So now that we can finally root the DX on the Gingerbread OTA, do the ROMs for the patched Gingerbread work on the OTA? Or do we need to wait for new ones?

The patched Gingerbread should basically be the same thing. Roms should work just fine.

You use ODIN to revert to stock using ODIN the froyo odin files will probably get upped right after the update starts pushing. If your used to a custom rom I'd just wait a few hours after the release and devs will have custom roms based off of it
Thank you. Do I still do a complete odin wipe with custom a 2.2 rom?

Its normally good practice

Totally agree. Once Froyo released the ROM will start coming in. Right now the guys in here are knid enough to make 3 or 4 2.1 ROMs for their own (and our) enjoyment. But as soon as 2.2 releases ROM dev for this phone will get a bigger push.
sleepy8594 , just wait about 60 days or so and you should be pleased with your options.
Appreciated, thank you for the help.

Okay, one question along those same lines.
I'm rooted but using a stock rom. Do I accept the OTA update or do I wait?
Personally I would wait *in case* out root exploit is closed.

It would probably take more than just a few hours since Android 2.2 is based off a newer kernel version.

i would prolly reflash my stock rooted (but can unroot) rom i nandroided
So obviously the GB OTA update for the DX is coming soon. But my question is that im on stock 2.2 but i AM rooted. So will being rooted block the OTA update when it is finally pushed?
thanks
In past DX updates it has not blocked it, but you would have to re-root. I am not sure about the next update but I assume it will be similar

did u use z4? if so I just unrooted & did the manual update & everything was fine

funny u asked I tried this morning w/no luck, running full stock now which will b ok till I get the mod bug back lol hopefully we'll get another app like it 2 root gingerbread soon
sent from the DX
To get root you need to use the zip files that p3droid posted and install from froyo. And yes you can sbf back
Sorry if this has been answered before (I didn't mess with any leaked GB and scanned the other threads). Is z4root compatible with GB or does some other rooting method exists for GB? I'm going to hold off on doing the GB OTA update on my X if rooting it is not yet possible. Thanks.
We can use Gingerbreak to root gingerbread, but I'm not positive that it will work on the .596 update.

Gingerbreak roots gingerbread, however it will not work on the OTA
Fair warning from P3Droid, you might permanently lose root if you accept the GB OTA. They haven't found a way to root it yet. Excellent chance that they will, but no guarantees.

Thanks. Not willing to give up root so I'm going to wait until it's confirmed as possible.

Stay on the leaked. 595 until we know that nothing is wrong, then manually download (or accept the ota of) the. 596.

Not all HTC devices. Just the upcoming ones and not any that were already coming out
Im not understanding why there is a distinction between the two. I thought you could not have ROMS and Root on 2.3? If you flash a 2.3 ROM do you then lose your root access and have to downgrade all over again to get 2.2/root and try a new ROM?

If your on stock 2.3 you have to downgrade to 2.2 in order to root your phone yes. That's only because the root exploit used exists in 2.2 and not 2.3. But once rooted, you can flash a 2.3 ROM and you will not lose root. You would only lose root if you RUU back to stock. The ROMs listed in android development have root capabilities/superuser built in. So once your rooted and have recovery setup, go ahead and flash any of those ROMs (like supreme sense, cm7, miui, ect) without worrying about losing root.

so once your 2.2 rooted, can you take the OTA 2.3 update and still retain root or is the only way to get 2.3 back and stay rooted is via a ROM?

If you take the update it will break root. You'll need to flash a Gingerbread ROM. X99 has a ROM that is basically a rooted version of the ota. General rule of thumb, don't accept updates unless you want risk breaking root

cool thanks thats what i figured, nice to get that confirmed.
I just had a shift 2.3.3 and spent a day or so bringing it back to 2.2 with root and the clockwork boot manager.
But how do i get a 2.3.3 or newer ota or as close to factory rom as possible to work with root?
I saw a rom called synergy which looks similar.
Sparksco has a rooted ota ROM in ROM manager 2.3.4
mik 2.1 executive edition

If your going for the stock look NewSENSE is where its at, and thats the actual rom im running on my speedy now

If you want the newest OTA 2.3.4 just rooted. Then Sparksco has the newest Rom in Rom Manager, as turkbot stated. Although if you go that route you will not have WiFi / USB Tether. You will just be on the Newest OTA 2.3.4 and Rooted. If you want a Rom that's based off the newest OTA but very close to Stock. Then newSense is what you want. Very close to Stock with extras, and very reliable. MikShifted G , not Stock. Many extras, and very reliable.
