Sorry if this has been answered before (I didn't mess with any leaked GB and scanned the other threads). Is z4root compatible with GB or does some other rooting method exists for GB? I'm going to hold off on doing the GB OTA update on my X if rooting it is not yet possible. Thanks.
We can use Gingerbreak to root gingerbread, but I'm not positive that it will work on the .596 update.

Gingerbreak roots gingerbread, however it will not work on the OTA
Fair warning from P3Droid, you might permanently lose root if you accept the GB OTA. They haven't found a way to root it yet. Excellent chance that they will, but no guarantees.

Thanks. Not willing to give up root so I'm going to wait until it's confirmed as possible.

Stay on the leaked. 595 until we know that nothing is wrong, then manually download (or accept the ota of) the. 596.

Not all HTC devices. Just the upcoming ones and not any that were already coming out

TBH is in the process of right now releasing a leaked Moto build of Gingerbread 2.3.3. As of right now, they have been unable to root it, as all known root methods appear to no longer work. Anyone want to tackle it?
obviously not gonna be easy....if TBH can't do it.. I doubt anyone can
Don't think anything is impossible. They just got the release yesterday. It sometimes takes a collaboration of several devs to get root.
If my download ever finishes I gonna try like hello and throw everything I have at it. Lol.

i have an idea about getting root but im not sure if it will work or not but pretty much instead of rebooting after installing 2.3.3 you install the su.zip file found somewhere on xda and you should have root but im not 100% sure

That will soft-brick the phone and you'll have to SBF from RSDLite. You can't install any other zips directly after installing a ROM or it won't pass the signature verification on reboot.

Locked bootloader and root access are two different things.
tried SuperOneClick(special), same process for 3.4.2 blur..no go.

well the nexus s/one use a method which requires the bootloader to be unlocked in order to obtain root so technically speaking they are the same in this case
so far though i have been reading about a gingerbreak exploit from the same guy who released rageinthecage exploit
maybe if we contacted him he might release gingerbreak so we can have root access
that sucks

Search the market for "Superuser" and there is an app that has comments stating it worked for GB on N1.
I downloaded it and ran it and it seemed to have done the first part of what it needed to do fine... but now the next step is flash this .zip update that is on the memory card through recovery...... I don't want to be the genea pig as I need my phone atm...
EDIT: Just read luigi's post.. not sure now...

So obviously the GB OTA update for the DX is coming soon. But my question is that im on stock 2.2 but i AM rooted. So will being rooted block the OTA update when it is finally pushed?
thanks
In past DX updates it has not blocked it, but you would have to re-root. I am not sure about the next update but I assume it will be similar

My Atrix 4g is rooted on 4.1.57 and I am not seeing the latest 1.8.3 update. help!
Me either. I'm pretty sure its not because of root though since others with root have gotten the update
Thats what I was wondering. I was able to update with the root last time, I don't see why this would be different
So we need to unroot and then update ?
And then root 1.8.3 with Gingerbreak?
Nothing should effect your ability to see it. If you have one of the pseudo roms installed, that will prevent you from installing it, however.
I don't think we need to un-root to see the update - that really shouldn't effect anything. Once we get to 1.8.3 GingerBreak will root it fine, the issue is just getting to that point via OTA Update which we aren't seeing
no root here and I'm still not seeing it yet.
1.8.3 isn't live yet FFS. So much damn misinformation floating around.

Rolling out doesn't mean live for everyone. Also, this update isn't official until ken releases Gingerblur 3.0 anyway, since the stock experience is pretty much a joke.
Is GingerBlur the best rom? // easy to install/update?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Just flash the sbf it doesn't wipe any data of course im not running any mods or "roms" other than root. It did get rid of root though and running gingerRoot wiped my internal storage (like it said it would), but i backed that up no harm ;-)
So my area in NC is not "live" yet it seems.
Not live in Philadelphia either
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
The patch isn't live yet folks! It's still being pushed out in testing.
I believe it's not root, but deodexed files which cause issues with updating. People with root have managed to update, but people like me who had GreyBlur had to flash back to 4.1.26, update to 4.1.57, update to 4.1.83, then root and sideload again. Also, before rooting, it's adviseable to use Kennethpenn's deodex flash for 4.1.83 first.
rooted, running gingerblur 2.5.. no update available yet here in south Florida. not too concerned about it though.. i did the HUSPA mod & i'm content for now
So I got the official GingerBread OTA (Build 596) last night but I can't root it using gingerbreak and I use my phone to tether wirelessly on my tablet all day.

I'm in the same boat as you. (got a replacement phone today and the wife updated it before I got home) I assumed there would be a simple way to root after the OTA but it looks like for now that isn't the case. I'm just going to wait a few days and see what happens.
Luckily .596 uses the same boot loader as froyo .340 so you can simply sbf the phone back to .340 then reroot and update to the prerooted .596 that p3droid posted on mdw.
SBF and root. Then you can flash the rooted version. Pm me if you need instructions on how to SBF.
Tethering using the official app costs money but there are other tethering apps
Oh ok, so like where can i find the other apps, n are they free? Also my phone was rooted n i was runnin the stock rom but i just sbf'd the fone and updated to 2.3 ota, can i still root my fone with the z4root? Or do i have to wait for something else?

Hello XDA
I recently updated my phone through Verizon to
Android Version 2.3.3
System Verion 4.5.596
Before I was interested in rooting. I have been researching and tried everything I could find to root this version
but nothing has worked. (gingerbreak, z4root, easyroot, ect.) I did a factory reset/system wipe.
(still 2.3.3 - 4.5.596 on reset)
Am I doing something wrong? Should this version be rooting with GingerBreak or another root program?
(They all are stuck on loading screens never finish or reboot)
or (from what I have read) do I need to rollback to an earlier version to be able to load the 'prerooted'
gingerbread OS?
I am fairly new to this, and am sorry for my ignorance. If it is out there somewhere a link would safice
but as of now I haven't been able to find anything dealing directly with my situation. Thank you for any
and all help.
-Laskowsky
There's no rooting method through stock 2.3.3 yet
you're gonna have to SBF back to stock .340 and flash p3droid's OTA rooted gingerbread ROM
Ok, I was hoping there was a simplier way but expected that for the most part from what I had read. Thank you.
Rooting my Stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Droid X
I don't want to sound redundant to skate 72w but I have searched the forums up and down.. Is there any other one-click way to root my stock GB 4.5.596 droid x? I found this article
I do not see where it talks about the 4.5.596...
If not, can someone please direct me in the right way to get froyo back so I can have my wireless tether back!
Thanks,
-Nick

p3 tends to 'find' things that other folks don't have. He has a rooted .596 but it's achieved through flashing. He has not announced a way to root the OTA, and I think he would do so if he had one.
Everyone questions p3droids methods.
If you want to root: do some searching here.

Is the sticky still there?
I would consider myself to be a noob when it comes to rooting, all i want it for is the wireless tethering. I have done an sbf once but dont feel very good about doing it again, and am just looking for another one click method to rooting like z4root. I am running on gingerbread 4.5.596 from verizon.
OTA Root
I love my Droid X - hate the VZ CRAPWARE.
I now have the 4.5.596 (2.3.3) OTA update.
The only update method to obtain root is to SBF to Froyo - Root - and install the TBH/P3 Droid pre-rooted update.
At this point, I have too many apps installed and too many settings to reconfigure to take the route.
My main goal is to obtain root (such as a Z4 root style one click) so that I can maintain all my apps and configurations. Once I root, then I can freeze all the VZ Crap (every Google Maps update requires me to choose between GM and VZ Navigator the first time 1 click an address, and having to choose the contacts database EVERY TIME to Google is a PITA - Backup Assistant should be something I can DISABLE).
Sorry for the rant - to the point - does anyone know if ongoing efforts are being made to create a one-click Root for the Droid X? (Or a multi step that preserves data / apps / and settings)

guess what sucks about rooting leaks is that it gives the vendors the holes to repair.. if we didnt root the latest.. the ota probably would probably be rootable.
