT...changed the font to Sony Sketch since these screenies

DI18 2.1 unrooted > DK28 2.2 rooted

I've been playing around with this phone a lot since I got it. Today, I flashed back to DI18 and left it unrooted and found myself astonished at how much better the overall performance is.
DK28 is garbage.
If this is old news, I apologize... I just got this phone a week ago.
huh? i've only had my phone since tuesday, i haven't rooted it as of yet... but i wanted to see what that froyo is all about.
Don't do it. It's fun to play with, but like the OP said, if you want something that works reliably and well, stay stock.
Bonsai dk28 works great for me, but to each his own.

I have nothing against people who experiment with different baked ROMs on their phones--after all, where would we be without 'em?--but the performance of stock 2.1 on my Epic was already solid enough that I only really felt I needed to root for a few specific apps. I think any flashing I was going to do was always going to wait until official 2.2 was out and more development is done. I am jonesing for the new features and hopefully speed but am patient.

Agree bonsai is fantastic, no bugs what so ever and very clean and fast. Way better then 2.1 stock battery life ia about the same.
i wont go back to d118, i will miss hulu and, humans vs, aliens and andy 83 those apps only work on 2.2 and my phone has been running fantastic and way better then d118.
GPS works better!
Wifi Works perfect!
Orientation switch is fast!!
And what ever other bugs people are having im having 0
I'm running stock DK28 and it works absolutely flawless, dunno why so many have issues, I have none

I agree with the OP. I was running Nebula 1.0.7 and things were smooth for me but I went back to stock and outside of the progs that require 2.2, things are solid at least for me. Now I'm running Syndicate with Xtreme kernel and I'm loving it until we get the official Froyo

I just did the exact same thing!
Running Nebula, was getting weird issues, so I went back to Syndicate with Xtreme kernel v1.2.
Ahh, everything is so snappy. I'll stick with this for a while.

Flashing to Midnight ROM 3.2 is the best thing I ever did.
I love my Epic 4G…I loved it with Eclair, and I am now using midNIGHT 3.2 BYOR and I love it. It’s benchmark scores are twice as fast as Eclair, and you can tell how fast and snappy the phone is. Here is a list of the things I like best that Froyo was needed for.
1. Chrome to Phone – Huge time saver and way more useful than I thought it was going to be, and I thought it would be useful, lol
2. Flash 10.1
3. The apps that needed Froyo for enhancement… Gmail, Youtube, Winamp (there is a station I like on Shoutcast and Winamp required Froyo for Shoutcast)
4. Google Docs – being able to edit Google Docs on the go. The reason I wanted a phone with a keyboard was for doing long emails and editing documents and spreadsheets. The on-screen keyboard is OK, but takes up a lot if real estate.
5. Moving apps to the SD Card – I am an app junkie and I need the space, lol
There are more things, but those are the most important to me. It is was like I got a new phone for a second time. Some of the other things I think that help make the phone better that are not Froyo “items” are the Gingerbread Keyboard (really, really good, better than iOS in my opinion), ASOP Lock Screen, and the EXT4 file system.
I still liked the phone when it had Eclair, and I wouldn’t go back and buy a different phone (and I like it on Froyo even better), it is nice hardware, awesome 5-row keyboard, and it’s AMOLED screen rocks and everyone who see’s it immediately compares it to their own back lit LCD screens, and develops a serious case of envy, lol. I am old enough to know that companies will be companies and will always make and break promises(Apple customers have to put up with a company that said their alarm was fixed in November to have it happen again in January and tells them they are holding their phone wrong). It would be nice if they always kept their promises, but they can’t. If companies were 100% honest, no one would buy their products just like if politicians were 100% honest, no one would vote for them. It would be nice to think we still would, but if we would….wouldn’t there already be 100% honest companies and politicians, lol

Been running TrulyEpic 1.5 and quite pleased with the performance, features, battery-life, etc. I really really like that it now boots in < 30 seconds. (I swap batteries instead of charging, so quick boot times are especially nice).
2.1 Eclair simply unusable because of the Calendar and Bluetooth Voice Search bugs.
But beyond that you're just wrong on performance in Eclair vs Froyo.

How many of you are happy with EB13?

I updated my Epic on the day EB13 was released. I used the update.zip using the stock recovery on my stock/rooted DI18 (no data/cache wipes before updating) which kept all my data and apps intact. After the update, the only problems I had were the one related to the camera (video lag in low light and still camera FC in sport mode), but after the kernel fix was introduced (thanks to mkasick) I have had absolutely ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, NO problems. Granted I am still using basically the stock EB13 rooted only with Launcher Pro, but everything has worked as it should (GPS, SMS, MMS, video recording, camera, music player, SD card, etc.). The only issue for me is probably the checkerboarding on the stock browser which is not a big deal for me anyways.
How many of you have been happy with your EB13 upgrade experience?
I am waiting for a custom ROM.

I flashed eb13 with the samsung exe and immediately got root access and changed over to deodexed/ext4 and with the lastest genocide kernel .... close to perfect ... with the overclock and pretty heavy use battery life is darn good, amazingly. My battery app estimates 11.5 hrs @ 58%. I'm constantly picking the thing up and using it today. All apps run fine and now the browser is substantially faster than the wifes laptop! Was just on the gamestop site with a flash game review playing along side a bunch of animated adds and it still played great. 1375/3020 smartbench. This is all the "phone" I'll need for some time to come! Since the camera fix in genocide kernel, all regrets are gone. Plus, if you love video media like I do, you MUST have 2.2 as the video decoding and audio decoding are sgnificantly improved. 2.1 would stutter a bit with very high bit rate stuff. 2.2 makes the best quality video play FLAWLESSLY. Never a dropped frame. Even @2mbit/sec. Watching a movie on my phone is nearly as pleasing as my well calibrated big screen.

Not me. Its seems much better at first. But when you start getting random fc's here and there it tells you somethings wrong. In all honestly I think 2.1 eclair ran this phone with ease like a current machine would run winxp. No problems and everythings snappy. Works the way its suppose to. Throw win7 in and now youve complicated things by adding in bore instruction sets that might conflict. Not to say that it isn't gonna work well but we can clearly see sprint was full of **** when they said they were thoroughly testing for bugs. Build the is from the ground up with gingerbread. Until that happens were gonna keep getting updates that fix **** instead of updates that turn our epics for the better. Its what this hardware deserves. Next year when tegra 2's are mainstream phonemena hummingbird will be the mid level tier. Even with 2.2 I still think this hardware has more to give.
My 2 cents.

That's impossible in all honesty. With the way people were crying about the 2.2 update to build something from kernel up and redo it people would be crying "gingerbread is taking too long" screw Samsung, and Sprint...
i odin'd back to DI18 a day before EB13 and only restored contacts.
once EB13 dropped, i wiped everything 3 times w/ clockwork, upgraded via the update.zip method. Then did the 1 click root, and manually re-installed all my apps etc.
The one thing that really kills the 'new' froyo for me is the bluetooth problems still being present like on DK28. I got so damn irritated w/ DK28's bluetooth problems that i actually went back to 2.1
Now that i'm using EN13, I'm still pretty honked off but it hasn't irritated me enough yet to go back to eclair.. depends on how flaky the bluetooth becomes.
So far, I'm running stock EB13, 1 click root, genocide kernel installed yesterday) and gonna gauge battery life.
I'm really wanting to try out the MIUI and/or cyanogenmod once they're a little less buggy.. the devs are making great progress, but i need a fairly non-buggy phone for work so that's why i'm waiting (not complaining.. i experiment on the weekends w/ ROMs and such)

Best Epic Rom? (In your opinion)

Hello fellow XDA members. I have become obsessed with flashing Roms lately so I wanted to start this thread to figure out which Rom to flash next for my Epic.
So here is my question, What is the Best Rom in your opinion and why? It can be any Epic rom and for any reason(stable, fast, battery life, etc) The more reasons the better. So answer below and we can have a good discussion of this as well. I am not trying to promote or put down any Roms this is just for my use, and perhaps others that don't know which one to use next. I will probably start a poll soon too.
If you like flashing so much, just try them all, stay with one for a while and keep the one you like the most... not everyone has the same experiences with ROMs and peoples opinions differ. Just try them yourself.

I know that, and I plan to do so. I just figured this would be a good discussion thread, for the general discussion thread.
The opinions of the users matter when it comes to Roms. So I thought it would be nice for a place to compare and contrast what each Roms are missing and what they are bringing to the table.
Personally i like syndicates frozen rom with impalers keyboard patch but then love midnights byor because its empty of bull**** pretty much but find bonsai to be effiecient so its hard to really choose between them all and with the right kernel but right now im running syndicates 1.1.0 with visionkernel 1.4ghz setup

Stock.
It's stable. Battery life is good after removing bloat, freezing DRM, and deleting SNS.
FROZEN 1.1. works for me.. Tried the others, but find this to be the best for me.
Not only is the ROM top notch, but it has the best support out there. Those guys are right on it when someone has a problem, and they show such patience when dealing with the same question for the 1000th time..
SyndicateRom Frozen version 1.0.2.
I run the old version because it seems to run faster, and I have less problems with it. (please don't respond and tell me how I'm wrong and/or how to fix it. I am so incredibly happy with 1.0.2 that I will likely never change to a different froyo rom.)
+1 for ACS. I thought I was happy on Bonsai, then I started seeing more themes for ACS rather than Bonsai so I switched and haven't looked back. Better battery life and easy auto-backup/restore are my main points.
The one con is I'm no longer stable at 100mhz. Hoping a kernal update will fix this soon.

Force
Bonsai!
Its been the most stable, great speed, everything seems smooth, and it back ups data.
I love it!
I'm done with roms...back when I was on stock EB13 with a few modifications, (Ext4, custom kernal, overclocked) my phone was running BEAUTIFULLY. No issues at all whatsoever. Then I got convinced to flash a custom ROM when EC05 dropped. So I did it. I've tried Syndicate, Midnight and Viper and none of which ran as smoothly as my stock phone with a few modifications. Syndicate gave me FC's left and right, all day and all night. I tried wiping and reflashing several times...no dice...
Midnight gave me HORRIBLE battery life and random reboots. When I would press my power key to turn it off, my phone would freeze...then I would get a black screen with my keypad lit and the bottom touch buttons lit...but no option to turn my phone off. It would just vibrate periodically until I did a battery pull. I would then power the phone back up only to be introduced to the Setup Wizard each time and forced to log into my gmail. Again...I tried wipes and reflashing. That helped the setup wizard issue...but not the power down issue or the random reboots.
Viper...battery life was better. But the lag seemed too severe to justify after I had been spoiled on FLAWLESS performance.
So I plan on going back to EC05...completely stock and do my own thing from there. I've had nothing but bad luck on the custom ROM scene. I greatly respect and appreciate everything the devs are doing...but the custom ROMS are just not for me. I depend on my phone too greatly to have these issues reoccuring.
I would have to agree I like syndicate rom frozen. I haven't tied many but I like this one. it's very stable. No force closes or anything .
Samsung Epic 4g
I have tried syndicate (still have my backup should I want to reflash) it was nice, but I am currently am using red beast and the genocide kernel and my phone is running smoother than I thought possible. syndicate is great, but this rom is great too, and soooo beautiful lol

Another for Bonsai 4
Nebula has been a great and consistent rom through several releases. I will go back as soon as the ec05 version is ready. Testing out viper rom right now to see what eb13 is like, and thoroughly enjoying it. Pretty zippy and stable but seemed "bulky" with viper mods/addons out of the gate..... some are useful.

[Q] EF02 Reviews

What does everyone think of EF02?
I have EC05 rooted and have had occasional issues with visual voicemail (says cant play until I restart the device), texts not coming through properly, and misc other issues. I was considering going to a ROM such as bonsai, but thought maybe EF02 would be better since it's close to a stock release.
I use my phone for business and look for stability and battery life primarily with performance and eye candy ranked third or fourth. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

There are some kinks to work out. GPS is pretty iffy, and some apps don't work, for some reason. Still, it's clear the future is bright, cause I can't wait for something already this snappy to get rfs replaced, overclocked, and tweaked to hell like the froyo roms.
As for your other issues, I ported my number to google voice, so they handle all my texting/voicemail. No regrets so far, other than maybe that I can't use handcent anymore. People get my texts instantly too. My brother was at a ball game I was watching on tv once and was getting my texts along the lines of "He was safe!" so quickly after the plays he jokingly asked me if the TV was somehow ahead of live action.
One issue I'm having with EF02 is that I've lost the default shortcuts on the toolbar. All I have is Applications...
Anybody know how to get them back?

I'm taking aa i3 for a run. But for a worry free xperience do the following..
Odin eb13.
Get gps lock.
Root.
Flash ef02. Set it up to ur liking.
Odin ec05 modem.
If you use titanium backup then restore only app not data!

I've had no issues at all with EF02 w/EF10 modem. The only GPS issue I ever have is using check in on Facebook but the GPS locks fast so I think it's the Facebook app which in my opinion is pure garbage. It sucks on my girlfriends phone too and some of my coworkers have problems with the app as well.
I'm getting excellent performance. With 105+ apps installed, I'm getting 2500 on quadrant. I'm going to test gps in a few. All apps seem to be working.. i had some that didn't but i just uninstalled then reinstalled from market and it worked. Running i3 with GPS fix and chris41g rotation lag fix.

I ended up going back to EC05 for SRF 1.2, but thats out of personal preference for the SRF rom. In my experience with EF02, it was very good. Fast for RFS, pretty good battery life, and all around mostly pretty stable... seems Samsung/Sprint are pretty close to a final/official build to me.
I am using EF02 with EF10 modem and it has worked perfectly so far. GPS works better than ever. All of my apps work. And I have had none of the wierd EC05 force closing with the 3 vibrates. It works great for me and can't wait for the official to drop.
I have been using EF02 for a while (AR i2) and everything has been very good, I had some strange issues with the GPS at first but now everything is working fine.
I get 12-15 hours with moderate use, not nearly as good as some of the Froyo roms but worth it because of Skype/Netflix... With the EF10 modem I got about half that, so I went back to the EF02 modem and everything is great.
I thought ef02 aa i3 was pretty good. Memory issues pushed me back to froyo. The leak didn't seem to clear memory correctly and used too much. other than that and gps issues at first I was actually happy with it. All in all not to bad. These froyo roms seem to be to polished to continue on a leak rom though.

[Q] For all of those using SRF 1.2......

I have tried about 8-10 roms on my Epic since I got it when it came out. My favorite roms hands down have been ACS Syndicate Frozen 1.1 & 1.2. Accompanied by TwilightZone 1.1.1 Kernel, Frozen 1.1 had better reliability for me, but 1.2 performs the best with a random glitch here and there. I have tried to go to EH17, EG22, and lately EI22, but I get frustrated with them and always window up going back to SRF 1.2.
I have spent the past two days trying out the ERA EI22 rom. Nice fast rom, but I found myself missing Launcher Plus from SRF 1.2 and my battery life wasn't as good. I also was unable to send MMS messages (maybe cuz I stayed with EC05 modem?). The excessive use of overscroll glow (like even during horizontal scrolling when viewing a webpage in the browser) and animations didn't please me either.
Anyway, the problem is I really want to make the move to Gingerbread, but I keep finding myself going back to SRF 1.2 because its simply the ****. Is it just to early on for me to jump on the Gingerbread bandwagon if I want SRF1.2 features and reliability? What are all you SRF 1.2 fans doing? If you have taken a liking to a specific Gingerbread rom and deem it a suitable SRF 1.2 replacement, please share your opinion!
Thanks.
Also,
Is Launcher Plus compatible with any rom, or does it have to be pre-installed by a dev?
Silly question, but what are the significant changes/benefits from going from Froyo EC05 to Gingerbread EI22 anyways?
I still haven't made the jump to EI22. Been on SRF for a long time, except have switched to RandomROM Phoenix for a bit. It seems like there are still a few bugs in each of the EI22 custom roms, but I'm looking forward to trying CompKid's next release, as well as RandomROM Thunderhawk for EI22. Just gonna wait a few more day till the devs get all the kinks ironed out. SRF 1.3 is apparently a EC05 based ROM that may or may not see the light of day. Not sure when they'll make SRF for Gingerbread.
Launcher Pro is compatible with anything. You can download it from the market, clear the defaults under settings>applications for whatever launcher you were using. Then when you hit the home key it'll ask you what launcher you want to use and you can tell it to remember that choice to make Launcher Pro the default.
Cool thanks for that Launcher Pro info!
I've been using SRF for a long time. My only reason for trying a switch was something happened to the file system where I kept getting google framework fc's almost anytime i touched the screen. wiped and reflashed my trusty SRF 1.2, but one I restored my nandroid backup, problem came right back. I figured if I had to go thru a titanium backup restore, or no restore at all and start from scratch, I might as well try gbread.
This morning I updated to ACS recovery from CWM purple, and also installed a fresh SRF 1.2 and restored via titanium backup and all is good now!
I am as big a fan as anyone of ACS SRF 1.2, but since going to EI22 ERA am not looking back. GB is much smoother, my battery life is already better and my phone seems to work as it was intended. Miss my Zeam launcher, but also thought it was a source of my problems with 1.2. Miss my Emotionless Beast theme, but CRT animations make up for it. What GB needs is a working wireless Hotspot app (back to ad hoc wireless tether), and a rotation lag fix.
Go with thunderhawk ei22. I love my frozen 1.2 as much as anyone, but I don't think you will be disappointed in this rom. Great job as always Random!

There have been many ROMs that tempted me to move from SRF 1.2, but nothing seemed like a daily driver. I'm on the second day of ACS ICS EI22 and it's looking good so far. I did have to update the theme to fix an issue with the sub-menus, but the ROM is fast and everything works well.
For some reason trying to restore from my Titanium backup broke my contacts app. I had to re-flash and now I'm running from a clean install. There wasn't much that could tempt me away from SRF 1.2, but ACS ICS did it and I'm enjoying it so far.
I made the jump to EI22 and my phone doesn't like it any more than any of the other GB releases....soooooo I guess GB was not meant for me :/
Bump

I completely agree with this post. ACS ICS 3.5 is running perfectly for me so far, and even has improved my battery life significantly. The only thing I'm itching for is native flac support.
look for things to come in the SRF series.. soon

I'm optimistic we'll see something "soon", but this has been the on-going output from ACS since SRF 1.2 dropped in June.
Just saying ...

no offense but we've all been seeing this and rumors about 1.3 for months. The rumors aren't even details about the rom its usually just "I've been testing it and its great". I've been looking forward to it but with all this wait and buildup... I don't see it living up to the hype.
Hey Chris, I might be able to cook up an awesome boot animation for 2.3...

I too was a die hard fan of SRF 1.2, and to an extent still am.
I've been playing with the ACS-ICS Gingerbread rom for the past few days, and with the latest release V3.5, have to say that I think it will become my daily driver now with the SRF 1.2 as a close second fallback.

Another SRF 1.2 person that is really digging ACS ICS 3.5. I think that ICS is the new SRF for GingerBread.

Same here, it's been great to me so far and LauncherPro has been my launcher of choice so I'm glad they baked it in.
