[Q]How to change ip address? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi all ¡
I want to cheat on some competition - I must change my IP on my A500 to vote on me at web poll at android-fan.pl/ ( I want to vote on my project which is Lady GaGa made in androidify app). Or is it easier way to get more votes? I'm 4th and I need to be in top 3. Maybe you can vote for me? (the poll is on the right side)

Lol your local machine IP has nothing to do with your internet IP - you can always try rebooting/resetting your cable /DSL / whatever you are using, chances are your ISP assigns IP addys dynamically so a reset may (or may not) give you a different IP.
Also, on a side note - it's usually pretty obvious to anyone with access to the system logs that you cheated. Even if you vote from another IP, if I was running the contest the logs would look super fishy to me.

Idk take ur modem take a pen hold the reset btton for 30 secs ? I do that when i watch movies and its only 70 min limited lol

Skype video for Xoom/3.1?

I find it insanely ridiculous that this Skype update didn't bring Video calling to the Xoom ( hell, not even to the Thunderbolt). Is there anybody working on a customized apk to have video calling work on the Xoom( unrooted, just install the apk no mods or anything). Link to a thread? Thanks
Sent from my Nexus S
glad you asked as I want to know the answer too
I am sure I saw a tweet about a modified version which worked on Thunderbolt..
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/04/11/download-skype-with-video-chat-for-the-htc-thunderbolt/
that's what I saw I think - any idea if that works?

Not sure, I did see an apk for other devices (Sensation, Samsung Galaxy S 2, etc) but none for Xoom. Anyone have a clue if this has worked for Xoom?
Sent from my Nexus S
I find it ridicuolous that they couldn't release support more phones and devices. Can someone post the apk?
Here you could find modified apk that works with other devices. I tried to install it on the XOOM, but I couldn't pass registration page. It's just return you to main screen without any feedback.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1148708
DEVs please modify it that we could use it on our XOOM tables.
Anyone here working on it?

Guys I got a Skype update for my Transformer via Android Market and it sort of looks like a tablet app. High resolution graphics and stuff, you know. Also, it mentioned video calling on start up, I think - but I couldn't figure out how to use it. This is definately coming, give it a few more days
Skype almost worked
I downloaded and installed Skype awhile ago and was able to create an account but then it said it was unable to connect me to the network
Dunno why it wouldn't connect to my wi-fi network ... but it was exciting for a few minutes when it looked like it was going to work. After creating an account it went into connecting mode and until the error message popped up about not being able to connect it looked like it was going to work.
So close ... it almost made it. Perhaps it would work for someone on Verizon.
So far the only device added to the list of compatible devices is the Nexus S 4g. Not a single tablet.

Skype with video chat for the thunderbolt was leaked like 3 months ago. I'm surprised it wasnt released during the official launch especially since the Thunderbolt was the first device skype with video was supposed to launch on.
Yeah I find this all very weird. Who knows, they did stop making Skype a Verizon exclusive... maybe that's why
Sent from my HTC Dream
Well Verizon just unloaded that turkey to Microsoft. It's their problem now. Lol.

I think what's obvious is that the skype video is basically a hack and not like google talk video since its so phone specific

Be aware that Skype is based upon a distributed network. This means that when you are connected to Skype your computer is part of their network and can/will be used to connect other users together without asking your permission.
Quite possibly phones and tablets are less than ideal mechanisms to be integral parts of their sharing network.
I have uninstalled Skype from my computers to prevent this indiscriminate use.

Not quite accurate. Skype has a distributed network of supernodes, true. It is also true that supernodes are regular skype clients (much as bit torrent and other p2p networks are). It is not true that all clients are supernodes. Only clients on public addresses not behind a proxy are eligible as supernodes. Android clients are not eligible (skype does not have root privileges and can not open a port on 80 and 443), nor are clients behind a NAT.
Feel free to not use the service, but do not do so based on a misunderstanding out how skype works.
EDIT: explained in greater detail why android in specific can not act as a supernode. (Discounting the fact that supernodes are chosen based on cpu power and bandwidth, making its selection unlikely even if it were possible.)

How do you know for sure that your account was hacked by an app from the market? Did you report it?
I got into an argument with a dumb ***** at Best Buy mobile last weekend, she was telling someone about Norton security for Android, they had it in the display, she said that because Android is "more open " it is more susceptible to viruses. She tried to tell me that people come in there all the time with viruses on their phones. I told her flat out, that pretty much the only way to get viruses on an Android is by downloading pirated apps. So they get what they deserve.

Used free IPv6Config app from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=to.doc.android.ipv6config&hl=en I set it for every boot and also enabled address privacy to prevent mac address from being displayed/shown. To confirm I used Network Info II https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEwOSwiYXdzLmFwcHMubmV0d29ya0luZm9JaSJd

Wth is IPV6?
sent from 2yr old Evo on ICS
Its an address or telephone #, but to devices that connect to the Internet severs basically they connect to each other.
It has 128 bits of address space, translating that its 3.4 x 10 to the 38th addresses well its 340,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 thats trillions trillions trillions of addresses.

no IP address.. no internet connectivity for any device.
Very few IP addresses left in IPv4 space so v6 (IPng) was first thought about in the early 90's and just now being implemented by some.
2nd link I posted in OP explains it all in simple terms.
I still find it sad that the U.S. is lagging behind. Guess the amount of $$ most ISPs (internet service providers) and others are willing to spend will cut into their profits.
This move will also cost the home consumer as a lot of routers, network switches, cable/dsl modems, gateways, tvs, refrigerators, blu ray players, set top tv boxes, game devices, smart phones, wifi devices and even older operating systems and some software are not fully IPv6 compatible.
I must say from everything I am seeing this excludes Comcast as they seem to be the only ISP who is willing to make the move and have been working on it for over 7yrs.
I personally have Charter and they seemed to take it as joke and laughed when I inquired about IPv6.

[Q]Is changing the MAC possible on nexus 7?

Hello,
Its my first post (been watching the forum for a while), so i would like to say hello.
This month (as asus claims) the nexus 7 is arriving in my country. If it doesn't i'm willing to buy one in the UK.
Because of that i would like to ask a question to the owners of that device:
is changing the MAC address possible as stated in this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385577
Would anyone be willing to check that?
Or is there any other method i don't know?
And confirm that when you change the mac it appears in the router settings (connects to the network with the changed one)?
I would like to know that because WiFi in my school is limited to two devices, checked by MAC. I have already registered a phone and a laptop.
Greetings,
mlawnikPL
You could change the Mac address.

If you read through all the post on the topic you linked to you... you will notice that it is a Hit or Miss type of thing.
Meaning you might get it working, or you might not. Or you might get it working once, or the next time you try it will fail.
The method listed on that Topic is not a permanent solutions.. once your tablet/phone is reset/powered off the MAC will go back to the original.
Since its the hardware (the WiFi Card inside the device) that has the MAC address store in it.. and it clearly states in the that Topic you are "Spoofing" a MAC address.
Try something like Connectify ( http://www.connectify.me/ ) - you will need a Windows7 laptop/PC though.
Then you can connect all the devices you want..
Or un-register your phone, and register the tablet.. More than likely you will use the Table more often anyways, and your phone has a 3G/4G connection already.
Or wait and see if the 3G Nexus 7 hits your country... Or Order one from a US (or whatever country they are released to) and have it shipped to you.

This is an interesting scenario and yes it works
Keep in mind that you can't have two devices with same MAC address on the same LAN
With the MAC filter policy, you could either clone your either of the devices you have or, use a Bluetooth connectivity between your android phone and nexus 7 or some form of tethering

Yes, I forgot the Bluetooth option... connect to phone to your schools WiFi, the use a Bluetooth tether app to share connections...
Like hayodee said, spoofing a MAC won't allow you to connect all three device...
My question, why are you not trying this "spoofing" yourself..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I am not trying this method because I don't have my N7 yet.
And I would not connect all three devices at once but one day I might take just phone and the other a tablet and a laptop, so then I would spoof the phone Mac...

[Q] Android VPN

I'm wanting to use a VPN to mask my browsing when in public/using free wi-fi/at work/etc. I'm fine with setting it up on my home PC (I was originally going to use Hamachi/Privoxy but I don't think Hamachi is supported on Android) or even paying a small fee but I'm not going to be torrenting or accessing any secure information so I don't care about VPN logging/DMCA issues/etc.
I saw Android has a built-in VPN client. Is that any good? I also noticed "Rooted AnyConnect" (yes I'm rooted, running AOSP+ 4.2.1) on the Play Store. What about that?
Thanks in advance!

For what you want to accomplish, you should consider purchasing a subscription to a personal VPN provider such as Witopia or PureVPN. Android's built-in VPN functionality will directly support most protocols such as PPTP and L2TP/IPsec.

Probably the most secure of anything free and maybe even the paid ones as well, speed isnt terrible either. I get 1.5mb/s down and 2mb/s up when routing all data in and out of my phone through this.

Anything that is properly secure will not get you above a few mb/s in speed, unless you want to pay huge amounts per month. If you want to be secure then that is the price you must pay. If you want better speed then you shouldnt even bother wasting your money on services that still let anyone track you with the smallest amount of effort put towards the matter. here is a list of the only worthwhile providers there are:

somehow many of these VPN are not working ie. NORD.
As far as VPN choice is concerned. First you have to decide. whether you want a better experience or you just want a cheap one.
I personally go for better experience approach. because slow speed and advertisement is way too troublesome.
For vpn suggestion you can go and visit

NordVPN works fine for me, your link however does not. VPN is about security an anonymity, the "experience" as you say can have a little bit to do with speed, but also ease of use and if you are even secure at all. A proper VPN is one that does not keep records of any kind on you, most VPN services do. This means that no matter how much you are paying, and no matter how fast of speeds you get through the VPN, you are doing nothing but paying money to someone pointlessly. The first thing to decide about using a VPN is: "Do I want to be secure and anonymous online", the second question is: "how much speed am I willing to pay for". Those are the only two questions of any relevance when dealing with a VPN. DO yourself a favor and actually research whatever company you are considering, because if they keep logs on you or are in a country that is required to comply with any little request from your government then that company is completely pointless to use.

Thank you for pointing out.
Nordpvn is working now. It actually emailed and asked about the problem, and they said that they were migrating their server. ie on Thursday from 11 am to 1 pm (+5 GMT) that is when i tried connecting to their website. Yes, i am concerned about the log issues, because you are absolutely right that there is no point if your privacy is compromised for whatsoever reason. But here is the thing we are not sure if they actually dont maintain any user log. That is another story.
I was thinking to go for PureVPN. I did some research, read blogs and I think it will cater my needs for what I am willing to pay for.
Free VPN are not the solution
