Samsung Galaxy S II not coming to Verizon - Fascinate General

So according to this article the Galaxy S II is not going to be a Verizon phone.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/25/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-not-coming-to-verizon-after-all/

So.
good day.

http://www.bgr.com/2011/08/25/exclu...-ii-but-similar-samsung-phone-launching-soon/
Nope, but Verizon is getting a sister phone that is basically identical.
In reality, Verizon was out due to other changes it wanted. Now it will have a nearly identical phone with its other changes. Meaning it will be potentially all screwed up with software.
I will probably skip it and go with an HTC model this holiday.

Nexus Prime + Stratosphere instead

Verizon will get a Galaxy S II-ish phone with Verizon bloatware some time before November.

Ah bloatware.....who needs it.

I bought the Fascinate because it had a large, good looking screen, was thin & light weight, had a fast processor (for the time), had a replaceable SD card and ran Android. I don't care what it's called, those are probably the things I'll look for again. Hopefully, a dual core with better battery life.
There is a Stratosphere that is supposed to be released next month.

By the time all of our contracts end and we can get new phones there will be things much better than the SII to look at.

Oh, do you have to swap numbers to do that?

There was a news report in Korea that according to samsung insider when samsung showed seven phones including sgs2 to verizon, they choose other phone not sgs2. So let me guess. Celox is coming out on September in Korea. It has almost same spec like sgs2 also branded as galaxy series and most of all it has lte modem. I just hope that would be IT.

no, it's tied to like the hardware or something. not exactly sure, it was just when I wanted a new phone I went in with my mom and asked if I could use her upgrade. it was no problem.

I'm curious what would draw you to the SGS II on Verizon? It makes sense for other carriers since Samsung gave GSM versions to the CM team. For me for the time being I would have to get a Nexus device or something that could be well supported by CM i.e. reasonable source to work from.

One down...two left to choose from..bonics or iPhone 5

Awesome, I was gonna do this as well, except for the iPhone 5, the SII was the only other phone I was interested in, hearing it not coming pretty much locks me to the iPhone.
Question, would I still keep my unlimited data plan if I switched her upgrade (iPhone 5) to my number and swap my Fascinate and get her a tiered plan?

You will keep unlimited data if your upgrading from smartphone to smartphone. It does not matter wich line upgrade you use... If you switch to a non smartphone then you loose unlimited data, and thats the only way it can be lost.

Upcoming Sumsung Phone on Verizon

I know some people have been turned off from the lack of updates from Samsung/Verizon or whatever. (I blame Bing)
Unlike other people, after owning the Fascinate.. I actually would love to buy another Samsung phone.
I can't give up the SAMOLED screen. I actually like the over-saturated colors. They give it a POP in comparison to other screens.
What's next.... Samsung Droid Charge... meh.... Not sure why this has no appeal to me? Anyone else feel the same?
However, the Galaxy S 2, I'm completely drooling over this phone....Anyone think the Galaxy S 2 would come to VZW - or the US... ?

credit card = no contract lol, normally buy a phone then sell old to help make up difference, but sgs2 will be my next phone for sure. updates are not the selling factor for me the hardware is and I own a lot of sammy products and they have always been top-notch

There is always Certified Pre-Owned as well. This phone was an upgrade for me from the OG Droid 1 and it costed me 49 bucks. Best 50 I've ever spent. So hopefully by the time my contract expires I'm hoping CPO Galaxy S 2's will be available.

WHOA. I had no idea it was that close to release, I thought it would come out in September at the earliest. Geez, I wonder if I Verizon will let me trade in my Fascinate for it, and I just pay whatever difference there is. My phone sound quality sucks, the GPS is a mixed bag, and I can complain about them not pushing Froyo to their phone yet (yes, I do currently have a Froyo rom on my phone, but it's still a legitimate complaint since it's a leak I have running). I really really want the new Galaxy S II. Worst case scenario, I'll have to find some way of getting the money to purchase it for full-price off contract.
According to a leaked Verizon roadmap, the SGS2 may arrive as early as next month on Verizon(with LTE!):
"Verizon’s spring roadmap has 8 Android phones releasing in less than 60 days"
I am sorry, but that Road Map is fake (I hope I'm wrong). I would LOVE the S2 to come out next month... but... I'd look for it by the end of the summer. The only question is, will it be the actual S2, or an altered step child like the Fascinate to the Original Galaxy S?
We should make a list for upcoming non-Samsung phones.

I know I definitely plan on making the S2 my next phone. I'm with the OP in that I'm not at the least turned off by Samsung. I blame Verizon. I've been through this before with the OG Storm. Yes, Rim was responsible for some hardware issues but in the software realm, Verizon sucked in releasing timely firmware to fix software glitches. I had to rely upon the BB community in order to get my phone up to snuff. If Verizon didn't have such a large and reliable network, I'd leave them.

Nexus S 4G or wait for Galaxy Nexus?

I'm on Sprint and ready to upgrade my Hero. The problem though is that the Hero has left me very hesitant to buy a phone with a custom skin, and I will not spend my money on a non-stock Android phone. Is the Nexus S 4G still a good phone compared to current dual core phones or should I just wait until Sprint gets the Galaxy Nexus?
I went from the hero to the NS4G when they had them for $30 after rebate and such, and I don't regret it at all. Even running stock it blows the hero away. Could that perception change over the next 2 years? Sure, but after dealing with the hero being pretty inadequate from the get go I doubt that it will be anything I can't deal with. The only complaint i have found is that the external speaker volume is about half of the hero. I can't pay ~$200+ for a phone any more.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G running CM7/franco.Kernel
Depends on the amount of money you want to spend. The NS4G is a fine phone and I enjoy it and like dpeeps the only complaint I would have is the speaker on it. I like to listen to podcast on my phone, when I'm at home I still listen to em on the Hero, I pretty much use the Hero it as a iPod/MP3Player type device now.
I had to make this same decision back in August and am so happy that I did. There will always be faster, prettier, better...etc. phones coming out so you just have to accept that. I haven't ran into 1 problem yet with my Nexus and I'm not leaving Sprint so for me it's the best phone they had and still have available. I'll upgrade once they get their LTE system in place and phones to work on it.
Good to hear that it is still a very capable phone! I was planning on buying it used off of Craigslist or eBay so that I can save my upgrade for the Galaxy Nexus, if Sprint gets it. I remember when the NS4G came out that a lot of people were complaining about the reception on it and I was wondering if it had ever gotten fixed or if it was ever a real problem to begin with.
Quad Core phones should be coming by springtime. LTE or not, that's what I'm waiting to jump on

I also have a Hero and I'm ready to upgrade. I'll also be getting a Nexus S, but I'm waiting until Friday because it's going to be free! I can't post links because I lurk a lot, but if you check out phandroid's Hero news (or sprintfeed.com, where they got the article from), Sprint is giving away Nexus S' on Black Friday.

Seems for some people it really was an issue, supposedly a update fixed it, I was one of the ones that never had any reception issue so can't say.
ns4g is already really outdated in todays mobile market
spending a few hundred bucks for a phone your going to use for maybe a month or 2 seems a little ridiculous.
you should save the money.
and if i were you i wouldnt wait for the galaxy nexus on sprint, i would jump ship to another carrier like im planning on doing. (with sprint for 9 years now)
sprint reception is getting worse and worse, their data speeds are getting slower and slower
just yesterday we had major problems, couldnt make or recieve calls or send texts.
i would highly consider switching carriers.
that being said if you want to stay on sprint the epic touch is a really amazing phone, held back by its carrier.
good luck
Outdated is probably a stretch. The phone is more than capable of handling anything a dual core phone can handle. I'm sure there's some few exceptions, but spending a few hundred bucks on anything that's as disposable as a mobile phone these days isn't too bright. Wait a couple months and they all become exponentially cheaper on some sale or rebate.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G running CM7/franco.Kernel
Well do you like huge phones?? The Galaxy Nexus is HUGE...Well if you absolutely need a new phone just now then get a Nexus S 4g. If you can wait a few months to see what comes out then the Galaxy Nexus will probably be worth the wait....
I was thinking about getting a nexus s too. But, does it bother anybody that it doesn't have a notification LED? I hadn't heard about the speakers.

How does this allow you to save your upgrade? Will Sprint do an ESN swap from the Hero onto the Nexus and keep you on your existing contract? I too am interested in saving my upgrade until the new LTE network is in place, but would love a new(er) phone in the meantime.

Sprint makes it easy to swap really... Just log into the sprint website and find the option in there. It asks for the numbers located on the back of the phone under the battery and then transfers your service to the new phone. Your old one should still have a clean ESN and be good to sell. My family has gone the eBay route a few times now to save our upgrades.
And really to anyone talking about only going for pure stock Android phones or waiting for the galaxy nexus, your missing out lol... Take 5 minutes on a 1ghz phone with Sense and you'll be hooked. The Hero just didn't have the power to handle it. And the Galaxy Nexus is really kind of a letdown tbh. In literally 3 months we'll see 2+ ghz quadcores and higher than 8 megapixel cameras as a bonus. And 4.0 ICS will be all over the place by then

Per chance do you know if this works with the old non-premium data plans? If I swap ESNs will they want to charge me the $10 a month "premium data" plan for a smartphone? I'm boycotting upgrading until this goes away. I mean my heroc does everything I need and we've almost got ICS there, I don't see a reason to upgrade. (Yes armv7/front camera/dual core/soon to be LTE would be nice but those aren't "necessities" imo)

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000

Yeah but who cares? AT&T versions are loaded with bloatware, they never have the phone in white (e.g. SG2), locked down, lack an FM radio and they remove the physical home button. Not worth getting an AT&T phone at all. Save up your pennies and buy an unlocked phone, it isn't that expensive.
I already bought the international version off contract. I'm not about to sign a contract just to get a crippled version of the device. I happen to like the physical Home button and lack of a search button; holding the Menu key has the same effect.
While there are bloatware/crapware issues and the 2 year lock in as clear disadvantages the fact that you can get a phone like the Note for $300 or more less than unlocked is a big plus for many. In addition, you have a much easier return location if you have a problem.
I almost picked up a Note last week but Newegg didn't have any in stock so I delayed my purchase. Given the issues some are reporting with the Note and the fact that any first of a kind phone is likely to have early issues I decided to hold off for a while.
One of my concerns with buying an imported phone is that you have no way of knowing if the phone they ship you was returned by someone else. This, perhaps more than anything else, is giving me pause about buying an imported model so soon after the phone is released.

The import G-note will most likely have a better look over the att G-note. I just spent $750 on a white G-note n I think it was a good deal. I sold my iphone 4s for $550 n my dell streak for $200. so I really only paid $217 (cost of upgrading to phone 4s) for my G-Note. I do miss the US warrenty n the support if I would have gotten from att. if I done my math right I over paid about $100 for my G-note. But I got a white G-note n 3 to 4 months less waiting.

Wow... some people are taking this kinda personally, lol.
I'm planning to root that sucker and use a custom ROM, plus I've got the grandfathered unlimited data, so I'm psyched AT&T will apparently be offering the Note.
To be honest, if you can flash it and there is good xda dev support, there is no reason not to get a subsidized phone. It's just nice if something goes wrong in the first year to be able to mail it in and get it replaced. I have a service center in town, so Ican just go swap it out.

What phone are you upgrading to?
Personally, unless the Galaxy S III is amazing, I will probably go with the Evo LTE. My upgrade is in Jan 13, so there may be cooler phones between now and then, but so far, I am leaning towards Evo LTE unless the nexus 4 is on sprint by then or the galaxy s iii is considerably better.

I'm still holding out for the galaxy note. If the note doesn't come to sprint, I'll get the S3.

I went into a Sprint Repair center a couple days ago to see if I was up for an upgrade. They said the Galaxy Note was coming to Sprint.
I'm not due for an upgrade till September. I want to see what's out then...but am thinking Galaxy Note.

Galaxy S3!! Rumor has it, Samsung is planning a iphone4s like release, where it will be available global at one time! So sprint should be getting it, at the same time as everyone else!
And GS3 WILL be amazing!

This + LTE. I'm willing to wait a while. Nothing I want to do right now the Epic can't handle. My complaints are all network related.
Is anyone else thinking about the evo lte?

I will probably jump to the AT&T note rather than waiting for sprint note. Part of it is that I want to be able to grab a pre-paid SIM when going to europe, which the Sprint version won't be able to do unless Sprint does something drastic. Part of it is that my company has a contract with AT&T for a 20% discount on plans, etc.

I'm in the exact same boat, the only thing that drew me to sprint is the unlimited data, however now that I work 50+ hours a week I think 2 gigs might be fine for me. (I normally burn through 8 lol)

I'm not sure.
I won't be on Sprint when my contract is up. They are ripping me the **** off.
So it depends on whether I go T-Mobile or Verizon.
I just got my Galaxy Nexus today! It's so beautiful and it couldn't have come at a better time since my Epic jumped (not literally) off my stove to the saltillo tile floor. I had just ordered this phone a couple hours before "The incident". I'm sure going to miss this community.

I think I'm getting ready to jump ship permanently from Sprint. I haven't had many problems with them, but their network is very inconsistent. I have unlimited data on AT&T and ordered the GSM Galaxy Nexus from the Play Store today for $399. That's hard to beat in my opinion. I might keep Sprint to see what happens with LTE, but only time will tell.
There's no sense for me to even consider which phone I'll upgrade to until I know when the LTE network is coming to my city. I'll also be evaluating how my performance on the network improves (if it all) due to Network Vision. If I didn't have such an unbelievable deal with Sprint I might have moved on long ago, but I hate the pay-through-the-nose, limited data plans on the other carriers.
An ideal scenario would be that in the fall, with LTE on here, and my contract up for renewal, the Sprint version of the GSIII comes out like the Epic, as the clear spec leader with all the trimmings including physical keyboard and a totally solid build quality. And no plan rate increases.

Now that I fixed my epic the evo lte is my upgrade plan also unless something with a keyboard comes around before I plan to upgrade

Hands down, a Note - there is no comparison of that device to any other. I've always appreciated convergence of technologies, and there is no better example today than a Note.
Sprint offers a lot which other carriers don't, but after a while you certainly miss what you really want, and that is a solid network, which Sprint isn't. The day the Note arrives on Verizon (hopefully as a world phone), I'm grabbing it regardless of the number of months left on my contract with Sprint.

i like the new evo but no sd card suxs. and gs3 is blow the evo out of the water. time with tell.

Should I get Sprint GS3?

Hi,
I was debating whether I should ask this question here or at Spring GS3 forum. I think asking here is more fitting.
I am wondering if I should stay with Sprint or not. I am honestly sick of slow data speed and delayed updates for CDMA phones.
But with wonderful dev magic shown here for our Epic4G, I think there won't be much software issues for GS3.
My alternative is Tmo's prepaid monthly4G for $30 per month. I really like the idea of owning GSM phone and getting unhindered updates from google. But there aren't any nexus phone that is better spec'ed then GS3. Also buying GS3 outright is pretty expensive, +$500.
So, if any of you guys switched to GS3, how are you guys? Any issues or regrets?
How is Sprint's data speed? I just found out from today's news that Sprint's gonna roll out LTE to LA, Boston and NYC area within months.
I just don't want to risk locking in 2 years with Sprint and be miserable...

Well, if you get the Galaxy Nexus, Sprint will offer you a free slim extended battery, it has official 4.1.1 now, and is only $50 for the upgrade at Radio Shack.

GS3 is a great phone, but unless you need a phone _right now_ would avoid locking yourself in contract until Sprint rolls out LTE in your area. Sprint 3G speed/coverage is very YMMV.

Yeah, my bad. The Verizon one is Free. But they are giving a $25 Newegg gift card on most and waiving the $36 activation fee on some too.

Galaxy Nexus is $19.99 with an upgrade from wireflyfriends.com. I'm definitely considering it. The lowest I can find the s3 with an upgrade is $149.99. If you ask me I don't think its worth it.

Glad I stopped by ive never even heard of wireflyfriends.com.....awesome I'm available for an upgrade and been wanting the nexus. Awesome deals they have here!
I'd never heard of the 'friends' site either. Just looked though and only certain people can apparently use the 'friends' site....it says Simplexity employees and their family & friends (hence the name basically). Wirefly itself though I was already well aware of.

To directly respond to the OP, regardless of what you decide on phonewise, if it were me, I'd definitely stick with Sprint, particularly if T-mo is the only alternative you're considering. Yeah, Sprint's speeds where NV hasn't hit yet suck, but if they stay on schedule, everything is supposed to be upgraded by the end of next year. And alot more is being done by the end of this year than I'd have imagined when I first heard of it a few months ago.

Well, I am in LA area so I kinda expect LTE to open soon...
But, T-mo prepaid already has HSPA+ working well in my area.
I am guaranteed at least 3mbps with Tmo HSPA+ for sure, and that is all I need.
I like their cheaper plan, but it is bummer to pay lump sum of ~$350 for a year old G-Nex or ~$600 for GS3...
I am hoping for a new nexus device, but no solid rumors about when it will be available... just speculations.
It might come next year, which is too much waiting for me...
If Sprint somehow offers me free GS3 I would stay, but I don't think Sprint can. So I am ready to walk out...
It comes down to if you want the fastest software updates or the best hardware available..
I went gs3 because the hardware is amazing.. and touchwiz really is nice on this thing.. its not like the epic where it just kind of makes things uglier.. it actually adds a lot of usable features on the gs3.. to the point where I would rather run a custom tw than aosp.
P.s. the screens bigger too!
