The galaxy note got a GPS fix mid-air during a flight. I never thought it was possible. Check the screenshot.

Well, the sattelite visibility is very good above the clouds you only have to sit at the window...
Besides that i think that the note has a very good GPS reception! not like my old optimus speed...
the screenshot didn't show up, trying again.

Yes, was at window.
What I am surprised at is how other devices fail miserably at it even on road with internet assistance.

Did you try turn on google map is really fun ,it is going crazy fast like superman
Never managed to lock during flight with my Atrix. I believe due to lack of internet connection.
Perhaps the barometer fixes that...
Cool! Which application is that?
I would suggest next time to use OpenGPS. You can record the whole travel and then replay it in Google earth via KML export/email It doesn't require internet access for recording (though the display of the map will be gray)

I used GPS essentials. I could have recorded using My Tracks or open GPS.
During the flight I was so amazed with it, looking at the climb (altitude change), speed and direction change of the aircraft that I forgot everything else

Power? This is Chuck Norris of phones!
My understanding is that commercial GPS chipsets are restricted to locks above 500 kph (or mph) by the US gubberment. Is it perhaps the GLOSNASS support that is allowing the high speed locking ?
I found the following on another forum talking about ITAR limits that I cannot post a link too as I be a noob:
"Many GPS receivers are restricted in dynamics for military
reasons--dynamics not exceeding--
Dynamics:
Acceleration 4g (39.2 m/s^2)
Motional Jerk 20 m/s^3
Operational limits
Altitude < 18,000 m or velocity < 515 m/s
Either limit may be exceeded but not both (in non-military GPS
receivers).
These restrictions do not apply to the Space Shuttle or LEO satellites
making use of GPS signals. You can always build your own receiver
without restrictions of any kind."
my xperia ARC locked on a flight to HK, it took about 5 mins of holding it to the window but it did lock.
I read somewhere that Glonass satellites are numbered between 45 and 65. Didn't check it during this flight, will see next time what satellites are used in fix.

I tried it, its a bit temperamental here in the uk.
Google have basically reinvented twitter, but in this case it is potentially useful!
I dont have the layer for maps, of the icon on the browser - maybe cuz im uk??

I went to my Gmail page on my laptop, and didn't have a Buzz label. I haven't tried updating Maps on my phone yet, but I will now and play with it...

Not only that, but Buzz doesn't really fill the same niche that Twitter does. Twitter has Geolocation, but doesn't really focus on it. Twitter is more about mini-conversations, and sharing byte-sized information.
This is kind of like Britekite or something.

yes, the Nearby list is sorted via proximity, and on the map, they expire after 24hrs.
anyone having the issue with "posting" the first time you try to post via the mobile site - you may need to turn ON your pop-up windows. There is a pop-up that asks for permission to show your location.
I ended up downloading Dolphin, and it worked there (after the pop-up)... after that the stock Android browser worked correctly.
This thread is basically for those who got their Galaxy S to show off their photos and whatnots they have with it.

Use the front-facing camera much?
So I'm in the USA, and I see a Galaxy S-like device called the captivate coming to AT&T...
I see the AT&T version has no flash and no front-facing camera. Does anyone use the front-facing camera much? If so, what for? Self pics/mirror or actual video conversations?
Any other differences between the Galaxy S (as on Samsung's web-site) and the Captivate?
Thanks,
Manos
Depends on your situation whether you'll be using the front-facing camera for video chats or whatnot. I personally wouldn't use the front camera for much since not many people I know have front facing cameras, too and I don't really care for it.
The only difference we can see so far is a different phone design, missing front camera, and apparently the AT&T version gets a gyroscope/six-axis motion sensor aimed at gaming. The AT&T version is also a 16gb base handset but you can add a microSD card for a maximum of 32gb.
Overall, I'm looking forward to the AT&T version although I'm bummed they scrapped the front-facing camera because of principle (Competition is too close for iPhone).

ooh..no led notifications??
i was expecting the little strip above the word samsung to have leds??
Actually the phone has 384000 tiny LEDs. Do you want more?
Now seriously: Since AMOLEDs only consume energy when used, it would be great if the screen (in standby) could show some small visual notification. Are you listening Samsung?

GLONASS support and fast GPS fix is well know...
Since it works so well, no one cares to complain ( like in SGS ) and less know.
You r right. GPS fix is fastest that i have ever seen. Way better than my garmin devices. Even on a cloudy day
GPS lock is insanely fast on this device. Samsung did a great job on this Peabody.
Barometer.
barometer can only make a difference in the altitude readings ( how high you are ) Broadcom states that the Note can use data from twice as many satellites than, let's say, GS2. And as winnie the pooh said: The more - the mucher
I can't wait to finally have good GPS again. My Captivate actually isn't too bad - for a Captivate. Having come from a Garmin iQue 3600, however, I have been very frustrated with it.

Altitude has always been an issue with GPS. Garmin came out with an aviation 3600 that sold well, but the standard GPS measuring tools are better on the horizontal plane, rather than the vertical, it will be interesting to see how this has advanced.

BCM47511 chipset? I was hoping the Note would have the SirfstarIV chipset...
But seems to be everybody is happy with the Note's Gps performance anyway so....it's all good..
Gonna get my Note in January....it's about time to make new gps videos...
The ones on my sign is from my sgs's eclair times
I can confirm the incredible quick fix of the Note'GPS: the best one I ever had .
Even the sensitivity is great. I just tried now to fix with the phone inside the apartment. It took 8 seconds for a cold fix while other phones or gps system were not even able to get a fix (including my previous GS II) .
In the car it takes +/- 5 seconds for a cold fix. In the past I could start driving for sometime while waiting for the gps fix in other phones or GPS system.
I'm fully satisfied with the note gps.
As the title says, Note has mind blowing GPS lock speed. I came from host of devices from Nokia, Acer, HTC and one dedicated GPS and Note beats them all. 2 seconds outside, 7 seconds inside the room (with windows).

I would really like to know the answer to this question too. Since GPS is global, I really need to educate myself about GLONASS before I test this stuff out.
However, as long as the GPS is working better then on the S II I'm happy.
Try GPS Test. Satellites with numbers over 60 = GLONASS.

I think it's cool that Galileo provide both way communication with satellites. How cool apps could spawn from this... =)

Good:

Wifi data indicators back!
Network mode setting back!

FM Working again!
XILA2 overscroll glow, more subtle.
Deep sleep works. It always has! Stop asking!
GPS works in maps app and GPS test apps!
Extremely fast GPS lock, even indoors! Extremely unreal of Samsung devices
Quite stable.
Private browsing.
Market works perfectly.
Faceunlock works. *sigh*
USB mode works!
USB host working apparently!
Vibration works well.
Data stats shows individual apps!
Data indicator working!
Helvetica S replaced by Helvetica Neue (used on retina display iPhones).
Bad:
Google widgets still can't be resized.
You have to manually set APN sometimes.
Market FCs when you try to use voice search.
MHL not working.
Ugly:
New samsung animations, similar to GB.
Google Apps logos in notifications bar look distorted and ugly.
Task switching looks weird. See below in screenshots.
