I'm thinking of trading my evo for the shift any advice or thoughts from someone that has the shift
Miui 1.1.28. Tapatalk
Only had the shift for a few days but can already say that I love this phone a lot better than my evo. I don't even miss the bigger screen because the speed of this device is rediculous and smooth like the original evo should have been with its 1ghz processor. Also to mention this phone already has a very stable 1.51ghz overclock kernel. This thing is a beast and this is coming from a guy who had the evo for almost a year.
Sent from my Evolution
Is the res the same as the evo or better? One of the reasons I want to trade is because I'm ready for a smaller phone. I'm glad to hear that it is smoother than the evo because that was one of the things that would have held me back because I thought it wasn't going to be as fast as the evo
Miui 1.1.28. Tapatalk
I highly recommend the EVO shift This is my first Android phone and It's the best phone I've ever had.not to mention the speed of this thing. I recently overclocked this to 1.5 and I was running it at 1.2ghz and I ran a quadrant test alongside my brothers EVO and it got twice what the EVO got. And the screen is really nice looking. Not to sure on the numbers tho. And also the keyboard is really easy to type on once u get use to it. So I say u should definitly switch to the shift.
And also the battery on it is great . I can easily make it through A full day with atleast 30 percent left with the overclock

They actually have the same screen resolution, but text should look a little sharper on the shift since it is on a smaller screen.

Yes the res is the same as the EVO but looks better because screen size.

after having a moment this thing flat ass rocks!
To me it's all about personal preference. i couldn't go with the EVO cuz it was just too big and no keyboard. The Shift is a ridiculously fast phone. if you don't mind a lil bit smaller screen with a slideout keyboard then i suggest then Shift. If you need a bigger screen and don't really need a keyboard. stick with the EVO. but i think the shift will be around alot longer to come
I had a Evo, got bored with it so I bought the Shift and its awesome.

the largest difference affecting actual usage is the lack of a front facing camera. If that's no big deal to you, then the only difference is a smaller screen, hard keyboard, and flat out KICKASS performance.
Came from a moment, love the **** out of my shift.
Oh, and it can actually be stabely overclocked to 1.8 now =D
so if i get the shift wats the risk of making a 500 buck paper weight. ive rooted and custom recoveried two phones an they were pretty simple but the shift seems lyk its wayyy more fine detailed
Its not that hard just follow the guide...it just uses a different type of partition is all...
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
The shift is better than the evo due to battery life alone...then you have the keyboard, the better processor, etc. Only thing evo has going for is is the larger screen. But then again, the screen resolutions are the same, so as long as you have good eyes, the shift wins on all accounts.
My friend is going to get the shift because she needs the keyboard. She can't do the touch screen because of her nails. And don't come in here with your bs stories about how fast it is. The best score on quadrant is like 1300 and my evo gets 1090 so we know that phone can't get 2000. But its nice to hear that u guys like it and love the speed of it. But doesn't that phone have a 800 mhz CPU? What do u think they did to it to make to run so nice? I played with it at the store and it did seem very snappy. Do u think the evo runs slower because it takes more to run the larger screen?

Your getting 1300 because you have rooted. That was a noun problem that the quadrants went from 1600 to around 1300 after root. Ruu and run the benchmark again

EVO Shift 4G vs. Epic 4G
Which is the phone to get?
Why?

Let the battle begin.
At this point I'd say shift simply because it has better chance of getting gingerbread..

Research the hardware before you make a decision.

for me Epic:
1)the Screen, colors are just awesome
2)the 5 row keyboard "numbers have their own row"
3)ffc, not that I use it but just in case -----specs I seen for Shift from www some have ffc and some don't, I am leaning Shift has no ffc
For me... Epic!!
From what I understand the screen on the shift is going to be 3.5inches? Correct me if I am wrong.. if the shift had the screen size of the epic/evo, I would be more then happy to go to that phone
Sent from my Samsung-SPH-D700 using XDA App
The Evo Shift has a 3.6 inch screen. DISQUALIFIED.
Also, hardware wise it falls short in every single respect doesn't it? The only positive is that its made by HTC and will actually get developer support, and has the EVO name so sprint might actually give a damn.
It depends on what you want. My wife wants the shift because its smaller. If it came down to specs id rather have the shift because it has the same amazkng processor as the g2.

id say shift cause its not made by samsung.......epic is a better phone in general though. at the end of the day at least you know the shift will get support.
If you can afford it, the epic. They're two entirely different classes of devices, with the epic being the better
It should be shift 4g vs the intercept

You are 100% wrong. Please go research the desire z/g2 because I would die for that 800mhz processor. It blows our 1ghz without even trying. The epic wins in screen clarity. Some people will argue its size too but that is completely subjective. My wife hates the size of my epic but I love it. If the g2 proc came in a phone with 4+ inch samoled I would pay for it unsubsidized.
Sent from my ext4 Epic 4G running Bonsai4all 1.1.3!
I say the epic as long as your comfortable rootng and flashing your phone. I love the extra wide/tall keyboard with a number row. Given that i have to take lots of notes on my phone this is invaluable. I agree that the epic hardware is largely superior, though perhaps the build quality will be a bit better on a htc phone with the evo name. Almost surely the htc software will be tighter and more frequently updated. Ultimately its pretty close. i'd have to feel both in my hands befor i made the switch. One thing is the epic dev scene seems pretty hot and heavy right now.
Sent from my Epic running bonsai 1.1.3 on ext4.
If you like to ***** and whine about how your phone doesn't have the latest software, even tho it's faster than most with it, the Epic is your choice.
If you like the latest software, decent hardware, big fuquadrant scores, and crappy camera quality, HTC is your choice.

Agreed. Right now, the Hummingbird is the fastest of the ARM Cortex A8 processors, beating out clock for clock both the Snapdragon and OMAP platforms. Plus the graphics is substantially better.
The ARM Cortex A9 CPUs will yet again beat those. I'd recommend holding off if you're buying a new phone. Wait for the A9 parts to come out. The A9 CPUs will probably be the latest version until maybe late 2012 when the ARM Eagle CPUs begin to come out.

1. Not only are the colors on the Epic just awesome, the EVO Shift is going to have a smaller screen.
3. EVO Shift does not have a front facing camera. I saw our advertising sheets for it yesterday.
Evo shift doesn't have S-amoled. Evo shift has a smaller screen (4" is my minimum"). Epic is just awesome.
Only thing is... if you like fast updates, that is a definite plus for HTC.

This is the one major detractor for me. The big upside is how stable and powerful the 800mhz chip is; it has been overclocked to 1.9ghz in a stable rom. Of course, it gets hot but that is a more than doubling of the proc speed.
Can we? pretty pretty please????

Look at the Benchmarks for the G2, same processor. Blows the Evo away and can be overclocked to 1.8GHZ. Evo can barely handle 1.2.
The Shift has the same screen resolution on a smaller screen.

It doesn't have the little stand. It has only one LED flash, apparently.
The fact that screen is smaller make it's more portable for some people and at the same resolution means it will have a better picture. Most people don't want or have a need for a FFC.
The benchmarks show that performance wise it is a better phone than the Evo. The rest is up to personal preference.
The Evo is still a beast, however the Evo Shift is no slouch either.

Less camera and flash, less size. If it's smaller then it's expected to use less power. I still like the size of the regular EVO. How about the main memory? I have a lot of trouble with EVO after I installed Twitter. It accumulates more and more megs over time, and it cannot be moved to the mem card. Maybe this one will come with more memory.

If you're rooted and I'm assuming you are, you can move Twitter to your SD card using Titanium Backup. Now if you are using the widget then it will have to stay on the phone memory, but I use Tweetdeck and never have any use for the widget so it works out.
If you haven't tried Tweetdeck I highly recommend giving it a go.
I'm actually really digging the shift. I want a keyboard, don't need a ffc, don't want a 4.3 inch screen, like the processor (it really is awesome) like the gpu, and love that its made by htc. If u have an evo then stick with it, but I skipped the evo for a hardware keyboard, and won't touch the epic because samsung has tricked me with their "next big thing" before (instinct, etc.) I'm truly excited for this phone. Research it before you dis it, and realize that different consumers have different needs.

I hate that everyone with an EVO is hating on this phone. People dont understand the mhz isnt everything ex; celeron vs pentium. I guarantee when it drops and pulls some good development its gonna woop on the EVO as far as processing power and usability. Then all you guys are gonna be able to complain about is that there isnt a 4.3'' screen and a FFC. Considering I wont be using video calls and hate the size/battery life of the EVO I cant wait to get this phone as it is the reason why I held off from buying the EVO in the first place. This phone after OC is gonna be one of the fastest phones on the market I can assure you (Look how fast the G2 is)
Infact, My free optimus s beats the EVO on a lot of the benchmarks I've tested it on...
I really cant wait to have the shift OC'd to 1.5+ to rub it in to all my friends with the EVO

Are you sure is the same camera? (just asking, not trying to antagonize or anything) I though EVO is 8 MP, and the Shift is 5 MP or so? Also, EVO has 2 LED's as flashes. This one, judging by the picture, seems to have only one. Maybe an indication of the camera capabilities.
Thank you for the tip about Tweetdeck. I definitely will try it. The Twitter app is great, but every week it adds more and more megs up to its used mem.
Thanks again.

The camera is the same one from the G2/Desire Z not the Evo. Sorry if I was confusing above. From what I've read the G2 takes better pics than the Evo even though it is only 5MP as opposed to the Evo's 8MP.

Glad Tweetdeck worked out for. Check out the Chrome app or desktop version too. Outstanding! Thanks for the thanks!

What were your reasons for switching to the shift? I can deal with no hard keyboard and crap battery life, but was there a noticable difference in processor speed?
Sent from my HTC Hero CDMA using XDA App
The processor while only 800MHz vastly outperforms the 1GHz in the EVO. Also, since the CPU in the Shift is a 45nm processor it gets much, much battery life sitting on a stock configuration. Once we have perma-root and NAND unlock on this thing you'll be able to overclock it massively without much loss in the way of battery life. The GPU is also much better than the EVO's. This phone flies compared to the EVO at stock and even on CM or Myn's Warm 2.2.
I came from an EVO and haven't regretted it at all.
My things are that I am not a huge fan of the smaller screen...taller but not much wider than my hero...and I am a romaholic will it be ready to port evo roms or g2 roms to the shift?

Until we get a perm root with nand unlock, the only thing folks can give you is speculation. Until said time, the answer would be "NO".

The biggest most notable issue for me was the drastic change in screen size, its not a issue for me now though, as I consider the battery life to be an excellent compromise in place of the larger display. And I do notice a difference with the cpu when I'm playing dungeon defenders, gameboid, or need for speed shift. This phone also handles gt racing hd much more fluidly than my evo ever has. I do prefer reading books on the evo in a pinch/ whenever my kindle isn't within reach.

I'm sorry i could not get past the drastic downgrade in screen size. Once you have had an evo.. a real evo, you cannot downgrade for a phone that has the potential to have a better battery duration, cpu, and gpu. You must understand that one of the leading factors as to why the evo's battery depletes so fast is because of the larger and might i add more beautiful screen. Until, they come out with a real evo shift with the same size (at least 4") screen with better battery life i will never switch to a lesser version of my phone.
note: I had a "evo" shift pre-ordered until i saw what it really was; a false association with the original evo in order to generate more revenue.

LOL he's a guru, of course he knows that, and he also knows that the Evo is superior to the Shift in performance...oh wait...
After removing a lot of the crapware in the phone and keeping stock apps that I will use, the shift is even more responsive than out of the box. I'm only keeping or installing apps that don't slow down the phone and ones I use everyday. I try to keep it lean and quick. I had my doubts in the beginning until I figured out some of my essential apps were slowing things down. I found smaller and quicker alternatives.
It is amazing how much quicker things run when I switched to adw ex, fast preset, turn off eye candy, use gingerbread theme and smaller filesize keyboards. Gingerkeyboard, Dr.ben0x keyboard, HTC ime mod with custom theme, battery notif all help with keeping my phone "speedy". Pun intended
I have an EVO, but my girlfriend will be purchasing an EVO in a week.

while webguru does come off sounding like a bonehead with all his "Real EVO" talk, I do own both phones and I'd say the performance of the Shift at 800mhz to be very similar to the EVO at 1ghz. This was comparing things like load up time and performance of web browsing, gaming (from emulators all the way up to extremely graphic intensive games (N.O.V.A., Asphalt5, etc.)) and video playback, as well as plain old UI fluidity. And to be perfectly honest there is no noticeable difference stock vs stock. We'll have to wait until root is achieved so we can see the true potential of the Shift but as it stands right now with stock configurations, you can't give much of an edge to the shift processor wise. You can post all the quadrant and smartbench scores you want but real world, both devices side by side simultaneously running the same programs, they run essentially identical. So pick your poison: Do you want a bigger screen...or a hardware keyboard. Both phones kick ass!
As likely as it is that the shift will gain root/overclocking, as it stands, Cyanogen on the EVO currently blows away the stock shift in my experience.

while webguru does come off sounding like a bonehead with all his "Real EVO" talk, I do own both phones and I'd say the performance of the Shift at 800mhz to be very similar to the EVO at 1ghz.

Try playing Dungeon Defenders, that game plays just awful on my Evo, wether I'm running RLS5, CM6.1, or MiUi, or any multitude of the available kernels that include HAVS,BFS, ect.It stutters hangs up sometimes while trying to navigate the menu, and you don't have to have a lot of enemies on the screen simultaneously for framerate to drop signifigantly to the point of being unplayable. On the Shift Dungeon Defenders is actually playable.

I upgraded from my EVO, reason is I hate Touch keyboards, and Evo was a bit big in my pocket. CPU and GPU alot better on the Shift, battery life seems great even on stock rom. I switched back to using my EVO until a perm root and nand unlock is achieved and better roms are released. Phone is the perfect size to pocket carry and have a physical keyboard. Can't wait to overclock this sucker, Quadrant over 1500 running stock, gotta love that!

Thanks I'll give it a shot, I've been tempted to try out DD. I certainly wasn't trying to say the EVO and Shift are identical performance wise in all situations or will be in the future, I tried to use the words "as it stands" and "essentially" because I was just sharing my overall experience as of right now which is that for 99% of applications available (except Dungeon Defenders apparently lol) as well as core OS apps, the performance of the EVO is extremely similar to that of the Shift. It'll be interesting to see how well the shift holds up in the future as games become more and more complex, hopefully they dont all start requiring Tegra2 too soon but as far as non-600MB (!!! as I just discovered now when trying to download DD, holy crap!) tegra2-tailored games and applications, the EVO can pretty much go blow for blow.
So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.

I would bet that the Epic would perform better and imo the keyboard is also better. Epic is easily rooted and has a nicer display. Easy pick.
And everyone needs boob!

The epic pretty much is an all around better phone
An argument could be made on the SW side, but that falls by the wayside if you are not staying stock
Mainly, the EVO Shift is simply missing to many top level hardware items, that make it a upper mid range phone rather than the top tier the Epic is
I was faced with the same question when I bought not long ago.
Screen size favors Epic (4.0" - 3.6" That's a significant difference in Real Estate)
Screen brightness favors Epic (Samsungs Super AMOLED easily tops anything HTC has IMO)
Keyboard favors Epic (the larger size of the phone spaces the keys better, Epic has 5 rows including dedicated number row)
Processor favors the Epic (1.0 Ghz Hummingbird - 800 Mhz Snapdragon)
I believe rated battery stock time is 5.50 hrs for Epic to 6.00 for Shift.
Epic has front facing camera (which I never use, but some people do I'm sure)
The list goes on, but you can google other features.
As far as Flashing ROMs, I am NOT really tech savvy, but after reading through these forums I was not only able to root the phone quickly, but flashing was simple and I have found the ROMs I've used to be stable and functional with very few bugs. Can't beat that.
Epic, all the way.
Epic. Who ever choosed shift needs a swift kick in the wallnuts.

Even though i love my epic i would go with the shift because it has locked gps in a few seconds and capable of overclocking to 2.0Ghz and 1.6Ghz stable.
Its fun to use but i like epic 4g because of its screen. and Samsung is Easy to manipulate and easy to use like rooting and all that stuff.
But now its easy to get the Shift rooted in all.
I just like the bigger screen and AMOLED is deal breaker. i went with the shift at 1st because Samsung pissed me off as well as thousands more, with a certain phone.
Thanks everybody for your answers .. I'm leaning towards the Epic now.

Yeah .. I'm leaning more towards the Epic though just because of the screen and 5 row keyboard.. But the thing I heard is that the Epic phones screen black out all the time, and I'm not going to have insurance or be on Sprint (flashing) .. And the HTC build quality is superior to Samsung. So I'm stuck.. any more suggestions?
I figured I would post this here, even though I also placed it in the troll thread, as it was having the same discussion
I haven't heard of the Epic screens blacking out, but mine has held up beyond belief, even after facing harsh abuse.
IMO, it is a not a "power/speed" issue that makes the EVO Shift a lesser phone, but the overall lack of top end hardware features, and those CAN'T be modded in later
Here are several reviews with the conclusions, as well as links to the original reviews, and the Epic is not just a winner, but a CLEAR winner in every case.
From Techd
You don’t have to imagine how two Android smartphones would perform when pitted against one another, as the folks at WireFly have done the deed. Pitting HTC EVO Shift 4G against the Samsung Epic 4G, the latter wins out big time.
...
So, it seems like the EVO Shift 4G did admirably well for some basic processes, but stumbled badly when it comes to complex 3G graphics. But then again, it has a lower running processor than the Epic 4G with only 800MHz — though that’s not the end all be all performance measurement.

4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G
Avatar for Brian Barrett Brian Barrett —4G Phone Fight: Evo Shift Battles Epic 4G Let's say you want a 4G phone, because 4 is one more G than your current phone has. If you're deciding between Sprint's finest—the HTC Evo Shift and the Samsung Epic 4G—you're gonna want to watch this.
Both phones are sliders, both are on the same network, and by outward appearances seem pretty much identical. But! The Epic 4G, it turns out, is packing way more horses under the hood. As it should, considering it costs almost twice as much as the Shift.

The Winner
Unlike other previous battles such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic battle, Samsung Epic 4Gthe HTC EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic 4G battle seems to have a pretty clear cut winner. The Samsung Epic 4G, even though it came out first, has huge advantages when it comes to display, and features while the HTC EVO Shift 4G manages to win a slight edge in design and software. Overall the advantages of the Samsung Epic 4G are too big to ignore and it easily comes out on top in this battle of 4G keyboard slider smartphones on Sprint.

heres the thing though Shift is running 2nd Gen Snap. And even @ 800Mhz it pulls double score than Epic @1Ghz both on froyo.
Then Shift on 2.3 just blows the sh*t outta the Epic.
Newer Technology is better.
Older Technology is Wiser.
But in the end its all down to personal preference.
Just mess with both phones see what you really like and want.

Never had my screen go black or anything at all for that matter, but that would be covered by manufactures warranty I think.
The screen is amazing.

What do you mean goes black out? like the power saving feature? you can set the timer on that...
As for build quality..who told you HTC phones have better build quality? that is a myth created because the samsung phones feel so light..the build quality is top notch, not to mention Gorilla Glass..

SmartBench 2010 and other various benchmarks but Quadrant does pull higher but thats not point. the point is its newer technology 45nm instead of 65nm.
Check this out. A older video but shows that we arent always the ones that gets the ports from things like the EVO.
Sometimes they borrow from us!

Just felt like sharing. BTW the guy in the video is annoying.
You know miks evo rom is actually the shift rom too right, because when the evo got gingerbread it was only sense 1 shift got sense 2 and the 3D got sense 3, so in my eyes just looking at the type of update the phones got, they already felt the shift was a better performer than evo which in most if not all cases is true, imo the shift gets side stepped because people feel its the bastard child of the original all because of a lower processor speed, which means nothing when you look at the performance it brings, second gen really helped us out with a newer gpu chipset adreno 205 where the evo only has the adreno 200, anyways i wished people would open their eyes to this phone

Yea, my sprint buddy originally told me i was foolish for gettin this phone that the evo was better... Bah
I explained to him that this cpu was nextgen, by being developed on a smaller process we dont require the clock speed for good performance.
Also the smaller process the chips are manufactured on increase battery life tremendously.
How about when the 32 nm intel atoms came out. Instantly we had portable pcs that ran xp phenominally and with a battery life of almost 12 hrs with heavy use.
