I know some people have been turned off from the lack of updates from Samsung/Verizon or whatever. (I blame Bing)
Unlike other people, after owning the Fascinate.. I actually would love to buy another Samsung phone.
I can't give up the SAMOLED screen. I actually like the over-saturated colors. They give it a POP in comparison to other screens.
What's next.... Samsung Droid Charge... meh.... Not sure why this has no appeal to me? Anyone else feel the same?
However, the Galaxy S 2, I'm completely drooling over this phone....Anyone think the Galaxy S 2 would come to VZW - or the US... ?

$299 WITH contract?!? The prices keep creeping higher and higher with a contract for new equipment. All it means is that I'll have to wait a little while longer (unfortunately). Prices always drop, new phones come, etc.
credit card = no contract lol, normally buy a phone then sell old to help make up difference, but sgs2 will be my next phone for sure. updates are not the selling factor for me the hardware is and I own a lot of sammy products and they have always been top-notch

There is always Certified Pre-Owned as well. This phone was an upgrade for me from the OG Droid 1 and it costed me 49 bucks. Best 50 I've ever spent. So hopefully by the time my contract expires I'm hoping CPO Galaxy S 2's will be available.

WHOA. I had no idea it was that close to release, I thought it would come out in September at the earliest. Geez, I wonder if I Verizon will let me trade in my Fascinate for it, and I just pay whatever difference there is. My phone sound quality sucks, the GPS is a mixed bag, and I can complain about them not pushing Froyo to their phone yet (yes, I do currently have a Froyo rom on my phone, but it's still a legitimate complaint since it's a leak I have running). I really really want the new Galaxy S II. Worst case scenario, I'll have to find some way of getting the money to purchase it for full-price off contract.
According to a leaked Verizon roadmap, the SGS2 may arrive as early as next month on Verizon(with LTE!):
"Verizon’s spring roadmap has 8 Android phones releasing in less than 60 days"
I am sorry, but that Road Map is fake (I hope I'm wrong). I would LOVE the S2 to come out next month... but... I'd look for it by the end of the summer. The only question is, will it be the actual S2, or an altered step child like the Fascinate to the Original Galaxy S?
We should make a list for upcoming non-Samsung phones.

that sucks that it's going to be lte. I don't even have it in my area, and by then I'm guessing the price of data plans will have gone up for 4g phones
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I know I definitely plan on making the S2 my next phone. I'm with the OP in that I'm not at the least turned off by Samsung. I blame Verizon. I've been through this before with the OG Storm. Yes, Rim was responsible for some hardware issues but in the software realm, Verizon sucked in releasing timely firmware to fix software glitches. I had to rely upon the BB community in order to get my phone up to snuff. If Verizon didn't have such a large and reliable network, I'd leave them.

Hello, anyone know where i would be able to hear about new phones for sprint?I already heard rumors about the sabor which is to high end to believe, but i wish the rumor was..anyways after the epic came out i feel like there is nothing about upcoming phones anymore.any help would be great thank you very much.
I have heard that the Samsung Galaxy tablets may make an appearance on sprint. I read it on Engadget... its seems they have an "in" with Sprint since they are a big sponsor. Believe it or not they can function as actual cell phones! I wouldn't want that on my face but it gives you a reason to use bluetooth. They have huge batteries which could give power users a reason to buy such a large device to use as a primary phone.

Thanx but any1 have anything on upcoming android 4g phones;i don't really like samsung
We know as much as everyone else. If someone did know, they'd be under contract and wouldn't be able to tell anyone.
i went to sprint today to buy a body glove case and got to play with the samsung epic and aside from the iphone ripoff theme the phone is lightning fast. holy **** that screen is crystal clear even in sunlight. i found out they are going to let me upgrade early in mid-october so i may get the epic. unless another android phone is announced.
So is there no other rumors on what new Sprint phones are coming this fall? Or early next year? I'm eligible for an upgrade tomorrow and wondered if I should wait. Of course as soon as I do some new mega phone will be released.

So they say the Galaxy S will sell 10,000,000 units be the end of this year. Let's just say they make $100 profit on each unit sold. That's what? $1,000,000,000. Now you're telling me that you can't even provide me with a simple update. I'll tell you what if I could afford to take this phone and shove it some Samsung exec you know where I would. I would love to blame it on Sprint but I can't because no other carrier in the U.S. has it either. This is the first and last Samsung product I buy mobile phone or otherwise. I am done......

Blame it on Sprint..why you ask? Froyo is everywhere in international markets and not in US because ALL the US carriers are slow...yes ALL of them...the international community always:
1) gets new phones before us
2) gets updates before us
Just cause 1 turtle is generally faster then the other turtles does not change the fact that the rabbits already passed the goal ages ago...
In reality if people were to flame sprint enough and not Samsung..Sprint could easily force samsung to update a phone even if samsung didn't want to...why don't they? cause sprint doesn't care enough and ppl blame samsung anyways so what do they care?

Canada, the UK and Australia just started updating in the last two weeks so it is not just in the U.S. that the release was slow. It is not clear who's fault it is but I blame both. If nothing else, blame Sprint for not communicating better and for not getting a better contract with Samsung for updates after the screw up with updates for the Moment and blame Samsung because even when they started to roll out an update in Canada, it started bricking phones and had to be pulled. 7 months after Google released 2.2, Samsung should be able to put out nearly perfect updates.

While the bricking is Samsung's fault it is not uncommon...HTC had quite a few bricks on the EVO and they pulled the upgrade...when they tested it theirs did not brick so they assumed it was fine and deployed it...once issues arose they pulled it..came back a week later with everything fixed...
Either way..can you explain how UK, Canada and Australia were able to do it by end of year and sprint couldn't?

I ****ing will never buy anything Samsung again... also hope their kids die in a ****ing road accident and then the remains get eaten by coyotes, so they can't even have an open casket funeral.
But then again, that's just me.
I was looking at the shift also, then I saw the speculated off contract price. 50 bucks more than the epic but it's hardware isn't as "good" as the epic. One of the sites I was reading said their opinion was sprint waited on this phone too long and it's specs are mediocre. Pay 550 for a midrange phone? I bet 4g is the only reason the price is jacked up on this one. My opinion, that phone isn't worth how much they might sell it for. Way overpriced!
All my luck, I'd buy another evo and a month later sprint would have another top end phone to replace the evo. Oh yeah, if they have 2.1 on the shift, then that's another excuse for it to be a waste of my time. Notice how some of the names for these phones are just so easy to make fun of? Epic fail, htc shift (minus the f).

Yeah but big difference. Htc released the update just over 2 months after froyo was released. Samsung released the Canadian update 7 months after froyo and they still couldn't get it right.
Samsung also said that they released froyo to the UK carriers in Oct. And expected it to be released to consumers in early November. It didn't get released until mid December. Sounds to me like maybe their was a big flaw and it had to go back to samsung.
There is no way to know for sure who is at fault but I am going to blame both. I think the manufactures and carriers work together on these updates and they both have to share responsibility for the success or failure of their efforts.

But see the reason why the EVO was updated so fast was due to pressure from Sprint to be the first one...so while they both hold responsibility..putting pressure on sprint is 10x more effective then putting pressure on samsung...
see notice most people who give up respond by saying:
"thats it im not buying another samsung device ever again"
but no one is saying
"thats it im not buying another sprint device again"
Now true that other carriers didn't release upgrades either for their Galaxy S phones...but at same time..Sprint doesn't care if you buy an HTC, EVO or Samsung as long as your paying their monthly bill...
I just think the carriers need to be put under more pressure...lets take the moment for example...they said it doesn't have hardware for froyo..which is a lie because its 95% same hardware as Intercept and Transform...people complained to samsung to no evail..if people complained and blamed sprint...you'd see Froyo out the door in no time for the Moment...
In US carriers are king, and they are the ones that need to be pressured to get things done..
Meh, just do the ext4 conversion, and download the latest quantum rom. It's stable, fast, and overall just great. After you do this, you'll stop complaining about an update. I'm perfectly happy as it is, and in absolutely no rush.

The thing is, the devs really need the source code for the froyo kernels if they are going to do anything with it.

Do you know why? Because us Americans are a bunch of whiny *****es who go into cardiac arrest when we find out that we have to pay more than $19.99 for a cell phone, need our hands constantly held and for whatever reason, expect that phone companies owe us the world. Ooh, also because for whatever reason phone companies refuse to implement bunch of features that GSM and CDMA networks support. Why can't I have two lines on a single SIM card like I had in Europe? I'm taking to you AT&T and T-Mobile. Why are we just now getting features that Japanese and Korean networks had years ago? Simply, there is no market for advanced phones here.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Frankly I don't care who's fault it is. Both Companies profit off of users buying/owning an Epic, therefore both should bust ass and get the update out. If I received this type of service at a restraunt... forget about it.
I talked to the Denver District Sprint Store Manager today nd he said he talked to his boss and got the reason the epic wasn't getting an update yet... Sprint ID. There are apparently integration issues, then it was removed, added, removed, yada yada. Apparently Froyo for Epic was ready to be released ota on the 26th but when push came to shove the sprint ID was having issues, so the update was pulled.
Not sure how true this is... but so help me if Sprint ID is the holdup... I don't want that **** on my phone anyway..

Yeah with all due respect the Charge pretty much is our SF with 4G. Yeah you get a FFC and a slightly larger screen but not a real upgrade IMO. More power to anyone purchasing this sucker but as for me I'll hold out for a more tangible increase on the specs

I read that the SGS2 will be on at&t not on verizon, if that is true, we only have the option of motorola bionic if we want to buy a dual core phone, and I am not buying motorola, they want to restrict so much what you can do with your phone by encrypting their bootloaders, not a pro-costumer company I would say

i would bet almost anything that every major carrier will get a variant of the sgs2...id imagine though that tmo and att get them first...followed at some point by sprint and vzw
$250 through AmazonWireless PreOrder:
http://wireless.amazon.com/dp/B004XD1S4M/
I expect the price to fall about $100 over the course of a month after release. I bet you can get it for about $150 a month after release or sooner.
One way to achieve that: Keep an eye on the best deal, if you are eligible for upgrade w/ 2 yr contract discount, then take the best deal to a VZN store and ask them to beat it. If you get a competent sales person, they will find a creative way to beat the price.
I got the Fascinate the first day it came out (unintentionally, I hadn't even heard of it before that day). I looked up prices online, took the best price I could find in and they beat it. My price out the door was a little higher, but with the mail in rebate and the service credits I got on my next months bill: my final price was far less than it would have been any other way at the time.
SGS2 yes, charge no. The name doesn't mean it will get any better support then any of the other samsung phones.

i still wouldnt give those jerks a dime...after all the crap theyve pulled
The more I read (which is entirely too much lately), the more it seems that the SG2 is going to take a long time to have an "official" release in the US. I try to put myself in the position of there possibly being two different consumers (one for the Infuse and one for the SG2). Unfortunately, I don't think there is a "need" for both devices. It really seems counterproductive for AT&T to release the SG2 so soon after the release of the Infuse.
Call me paranoid but, I would REALLY like to have a phone that isn't a gray item (for warranty). I have faith in the hardware but you never know with electronics.
Anyone have an opinion on it? I have an iP4 which is perfectly fine. I just REALLY want to get an Android device and would prefer to stay on AT&T (service locally is good, and I am on an unlimited data plan).

If your iphone is in good shape and unlocked, sell on ebay for loads of cash. Purchase a sgs2 for 700-750. Still will be able to use your unlimited plan.
But I really dont see SGS2 on ATT anytime soon.
I thought there was some big non-carrier specific announcement by Samsung in New York on May 24th or something? Honestly, the Infuse is just an oversized SGS with an overclocked CPU.
If you've seen the video demonstrations of just how powerful the SGSII is, you'll start to realize these two devices are actually worlds apart. I'm using an unbranded SGSII, but if you're holding out for AT&T's version, don't give up yet!
You cold buy a SG2 overseas but it won't work on the same 3g band as AT&T. If you are planning to stay on at&t why don't you.buy the Motorola attic. I own one and its incredibly fast.

You'd be wrong, twice. It does indeed work on AT&Ts 3G/"4G" bands [unlocked]. Its also called the Motorola Atrix 4G, not the attic. While quick, MotoBLUR is garbage.

There's an announcement planned, yes. However, it could easily be for the AT&T branded Nexus S or one of the new tablets.
To those of us who care about hardware the phones (Infuse and SG2) are definitely worlds apart. However to Joe Consumer who doesn't know or care about hardware specs, I don't think it will matter.
The wife keeps giving me the evil-eye when I mention ordering one from the UK. I think I'm wearing her down though

You cold buy a SG2 overseas but it won't work on the same 3g band as AT&T. If you are planning to stay on at&t why don't you.buy the Motorola attic. I own one and its incredibly fast.

I've messed with an Atrix. Seemed OK. Not spectacular though. I have a friend who actually returned his for the HTC Inspire (and loves it). That doesn't speak well to me. Plus EVERYTHING I've seen about the SG2 proves it's definitely the cat's meow (currently).

It's not just about the specs, those specs translate into REAL world performance differences. The SGSII has not even had the slightest hiccup with web browsing... regardless of how many windows are open, how many graphics are in each window, etc. My SGS, while great when it came out, easily got bogged down, and multi-window browsing was never a truly usable feature. Given the Infuse is has almost identical specs to an SGS, I predict it will have similar issues.
People keep thinking these specs being listed off are only for geeks, but once in a while, they do relate to real world usability and performance differences. And when they do, they are QUITE significant.
The title of your thread almost gave me a heart attack thinking there was some type of major technical issue uncovered. My SGS2 arrives tomorrow. More appropriate title would be "AT&T-branded phone not looking good in the U.S."
I guarantee you several hundred thousand of the 3MM presales are destined for AT&T. If you poke around the technical sites, the general consensus is a 4G version for VZW followed by AT&T this year. Nobody's even mentioning Sprint or T-Mobile. Depending on the timing, the SGS2 could be AT&T's first LTE phone. I haven't seen any updates on their LTE status but I'm guessing they're pushing to get something up quickly to show the world they'll be as good as VZW in the long run.

Sorry about the startle. I changed the title of the thread.
I am just frustrated (as are many I'm sure). I'd like to offload my iP4 before the value drops too much (iP5 release). Unfortunately, I'm unable to go without a phone and I am really nervous about a gray market item. Hell even an unbranded Samsung direct phone would work for me. I'm going to have to pay full price anyhow.
Yeah, I think ATT will get the SGS2 with LTE.
Use the fuzzy math I used to convince myself the phone was only $475. $800 - $325 (sold G2) = $475 Can you really put a price on whipping your phone out and gathering a crowd around to see it for a couple of months? My take on buying an import is you spin the wheel and take your chances. If you buy it in the UK, Samsung U.S. will service it. If you buy from Expansys they'll ship it back to the UK for you for service. How long you're without a phone is probably the biggest concern. If you use a credit card with buyers and/or warranty protection you'd have a back-up that will at least get you your money back. Go ahead, you know you want to do it
The event is NOT for the Nexus S for AT&T. Otherwise it would be an event WITH AT&T, not an independent Samsung event.
Hang in there OP. I am in the same boat. I refuse to replace my iPhone 4 with a $750 phone that will be $500 through my carrier. That's $250 in my pocket. Another $250 and I can buy one for my wife
I bet the event is for sgs2 variants. Nexus s doesn't warrant a bug event just like here in Canada it came quietly on all carriers. No big announcements. Many peope don't even know it lol.
The phone is been out a month and is at&t compatible. The event is def. about something more exciting
I'm in the same boat here, too. However after my experience with the Captivate, and the shoddy quality control of its hardware, and the still-present GPS woes and color-banding issues on the SGS II, it seems Samsung rushed yet another product to market and perhaps these extra couple months we'll have to wait will be well worth it in the end.

Could be the Tab 8.9 though.
I was wondering what could be that of the SGS II that recently went through the FCC with AT&T only bands?
I hoping the announcement on the 25th will be that Samsung will sell the GS II unlocked in the states and working on AT&T's network just like Google does sell their Nexus phones.

Do you really think it will be $500 subsidized??? There goes my dream of getting it through AT&T!!! The company only pays up to $100 for a new phone so $400 more is hefty *sob*

Go to "USA May 24th announcement" thread to discuss this, I think I mentioned pricing there, or I may be wrong.
I think there is no way the phone will be more than $250 with a 2 year contract on AT&T. My opinion (based on 12 years of buying AT&T phones on 4 lines) it will be around $250, before or after $50 mail-in rebate, depending on when it is getting released. Maybe just straight forward $200 with no rebates if it is released in the fall.
Interesting post from the Moto forums today. This makes perfect sense given the way AT&T has been going the last few months:

I was at an ATT store this morning inquiring about a laptop dock for my Atrix. They couldn't find it on their website(discontiued), then they said that the original Atrix was at "end of life" as far as ATT was concerned. I take this to mean that ATT will no longer support the Atrix and not push for ICS from Motorola for it!"

ugh. F motorola.
next phone won't be a motorola. sadly. don't much like any of the other phones.
Sadly I will probably go with a Samsung. If I were to get one tomorrow, it would be the Skyrocket (there's LTE here).
Yeah, I would go back to samsung (skyrocket) I had a captivate before the ATRIX.

And just because Att will not carry it anymore you think it's the end of the Atrix?

Eh, get used to it. Buy whatever is the best phone at the time and understand that it will be completely outdated in 6 months.
Oh, and don't buy the hype that the ATT store salesmen sell. Some of them are a little dense.

Couldn't agree more. I have a close friend who works at a corporate store and all he says is that they are told to push IPHONEs. I tell him Fkuc you my friend, and then we have drinks.

Its one thing for a carrier to stop selling a phone after that, but if the phone is only supported by the manufacture for 6 months, there is a serious issue. Especially given that a bar has been set for about 2 years by both Apple and Google on Nexus devices, and that 2 years is the length of the average US contract.
I think this is being read into wrong though. AT&T most likely is just no longer selling the OG model, not Motorola discontinuing support.
I have not given up on ICS yet, but I think it is unlikely to come to the Atrix 4G. I realized that when I recognized the Atrix 2 was a cost reduced version of the 4G. My theory is that MOTO marketing f'd up big time when they over priced the Atrix and accessories. The Atrix 2 was doomed because the Atrix name was damaged beyond reclamation.
I don't see any new phone presently available that is significantly better and some worse. Posts like the one that started this thread hasten the day when I say, "enough already" and install cm7/9.

Following up on myself, I don't understand why Moto won't just say what their plans for the Atrix 4G and ICS are and take the heat and get it over with.
The guys who run the forum at moto remind me of the man who played piano in a cathouse and always claimed he never knew what was going on up stairs.

I'm a little surprised Atrix is getting dropped cause it was such a big deal when it came out. If Apple makes the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen, I'm getting it. Atleast Apple won't drop support for it. That's one of the reasons Android pisses me off. Stop making 200 different Android phones a month, and concentrate more on updates. You've got phones coming out that people forget about in a month.

so much for a device demoed and praised at CES..
Time Line:
Q1:
CES Jan 2011: Demonstrated and Praised as one of the best devices at that CES.
Feb/March 2011: Launched
Q3:
GB update
Q4:
Still GB updates
end of Q4:
EOL
im not purchasing any moto devices on older OS anymore..
should have not purchased Froyo atrix while GB was around and shall not purchase GB Razr when ICS is around..
/* Rant mode off
I still do not regret purchase of atrix; thankful to QUALITY of dev support it is receiving. Even pre-Betas for atrix are more stable than final releases of my older devices (captivate and vibrant)
But for a general user who wouldnot think of anything beyond rooting...this is kind of abuse :-/
Guys its not MOTO. ATT has final say on all updates for its phones. Only way around it is the Icrap and A Nexus.
Once Google slows the OS updates down to once maybe twice a year like they plan it will be less of a prob

ATT is not the only vendor but looking at the update history so far, it would be too late to expect ICS for atrix considering delay in GB update.
I believe the statement this guy posted is true regarding the Atrix 4G and AT&T. If you look on the AT&T website you cannot buy the laptop dock anymore on either the regular store or the premier store. AT&T previously told me that when an item is removed from there instead of being marked "out of stock", it's gone for good. AT&T is selling off Atrix accessories, and I do believe they are done with the Atrix. Will they still sell it?...............sure, until the stock is depleted.............will it still be around for a long time?.............sure............the refurbs will be going round and round for years to come.
What is perturbing is that this phone lasted a measly 6 months or so, as was already stated. Nobody disputes that phones come and go, new models are released, etc.............what is messed up is that people who purchased "the most powerful cell phone on the planet" were lied to about the specs by both AT&T and Moto, one case in point being 1080p recording which we never got, and have suffered lack luster support from both entities.
I love my Atrix, and will keep it as long as devs are putting out new ROM's, etc., but I am up for an upgrade again in less than 2 months, and will look for something with more support. Unfortunately I am stuck with AT&T for the time being because I have a family plan with 5 phones on it, and who would pay early termination on 5 phones?
This is my 4th Android phone. Like someone else said, 3gs was supported for least 3 years. I think I want to try an apple phone next. We shouldn't have to rely on outside people/unofficial support for the next version of Android.

The reason they push a new product every 6 months or so is reflected on the attitudes of most android forums; never satisfied, always desiring something more from their devices. People make lateral device changes (Atrix to Moto RAZR for example) instead of upgrades because there is some level of constant dissatisfaction with their Android device. Companies such as motorola are catering to this, and making tons of money in the process. Why bother support a device for multiple years when people are willing to shell out gobs of cash for Android's 'flavor of the week'? It makes more money for the company and the carrier.
You have to remember that the carrier not the device manufacturer decides what phones make it to market. Apple was wise to keep their warranty and product support in-house, and their quality and support reflects as much. Other phone manufacturers are bent over the carriers' knee. The carrier dictates how long the phone is supported, what accessories are available, and how software updates get pushed. Apple was wise to circumvent all this BS, and look how many iPhone accessories there are in every store, how Apple pushes software updates via their own program, ultimately you get an overall better product that is supported for much longer, while still maintaining profitability.
I love Android as a product, but what an abysmal business model for an open source-based OS. The only thing that keeps me going on Android are the occasional product gems such as the Atrix and the unofficial support provided from devs around the world.
Lets face it, Android owners still look to Apple as the golden standard.
