EVO Shift 4G vs. Epic 4G
Which is the phone to get?
Why?
Title says it all.
Let the battle begin.
At this point I'd say shift simply because it has better chance of getting gingerbread..

Research the hardware before you make a decision.

for me Epic:
1)the Screen, colors are just awesome
2)the 5 row keyboard "numbers have their own row"
3)ffc, not that I use it but just in case -----specs I seen for Shift from www some have ffc and some don't, I am leaning Shift has no ffc
For me... Epic!!
From what I understand the screen on the shift is going to be 3.5inches? Correct me if I am wrong.. if the shift had the screen size of the epic/evo, I would be more then happy to go to that phone
Sent from my Samsung-SPH-D700 using XDA App
The Evo Shift has a 3.6 inch screen. DISQUALIFIED.
Also, hardware wise it falls short in every single respect doesn't it? The only positive is that its made by HTC and will actually get developer support, and has the EVO name so sprint might actually give a damn.
It depends on what you want. My wife wants the shift because its smaller. If it came down to specs id rather have the shift because it has the same amazkng processor as the g2.

Shift...have you seen the fighting in the epic section....
Scent phrum mie fone!
id say shift cause its not made by samsung.......epic is a better phone in general though. at the end of the day at least you know the shift will get support.
If you can afford it, the epic. They're two entirely different classes of devices, with the epic being the better
It should be shift 4g vs the intercept
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Also, the shift 4g will probably be better supported softwarewise
But the epic is better in every respect hardware wise

You are 100% wrong. Please go research the desire z/g2 because I would die for that 800mhz processor. It blows our 1ghz without even trying. The epic wins in screen clarity. Some people will argue its size too but that is completely subjective. My wife hates the size of my epic but I love it. If the g2 proc came in a phone with 4+ inch samoled I would pay for it unsubsidized.
Sent from my ext4 Epic 4G running Bonsai4all 1.1.3!
I say the epic as long as your comfortable rootng and flashing your phone. I love the extra wide/tall keyboard with a number row. Given that i have to take lots of notes on my phone this is invaluable. I agree that the epic hardware is largely superior, though perhaps the build quality will be a bit better on a htc phone with the evo name. Almost surely the htc software will be tighter and more frequently updated. Ultimately its pretty close. i'd have to feel both in my hands befor i made the switch. One thing is the epic dev scene seems pretty hot and heavy right now.
Sent from my Epic running bonsai 1.1.3 on ext4.
If you like to ***** and whine about how your phone doesn't have the latest software, even tho it's faster than most with it, the Epic is your choice.
If you like the latest software, decent hardware, big fuquadrant scores, and crappy camera quality, HTC is your choice.

While the 800mhz processor in the desire z/g2 is nice..ours is still better....it may be A LOT better then the 1ghz one in the EVO but definitely not on par with ours...

Agreed. Right now, the Hummingbird is the fastest of the ARM Cortex A8 processors, beating out clock for clock both the Snapdragon and OMAP platforms. Plus the graphics is substantially better.
The ARM Cortex A9 CPUs will yet again beat those. I'd recommend holding off if you're buying a new phone. Wait for the A9 parts to come out. The A9 CPUs will probably be the latest version until maybe late 2012 when the ARM Eagle CPUs begin to come out.

1. Not only are the colors on the Epic just awesome, the EVO Shift is going to have a smaller screen.
3. EVO Shift does not have a front facing camera. I saw our advertising sheets for it yesterday.
Evo shift doesn't have S-amoled. Evo shift has a smaller screen (4" is my minimum"). Epic is just awesome.
Only thing is... if you like fast updates, that is a definite plus for HTC.

This is the one major detractor for me. The big upside is how stable and powerful the 800mhz chip is; it has been overclocked to 1.9ghz in a stable rom. Of course, it gets hot but that is a more than doubling of the proc speed.
I'm thinking of trading my evo for the shift any advice or thoughts from someone that has the shift
Miui 1.1.28. Tapatalk
Only had the shift for a few days but can already say that I love this phone a lot better than my evo. I don't even miss the bigger screen because the speed of this device is rediculous and smooth like the original evo should have been with its 1ghz processor. Also to mention this phone already has a very stable 1.51ghz overclock kernel. This thing is a beast and this is coming from a guy who had the evo for almost a year.
Sent from my Evolution
Is the res the same as the evo or better? One of the reasons I want to trade is because I'm ready for a smaller phone. I'm glad to hear that it is smoother than the evo because that was one of the things that would have held me back because I thought it wasn't going to be as fast as the evo
Miui 1.1.28. Tapatalk
I highly recommend the EVO shift This is my first Android phone and It's the best phone I've ever had.not to mention the speed of this thing. I recently overclocked this to 1.5 and I was running it at 1.2ghz and I ran a quadrant test alongside my brothers EVO and it got twice what the EVO got. And the screen is really nice looking. Not to sure on the numbers tho. And also the keyboard is really easy to type on once u get use to it. So I say u should definitly switch to the shift.
And also the battery on it is great . I can easily make it through A full day with atleast 30 percent left with the overclock

They actually have the same screen resolution, but text should look a little sharper on the shift since it is on a smaller screen.

after having a moment this thing flat ass rocks!
To me it's all about personal preference. i couldn't go with the EVO cuz it was just too big and no keyboard. The Shift is a ridiculously fast phone. if you don't mind a lil bit smaller screen with a slideout keyboard then i suggest then Shift. If you need a bigger screen and don't really need a keyboard. stick with the EVO. but i think the shift will be around alot longer to come
I had a Evo, got bored with it so I bought the Shift and its awesome.

the largest difference affecting actual usage is the lack of a front facing camera. If that's no big deal to you, then the only difference is a smaller screen, hard keyboard, and flat out KICKASS performance.
Came from a moment, love the **** out of my shift.
Oh, and it can actually be stabely overclocked to 1.8 now =D
so if i get the shift wats the risk of making a 500 buck paper weight. ive rooted and custom recoveried two phones an they were pretty simple but the shift seems lyk its wayyy more fine detailed
Its not that hard just follow the guide...it just uses a different type of partition is all...
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
The shift is better than the evo due to battery life alone...then you have the keyboard, the better processor, etc. Only thing evo has going for is is the larger screen. But then again, the screen resolutions are the same, so as long as you have good eyes, the shift wins on all accounts.
My friend is going to get the shift because she needs the keyboard. She can't do the touch screen because of her nails. And don't come in here with your bs stories about how fast it is. The best score on quadrant is like 1300 and my evo gets 1090 so we know that phone can't get 2000. But its nice to hear that u guys like it and love the speed of it. But doesn't that phone have a 800 mhz CPU? What do u think they did to it to make to run so nice? I played with it at the store and it did seem very snappy. Do u think the evo runs slower because it takes more to run the larger screen?

Your getting 1300 because you have rooted. That was a noun problem that the quadrants went from 1600 to around 1300 after root. Ruu and run the benchmark again

i just got off the phone with Sprint.. I upgraded to the S from an EVO.. anyone on sprint with one? any issues? etc.. the camera on my evo SUCKED .. never was good..
anywho.. thanks!

ummm... do some reading on here.
besides radio signal issues on some of the handsets (some users don't experience it), i like pretty much everything about the ns over the evo. the camera doesn't shoot 720 like the evo does, but somehow it looks a lot better.
oh yes, welcome!
I came from an EVO as well. Besides the known issues like signal I am loving things phone. EVO feels like a brick after using this.
cool.. well my camera sucks.. so.. anything would be an improvement..
Upgraded from the hero. No signal issues in my area. Its a greaaaat phone IMO
yeah, I too came from an Evo and having no issues... phones faster, better battery, better screen, lighter, less bloatware-y, etc... glad I upgraded
it's a great phone, it will be better once they resolve the signal issues that are plaguing most users.
I switched to the NS4G from the EVO 4G as well and not one regret here. Luckily I am not having the signal strength problem. The people on the EVO forum that think that just because the processor is the same speed as on the EVO that it is not an upgrade. I disagree. The hardware in the NS4G is much better than the EVO and this thing boots in mere seconds. GPU intensive gaming is amazing compared to the EVO, and seriously the only thing I miss about the EVO is the larger screen, but believe me the higher resolution on the NS4G and the super amoled screen make up for the size difference. It is slimmer, lighter, faster, better battery life and just an all around better phone. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Yeah I notice it. Its because it has a better sleep policy...I notice that it turns 4g to idle when not in use.
I just upgraded from a Samsung Moment which is one of the worst phones in the history of phones. I'm not used to having a GPS get a lock in under 5min and no data lock-ups randomly. Plus the battery life on the Moment is seriously the worst so even thought this phones doesn't have the best battery life, anything is an upgrade over the Moment. Only thing that sucks is the radios are not strong in the Nexus S and hope they fix it soon.

Yeah same resolution but is smaller screen so it looks better, and the amoled makes the evo look washed out.
Anyways I came from the evo, and I like it so far GPU is better and for some reason it feels faster then the evo, the hummingbird processor is better then the evo's processor, the camera takes better pics and even in the dark it works better then the evo even tho it doesn't have touch to focus, 720p wasn't a big deal I use my videos to sent by email and 720p were too big, I got a point to shoot the records 720p /60fps for that, no radio problems here, mmm what else? ?? Oh yeah the speaker in the back seems to be less loud then the evo but the speaker up front (the one you use to.make calls) is really good, 4G seems to kill battery faster but that's something that I would expect but it does kill battery slower then the evo (you won't notice unless you have measure time on both, GPS seems to lock 2-5 seconds while the evo lock GPS really quick, overall I'm happy with the NS4G and I can't wait to get Ice cream this fall/winter
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I also upgraded from the Evo and I am very happy with the Nexus S. The whole phone feels snappier and smoother. I'm getting 65fps on fps2d compared to 50 with the evo. The first few days when I got it it kept irritating me because it couldn't keep a wifi signal very well, but then I remembered that by default wifi turns off when you turn the screen off, so changed to never turn off and now it always stays connected. This is def. an upgrade from the Evo.

The epic pretty much is an all around better phone
An argument could be made on the SW side, but that falls by the wayside if you are not staying stock
Mainly, the EVO Shift is simply missing to many top level hardware items, that make it a upper mid range phone rather than the top tier the Epic is
I was faced with the same question when I bought not long ago.
Screen size favors Epic (4.0" - 3.6" That's a significant difference in Real Estate)
Screen brightness favors Epic (Samsungs Super AMOLED easily tops anything HTC has IMO)
Keyboard favors Epic (the larger size of the phone spaces the keys better, Epic has 5 rows including dedicated number row)
Processor favors the Epic (1.0 Ghz Hummingbird - 800 Mhz Snapdragon)
I believe rated battery stock time is 5.50 hrs for Epic to 6.00 for Shift.
Epic has front facing camera (which I never use, but some people do I'm sure)
The list goes on, but you can google other features.
As far as Flashing ROMs, I am NOT really tech savvy, but after reading through these forums I was not only able to root the phone quickly, but flashing was simple and I have found the ROMs I've used to be stable and functional with very few bugs. Can't beat that.
Epic, all the way.

Even though i love my epic i would go with the shift because it has locked gps in a few seconds and capable of overclocking to 2.0Ghz and 1.6Ghz stable.
Its fun to use but i like epic 4g because of its screen. and Samsung is Easy to manipulate and easy to use like rooting and all that stuff.
But now its easy to get the Shift rooted in all.
I just like the bigger screen and AMOLED is deal breaker. i went with the shift at 1st because Samsung pissed me off as well as thousands more, with a certain phone.
Thanks everybody for your answers .. I'm leaning towards the Epic now.

I haven't heard of the Epic screens blacking out, but mine has held up beyond belief, even after facing harsh abuse.
IMO, it is a not a "power/speed" issue that makes the EVO Shift a lesser phone, but the overall lack of top end hardware features, and those CAN'T be modded in later
Here are several reviews with the conclusions, as well as links to the original reviews, and the Epic is not just a winner, but a CLEAR winner in every case.
From Techd
You don’t have to imagine how two Android smartphones would perform when pitted against one another, as the folks at WireFly have done the deed. Pitting HTC EVO Shift 4G against the Samsung Epic 4G, the latter wins out big time.
...
So, it seems like the EVO Shift 4G did admirably well for some basic processes, but stumbled badly when it comes to complex 3G graphics. But then again, it has a lower running processor than the Epic 4G with only 800MHz — though that’s not the end all be all performance measurement.

4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G
Avatar for Brian Barrett Brian Barrett —4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G Let's say you want a 4G phone, because 4 is one more G than your current phone has. If you're deciding between Sprint's finest—the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic 4G—you're gonna want to watch this.
Both phones are sliders, both are on the same network, and by outward appearances seem pretty much identical. But! The Epic 4G, it turns out, is packing way more horses under the hood. As it should, considering it costs almost twice as much as the Shift.

The Winner
Unlike other previous battles such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic battle, Samsung Epic 4Gthe HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic 4G battle seems to have a pretty clear cut winner. The Samsung Epic 4G, even though it came out first, has huge advantages when it comes to display, and features while the HTC EVO Shift 4G manages to win a slight edge in design and software. Overall the advantages of the Samsung Epic 4G are too big to ignore and it easily comes out on top in this battle of 4G keyboard slider smartphones on Sprint.

heres the thing though Shift is running 2nd Gen Snap. And even @ 800Mhz it pulls double score than Epic @1Ghz both on froyo.
Then Shift on 2.3 just blows the sh*t outta the Epic.
Newer Technology is better.
Older Technology is Wiser.
But in the end its all down to personal preference.
Just mess with both phones see what you really like and want.

What u think? Is it even better than the 3D? Does the lack of dual core really make much of a difference

for me the absence dual core really makes a difference.
rdia am grateful to for giving me this forum stated he is very good and has lots of variety.
Seems like a decent offering with a solid price point for those not wanting some cutting edge specs. But I don't know if I'd go from a 4G to this, especially locking in for 2 years.
In hindsight I prediro a specification point.

I'm wondering is it actually better than the og Evo?
8mp vs 5 MP camera
1ghz vs 1.2 ghz processeor
Kickstand vs no kickstand (I know not really a big deal)
4.3 in screen vs 4 in screen
Battery...to be continued
Massive dev support vs ??

i got my evo 4g on release day, had it for about 9 months and then bought a shift. i then switched to us cellular 3 weeks ago, had a motorola electrify (photon) and swapped it for the hero-s which is the same as the evo design minus the wimax radio and world capabilities. figured i'd post my thoughts on it here since there's no forum for the hero-s.
the camera is absolutely fantastic. i'm assuming the design will have the same one. it's got a f2.2 lens, so it's amazing in low light. i use my camera a LOT and that was a big downside to the electrify for me.
the cpu is a 2nd generation snapdragon, so it's more than just a 200mhz speed bump. it's quite a bit faster. it also has an adreno 205 vs. the 200 as the gpu, which is a significant upgrade. i honestly don't notice much of a difference between my hero-s and the electrify i had. i don't play many cpu/ gpu intensive games, but it's run everything i've thrown at it with ease. it's not a top of the line multi-core speed demon, but i really don't need that. it's fast, everything runs smooth, and that's all i need/ want.
no kickstand, but not really needed. the 4" qhd screen is probably 90% of the reason i went with this phone. the screen looks great, i really like the higher resolution, and it's just so much easier for me to hold. i actually have pretty big hands, but the evo 4g and electrify are just awkward for me to hold. i sold my evo 4g and got a shift because of this, and traded my electrify for the hero-s for the same reason. this should be a great choice for people who don't want a bigger screen.
battery life seems decent. i can make it through the day with moderate use. if i'm driving i'll plug it in if i'm using nav/ maps, but overall it's ok. probably a bit better than my shift and it seems better than my evo 4g from what i can remember of it.
as for massive dev support... oh god i hope there's some action with this phone on sprint, there's not much going on with it on the USC side (at least not yet). i'd think it'll get rooted/ s-off somewhat quickly, but who knows. this thing would scream with cm7 on it, and i'm thinking it'll run ICS just fine.
there's no world phone capabilities on my hero-s, so i can't comment on that. it seems like that would be a very nice feature for people who need it though.
overall, i love this thing. it's very thin, i love the aluminium unibody, the button placement is great, it's very zippy, the screen resolution and size are perfect for me, and the camera is fantastic. i never thought i'd say this, but i actually kind of *like* sense 3.0 too. i think it's a great phone if you don't need the latest and greatest, and if you want a screen that's between 3.5" and 4.3", this might be what you're looking for. hope this helps, and if anyone has any questions about the phone i'll answer if i can!
if i could break my evo and get this as a replacement that would be nice...

You may be able to since the evo has been discontinued idk if this means anything but a couple years ago I broke my sidekick and called to get it replaced with T-Mobile but they said it is discontinued so they gave me a g1 of course that was when it first came out but like I said that was tmobile who knows what sprint will do

Yeah, I wouldn't complain.
viva la MIUI
It has the smaller 45nm scorpion core which generates less heat and uses less power, so that's a plus, and I believe clock for clock the Scorpion core is faster than the original Snapdragon 65nm core. Then there's the Adreno 205 as far as visually demanding apps goes.

After reading that, I'm even more excited for Sunday!
pretty sure you'll love it- it's a damned nice little phone. my wife's swapping out her HTC merge (USCC's version of the evo shift) for a hero-s today since she liked mine so much and kept stealing it from me!
i made a mistake in my previous post, the hero-s *does* have GSM/ global roaming capabilities, so it really is very close to the evo design 4g then. it just doesn't have the wimax radio... so i'm hoping hoping hoping that any roms and root methods for the design will also work on the hero-s (like the photon stuff works on the electrify on USCC).
HTC Evo Design longer than Hero S??
Just read dimensions on Evo design 4g - and it seems it is longer (4.8 vs 4.5 inches) than the Hero S? Anyone have idea why as it looks like the same phone?
Is this phone worth a 2-year contract or would I be better off adding $50 or so dollars and buying a used Evo while I wait for the Prime?

both evo design 4g and hero s have qhd screens. so why different reported dimensions?
