Mind blowing GPS lock speed - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

As the title says, Note has mind blowing GPS lock speed. I came from host of devices from Nokia, Acer, HTC and one dedicated GPS and Note beats them all. 2 seconds outside, 7 seconds inside the room (with windows).

Same here. All of my HTC phones had excellent GPS while my Samsung Galaxy S2 - Epic Touch was so bad that it was unusable. The Note however is on a different level. Super fast locking and dead on accurate. Used Google navigation today to find a church. Was pretty impressive.

yes, same here: the note has a comparably superb GPS capability

GLONASS it's a pro GPS chipset...
just EXAMPLE:
If regular phone (with out Glonass) finds 8-9 satellites, of them are working only 3-4.
The phone with GLONASS finds 19 satellites and 17-18 working from them.
any questions people?

Yes, Broadcom+GLONASS is the business:

I did a test with a colleague. We put my Note and his non-GLONASS phone side by side and used "GPS Status". His phone got a fix faster than my Note and both phones saw the same amount of satellites. I wanted to check if my Note finds Glonass but I can't really tell. His phone was T-mobile MyTouch. I was disappointed

I think that Note will use GLONASS only if GPS will not available.
Just like QUALCOMM chipsets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB9pXInwh3k

I would really like to know the answer to this question too. Since GPS is global, I really need to educate myself about GLONASS before I test this stuff out.
However, as long as the GPS is working better then on the S II I'm happy.

Try GPS Test. Satellites with numbers over 60 = GLONASS.

GLONASS is global too. At this moment 24 satellites working. Planned to make the active 30 satellites.

I've "educated" myself about the GLONASS system now. While doing so I read about the Galileo system for EU. That seems to be something promising.
I think it's cool that Galileo provide both way communication with satellites. How cool apps could spawn from this... =)

Not soon, and the prospects are unclear. Not for Galaxy Note.

Yeah, I love the GPS on the Note, with mine old HTC Desire and I cant even get a lock at home. Over 1Hour waiting and not a freaking lock, even locked and then lose it all the time.
With the Note, get lock within 20 sec at home and I just luvvvvvvv it.

my note 16 sattelites indoor, cousing S2 4 indoor

I tested mid-air in flight and it had GPS

Workaround to GPS problems

Hi all,
I don't know if this will help anyone but it seems to have resolved my GPS issues on the I9000 running stock JPO (with z4root and OCLF).
Prior to this workaround, my GPS was crap and I was about to give up on it. Also, it was fine when I upgraded to JPO initially and then got worse after a few days and then became totally unusable. Note that I am not on any mobile plan (just prepaid calls) so I do not have AGPS assist at all.
I saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6QnNMxuCig&feature=related which mentions that you can use GPSStatus to update the AGPS info on the I9000.
Not expecting much I tired the AGPS update and to my surprise my GPS is now working like a dream, I get locks within 10 seconds and the tracking now works! I tried tracking in a bus where I am seated near a window and it works 100% (it was raining hard as well). This did not work at all before. BTW, I used CoPilot for the tracking test.
So updating the AGPS does help and also might explain why my GPS worked after the JPO upgrade and then deteriorated over time.
Anyway I hope this help someone coz it worked for me
Please. Even orange has admitted the gps problem and agreed to exchange it for me...
There's no point doing this type of setting. A good gps should be working without too many complicated settings.
A-GPS is assisted GPS and uses the network to get better/faster fixes. Get out of the city and you'll find out your GPS is probably just as bad.
The Nexus S was delayed due to hardware problems. Once the hardware was fixed and the phone was passed through the FCC again guess what part was changed? The bluetooth, WIFI and GPS atennas.

Well if it's a hardware problem it can't be an issue with all Galaxy S phones. Mine seems to work pretty well even from the ground floor of my 2 story home.

Thats why i asked what the problem was mine seems ok .
So if its a hardware problem then its either a part like aerial so why should my aerial be ok and others not . Or it could be a bad connection on the board that would be more likely as its poor GPS not across the board on all sets .

I seached and came up with this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912777
and this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970
If you are having problems with the phone there are couple of fixes that will work. One Software, if you have KB1, KA7 modem along with a new custom rom you may have the software fix. The Axura and Jellette Roms seem to work better for me GPS-wise, but that just may be my phone. You may want to experiment and try out. The other is the mechanical... Look at KWKSLVR's post on how to fix. basically there is a spring tab that is supposed to touch a flat antenna in the inner plastic back cover of the phone. That is the GPS antenna. If it is not engaging fully you get spotty reception. My fix was to bend up and place a small piece of toothpick jammed in there to keep 100% engagement. Now every time I do a test sitting inside my house I get 10-15 in view and within 20 sec 5-7 lock. I just checked I am 6/11 and 10m error factor. This is not rocket surgery
Follow this and follow the fixes in the stickies and you will get good results.
Hi
I want to share my Experience about GPS issues, I bought T-Mobile vibrant from Houston through craigs list. I brought that phone to Pakistan and unlcoked it. Every thing used to work fine except the GPS which rarely saw any Satellite and in case if it saw few, connected only once or twice in couple of months.
I tried hardware fix - Not Worked
Tried Samsung GPS Resore - Not Worked
Tried LBS Test - Both Cold Start - HOT - Did not worked
I tried GPS Booster Trial - Completely messed up GPS (No satellite viewable) infact my gps.conf got messed up
I did few manual tweakings
created new gps.conf as under
NTP_SERVER=asia.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=h__p://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=h__p://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin

In LBStestmode
changed SUPL_server to supl.nokia.com on port 7275
changed Operation mode in application settings to MS Based
As a result my GPS started again with some improvement in lockings in 2 to 5 minutes outdoors
Finally I installed Navitel (navigation software) with Pakistan's maps, somehow out of the blue Navitel made my GPS to lock to satellite in few seconds.
Still if I use google maps it takes time to lock but with navitel I always get lock in less then a minute. Infact today I got locked on to 11 Satellites through Navitel which was simply amazing for me.
Thanks

A simple factory reset could be all you need to get it working. Had the same issue and after I did a factory reset it was working amazingly well. Good luck!

KWKSLVR's mechanical fix is one issue, so you could do that after trying the software fixes.
There are some other software fixes look in the bible for them.
Install this patch I uploaded, it is Master's GPS fix works pretty well I am always getting 10-15 view 5-8 lock 30-45 sec. OR, Get GPS AIDS off the market
This works for some as well I have tried and done all the above, it solves most of the GPS problems
Hope that helps you
Hard to take you serious when you say you looked for a GPS fix on XDA and didn't find anything.
There are two issues with GPS on the vibrant. Hardware and Software
If you running a custom ROM then most likely your software should be fixed. The latest modems and roms include very good GPS software compared with earlier versions.
If you are seeing sats but not able to lock then most likely you do have the hardware problem. I believe someone as already included a link to this fix.
I did both fixes and my GPS went from hardly working at all to useful with locks in seconds in doors or outdoor.

GLONASS support and fast GPS fix is well know...
Since it works so well, no one cares to complain ( like in SGS ) and less know.
You r right. GPS fix is fastest that i have ever seen. Way better than my garmin devices. Even on a cloudy day
GPS lock is insanely fast on this device. Samsung did a great job on this Peabody.
Barometer.
barometer can only make a difference in the altitude readings ( how high you are ) Broadcom states that the Note can use data from twice as many satellites than, let's say, GS2. And as winnie the pooh said: The more - the mucher
I can't wait to finally have good GPS again. My Captivate actually isn't too bad - for a Captivate. Having come from a Garmin iQue 3600, however, I have been very frustrated with it.

Altitude has always been an issue with GPS. Garmin came out with an aviation 3600 that sold well, but the standard GPS measuring tools are better on the horizontal plane, rather than the vertical, it will be interesting to see how this has advanced.

But seems to be everybody is happy with the Note's Gps performance anyway so....it's all good..
Gonna get my Note in January....it's about time to make new gps videos...
The ones on my sign is from my sgs's eclair times
I can confirm the incredible quick fix of the Note'GPS: the best one I ever had .
Even the sensitivity is great. I just tried now to fix with the phone inside the apartment. It took 8 seconds for a cold fix while other phones or gps system were not even able to get a fix (including my previous GS II) .
In the car it takes +/- 5 seconds for a cold fix. In the past I could start driving for sometime while waiting for the gps fix in other phones or GPS system.
I'm fully satisfied with the note gps.

Never managed to lock during flight with my Atrix. I believe due to lack of internet connection.
Perhaps the barometer fixes that...
Cool! Which application is that?
I would suggest next time to use OpenGPS. You can record the whole travel and then replay it in Google earth via KML export/email It doesn't require internet access for recording (though the display of the map will be gray)

Power? This is Chuck Norris of phones!
My understanding is that commercial GPS chipsets are restricted to locks above 500 kph (or mph) by the US gubberment. Is it perhaps the GLOSNASS support that is allowing the high speed locking ?
I found the following on another forum talking about ITAR limits that I cannot post a link too as I be a noob:
"Many GPS receivers are restricted in dynamics for military
reasons--dynamics not exceeding--
Dynamics:
Acceleration 4g (39.2 m/s^2)
Motional Jerk 20 m/s^3
Operational limits
Altitude < 18,000 m or velocity < 515 m/s
Either limit may be exceeded but not both (in non-military GPS
receivers).
These restrictions do not apply to the Space Shuttle or LEO satellites
making use of GPS signals. You can always build your own receiver
without restrictions of any kind."
my xperia ARC locked on a flight to HK, it took about 5 mins of holding it to the window but it did lock.
I read somewhere that Glonass satellites are numbered between 45 and 65. Didn't check it during this flight, will see next time what satellites are used in fix.

[Q] Note III Vs Ingress!

For those of who play ingress you will be aware of the heavy load it gives to the phone/battery.
I was wondering if any of you have tried this game yet on the note 3? How has it been?
I`m just curious really, looking forward in trying this out when I upgrade but considering my options at the moment.
I get mine today hopefully... I average about 100k in AP a day which translates through to about 2-3 battery recharges for a note 2.

Got my Note 3 the other week and it is a great phone, except the GPS. Coming from the S4, which has a terrific gps, the game is almost unplayable on the Note 3. The position is drifting although I am standing still or freeze when I am moving. Forget about neat deploys.
I actually sent my unit for repairs. Hopefully they can fix it. Right now back on the S4.

Ouch, Gps is a biggy too and bad placements can be a nightmare. Here is hoping that is a one off.
Just to give another opinion:
I played on Saturday and Monday with the Note 3 for the first time (Verizon model), and I had no issues whatsoever. GPS was awesome, battery life was pretty good (~3-4 hours of Ingress probably but not totally sure) and the game (Broot) ran smooth as butter.
So maybe it's possible some models or some units have GPS issues, but I haven't run into any. Granted, I also haven't played in known GPS-cloudy/floaty areas just yet.
I've had some time with mine now and have found the GPS to be quite flaky.
It's pretty much unusable in a moving vehicle, in the CBD around big buildings Its almost impossible to get lock.
I'm hoping we can tweak this because I still *love* the phone.

I`ve managed to see this in action with the Note 3. First off - excellent device for this game.
Interestingly the GPS in the 1st week was good, then it became gradually more laggy with position so the player would "catch up" as he was moving to the edge of the portal. However, reading another thread which highlighted a similar issue with Google maps; installing GPS status - get the aps state download/calibrate and apparently the issue has now gone.
Perhaps some of you have tried this or not but I would give it a try at least as it appears to have solved the odd drift movement.

My gps ground to a halt today, could not get lock at all.
So I installed gps status but it couldn't get lock either.
So I rebooted and it got lock immediately.
It's been perfect since then.
See how it goes.

Fingers crossed this fixes it. A few of us are about to take the plunge so any feedback will be great on gps performance.
Have you guys tried disabling the "use wireless networks" option in the GPS settings to see if that helps with the inaccurate/laggy location?
It's been pretty good since my fix yesterday
