I just went through a second Nexus S and the GPS does NOT lock when I am in a car. When it does lock, the accuracy is so poor that navigation is completely impossible. I have compared the GPS with my Xperia X10 and a HTC magic and both phones have a better accuracy than the Nexus S. What is going on? Please help I don't know what to do.
I am on Wind Mobile in Canada.
turn wifi on maybe will help. but ive noticed its just a week radio all around. from wifi, 4g, 3g, gps.... all week. i have a bunch of evos and droidxs to compare with...
I know this might be a stupid question, but do you have the tower assisted gps or the actual gps on?
Try other gps software like sygic or navigon

Yes I do. I have it on. The thing is when I am not moving it locks on. When I start to move in a vehicle, it will frequently lose the lock on gps. I've tried using GPS software.
Is the phone under the windshield? remember GPS requires inline sight to a satellite, so if the metal roof of your car is blocking the signal it will fade in/out.

do you guys think it might be a hardware problem in some phone series ?

I've tried everything. I tried walking and that doesn't work. This is ridiculous like I said I've compared it to my xperia and htc magic and both of them lock on in all situations. My accuraccy goes to only 30 feet. With HTC magic I get accuracy of ~6 feet. Is this normal or is this a defect?
Try the app GPS status from the market. Press menu go to tools and agps. There is an option to download latest GPS information. That should help.

i use new 1.2.4 free one and there's not tools section in menu
i think it must be "menu -> clear AGPS" and then "Update AGPS"

lool sorry , i was talking about GPS test , i do clearing also downloading by that
but i alway use "GPS Status & Toolbox" for fixing beacause i thinks it's the fastest
i already did the same mistake about downloading the updates with this too
though my GPS now is much better than before that fixes to 5 or more sats in under 0.5 minutes
do you think it needs to use GPS Status to update again ?
thank you...
fantastic result after 30-45 seconds in an open area :
amount of fixed sats and accuracy are amazing now for me
but after wiping the rom it seems must do the procedure again...

ns4g still screwed on gps
I have tried everything from the apps, to roms, to kernels, to *#*#gpsclrx#*#* to "fixes" (flashable CWM zips, like h3llstorm), to the official OTA, and they never work for me. location based services like checking in work fine, but anything to do with navigation while being in the car, never works. it drops almost methodically, says searching for gps, has me in neighborhoods beside highways when im on highways, and it is just generally making me very sad. i consider myself an android power user, and have never been stumped like this before. is it my actual phone? the model of phone? samsung? sprint? am i just crazy?
i had the exact same issue after samsung fixed my broken power button. The phone would rarely get a gps lock and if it did the lock lasted for about a second. Navigation was impossible. I called them and they had me ship it in. They repaired it and i should be getting it back by monday. I will report back on if it is fixed.
Well... Let us know if they will fix the compass too ;-)

I seached and came up with this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912777
and this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970
If you are having problems with the phone there are couple of fixes that will work. One Software, if you have KB1, KA7 modem along with a new custom rom you may have the software fix. The Axura and Jellette Roms seem to work better for me GPS-wise, but that just may be my phone. You may want to experiment and try out. The other is the mechanical... Look at KWKSLVR's post on how to fix. basically there is a spring tab that is supposed to touch a flat antenna in the inner plastic back cover of the phone. That is the GPS antenna. If it is not engaging fully you get spotty reception. My fix was to bend up and place a small piece of toothpick jammed in there to keep 100% engagement. Now every time I do a test sitting inside my house I get 10-15 in view and within 20 sec 5-7 lock. I just checked I am 6/11 and 10m error factor. This is not rocket surgery
Follow this and follow the fixes in the stickies and you will get good results.
Hi
I want to share my Experience about GPS issues, I bought T-Mobile vibrant from Houston through craigs list. I brought that phone to Pakistan and unlcoked it. Every thing used to work fine except the GPS which rarely saw any Satellite and in case if it saw few, connected only once or twice in couple of months.
I tried hardware fix - Not Worked
Tried Samsung GPS Resore - Not Worked
Tried LBS Test - Both Cold Start - HOT - Did not worked
I tried GPS Booster Trial - Completely messed up GPS (No satellite viewable) infact my gps.conf got messed up
I did few manual tweakings
created new gps.conf as under
NTP_SERVER=asia.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=h__p://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=h__p://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin

In LBStestmode
changed SUPL_server to supl.nokia.com on port 7275
changed Operation mode in application settings to MS Based
As a result my GPS started again with some improvement in lockings in 2 to 5 minutes outdoors
Finally I installed Navitel (navigation software) with Pakistan's maps, somehow out of the blue Navitel made my GPS to lock to satellite in few seconds.
Still if I use google maps it takes time to lock but with navitel I always get lock in less then a minute. Infact today I got locked on to 11 Satellites through Navitel which was simply amazing for me.
Thanks

KWKSLVR's mechanical fix is one issue, so you could do that after trying the software fixes.
There are some other software fixes look in the bible for them.
Install this patch I uploaded, it is Master's GPS fix works pretty well I am always getting 10-15 view 5-8 lock 30-45 sec. OR, Get GPS AIDS off the market
This works for some as well I have tried and done all the above, it solves most of the GPS problems
Hope that helps you
Hard to take you serious when you say you looked for a GPS fix on XDA and didn't find anything.
There are two issues with GPS on the vibrant. Hardware and Software
If you running a custom ROM then most likely your software should be fixed. The latest modems and roms include very good GPS software compared with earlier versions.
If you are seeing sats but not able to lock then most likely you do have the hardware problem. I believe someone as already included a link to this fix.
I did both fixes and my GPS went from hardly working at all to useful with locks in seconds in doors or outdoor.

Interesting.
I wonder if the issues were just with the Nexus S or all Android phones using Wimax.
(Which would then bring the question on whether some of the low 4g performance was truly the network or if it was Android itself)

the only piece of 4G improvement involved a new radio for the Nexus S. pretty sure it had nothing to do with actual Wimax in 2.3.5, just that the OTA for the NS4G included a new radio along with the 2.3.5 version upgrade.

GLONASS it's a pro GPS chipset...
just EXAMPLE:

I would really like to know the answer to this question too. Since GPS is global, I really need to educate myself about GLONASS before I test this stuff out.
However, as long as the GPS is working better then on the S II I'm happy.
Try GPS Test. Satellites with numbers over 60 = GLONASS.

I've "educated" myself about the GLONASS system now. While doing so I read about the Galileo system for EU. That seems to be something promising.
I think it's cool that Galileo provide both way communication with satellites. How cool apps could spawn from this... =)

You sure you put it in correctly sometime you have to put in ##3282## instead of ##3282# I thought that was a hard coded android thing though. It should be on all S3's heck it was on my old HTC Touch Pro 2 also and that didn't even run Android(well not officially anyway).
Try this (I used this on GNexus) and let me know if it works.
I know the dial code works, but I have T-Mobile so I don't have LTE.
*#*#4636#*#*
Click the "Device Information" tab
Scroll down to the drop down box and change it.
There is an LTE only option as well as LTE/WCDMA.
Give it a second to register. You can also click "turn off radio", wait a minute or so, it'll turn off. Click it again, wait a minute or so and it'll turn the radio back on. Usually jumps the change into effect. If you lose radio and it never comes back, switch it back to whatever you were using before.

That's funny I just started playing with the Testing menu you just posted before you posted it. I was about to post it when you beat me to it. By putting it on LTE only I think it kept my voice while giving me only LTE. I am going to have to drive around and test it and see if it ever goes to 3G or not. That might be the option. There is an widget that will take you to that menu without the code by pressing the 4G toggle on the widget. You can download it here:

none of the codes listed works...
the second one dials a number...
It would be a pretty good bet that this issue is carrier-specific. (One more example of confusion in this mashed-together forum.)
The code mentioned for T- Mobile works.

Well I got my phone listed in my signature. I think the OP is talking about Sprint only but I am sure each carrier may have a specific way to get to the phone test menu. I know that app I posted took me to it.
As far as the LTE only trick in that phone testing menu, I think it works for a while but does not survive reboot meaning you will have to reapply it. Also mine switched back to lte/cdma/evdo after a little while possibly when I lost a 4G signal completely. So I think this partially works or they are still turning on towers because I am definitely keeping 4G and getting it a lot more places then I did have it earlier today.

Edit: After making a run to the Grocery Store, I had the "LTE only" selection made from the Phone Testing Menu drop down list. I lost 4G in one area then got it back by the time I got to the grocery store. On the way back I made sure it was set to LTE/CDMA/EVDO and I got the same exact signal everywhere. So I don't believe changing the settings on that drop down on that menu do anything at all. I am guessing the phone software overrides those setting somewhere else.

Yeah it works. I played around with it a bit when I got my phone on the 21st. Was trying to see if I could force LTE somehow even though I know there's no LTE
I just got my New Nexus 7 two days ago and really wanted to try out the GPS but it is not getting any signals. I was wondering if anyone is have the same problem. I searched around Google and people say there's can work for about couple of minutes but mine does not work at all. Any suggestions on how to fix this.
Mine is working for atleast couple of minutes. Didn't tested for long. Urs is 16gb or 32gb?

After going through some threads it looked as this problem is more common in 16gb than 32gb

Mine is the 16GB version. I've tried rebooting and turning on and off the GPS but nothing has worked so far.
I've got a 16gb and the gps seems to work great so far. I also purchased a 32gb for a friend overseas and the gps on that one also worked flawlessly.

No. For 'real life' use it sucks. We've got a few threads going already. :good:
If you do a search you find that it's been discussed.
A reboot temporarily fixes the issue for me.
Mines worked great since day one. Though I disabled it to help reduce battery drain since I really don't use it on here.

It should not turn on until an app request GPS info. So if you not using an app that requires GPS out should really make a much of a difference in battery life.
But if you don't use it, then nothing lost.
I've got a 32 GB and it works for like 10 minutes max and then it stops updating my location

Apps that have GPS capability ping it when trying to find a location. Though since you need wifi on anyways to actually get said data, unless your using a map program, then you already have location via the wifi. So no need to ping on the GPS if its already being handled another way

As said, if no apps are requesting GPS, the GPS won't be used, using zero power. Wifi location is not already available, nor in any way accurate in some cases...
I had mine going for maybe 10 minutes before it stopped working. I was using navigation to take the kids to play mini golf. I had to use my S4 the rest of the way. Very aggravating

WiFi triangulation works good enough for me. It gets my location accurate all of the time. I haven't tried using GPS.
So far Mine is working incredibly fast. I used to have to wait for a minute for my 1st gen to pick it up enough to give me a lock.
This 32GB 2nd Gen had over a dozen locked in the first 10 seconds. (GPS ESSENTIALS)
I will be testing it more tomorrow since I literally have only had this thing for 3 hours now.

i had absolutely no issues with the 2013 N7 so far and i was playing ingress,
which is a gps/wifi tethered thing for 3 to 14 hours the last days (yes we had
a few events here).
the only thing i did when initially setting up the N7² is to uncheck the "yes use
this stupid new thingie to locate me everytime, everywhere with this newer and
better forgot-the-name service" whcih was the last of the 3 options in the first
run process.
the setting is userbased so anyone which gps problems might try to set a a new
user (multiuser) to the tablet and uncheck that setting to see if this is any
improvement. just an idea..
currently i am on a CM 10.2 rom which is faster as the stock was and battery
life was improved too.
So is the GPS issue SW or HW based?
