DI18 2.1 unrooted > DK28 2.2 rooted - Epic 4G General

I've been playing around with this phone a lot since I got it. Today, I flashed back to DI18 and left it unrooted and found myself astonished at how much better the overall performance is.
DK28 is garbage.
If this is old news, I apologize... I just got this phone a week ago.

huh? i've only had my phone since tuesday, i haven't rooted it as of yet... but i wanted to see what that froyo is all about.

Don't do it. It's fun to play with, but like the OP said, if you want something that works reliably and well, stay stock.

Bonsai dk28 works great for me, but to each his own.

I have nothing against people who experiment with different baked ROMs on their phones--after all, where would we be without 'em?--but the performance of stock 2.1 on my Epic was already solid enough that I only really felt I needed to root for a few specific apps. I think any flashing I was going to do was always going to wait until official 2.2 was out and more development is done. I am jonesing for the new features and hopefully speed but am patient.

Agree bonsai is fantastic, no bugs what so ever and very clean and fast. Way better then 2.1 stock battery life ia about the same.
i wont go back to d118, i will miss hulu and, humans vs, aliens and andy 83 those apps only work on 2.2 and my phone has been running fantastic and way better then d118.
GPS works better!
Wifi Works perfect!
Orientation switch is fast!!
And what ever other bugs people are having im having 0

I'm running stock DK28 and it works absolutely flawless, dunno why so many have issues, I have none

I agree with the OP. I was running Nebula 1.0.7 and things were smooth for me but I went back to stock and outside of the progs that require 2.2, things are solid at least for me. Now I'm running Syndicate with Xtreme kernel and I'm loving it until we get the official Froyo

I want to go back to 2.1, but the ONLY thing that stops me is that I NEED GPS.
GPS on 2.1 is poop. I would have a hard time finding my peepee if it weren't for GPS.

I just did the exact same thing!
Running Nebula, was getting weird issues, so I went back to Syndicate with Xtreme kernel v1.2.
Ahh, everything is so snappy. I'll stick with this for a while.

It sounds like most of the people who are noticing problems are using nebula. You guys should give bonsai a try.

Lolol! I have been saying exactly this for as long as I remember. Froyo is freaking jerky. The animation transitions are not smooth.

Flashing to Midnight ROM 3.2 is the best thing I ever did.
I love my Epic 4G…I loved it with Eclair, and I am now using midNIGHT 3.2 BYOR and I love it. It’s benchmark scores are twice as fast as Eclair, and you can tell how fast and snappy the phone is. Here is a list of the things I like best that Froyo was needed for.
1. Chrome to Phone – Huge time saver and way more useful than I thought it was going to be, and I thought it would be useful, lol
2. Flash 10.1
3. The apps that needed Froyo for enhancement… Gmail, Youtube, Winamp (there is a station I like on Shoutcast and Winamp required Froyo for Shoutcast)
4. Google Docs – being able to edit Google Docs on the go. The reason I wanted a phone with a keyboard was for doing long emails and editing documents and spreadsheets. The on-screen keyboard is OK, but takes up a lot if real estate.
5. Moving apps to the SD Card – I am an app junkie and I need the space, lol
There are more things, but those are the most important to me. It is was like I got a new phone for a second time. Some of the other things I think that help make the phone better that are not Froyo “items” are the Gingerbread Keyboard (really, really good, better than iOS in my opinion), ASOP Lock Screen, and the EXT4 file system.
I still liked the phone when it had Eclair, and I wouldn’t go back and buy a different phone (and I like it on Froyo even better), it is nice hardware, awesome 5-row keyboard, and it’s AMOLED screen rocks and everyone who see’s it immediately compares it to their own back lit LCD screens, and develops a serious case of envy, lol. I am old enough to know that companies will be companies and will always make and break promises(Apple customers have to put up with a company that said their alarm was fixed in November to have it happen again in January and tells them they are holding their phone wrong). It would be nice if they always kept their promises, but they can’t. If companies were 100% honest, no one would buy their products just like if politicians were 100% honest, no one would vote for them. It would be nice to think we still would, but if we would….wouldn’t there already be 100% honest companies and politicians, lol

Been running TrulyEpic 1.5 and quite pleased with the performance, features, battery-life, etc. I really really like that it now boots in < 30 seconds. (I swap batteries instead of charging, so quick boot times are especially nice).
2.1 Eclair simply unusable because of the Calendar and Bluetooth Voice Search bugs.
But beyond that you're just wrong on performance in Eclair vs Froyo.

Vibrant Satisfaction Poll

So there are a lot of people complaining about their phones, but I'm trying to get a quantitative sense of how people feel.
While I agree there are areas that need to be improved (GPS is about the only one for me), I'm pretty satisfied overall.
Note:
Third option should read "Somewhat satisfied - have multiple issues or complaints" rather than "multiply".
Rooted, Removed Bloat, Better Rom, Better Baseband and I'm set.
Rather happy now.
rooted, bloat removed, eugene's rom, I'm happy. I would recommend the phone to family and friends.
PS.....where is the poll?
Updated with poll.
I love my Galaxy S Vibrant, the only thing I hate about it is the GPS and compass, hopefully a update will fix these issues.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I'am really happy with the vibrant, i switch phone like 4-6 months once, and this phone, really stand out from what i had used for past 3 years.
I'm happy with the phone. Way better than the G1 and it'll last me until it dies. The next phone I will be getting is a quad-core processor phone. ;p
Gps is no long issue after applying fix. I use nav all the time now. Screen is still amazing to me, I watch alot of movies on it. Never been happier with a phone. Cant wait till 2.2 comes out to make a great thing better.

This replaced my nexus and have no regrets whats so ever.
Only complaint is the compass but from what ive read its fixed in leaked rom so im sure its going to be fine in next update.
No issues with GPS since I have the gps fix with stock rom.
Once I got rid of TouchWiz the only complaint I have is the lack of ASOP but I am not a coder so there is nothing I can do about that but wait.

Which baseband would that be? Just curious to see if I can improve mine, its choppy at times.
Now I use the lag fix & did the Gps lbstest thing but seems no big improvement, any pointers?
One more thing, why does the pole not show in the XDA app??
Stunner phone indeed!!

Fully satisfied after flasing Bionix 1.3 ROM with voodoo lagfix and battery status indicator mod. The phone cannot be more perfect for 2.1. It will go to the next level if satsifaction when 2.2 comes out (mainly flash 10.1 support).
Can someone just post breifly what ASOP is?
lightyears faster than my old wm6.5 omnia II, Android just obliterates wm. GPS works alright, haven't tried compass. On my Omnia II, i had a new custom rom every couple weeks, but without recovery mode on my Vibrant, i'm a little reluctant to install one...
Hi all, newcomer here, thought i should finally say hi.
Love my vibrant. Its my first andriod phone, had a lot to learn to get up to speed, but I'm getting there. I have been trolling these forums for about a month or so, flashing this and that, trying to figure out adb, and working out odin. I was one of those anti-smartphone people, now I can barely put this down. I'm currently running bionix 1.3 with kingklicks kernel, and a few other mods. My thanks to the devs out there working on these roms and mods, keep up the great work!

I like my Vibrant. I am somewhat disappointed with the battery life. I really rely on GPS so I'm very unhappy in that regard. My overall rating is 3 out of a possible 5 based on what I expect from my phone.

I really do love this phone. It's elegant, lightweight, gives me more battery life than my G1 ever did, and does nearly everything I want it to do. I'd be completely satisfied if it would get some bug fixes so it could do everything I want it to do, but that's not really the phone's fault.
Love the phone...I just want up dates
I am really happy. I have a couple of complaints, though. Nothing major.
Rooted >> Removed bloatware >> Leaked update = Me happy.
I will be 99.9% happy when Froyo comes. But I can wait.

I voted for very satfisfied but the truth is I'm pretty much completely satisfied. The battery could be a little bit better, but for the amount I use my phone I think I'd have battery issues with any similarly spec'd phone.
Has it's quirks here and there but seriously what phone doesn't? Nothing to make me change phones or anything like that. Very satisfied and content with my Vibrant.

No more 2.1 rom developing?

What happened to all the 2.1 fun? A leaked 2.2 drops and all of a sudden 2.1 dev'ing is a ghost town. 2.2 leak was ok, but I prefer the flawlessness of my TW2.1 set-up.
I take it everyone moved on?
2.2 brings alot of benefits to the platform as a whole, as a result alot of developers were actually waiting on 2.2 before starting development (ie. Cyanogen - however not sure where it is heading at the moment). There are some developers who started on 2.1 just because it was all we had at that time, but now that 2.2 is available there's no point in going back.
Why not? 2.1 is stable as hell. Until CM is released I see myself staying on tw final r1.

And...I know it is all about moving forward, but I didn't really see much difference on a 2.2 rom. Our devs are so good, no discernible difference was to be had (for me).

I know it sounds silly, but I really like the drag tool when you are editing a line of text with the little drop down.
Like you said, 2.1 was already, "flawlessness" and "stable as hell" why mess with something thats not broken and room for little improvement as opposed to 2.2, where the development ceiling is much higher
Yea...I like seeing progress and will update to 2.2 once things get a bit more stable (admittedly I haven't used the new features--I'm pretty boring). I just feel like sometimes everyone looks to the future asap and once a dead horse is almost beaten no more support goes that way and those who like to play it safe only have a few flavors left.
I just really like 2.1--and would want a 2.2+ that makes me smile just as wide.
there are several 2.2 roms that are stable. i have tried them all and i am currently running obsidian v5 for now. having flash and all of the other goodies makes it worth it.

there are plenty of solid 2.1 roms. when tw has a bionix final and a fusion that's either final or close, plus aosp like roms, plus all of eugene's roms, 2.1 has been done thoroughly.
i'd recommend you try one of the good, new 2.2s like axura, obsidian, or macnut and see if it changes your mind. it's not just new features of 2.2, i went from 1.2ghz oc/uv core kernel with fusion to stock kernel obsidian, both with no lagfixes, and was benchmarking about exactly the same, which i found pretty impressive.

+1. I love that too.
And yeah, honestly, even though it's a "leak", 2.2 has made it to the stable levels of 2.1 ROMS. I've been using Axura since it came out, and even the first build was just great, and now everything seems to have worked itself out, I literally don't have one feature I cannot do on this ROM, everything works. And if for some reason something doesn't, it must not be that important to me because I haven't noticed haha.

Eh, the term "leak" scares people off, including myself actually. But once I saw so many positive comments about Axura that's when I finally took the dive. I know people seem to love Obsidian, but everytime I enter that forum it's just posts upon posts of people not only having problems, but with bricked phones/having to odin to stock/ etc etc. I highly recommend Axura, I've never used Odin to recover or get anything working. It's real easy, and even more rewarding.
PS This isn't a post to spark defense for Obsidian, obviously it works for some people, but just my observations.
kinda goes without saying, but: you are always free to carry on the 2.1 development torch if you think it's a worthwhile venture.

I agree...at this stage 2.1 baked firmwares are stable as hell...which is also why there's little reason to bother tweaking them further.
It's really about resource and time management I think. We're weeks away from 2.1 being a distant memory officially, so there's little reason to play in that pond anymore.
To beat the dead horse even more:
Not much more can be done with Eclair.... and frankly, now that there is a froyo (with JIT compiler) why would you want to keep wasting time on it? I understand (and agree) that the Eclair builds we have are incredible ones... and there is of course things that could make them better, but why bother?
Froyo is a daily driver, incredibly stable and it brings a lot more to the table. Any developer is going to want to play with the new toy, and this is it. When there is another leak or OTA, THAT will be the new toy. And THIS leak did come from a T Mobile employee (who will continue to go unknown for his services) so there is no real worry issue here.
People on XDA tend to want this too... I flashed my phone probably 7 times in the past 2 weeks. Not because I needed to, but because there was a new rom or a new update... always going to want the latest/greatest.
Also, I am positive my froyo is faster than any eclair you have, it has very good battery life and it can do more....
REALLY wanting to see Axura 2.0.5 available....

How many of you are happy with EB13?

I updated my Epic on the day EB13 was released. I used the update.zip using the stock recovery on my stock/rooted DI18 (no data/cache wipes before updating) which kept all my data and apps intact. After the update, the only problems I had were the one related to the camera (video lag in low light and still camera FC in sport mode), but after the kernel fix was introduced (thanks to mkasick) I have had absolutely ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, NO problems. Granted I am still using basically the stock EB13 rooted only with Launcher Pro, but everything has worked as it should (GPS, SMS, MMS, video recording, camera, music player, SD card, etc.). The only issue for me is probably the checkerboarding on the stock browser which is not a big deal for me anyways.
How many of you have been happy with your EB13 upgrade experience?

As for checker-boarding on the browser..coming from a TP2..I hardly call that checkerboarding lol

I flashed eb13 with the samsung exe and immediately got root access and changed over to deodexed/ext4 and with the lastest genocide kernel .... close to perfect ... with the overclock and pretty heavy use battery life is darn good, amazingly. My battery app estimates 11.5 hrs @ 58%. I'm constantly picking the thing up and using it today. All apps run fine and now the browser is substantially faster than the wifes laptop! Was just on the gamestop site with a flash game review playing along side a bunch of animated adds and it still played great. 1375/3020 smartbench. This is all the "phone" I'll need for some time to come! Since the camera fix in genocide kernel, all regrets are gone. Plus, if you love video media like I do, you MUST have 2.2 as the video decoding and audio decoding are sgnificantly improved. 2.1 would stutter a bit with very high bit rate stuff. 2.2 makes the best quality video play FLAWLESSLY. Never a dropped frame. Even @2mbit/sec. Watching a movie on my phone is nearly as pleasing as my well calibrated big screen.

Not me. Its seems much better at first. But when you start getting random fc's here and there it tells you somethings wrong. In all honestly I think 2.1 eclair ran this phone with ease like a current machine would run winxp. No problems and everythings snappy. Works the way its suppose to. Throw win7 in and now youve complicated things by adding in bore instruction sets that might conflict. Not to say that it isn't gonna work well but we can clearly see sprint was full of **** when they said they were thoroughly testing for bugs. Build the is from the ground up with gingerbread. Until that happens were gonna keep getting updates that fix **** instead of updates that turn our epics for the better. Its what this hardware deserves. Next year when tegra 2's are mainstream phonemena hummingbird will be the mid level tier. Even with 2.2 I still think this hardware has more to give.
My 2 cents.

That's impossible in all honesty. With the way people were crying about the 2.2 update to build something from kernel up and redo it people would be crying "gingerbread is taking too long" screw Samsung, and Sprint...
i odin'd back to DI18 a day before EB13 and only restored contacts.
once EB13 dropped, i wiped everything 3 times w/ clockwork, upgraded via the update.zip method. Then did the 1 click root, and manually re-installed all my apps etc.
The one thing that really kills the 'new' froyo for me is the bluetooth problems still being present like on DK28. I got so damn irritated w/ DK28's bluetooth problems that i actually went back to 2.1
Now that i'm using EN13, I'm still pretty honked off but it hasn't irritated me enough yet to go back to eclair.. depends on how flaky the bluetooth becomes.
So far, I'm running stock EB13, 1 click root, genocide kernel installed yesterday) and gonna gauge battery life.
I'm really wanting to try out the MIUI and/or cyanogenmod once they're a little less buggy.. the devs are making great progress, but i need a fairly non-buggy phone for work so that's why i'm waiting (not complaining.. i experiment on the weekends w/ ROMs and such)

Who has tried 2.2 and went back to 2.1?

Just curious. I was thinking of going back. My phone used to fly on 2.1. They only thing I did not like was lack of flash player capability.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
Until we got the open source kernel with BLN, I was strongly thinking about downgraded (and rather regretted upgrading so soon), due to the loss of BLN. Now, my phone is at least as fast, has all the same features (lacked GPS then, and still do now ), but also all the new Froyo features like push notifications (push = infinitely better for battery!).
I went back to stock 2.1 (EA28) after using 2.2 with superclean 2.9.2. So far, I'm impressed with 2.1, check out the improvements:
1) Browser scrolling is much smoother!
2) Battery life is great without doing bunch of hacks each boot!
3) POP email client actually works correctly and doesn't snap to top of list constantly!
4) SMS looks much better!
5) GPS locks faster than any 2.2 ROM!
Negatives of 2.1:
1) slightly more UI lag sometimes... but not bad
2) Google maps doesnt fully 3D rotate
Overall, 2.1 is better. I'm waiting for official 2.2, hopefully it will address the bugs in the leak. Perhaps it will never come, and then we'll all never buy Samsung again.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I made a post about this yesterday. Every time I mention 2.1 performs better overall than Froyo i get attacked my developers. Bottom line is that Battery/Performance just aren't as good for me on 2.2 as they were on 2.1. Also apparently memory management is supposed to be better but tasker constantly reports low memory and when I clear the RAM it hardly goes down until reboot.
Im back on 2.1. I got sick of constantly battling wakelocks. I will flash Nameless when v4 drops though.
If i go back, I will Root, CWR, and debloat, debing myself. I will also look into an AOSP voodoo kernel for voodoo lagfix and sound. I am considering trying this out. If I do I will let y'all know if the kernel and voodoo like 2.1, i know the rest of the stuff works as i have done it before, and now that we have a fixed CWR, even better, plus i really like the feeds and updates widget.

Being the noob I am,, so far I've only personally experienced the 2.1 stock verizon bloat load and now SC 2.9 with voodoo. All I can say is WOW,, there is no comparison between the performance of those two,, the SC absolutely blows away the old stock 2.1. So eh no, I dont see ever going back to 2.1.
Now that being said, I've never tried a 'debloated' 2.1 version of a load of any kind, maybe running voodoo filesystem structure,, so maybe that would be even faster,, idk.. But at this point I am so happy with it that I really I dont want to mess with it
I've been back and forth and ultimately I would have to say that a ComaVolted SC 2.9.2 is a lot better than the eclair version of the phone. I get killer battery life and my phone actually works the way it was meant to. I don't think I will be going back to 2.1.
My battery life has increased by a great fold ever since I switched to 2.2. Everything else has far surpassed 2.1 from my experince.
The only reason I would ever go back to 2.1 was if I had to return my phone.

I have reverted back to D101 so many times I lost count. In my opinion there are many things both benifitial and negative for both 2.2 and 2.1. Personally I go for stability, but I have finally got a stable 2.2. And I actually like TW.
D101 is still a good build in my opinion. I would still be perfectly happy running it, but theming and kernels are much more fun.

When I first started all the customization, I was very hesitant. I ran just the Stock EB01 debing/debloat for a while and had zero issues, with the exception that the vibration length changed from 2.1 to 2.2.
Just use Odin 1.3 and follow the instructions if you haven't done it before.
Edit: I am running the Superclean 2.9.2 myself with all the TW aspects added back in, even the live wallpapers. I like the stock look and feel, but I also like many of the Superclean features.
Personally I would hold off flashing anything new until NAMELESS drops. It should be within the next few days and may finally give us the 100% froyo experience we have been waiting for along with edify scripting and the new cwm.
Until then im going to stick with my personally debloated, debinged, detouchwiz-ed , EA28.

Well, glad thats just you, personally.
By the way,
EC10 is about 70% binary identical to EB01.

My problem with change

I hate change. So, since I have worked on specializing NY CM7 for just me, then ics coming out, makes it hard for me to want to go to it. I love my setup as well as my performance here on gingerbread. But, I have pulled myself to download oICSv41 as well as the GLaDOS kernel. Is there any big bugs with v41 I should know about..? As well as with GLaDOS. I know of the reboot problem, but it sounds like its just people using set CPU. And if I do have problems ill just go to mathkids trusty matr1x kernel that I've been using since 6.0. Although none of you will provably care I just felt the need to say this, thanks guys
PS. If you have problems like this, post then below, weather it be with phones or not.

I haven't had any issue at all except for slight launcher lag.

I hate change too... I've flashed and tried just about every ICS rom and kernel out right now, but still find myself nandroiding back to my latest GB MIUI setup. Not once did I get excited about ICS coming out... honestly I don't see what all the hype is about. It took a year to get GB to what it is today, so I wonder what ICS will be a year from now.

I feel exactly the same way. I absolutely LOVE my gingerbread the way it is. And about five minutes ago, I flashed back to good ole gb. I wont flash ics until an official ota cones out.

Idk bout you guys but I'm not afraid to try new things, have fun living in the past cavemen lol. But things about ics right know are all known issues that Google already knows about. Bad battery life due to android os keeping the phone awake, home screen lag which gets resolved by using either kernels you mentioned and depending on the from you settle on, incoming mms doesn't work but outgoing does. Other than that, its bad ass and something new.

I tried ICS for a day, straight back to GB for me, it seemed like a step backward for me coming from MV roms.
Matr1x v13.0
(Oc 1300/200 smartassv2 and live Oc 105% raise voltages by 15)
Nexusbeam 4.0.1
Perfect combination. Everything works, no complaints.
Quadrant scores of 3434, which is respectable.
ICS is the way to go!
Hope this helps you decide.
Even though I finally have a decently running ICS ROM.. I'm still disappointed by ICS. I think a lot of it had to do with the very large overhyping it got.. I mean we all thought our phones would be ****ting rainbows and unicorns, and didn't, not even close. It's a cosmetic re-design with annoying hardware accelerated web browsing..
The accelerated web browsing is so poorly implemented one of the first features I'd love to see in a ROM is the ability to turn it off. I'm much rather put up with the occasional "hitching" while scrolling instead of the "Scroll, scroll scroll, wait for it to render and make the blur go away" craptacular experience it is now.

And that's the story with anything new that comes out. Everyone hears about something new and runs with it and praises it to the heavens and back without knowing anything about it (true hands on experience). Its always best to form your own opinion on things and not let hype or anything like that to get in your way of judging something.

It's weird because the render time is insanely long on the OTA. But, when I had installed Kwiboo's or CM9, the browser experience was amazing!

I dunno, i look at GB now and it look ugly and clunky. Stock ICS is running just as fast (or faster) and stable as stock GB did for me. I don't even have the desire to play with custom ROMs and kernels anymore, ICS is so close to perfection for my needs. Unless CM9 offers something really great, I'm sticking with stock ICS.
