Hello fellow XDA members. I have become obsessed with flashing Roms lately so I wanted to start this thread to figure out which Rom to flash next for my Epic.
So here is my question, What is the Best Rom in your opinion and why? It can be any Epic rom and for any reason(stable, fast, battery life, etc) The more reasons the better. So answer below and we can have a good discussion of this as well. I am not trying to promote or put down any Roms this is just for my use, and perhaps others that don't know which one to use next. I will probably start a poll soon too.
If you like flashing so much, just try them all, stay with one for a while and keep the one you like the most... not everyone has the same experiences with ROMs and peoples opinions differ. Just try them yourself.

I know that, and I plan to do so. I just figured this would be a good discussion thread, for the general discussion thread.
The opinions of the users matter when it comes to Roms. So I thought it would be nice for a place to compare and contrast what each Roms are missing and what they are bringing to the table.
Personally i like syndicates frozen rom with impalers keyboard patch but then love midnights byor because its empty of bull**** pretty much but find bonsai to be effiecient so its hard to really choose between them all and with the right kernel but right now im running syndicates 1.1.0 with visionkernel 1.4ghz setup

*in my best dj khali voice* We takin over......
We can't tell you witch is best. They all have there pros and cons. Flash them all to you find what suites your needs.

I was like u once.. got home from work and flashed a new theme and/or rom almost every day. Then I flashed syndicaterom frozen 1.1.0
I haven't flashed a thing in 3+ weeks.. because I haven't had a single issue. Its like this is the rom my phone was built to run

Stock.
It's stable. Battery life is good after removing bloat, freezing DRM, and deleting SNS.
FROZEN 1.1. works for me.. Tried the others, but find this to be the best for me.
Not only is the ROM top notch, but it has the best support out there. Those guys are right on it when someone has a problem, and they show such patience when dealing with the same question for the 1000th time..
SyndicateRom Frozen version 1.0.2.
I run the old version because it seems to run faster, and I have less problems with it. (please don't respond and tell me how I'm wrong and/or how to fix it. I am so incredibly happy with 1.0.2 that I will likely never change to a different froyo rom.)
+1 for ACS. I thought I was happy on Bonsai, then I started seeing more themes for ACS rather than Bonsai so I switched and haven't looked back. Better battery life and easy auto-backup/restore are my main points.
The one con is I'm no longer stable at 100mhz. Hoping a kernal update will fix this soon.
Sent from my Google Phone with a keyboard
I like ACS syndicate as well and is what I am running.
Also Bonsai 4 is good, use one of those 2.
ACS doesn't have both wired & wireless tether working really, but is supposed to next version.
Force
Bonsai!
Its been the most stable, great speed, everything seems smooth, and it back ups data.
I love it!
I'm done with roms...back when I was on stock EB13 with a few modifications, (Ext4, custom kernal, overclocked) my phone was running BEAUTIFULLY. No issues at all whatsoever. Then I got convinced to flash a custom ROM when EC05 dropped. So I did it. I've tried Syndicate, Midnight and Viper and none of which ran as smoothly as my stock phone with a few modifications. Syndicate gave me FC's left and right, all day and all night. I tried wiping and reflashing several times...no dice...
Midnight gave me HORRIBLE battery life and random reboots. When I would press my power key to turn it off, my phone would freeze...then I would get a black screen with my keypad lit and the bottom touch buttons lit...but no option to turn my phone off. It would just vibrate periodically until I did a battery pull. I would then power the phone back up only to be introduced to the Setup Wizard each time and forced to log into my gmail. Again...I tried wipes and reflashing. That helped the setup wizard issue...but not the power down issue or the random reboots.
Viper...battery life was better. But the lag seemed too severe to justify after I had been spoiled on FLAWLESS performance.
So I plan on going back to EC05...completely stock and do my own thing from there. I've had nothing but bad luck on the custom ROM scene. I greatly respect and appreciate everything the devs are doing...but the custom ROMS are just not for me. I depend on my phone too greatly to have these issues reoccuring.
I would have to agree I like syndicate rom frozen. I haven't tied many but I like this one. it's very stable. No force closes or anything .
Samsung Epic 4g
I have tried syndicate (still have my backup should I want to reflash) it was nice, but I am currently am using red beast and the genocide kernel and my phone is running smoother than I thought possible. syndicate is great, but this rom is great too, and soooo beautiful lol

Nebula has been a great and consistent rom through several releases. I will go back as soon as the ec05 version is ready. Testing out viper rom right now to see what eb13 is like, and thoroughly enjoying it. Pretty zippy and stable but seemed "bulky" with viper mods/addons out of the gate..... some are useful.

I love my epic but am terrified of bricking my phone. 2.1 is incredibly stable and was wondering if there was a 2.2 rom that someone like me could flash that was also extremly stable. I dont want to lose my epic , however I am kinda tired waiting. P.S yes I really people have asked this before however maybe things have changed ad one rom has become better than others. I am new and kinda scared to be honest, so please play nice
I like the Frankestein ROM because it is a blank slate.
Nebula rom is running as smooth as Cm6 for me right now doesn't show on quadrant but i can feel it and it is very stable.
And im loosing about 2% battery every hour.
I'm running nebula 1.0.7 and its silky smooth. Not one force close.

I was the same way as you about 2 weeks ago. scared to brick my phone. i started with Odin and the stock DK28.
But last week, I decided to try the SuperNova 1.6 and so far I am happy with it. But still afraid to try other community ROMs.
Here's another vote to Nebula 1.0.7. It runs incredibly smooth, quick, and stable. Been running Nebula for a few weeks without a hitch.
Nebula 1.0.7 has been running very smooth for me also
+1 to nebula 1.0.7 been using it since the first one. Stable fast and no fc.

Adding support for nebula 1.0.7

I've tried all the roms out here on xda, and Nothing so far comes close to Nebula ROM. I was running Nebula 1.0.6 since it was out on 1/2/2011 and no issues other then having a corrupted file system due to using the 3 button reboot. (don't use it ...there is a good chance it will mess up your phone, just not sure why it does it)
Yesterday right before going to Nebula 1.0.7, I've flashed all the different ROMS out to see how they are. After a bunch of testing I've decided to stay with Nebula.
All I can say is perfect! Its so smooth and fast that as soon as you boot up you notice the difference right away. I know Qudrant scores and other bench scores dont mean much but I've gotten my highest when using Nebula which was almost 1800 on Quarant and 1165/2686 Smartbench 2010. I've seen others get higher using other ROMS out there but for me it never felt as smooth/fast and responsive as Nebula ROM.
I too was scared and decided to go with the one that answers the most questions in a positive manner, in English (meaning I can understand, not literally) and have had great success with Midnight and TrulyEpic Rebirth.
These are smooth, stable, quick, great battery, allow you to add on the things
you want or miss, with links to add-ons, as well as you can theme them (that was my next big step).
So if you are on cw3, be sure to make a backup, you can flash back to that, then feel free to try them, see if you like layout and use. You can always go back if you make a backup then restore. Otherwise if you don't, its back to step 1.
Also, do you read Android Central - there is a lot of good info over there, a lot is in less techie terms (meaning English) with easy to understand directions.
Everyone starts somewhere, its building a comfort with someone to help just in case
I'm currently on Viper Rom (4.0.3 I think) with the Nexus S boot animation and a the DK28 Gingerbread Theme.
I've tried Supernova, Bonsai and stock DK28. I've found them all to be just as "stable" as 2.1. It's looking like I'll be trying Nebula next, given the support here. Great thing is, it takes about 10 minutes to switch between them if you want to try something different.
Lots of good devs, lots of good ROMs. Try them all.
Quantum has been very stable for me. I like the 'stock' and functional feel of Quantum (and Nebula). Can't go wrong with either of them.
Scored 1188/2697 using SmartBench.
thanks to DEVs for all the good ROMs.

I'll give a vote for my rom. Its a simple dk28 based rom. I just stripped a bunch of garbage from it, added a couple apps (that will probably eventually go away), added my aosp dvm, and changed from tw to a lighter launcher zeam.
Its not themed as themes can be heavy and slow, and introduce bugs. Try it. I can promise you it runs as fast if not faster than any of the main ones out there.

A backup of your files plus a flashing of a new ROM takes about 15 mins max. That's just to get a feel of the ROM and it's functions. So just flash them both, or even more and decide what YOU like.
If you want to test out the battery life, well that will take using the ROM for a few days. No one can truly tell you the difference in battery life because we all use our phones so differently.
I will say this tho: I've used both , and was a diehard TW ROM fan but then I used Trigger. I LOVE Trigger. But it's mostly because of the themeing and because of how involved the dev is in his own ROMs thread with answering questions and taking the users advice, requests, and opinions.
But again, it's really up to what YOU like. Don't listen to dumb quadrant scores and such and others battery opinions. Try them out and see. Both are great ROMS with their own pluses and minuses

Hello eminembdg, I have been a loyal fan of teamwhiskey and their rims. However, I am about to try triger out this weekend. No need to disable voodoo if you're flashing from the red recovery. It was an issue with the original voodoo kernels (JAC's) and the ulf ones, but not anymore (in my experience, at least). I was also a TW fan until I tried out Trigger a month or so ago. Haven't changed since.
OP, gonna have to agree with the others. It's your phone, your usage. Try each one out and stick with whichever one you like best. They're both great rom's though.

As long as your rom is currently running voodoo then just as the post above mine stated, no you do not have to disable voodoo.
Hold down power button, click recovery, and if it takes you to a red recovery then you can just flash away like normal.
BTW, Trigger just updated to 2.8.1 today with a nice memory tweak and a couple other small tweaks. GREAT ROM
Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate your responses. Will do just as advised. Thank you.
I havent used trigger so I cant comment on it, but Ive been a huge TW fan since Nero 4. Stayed with it and I'm still super stoked about the look and the performance.

Bionix didnt have those issues for me so i went back im trying to find a problem to send me back to trigger but i havent found one yet im about to test battery trigger had a great battery life for me with overstock 1.5. when i checked the system slept pretty well. it would be at 1% over night while charging. time to test bionix see if it compares thats it
Can't download Trigger 2.8.1
Hi everyone,
I am totally new to modifying phones but I am quite computer literate. I like the Vibrant alot but obviously the original software does not perform too well. I have tried to download the Trigger 2.8.1 ROM via the link in the developers section but I get nothing more than a blank page staring at me. Am I doing something wrong? What's up guys. I flashed some roms a few months ago and kinda just stuck with Team Whiskeys Bionix V 1.3.1. It was snappy and had great battery life but after time it seems to have slowed down. I flashed it probably 5-6 months ago. Now its not quite as quick as it once was...kinda seems a little buggy.
So I'm looking to flash a new rom. I'm looking for something that is stable and quick and wont be a bunch of trouble flashing over bionix 1.3.1. Im also running the Overstock kernel if that makes any difference. Let me know things I'll need to avoid if I don't want to brick my phone and what you guys think.

.....anyways GoodVibe having Overstock don't matter cuz it will get replaced after you flash your new ROM with whatever kernel that ROM comes with but ,since you're moving from Bionix, make sure you disable Voodoo. Try the Bali 1.8.8 kernel if you end up flashing a Froyo ROM that supports it (good battery life). Your gonna have a little more work to do if you go to a GB ROM.
I decided I'm gonna keep Bionix 1.3.1 on my daily Vibrant since I don't have any issues with it and when I get more time try others on my spare Vibrant. If Bionix feels a lil laggy try going to recovery and wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions and see if that helps to refresh it or you could always re-flash it to get it fresh again, but I'm pretty sure your itching to try something new. Luck homie.

Thanks mrrob...that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I've been out of the loop for a little bit and I don't feel like reading through 25 threads to figure out what rom bugs out when flashed over whatever kernel or vice versa. And I also don't know what roms are stable and user friendly and what are just nuts. I tried TW frost when it first came out and that wrecked my phone. So I flashed back to jfd and then bionix and quit flashing for a while. Too much risk for me I guess.
Its funny...there are so many roms now. I remember just a few months ago cm7 was new for vibrant and the only other real decent roms were trigger, bionix, and azura I think. Just a few and that was it.
Thanks for the info guys. I have a new TW link to check out but most likely I'll fix permissions and dalvik and if all else fails just reflash bionix 1.3.1.

Awesome Rom without a doubt, been running since it came out. Usually Jump Around Trying them all out. Happy Here!!! Keep up the Good Work!!!
I almost started a thread like this last week, because I've used a lot of GB roms, ever since they started leaking. CleanGB is easily the best one out there. Everything about my phone always works now. That's a nice feature to have in a ROM. Unless the Epic is your second phone, or you don't do anything important ever, reliability should always come first. CleanGB is what the Epic should have been from the manufacturer.
Everything that should be there, without anything that shouldn't.
Super reliable - everything works.
Great battery life.
Nice and fast, with no slow downs for me.
A clean, subtle, and improved theme.
What more could you ask for?
Yea.. I just installed this ROM and love it so far..
I'm looking to install JUST the 10lock mod that's compatible with this ROM..
do anyone have a link for it??
all the ones I see are themed.. I don't really want to theme anything.. I just want the mod..
Please help if you can..
Thanks,
This is the first ROM I installed. I resisted b/c I don't want another time sink. But Toadlife is right. CleanGB is for people who just want their phone to work.
I realized today that I LIKE my phone. Before, I was really disapointed with it.

Ditto....I recently rooted and went with CleanGB as my first non-stock ROM. I'm seeing noticeable battery improvements and good quandrant stats. I'm quite pleased.
Thanks for the gtalk video link....I'll be doing the same.
So, who knows how to mod the boot animation on the CleanGB ROM?

How is the Battery compared to Stock Gingerbead? Ive Tried dozens of Roms but ended up back on stock and since ive gone back my battery last twice as long
This ROM is great, I have 2 people in my family with Epic 4G's and they wanted a good stable phone, so I installed this ROM for them and they have had no complaints. Awesome work toadlife!

have it running on the 3 epics in my household and we love this rom. great battery buttery smooth and quick.
Have shied away from custom ROMs due to issues introduced and been on rooted stock but this sounds like it's worth giving a shot. So far so good with everything working.
My favorite rom for sure! Stable, fast, and great battery!
put this on my phone last night and it fixed all of the issues i was having from the other 2 roms i was having and the data was running so much faster.
think this is the only rom i'll be running from here on out
Ok so I know every one has a different reason for why they like a certain rom.
We have great devs here I have tried the following
Legendary
Acs
Clean Gb
All of them rock and are all different as they are similar.
If you have tried more than one tell me why you stuck with it over the others.
I know the hardcore ACs and Legendary ppl will vote for theirs but only chime in if you have tried more than one. even if the other is not on my list..
Maybe this discussion will help me choose and maybe help other also.
I personally like the "close to stock" roms...don't get me wrong I've done my fair share of flashing to the "extreme" but there doesn't seem to be many headaches with the "close to stock roms" ....just my ¢2

stepped out for a while and back in
I stepped out for a while and am trying to update my phone. I am so out I do not know how active the forum has been . This is exactly the information I am looking for and am still going to try to dig up . I hope that there is such a thread and that is why this did not take. . .or maybe that the forums are so bustling that there are no less than productive awesomeness going on behind the curtains. . .or hopefully because of the holiday or something because it would be a shame if such a useful thread died a lonely death because there was no evaluating releases thread.
Have no idea. . .just hoping it is as easy to find as the OP intended . . .if not i hope I come back after I was forced to find this info on my own.
I would love some non loyalist (or even loyalists to some extent but not flooding) thread like this.
Thanks OP for at least trying.
Edit: Ok . . .so maybe I was a bit premature in my . . . . .rant. Sorry if this is the case.
I ran Legendary 4.0.1 since it was released and found it to lack nothing. I just switched to ACS 5.1 because the list of mods fit more with my preferences as well as I like the theme better.
Running legendary rom since v3 or so. Why? cause everything just seems to work.
For the theme, I flashed ics v1 on top of legendary rc1 and everything seems to work ok.
It's tough to find a rom with ACS/Legendary features that uses a no-theme approach like the clean GB rom. I'm on Legendary pre-RC because of the theming... and yes, I understand a different one can be flashed on top of it, but this seems to cause more problems than not from experience.
Anyone here remember Energy roms from the WM days? The cook offered them in no less than 6-10 flavors at a time with different kernel builds, homescreen utilities, themes, etc. Is this the only way to please both the "stock look high performance" and "themeed complete rom" crowds?
Not sure if you call this an EI22 Rom but çm7 is rocking my phone as we speak. I also liked starsky rom very reliable and great performance. CPK's Urban Tom is great yet there seems to be A ram leak which cause freezing. Not sure of the cause though, not blaming cpk or the IAP kernel though w/o proof.

personally i use ICS 5.5 and CM7 because With the devs for ACS i know im in good hands. If a bug arises they fix it almost immediately. As for why i use CM7 thats not even a question IMO. It is the fastest rom you can put on this phone, and the only reason i have a backup rom is for when I need to use things that CM7 cant do simply because they havent been added yet (the number is getting smaller quickly.). I also would recommend trying out CompKids rom because it is a work of art. He tends to not update as much as a lot of the other roms but thats simply because there are a lot of other projects he is working on. But whats great about it is that it has tweaks and code that no other roms have. If you really want a stock feel though i think its safe to stick with Legendary Rom or even just Clean GB. Ive tryed both and though they lacked the theme customization I wanted they were incredibly stable and fast.
I was running Legendary Rom since switching from ACS Frozen Froyo rom. For some reason, the last two versions of Legendary did not agree with my Epic as there was a significant rotation lag. I switched over to ACS ICS for that reason, found that it resolved my rotation lag issue, liked the theme but most importantly all the functions I need to work work with ICS. CM7 still does not have WiMax working, which I use from time to time so it won't be flashed until then (run CM7 on my Nook Color).
Any godam rom that has the drop down drawer drop butter smooth is fine with me. Otherwise Pos.

Energy was as best as you got on WM. I liked the choices you had as far as the UI. But nothing beats Android OS in my mind.
I'm running SleeperROM for its stability and excellent battery life. It's a little bland as far as looks go, but I will sacrifice looks for performance. But I have put the nebula theme over it, and laid down Roboto font. This thing is a beast!

Clean GB or ck23 UrBan Precision X
Clean GB is great stable and close to stock ROM ... ck23 UrBan is great if you like some cool theming on your ROM
I loaded the legendary rom which was very stable but very stock looking. I enjoy having something a little different. I am now running ACS ICSv5.1 with the honeycomb fusion theme. I love it!

So far using stock OTA EI22 is the worst smart phone experience I've ever had. Did they even test this before releasing it?
As for the roms I usually flash... I like roms that is closet to stock as possible due to liking the stock widgets and stock apps. The only stock app that annoys me is nascar, sprint football, hd games store, Asphalt 5, and Telenav.
I'll probably be switching over to CM once all the bugs are squished, and I'll end up buying launcher pro plus for the widgets (I've heard they're really high quality).
EI22 is likely the last major update for our phones, and anything other than bug fixes is out of the question. If we are lucky, we'll get an official bug fix to EI22.

I'm waiting for the freezing issue to get ironed out before I can go back to Urban. I really want to!
