This is what really really annoys me!!! - Xperia Play General

Why is it when there are any articles on the Xperia Play the comment sections are always full of "know it all's" that slag the device off without even trying it?
Take a look at Eurogamers new article for example then go down to the comments section - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-06-sony-ericsson-no-need-for-xperia-play-2

Lowering the voltages will have a better effect on battery than lowering the clock speed

can't blame them for wanting more power.but..
whats the good of dual core if you just use is to call and text people

Yeah, the nobs probably don't have one and are jealous because they signed a 4 year contract and still paid 400 for an iphone that is obsolete this month or next.

Problem its people look at specs and benchmarks and never do their own research, very annoying that people including supposedly respectable reviewers are too bothered about the silly specs!
IMO this phone is better than any I've tried, sensation, galaxy s2, desire hd and s none hold up to the gaming and general experience of the XP, just need more advocates like us!
Sony have done really well with the software and all the xda people make things loads better!

Ditto.
People using 'single core' as an argument against it automatically revoke any chance that their opinion is reputable. People who know what they're talking about know it has some blazing fast high-quality memory and acceleration that's great enough to keep it's performance right up there with the dual cores.
Samurai II on Xperia PLAY runs just as smoothly as it does on the Atrix.

Don't mind them.. I came from iPhone also, but nothing compares our phone for now.. I know deep inside of them they want this phone too, they just dont admit that they made a wrong decision by choosing their current phone over this..

I’m happy with it and that is all that matters to me.

(DEVS NEEDED) 30 FPS Issue

OK so we all have heard about the 30 FPS issue that the Evo has...... now lets do something about it since HTC says it was "designed" like that.
Are any of the devs working on this and if your are please share your findings with the rest of the community so we can all chip in and try helping.
Not really a dev, but if you flash the Froyo-Dev ROM, you'll see that the boot animation speeds along at 30+FPS for a while then drops down to 30 after something gets loaded. I don't know if this is unrelated or not, but if it is related, it seems that the cap is software-enforced by a kernel driver or something.

not a dev (but would like to learn).. but i am REALLY glad someone brought this up cause 30fps is NOT GONNA CUT IT.
I Really hope one of these amazing devs can make this happen cause i would hate to have a crippled phone!! lol
I second this motion, this should be high priority. I can't believe the EVO with the hardware that it has "was designed" to under perform. Don't get me wrong the phone is amazing but the future of Android gaming is on the rise. I just purchased NOVA from gameloft. That game is like the mobile version of Halo but it is alittle laggy which makes me sad :'( please help.....

Its a good thing have alot of great devs such as toast have the evo.... I believe that the problem is either associated with OpenGL or a kernal driver but im going to let someone with more knowledge answer that.
Alright correct me if I'm wrong but if a game is running at 30fps then thats pretty smooth, right? I'm not saying this is isn't a bad thing, but you guys need to point your blame elsewhere. The EVO is great but it doesn't have an even halfway decent GPU AFAIK, so that might be too blame if you are having big 3d graphics problems.
What I'm trying to say here is if you were ACTUALLY getting 30fps constantly (because its locked, as in it would normally be higher) then would you notice this?
Didn't think so.

30fps is really laggy! Think about the emulators, those rely solely on cpu speed.

YUP... and doesnt the Incredible and Nexus have the same GPU??
30fps is laggy... you can even notice this in swiping screens and menus.. its just a little choppy... dont get me wrong.. i wouldnt trade this phone for anything.. but the hardware is definitely not seeing its potential here.
Yes let's all correct this guy, there is a huge difference from 30fps to 60fps when running 3d graphic intensive media like some of the other phones out there.

Once again I'm not trying to argue here, I haven't really gamed on my EVO so I will defer to you, if this is causing problems, then it should be addressed. But I have to note one thing: 30 fps is not laggy. Have you ever gone to a movie theater? Those are 24. Traditional camcorders are like 30, but sometimes 60. Yes the human eye can discern more (there is no definite limit... just like there is no single limit to the ppi the eye can see, so shut up SJ, its different for everyone) but at a certain point its like megapixels, you get more garbage than real information.
A real EVO example I can call forth is the Quadrant 3D graphics demos. The first two run like crap... maxing about at probably 20fps, but the planetoid one runs at 30 (capped there, obviously) and is as smooth as butter.
So I think if you had a framerate counter on those games you would be way under 30 when you notice the lag. I think there must be something else at work here.
Edit for webnetics:

ok so we know it makes a differnce... now lets start finding away to fix the problem at hand.... has anyone looked into OpenGL... i remember it has problems in the hero and it messed up the FPS but it was addressed by developers... maybe the problem lays in there.
A pledge for donations sounds good too.... im putting in 5 bucks.. lets keep this going
I can tell you this, when a buddy of mine with a Nexus one and I both loaded up the same games to see the difference next to one another it made me wanna throw my EVO at the ground as hard as I could.
It's choppy, its laggy, its all around BAD. The nexus one has the same processor and gpu and its smooth as a baby's ass. If you can't see it you are in denial.
I think there was a similar issue with the Droid when it got the 2.1 update... maybe we would be looking at a similar fix for the evo??
Why dont you repost this with a bounty to get this fixed?

funny on my phone i notice no "choppyness" or lag could be there but im to busy to notice
For starters, i'm not convinced that the evo runs the froyo/nexus1 boot animation at more than 30fps. it just looks to me like it "runs faster" after the GPU driver loads.
I haven't seen any indication that it's running at 60fps. Just faster than the 10fps it runs before the drivers lod
Second, the gaming lag issues have already been fixed in the froyo build. Asphalt is playable on v6+ of froyo.

N1 so responsive and fast... Wtf.

The N1's app drawer is ridiculously fast, responsive, and 3D. The Evos is garbage, slow, and stuttery even with FPS cap removed. Why is this? They essentially have the same hardware... Why is the Evo so slow and stuttery? Is it the giant screen, perhaps?

Screen size doesn't matter, the resolutions are the same. They use the same CPU/GPU and have the same amount of RAM. If you're running a Sense ROM then you have to consider all the extra processes that take up RAM and CPU time.
If you are running CM6 stable on both, the only other thing I can possibly think of is that there are differences between the GPU drivers.
Edit: are you comparing the Sense launcher with the stock/ADW/LP launcher? If you are, keep in mind that Sense is a ugly, inefficient, bloated POS.

Get a new phone then...sheesh...
3D App Drawer can be tweaked for responsiveness so instead of giving the EVO a bad rap why don't you read through some threads for tweaks and actually try them before you make these kind of comments. Launcher Pro can be ran to use the 3D app drawer perhaps you would try it out? You can also set opening speeds etc.

And since they prototype phones for a while before market release and they release info about it months ahead it would only make sense that a new phone won't always be the latest and greatest.
I digress...what's your point about the hardware being old? No one claimed latest and greatest or the best..

Pretty simple. I said as long as you use similar ROMs/software, performance should be pretty equal since they (the Nexus One and the EVO) used the same hardware. Someone then mentioned that the Nexus One was older, I just re-emphasized what I said earlier. Still on topic IMO.
Here's a logical, on-topic for response for you OP, since I think that's what you were expecting in the first place:
The Evo will stutter when using the 3D app drawer because whatever launcher you are using is using high-quality icons for the display.. It's not sense, it's not the N1, it's not the hardware. I've always wondered why cyanogen configured adw to show a lot more icons on screen thus slowing down the animations.
Do this: Download LauncherPro, go to its Preferences, Advanced Settings and make sure "High quality scrolling" is off and "Use 3D drawer" is on. You'll notice it's just as smooth.
The evo just isn't optimized out of the box for it. That's all.

Lag? - yes. Going from an app like Angry birds to home screen, there's an initial lag. It's annoying. Must be Blurrrrr.

Confirmed that with proper account provisioning, unlimited 4G data for $30, and the "phone" apn, upload is either capped by AT&T or HSUPA is disabled on the hardware by AT&T. Tethering plan may increase upload speed but I got no confirmation in this yet.
Otherwise it's an excellent upgrade from the N1.

Should note that if you look at the reviews out there, the N1 battery life is crap (compared to the Atrix). Also the Atrix (like most newer Android phones) has a proper multitouch screeen. So you'll notice way better typing input immediately.
I will admit.... it's nice that nucentury is at least starting to use SOME punctuation. Not enough, but it's still an improvement from the first post i've seen from him in his other thread.
Besides.... who would even take the advice of someone who thinks that a gyroscope makes a phone that much better than any other device when it comes to gaming? A gyroscope has the same exact flaw as Microsoft Kinect. It's only logical to be used for a certain genre of games. Anything outside those genres, and it's just a useless addition to the phone.
Everything for me is great thus far. Phone is very snappy using LauncherPro also using Beautiful widgets.
Typing is spot on. Nice screen resolution. I would say the phone is overall faster than the Captivate and Inspire.

yeah I love this phone very fast with scrolling no lag, switching apps super fast, the screen is excellent, I really like the power but/finger print reader works flawless, battery life is good, I did a bench mark test and had 2691

Thanks for the reply! LauncherPro has become essential, it's good to know it enhances the Android experience here too.

Quad-core, 1GB ram + jellybean & widget menu lags everytime

Is this real life? Can't Samsung allocate some ram for it and cache it so I doesn't lag on start up everytime?
Isn't JB still unofficial?
Yes jellybean is still unofficial, but I still get this On ics
I just find it weird that I can play nova 3 flawlessly yet lag in the widgets menu. Samsung need to fix this.
Wait for official Jellybean.

Aye. The widgets menu always lags. It's pretty annoying that a quad-core phone with 1GB of RAM can't handle such a simple task.
I think samsung forgot to include "Project Butter" for jelly bean s3
Seriously... What's wrong with this phone? It's really is a huge disappointment isn't it. My old s2 way out performs this thing. I bet even the huawei accend performs better. Prob worth replacing this with it! Doesn't it have 2gb of ram too?

Don't think smoothness is their highest priority right now, but to work out all of the bugs. They'll work on smoothing it out after it has been released. That's at least how they've always done it, not that their original firmwares haven't always been smooth, but they are almost always a lot better when they mature. The original firmwares for the SGS2 were really slow, but Samsung managed to improve the performance by a lot in later firmwares and the same goes for the SGS3.

If you are dissapointed then you don't use your phone as it is ment to... sad to say!
For me SG3 is WAY better than SG2, it runs well, it's smooth as hell, impresive battery, great gaming and screen... OH! But it lags when entring Widgets menu, a menu I hardly touch on the first day I configure my phone or maybe if I install some new app!
But hey, it's worth throwing it to the bin because of it, who wants a laggy widget menú?
Omfg I'm hardly impressed some times in here...

I agree wtf is the widget draw lagging for ' you'd think they'd alacate a touch of ram for some kind of stay in memory script like apex launcher does for launcher its simple really but Samsung devs suck [email protected] at common sense' hopefully they'll pull there finger out on official jb and nullify the (error) before a custom rom Dev writes a script to fix the issue and maybe they'll fix the grey cloud issue on lock screen with there much hyped ripple effect using black wallpapers ' this phone should not lagg, jerk, stutter or redraw period, p.s I luv my nearly perfect s3 rant over

I can compromise on smoothness because I know custom kernals and custom roms will handle that job pretty fine. All I want now is the bugs to be fixed, esp fc bugs.

Zero lag. Brighter screen. More available ram. Better audio in video recorder app.

S3 has a better quality screen, mine has zero lag and as of right now this is how my ram looks.
Audio is fixed in the JB leaks.

I don't think the way you do about your comment. I do agree with him about what he said that the s2 runs better because I actually compared them both and the s2 runs faster and smoother. Also it is useless when you say "it runs well, its smooth as hell..." when you are trying to justify a comparison.. The s3 does run well, and it is smooth (well not really) but comparing it to the s2 we get the s2 as a winner. Try looking at the ram usage for the s3 and the s2, the s3 is almost always locked at 470+ and maximum is 780, the s2 with recently cleared memory has 200 mbs of ram used, and can reach up to 800.
So don't attack him just because you are too self righteous about your opinion. He has a point.
Android isn't really optimised for muli-core, only one can be used at any time. The SII runs better as it's lighter with less bloatware, don't buy a phone purely for the fact it has great specs because until Android can fully utilise all 4 cores you're no better off than someone who has 2.
