Sprint to get iPhone 5 per WSJ - Epic 4G General

I'm sure this has been posted and I may get flamed for it but I don't really care, I don't have lots of time at work to check my bases before posting and only get to view XDA intermittently.

While this at first glance appears to be more Apple happy news, I think this is great news for all Sprint users as it will drive more business Sprint's way. As they grow and become more competitive in the market prices will stabilize across the board for all carriers and drive the US Cell Market away from the Duopoly that it is headed for. If this report proves true it's a huge win for Sprint and I say thumbs up to Hesse.

Well...assuming Sprint will get the next Nexus, this means they'll be releasing the iPhone, SGS2, and Nexus Prime all within (possibly) a month of each other. Worst case...3 months.
If this is the case, this may crush my dream of Google buying Sprint

Lol. I don't think sprint will ever sell. The company is growing more and more and if this is the case a lot of Verizon and att customers will come to sprint IF sprint keeps the prices they have now.

Or they may do it to piss apple off...
Kidding.
But this would be a great thing for sprint...maybe not the customers...I don't think they're network can handle this. We would all get slow data speeds/crappy call quality...and the giant amount of att/verizon users who want unlimited data is even worse.

This made my wife's day...
Of course, I told her that I don't support iPhones...

There's been scuttlebutt about this for a while. I agree with other posters...if it helps Sprint, great, but I have zero interest in it and don't like the potential effects it may have on the rest of Sprint's network. Also hope it's not bad for their other partnerships.
It would be hilarious if they kept it at 3G though. And the Appleheads or Jobs dickriders or whatever you call them wouldn't even care...many of them think AT&T and Verizon iPhones already ARE 4G. (chortle)

I would be tempted to buy the iphone5 but i'm in love with the android now, and any iphone app looks 100x better on the ipad.

I don't usually post more than once from work but this article needs to be added here.
http://www.mobiledia.com/news/104313.html
Maybe Sprint getting the iPhone is a sign that Apple is becoming frustrated with poor network and unresponsive customer service from AT&T.
As for the overload of the network with an influx of iPhone users, it won't hit Sprint for several years, especially considering how many iTards are stuck in contracts still, and don't have the money to cough up 300-400 per device every couple of years. ALSO this may speed the roll out of LTE as I am sure that Apple wants a 4G device, but would not likely settle for WiMax as producing not only CDMA/GSM but LTE/WiMax as well would strain their manufacturing and cut into their all important profit margin. WiMax is the obvious odd man out.

This is mostly very good news for us. It'll keep the people who want an iPhone from leaving Sprint and bolster Sprint's marketshare which can only help us. Also it may drive Google to ensure the next Nexus phone launches on every network that has an iPhone, making the Nexus Prime (or whatever it's called) more likely for us. And since that's essentially what I'm waiting on to replace my Epic, I like my odds better now.
Only downside: the iPhone has been said to be the cause of AT&T's network troubles and did have an effect on Verizon as well. I'm concerned that it may force Sprint to reconsider their data plans which may hurt us, or the additional traffic may cause problems for us. But still, I'd say the former benefits outweigh these risks.

iPhone 5 with unlimited data plan will be quite a sell for Sprint.
I bought Sprint stock two days ago.

I am now quite bullish on Sprint. Evo 4G was the best-selling Android phone of Q2 2011. Evo 3D started selling in July.
There have been news that Sprint is buying out the rest of Clearwire and integrating them into Network Vision. The best scenario is that a group of cable providers (Cox, Comcast, etc.) are investing in Sprint, which will then use the money to directly buy Clearwire.
Thus, Clearwire's lack-of-money build-out issue and LTE transition will be resolved. Sprint will have a huge spectrum advantage over ATT and Verizon. And it will have an infusion of cash and outside support for its Network Vision and leveraging of iPhone 5 sales.

AND...
since Sprint also announced today that it would begin offering the new Blackberry Curve 95-something-or-other (who really cares about RIM?) I decided to check Sprint stock and if you own any, I hope you enjoyed the 10.12% jump in value, and an additional .84% after hours. 11% in a day? Not bad for the girls we go with...

Just playing devil's advocate here. The arguement about network performance degradation isn't necessarily relevant here, as network footprint doesn't have as much to do with it as available spectrum does. And sprint has more than any other carrier. Think of it as width versus length debate. As far as how many users and how much data they consume is concerned, it's more about the spread of spectrum than the strength.
EDIT: and while yes it is true that a single tower can only handle so much and this is where the footprint arguement grounds itself in, this is also a much easier solved problem than the complex one of spreading out your spectrum. The cost is more fixed: increasing footprint means increasing tower count. Increasing spectrum, however, is a different beast. This problem means having to acquire spectrum off of those who own it. And the cost of that can vary greatly and isn't as easily obtained.
Plus, sprint already has a ton of money invested in network vision, and has a deadline of 2014. Rest assured, with the amount of money at risk, they will most definitely be hitting that deadline

Im wondering if its just the sdk or the source. If its just the sdk its pretty much a emulator and software tools for app developers. If its the source then that would be perfect. We could start building aosp gingerbread for the Evo.

n1 is still highly used in alot of university tech demos and concept technologies... its basically a cheap small computer with alot of sensors
case in point, the n1 in rocket launching for accelerometer and sensor data, etc.
i would say its still holding its own very well.
i would also hope its the testbed for all future android iterations, because if it runs good on that phone, then it'll run AWESOME on our evo phones.

Why? They have the same CPU (well, we have the CDMA variation if you want to be exact), same GPU, and same amount of RAM. If anything the Nexus One will run better since their kernels are usually more optimized because they come from Google.
As for not being a big leap, I think UI wise it will be. Expect a newer, darker theme and more animations/effects. I think that it'll look like a mash up between Froyo, the newer voice actions pop ups, the ASOP 3d gallery app, the YouTube app, and Google TV. I also expect hardware acceleration for the UI to be introduced.
Speaking of hardware acceleration, I'm actually kind of worried about how the EVO will perform here. I had a low end Sprint Optimus S, Epic 4G, and my EVO 4G on hand today. I wanted to see how each performed when using the 3D Gallery app and the EVO was pretty choppy.
The Epic's GPU is obviously good so its no surprise that it had no problems. The Optimistic S has a past gen 600 MHz CPU and the same Adreno 200 GPU as the EVO (which really makes a statement: our GPU is in a $50 budget phones), the lower resolution also helps and it ended up running the app very smoothly. The higher resolution of the EVO and the Adreno 200 was as I said choppy. Simple things like popping up the menu were choppy and unattractive even when only 1 photo was in the gallery...
I really hope Google has something up their sleeves. I can't imagine them releasing a choppy UI on the Nexus One which is essentially the same as the EVO performance wise. At least I hope so.

The best thing that gingerbread will bring is VOIP using google voice number. If it works anything like the client thats part of gmail.com that would be cool.

Gingerbread will look nothing like that. That much I can guarantee.
If you've ever played with making themes you'd realize that it's probably trying to call a bunch of system graphics that currently do not exist in Froyo. That's why it's mostly solid colors.
No, No, No....It is not for the N1, it is for the N2! Well they might not call it the Nexus 2 but that is what it is.... Googles successor to the N1. Tmobile will have it and it will be released the 11th with gingerbread pre installed and it's a samsung with 1.2 snapdragon..(some rumors are the 8th)....Well that is the most popular rumor.. Google it. We only have 4 days to see if it is true. If it is, i will be all over it!! I've been waiting for a reason to go back to t-mobile. $79.99 a month unlimited (if you buy phone outright, no contract) and they have their 4g in my area now, sprint doesnt, and they charge a ton more than t-mobile.
a ton more? more yes, if you don't have 4G probably not worth it, but t-mobile is capping their data now

Unlimited means unlimited, not capped. I had this plan a few months ago before the evo released, on my nexus. My girl got the nexus and opened an account w/ tmobile, got the same plan, 79.99 unlimited everything.
and yeah $40 more a month to sprint than i was paying T-Mobile is a ton more. I do understand that tmobile doesn't have the best coverage for some, so some tmobile is not a good option. but it is excellent where i am. I like the free built in wifi calling too, no need for a separate airwave device or whatever it is called.

Rumors are that it has been delayed -- that's if it even exists. It also might just be a near stock Android phone that is not directly supported by Google (like the G2) so it might come with Gingerbread but still attached to the same crappy Samsung software upgrading. And a 1.2 Snapdragon? They don't use Snapdragons, it's rumored to be a 1.2 GHz Hummingbird.
You can get a EPRP plan with sprint and pay $69.99 w/ the new data fee or pay $79.99 (also with the new data fee included) for the regular ED plan with yearly upgrades. With unlimited mobile to mobile it's pretty much unlimited all around and with the ED plan you get a new phone every year at a subsidized price. Not saying that T-Mo is bad but Sprint offers superior 3G coverage, competitive (at least in this stage - T-Mo's HSPA+ coverage is just upgrades to it's existing 3G network which will become a bottleneck as it's the worse of the big 4) "4G" coverage, and better value (cheaper on contract w/ yearly upgrades).
I also wouldn't be super surprised if there's a Sprint WiMax version of this Samsung phone. Samsung already makes a WiMax Galaxy S for Sprint (Epic 4G), and the rumored Nexus Two is basically a Galaxy S with a bumped up CPU and vanilla Android. The original Nexus One was also announced by Sprint before being axed to better push their flagship EVO 4G which was going to be released around the same time.

Feb 7th New Info on Rumor? more weight towards iPhone :(

Sprint CEO Sidesteps Question About iPhone
We posed the question regarding Sprint and the iPhone a while back and reported on a Sprint announcement coming February 7th, wondering if this was going to be an announcement for the Sprint iPhone. Now it appears there is more information about this being reported than we expected and that rumor about Sprint getting the iPhone might have more life to it than first thought.
In an interview last week in Detroit, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse was asked about a Sprint iPhone as reported by AppleInsider. In the past, he has been very candid with the press and in this situation, he said he had no comment. He does not discuss conversations Sprint is having with 3rd parties. Does that mean they are in conversations with Apple to get the iPhone? That would seem logical based on several things.
Apple is facing a tidal wave of Android phones in the US and recently has been overshadowed by them in several different reports at the end of 2010. To stem that tide in 2011, Apple is going to have to do several things. The first is to increase distribution, which they have started on with the iPhone coming to Verizon and they are expected to increase their sales that way. The other thing they will need to do is make the iPhone 5 a 4G capable phone.
By having the iPhone 5 be a 4G phone, it opens up many other options for them. Most carriers in the US will have some form of a 4G network up by the end of 2011. Sprint is one of those US carriers who is moving in that direction. There is nothing to stop Apple from producing a chip which will allow the iPhone to function on multiple networks and therefore increase the potential number of companies who can sell the iPhone.
Sprint would be the next logic carrier in the US to sell the iPhone, being the 3rd largest carrier. Having a similar CDMA network to Verizon, makes it a much easier situation for Apple. The best case situation we can see is for Sprint to get the iPhone when the next version is released, which would be June at the earliest. We do expect to see more information about this surfacing in a few months as the iPhone 5 release comes closer. In the mean time, this is just a rumor and speculation.
source: http://www.techieinsider.com/news/5822
Why invite all the android news sources to that?
Plus, the only way it would be an "industry first" is if Apple withheld respective competing 4G technologies from other carriers.
don't care about the iphone. probably first wp7 4g or a 4.5" phone.
Just give us the EVO 2 with wimax 2 / lte support and call it a day please
Yeah iPhone is def not the announcement...
My guess is Android 3 + WiMax. Ultimately I expect the announcement to also not be all that. Probably a tablet.
there have been comments/rummors/speculations that all the changes on price and upgrades are in preparation for the coming iphone. That is why Verizon and Sprint have been making same moves/changes...
i dont see myself changing to an iphone.... to much I can not personally stand about apple.
I do know..
that if my prices and benefits have changed for the worse, because of the iphone!
that I will be getting less network throughput because of heavier demand...
we (the android) users have to pay for the iphone demands.
it will be a very very sad day... there will be a huge backlash from android / blackberry /webOS / win7 users.
Sprint is a terrible marketing machine. they will make this situation worse.
Feb 7 ... better be huge ...
fine they will annouce the iphone...
but they better throw out there a huge bone for other OS users. or they will see a huge migration too... TMobile.
I think I'm one the few that welcomes the iphone to sprint. Why? Well right now I'm on sprint with the EVO, and my wife is on at&t iphone because as she puts it "its so user friendly". If sprint gets the iphone, she can finally join me and save us a ton of money.
I'd welcome the iPhone to Sprint, don't see the problem with it.
It would be great to get the iPhone. It would put pressure on android phone makers to create better phones and generally up the overall quality of Android phones on the market. Its happening on AT&T now that the exclusivity has ended and we will begin to see it with everyone else who carries the iPhone.
Love competition in the marketplace.
How is iPhone introduction revolutionary, unique, never-been-done?

it isnt that the iphone might be coming to sprint.
it is the fact.. that sprint has to do all these changes to get the iphone.. to support the iphone..
sprint hads to jump through all these hoops and raise profit margin.. so that they can afford the extra cost to get the iphone. payback to apple... steve has to get his share.
mean while...
non-iphone / smartphone users... get taxed so that sprint can have the iphone.
tax = lost in upgrade yearly... every smartphone gets charged the $10 fee (not just 4G phones)... etc....
i am fine.. with these changes if it is .. inflatioin.. cost of doing business... cost of getting better services/speeds for my account!
if it for sprint to cover iphone cost!!!!! then it sucks!!!
Same boat here. Although my wife uses different excuses, I know ultimately it is because she does'nt want to give up the iPhone.

I LOVE my Evo, but I don't really see how having a Sprint iPhone is a bad idea. if Sprint is losing customers the way it's reported every quarter, having even more choice regarding devices is a great thing for a carrier and its customers.

I don't care if it's the iPhone. My wife would be happy but I'm just hoping we can get Wimax coverage in or near my area.

Its funny how little people know about this stuff. Everyone saying its gonna be the iphone5 or even an iphone with 4g is plain clueless. Apple NEVER has a carrier do a release of a major product for them. Verizon did the iphone the other week bc all it is is an iphone4 with cdma chip instead of only gsm. Any and all hardware revisions like adding 4g and iphone5 will always be done at apples own event every year.
Now if this is an iphone4 same as verizon sprint is completely clueless as how to conduct themselves.
They may announce it but id expect more than that like wimax2 or announce lte/wimax plan bc its supposed to be something new no one else has.

So let's see here, in the last week Sprint:

* Doubled their ETF to $350, and the activation fee to $36; removed activation fee promos.

And they're basically scrapping Wi-Max to start building out their LTE network...2 years behind everyone else.
They just went from okay-for-the-price, to worse than AT&T/Verizon within a week. I've had it with 25k-150k 3G speeds and shi*ty ass 4G that's the same fing speed as AT&T's 3G, and that's if I'm within eye sight of the tower.

Overview
Rooting a phone (or getting root) is the process of modifying the operating system on a
device to obtain complete control over it. By rooting a device, the user can then alter certain
built-in functionality of the device. Rooting is strongly discouraged by Sprint and device
manufacturers.
If the customer is experiencing issues that are suspect to be caused by rooting the device
Step Action
1
Educate the customer on the risks involved in rooting their device:
• Rooting can cause irreparable damage to the device.
• Rooting can result in an inoperable device.
• Rooting may result in all customer data and customizations being lost.
2
Open and eTicket and exchange the device per standard Advanced Exchange
procedures.

I'm not elite at anything, but this is a hacker forum not desperate housewives of sprint. hacker (hobbyist) = who makes innovative customizations or combinations of retail electronic and computer equipment.
I also know the origins of elite, which most kids don't
The guy was venting. If someone venting on a public forum really disrupt your life than wow to you all. Op i personally feel you but I'm with Sprint for the long haul.
*Edit*
Things to look forward too.
It looks like Sprint might be upgrading the existing EVDO Rev A network to Rev B.

OP posted the same thread in the 3D general AND on Engadget's Facebook post about this topic.
Its fine, he's upset.
So am I.
But there are already threads on this topic and in complete truth its not going to do any good to complain here.
Contact [email protected].
Post on their Facebook.
Post on the Sprint forums.
Or just move to a different carrier.
Those are much more productive ways of handling this.

Yeah, I've done that; talked to Tamera in Dan's office, who opened an advance support ticket for me, where I was told the tower by my house (50k 3G for over a year now) would be upgraded by Sept 17th. On the first Friday of Aug., at 8:30PM, from a guy called and said that they weren't going to be able to get it fixed until Dec 31st...and I'm sure Dec 31st will turn into May 27st, and that'll turn into October 2015. :|
Sprint is really, really good at lying and getting absolutely nothing done. They need to take a few pages out of Apple's book.
And as far as this whole Network Vision goes, it sounds great, and I'm excited about it, but 3 years to complete it? The world went from 3G to 4G within 3 year's time! Wayyy too long to roll it out. Verizon will have LTE in 90% of America within 3 years. :|

Everyone I know with an iPhone loves it and AT&T's service. And I'd like to see HTC exchange my EVO 2 times within the first month, like Apple did for my new MacBook Air.
[QUOTE="Hrshycro, post: 17589122, m...ike Apple did for my new MacBook Air.[/QUOTE]
I was with at&t for six years. Service was horrible the last year and a half. Plus, who wants to pay extra for data usage? Idk about you guys but I am averaging 5-6gb a month. And HTC wont replace your evo twice in a month...mainly because they make quality products that don't break, unlike apple.

That's how long it is going to take.
Verizon started on their LTE network in 2008.
Also, Verizon may have LTE like that in 3 years but that's exactly what Sprint Vision is. All towers will have "4g"
Granted, Verizon has several years headstart in implementing LTE, but unless I misunderstood what you wrote, Sprint's 4G is definitely not LTE. Sprint is using the inferior Clearwire WiMAX format, so they'll be starting from scratch when moving to LTE. If Sprint handles the move to LTE with all of the efficiency that they've handled the addition of WiMAX, Sprint will have it nation-wide in maybe 2023.
I had also read quite some time ago that Sprint would start marketing phones that support both WiMAX and LTE to help with that transition, but I just cannot see them doing that. I forsee that they're going to sell WiMAX phones right up until the day they move to LTE and then say, "Sorry, you'll have to purchase a new phone to use the 4G in your area...well, one day...when we get it to your area...maybe".
It amuses me that Sprint isn't interested in providing its customers with the highest quality, most powerful, daily user devices like the Evo 4G+ (Evo 3D - 3D + 1080p/8mp camera) or even any of the newer, high-end single-core devices. Its all marketing and they are only interested in being "First".
"Proud to introduce the FIRST 4G phone on the market (even though 90% of Evo 4G customers will be on their next phone before we'll have 4G anywhere near them)".
"The FIRST phone with a built in WiFi hotspot (no, there isn't one built into the Android OS! Its..an illusion! Only we have it! Only we have it!)".
"The FIRST 3D phone on the market (even though this is a mostly useless gimmick on a phone and just enabling the 3D-mode will eat your battery so fast you can see the inidcator moving, but we're playing on the fact that MARKETING has US consumers on a 3D kick via 3D TV's & BluRay players which unlike a 3D cellphone, are practical, useable devices)."
As others have pointed out, over the last several months Sprint has gotten rid of every reason to be with Sprint except one, and that it they're not throttling or limiting badwidth...officially...yet. Unofficially, I wonder what is the purpose for the http & rtsp data proxy servers all unmodified Sprint phones go through.
Sprint's story when we got our Evo 4G's was that the $10 per-line charge was, "... to cover the cost of the premium 4G data". I was told this on the phone. "Well, we don't have 4G here and won't have it anytime soon." "Oh, we just meant the premium data plan. We're charging the $10 instead of limiting data usage like other carriers do."
For those not old enough to recall how Sprint made their name in the cellphone industry, it was by a huge ad campaign making fun of all the other companys having daytime and nighttime minutes. Then one day, after Sprint was an established player in the market, all of those advertisements went away. A year or two later, all new Sprint cellphone plans had daytime and nighttime minutes. I wonder when they'll start limiting or throttling bandwidth...its only a matter of time.
This doesn't single out Sprint. They're just like any other piece of crap corporation that would slit our throats in a New York moment if it would improve their quarterly statement 1/100 of a percent.
As for Sprint Reps or any other character that would generally give someone crap because they post generally critical information regarding the carrier that they got their Evo 4G from, for folks like AbsolutZeroGI, I have another thought. Those same rights that enable folks like Hrshycro, austin420 and me to post our thoughts in this General forum setup just for such non-specific topics, also gives you rights.
You didn't have to click the link to this thread, to read it, to agree with it or to comment on it. It doesn't matter if there have been 100 threads on this or similar topics posted before this one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Hrshycro beginning this thread, or with anyone else contributing to it.
The sad end result of all of this is that the only reason that you even stayed on this thread after reading the OP was to post some smartass, insulting remark. There's nothing inferior about WiMax.
They will certainly not be "starting from scratch" when it comes to LTE.
Sprint didn't do anything "wrong" when it comes to WiMax. Clearwire was in trouble and that caused the problems that we all suffer.
The only thing "wrong" Sprint did is not being able to predict the future in regards to Clearwire's financial future.

They don't throttle phones. I'm in love with this continuing insinuation from people that want to dump on them where there is no proof.
They go through a proxy so they throttle? No, prove it.
Moreover, the definition as it's being used for 'throttling' is limiting speed after a certain amount of usage.
Sprint doesn't do that.

If you're unhappy with Sprint, you are welcome to leave.
I don't know why that's so hard.
I was eligible for a premier annual upgrade on september 2011, back in February sprint said it would be on september 2012 due to changes in the program.
I *****ed on the chat for an hour because they were resetting my promised upgrade date for another year. Supervisor ended up giving me the credits for a full upgrade as of this month "Because I'm a loyal customer".
I've been with them for 11years with 5 lines and if they didn't budge on the upgrade, I would have jumped ship.
Now I'm tempted to get the SGS2 but I may wait for something better.
I agree with Hrschy. I signed up with Sprint because of their plans and what were initially benefits and now they are changing everything and not in the interest of the customer. Oh and the only housewife in here is the one that pointed it out.

And every android device stomps any iPhone hands down we already have screens ranging from 4"-5"+ we have quadcore processors, 2gb ram, expandable storage. Tell me what exactly apple has to compete with Android again oh yeah nothing that's why they keep suing Google and every device manufacturer trying to slow them down and quell the competition, cause they can't keep up. Oh and SIRI? Samsung holds the patent on the technology, and has filed suit to block the import and sales of iPhones and iPads in the US. You know their junk is made in china with slave labor right? If you support apple you support inhumane working conditions for both adults and children who are forced to work in Chinese sweatshops, and a large portion of the workers are political prisoners, even the children who are deemed regime dissidents because of their parents political beliefs and are then used as slave labor in factories and work camps. And they charge ridiculous amounts of money for products that cost them less than $50 per device to have manufactured and that includes the parts and labor  apple is a complete fail, and I would never support a company like that financially or otherwise. Without getting the license the will be no LTE. That's if they can even import anymore devices into the US after the verdict in court today. They came to an agreement to allow apple to use the lte radios, at a cost of 65$ per radio per device. Compare that to the $15 they charge other manufacturers to lease the radios for their devices. That's why the new off contract price for a 64gb iFail 5 is 600$ and the 128gb is 800$ and the only difference between the 4s and 5 is a 4" screen vs 3.5" adding a 5th row of icons and the lte radio. Big win, its SoC was barely upgraded, and 70% of the hardware in the phone is made by Samsung, SoC, radios, screen and logic board the only thing not made by Samsung in the housing, and the device is assembled in factories whose conditions violate international labor standards and are akin to slavery. Apple is taking alot of heat in the international market over their labor practices, south Korea and several European countries have outright banned the import and sale of any apple products, meaning you can't even buy one online because they will be seized at the import point. If the Google/Motorola patent suit against apple goes thru the same will happen here in the US and they won't be able to import the devices from the Chinese sweatshop/slave labor camps where that crap is assembled

It's very hard to explain to iphone fans why the iphone 5 sucks. They haven't got a clue what NFC really is, and only think it is used to make contactless payments......... :silly:
They forget about the other useful stuff NFC can do.
Same goes for DLNA, they think only Apple can stream wireless video via airplay as they have no F-ing clue what DLNA :silly:
And to top it off, they think that reversible plug is a gods gift and think microUSB is only used for charging....... LOL

It's because that claim of Samsung owning 90% of LTE patents simply isn't accurate. If you look at the report here from 2011 Samsung had amassed about 284 patents or about 9% of the total. According to this article dated earlier this month Samsung is up to 819 but that's still only about 12% of the total. As you can see if that second link, Apple hasn't let itself out in the cold on LTE patents, developing or acquiring 434. We'll have to wait and see if it's enough to fight off a suit from Samsung, if Samsung ever actually files it.

Do you have a source for this? I've found no evidence of any agreement and I can't really see any regulators in any country allowing such a wide price discrimination on such licenses.
its SoC was barely upgraded, and 70% of the hardware in the phone is made by Samsung, SoC, radios, screen and logic board the only thing not made by Samsung in the housing

As there have been no tear downs for the iPhone 5 as of yet, there is no way to know any of this. I've seen speculation that A6 is based on a Cortex A15, which would put it in the same class as the S4 Snapdragon that powers the Evo 4G LTE and the US version of the Galaxy SIII. But that's still just speculation until it's actually torn down.
and the device is assembled in factories whose conditions violate international labor standards and are akin to slavery.

That same factory is used by Motorola, Amazon, Dell, HP and others, including Samsung. Chances are, if you have an Android phone, it was probably made in China.
That South Korea ban may still be in place but I can't imagine it's any more complicated than appeasing Samsung in their home country. As for the European one, that was a suit in Germany where Motorola won an injunction against Apple last December, but that injunction lifted and dismissed in February.
Best line ever: "Apple: Doing Nothing and Calling It Innovation!"
You know what fails apple fanboys whorship them like they are god here's a link to show how low they go.

One of my favorite features and reasons to buy unlocked

I'm here in the US using an AT&T sim. I am so sick of the terrible carriers putting their little fingers and logos into all these devices.
My least favorite of these new things is the carrier logo in the top left of the notification shade.
This is a gross mis-use of the notification bar and AT&T and Verizon and the rest need to knock it off.
I'm happy (really really really happy) to report that the N7100 does NOT do this. Love it!

My International Note 1 does not have this either

Hummm.... My locked Note (purchased from T-Mobile), does not say "T-Mobile" anywhere in the notification bar either. It's one of the first things I noticed when I bought it a couple of months ago.
It does have a permanently-emblazoned T-Mobile logo painted on it directly below the earpiece though

Is LTE speed the only reason to buy a carrier branded note?

For me LTE is huge as AT&T is extremely fast around here. Faster than my Fios connection. That plus I'm due for an upgrade so I'll pay the greatly reduced price for the device.
I dunno about you... but that's not true on my HTC Sensation... also it might be from the manufacturer (at least you know who's network you are on if you're roaming).
I don't think I've ever seen that... Then again, I don't usually buy Samsung phones
I really really despise carrier branding..... Are US carriers the only ones that do this?
I'm just not sure what I should do? I've always had TMO and Sprint, but lately they've been horribly slow.
So I'm also curious, IS LTE/4G the only positive for the US Note II?
LTE is nice but if it's going to make the note battery act like the battery on my gnex then I'd be willing to go without

I wonder if threads like the OPs are just people trying to make themselves feel better for dropping $700 on a phone that can be had in 9 days for $299 (or less).
I mean, I have ATT and am ready to drop the cash on an international version, but I just can't seem to do it. I use Netflix a lot (don't worry, I pay a healthy amont for data) and it sucks mostly on my GSM GNEX. Stuttering and buffering. I just want a fast connection, and the LTE note is worth waiting 9 days on, IMO...
The 2500mAh battery on the AT&T LTE Note lasts all day.
The 3100mAh will be better. Food for thought.

You are making a lot of assumptions (price and availability date), none of which have been confirmed.
Nevertheless I agree with you on what you are trying to say.

I don't like being locked into a contract, especially since in Canada they're 3 years. For that reason alone it's not worth going for the subsidized phone, for my needs anyways.

well... considering the only carrier branding is on the back cover... if you buy a replacement battery door, you'll have a note 2 that looks like the international one...

Maybe for you... I've got to pay full retail for mines ($650-$700) and if you think about it, that's how much you pay too over the length of your contract (don't get fooled by marketing tricks... that's why I despise american carriers.)

But you still need service of some kind, which isn't free. I pay $48/month for seemingly unlimited rollover minutes (like 3000+) and 5gig of tethering data (200 texts) and free M2M on ATT. I have a company discount.
I know many readers are't in the US and don't have an add a line, but it's very cheap for me to keep ATT, contract or not. The monthly fee is higher every where else for me.
I mean I get the "well you are paying $2,000 for that phone!" arguments, but really you need to add in the cost of any service unless you are using it 100% on wifi (which nobody does). Add that in with a full non-contract price phone and then post.

Well, I'm on T-Mobile's Value plan which is a 2 year plan w/o any subsidies but you save enough for 1.5 phones... although your plan sounds pretty decent... either it's grandfathered or you've got some sick company discount, but in either case, the phone wouldn't be $300 for you... that would require a 2 year commitment (not sure how they handle grandfathered plans)

Well, do you think they'll be interchangeable? Weren't the back covers different between the AT&T and International ones different? (Looked the same but weren't interchangeable)

Yep, the only reason. I can understand why it's a great thing for people to use LTE, but personally I have wifi everywhere I go and I barely use my monthly data. Even though in some cases LTE can be faster than wifi, wifi is plenty fast for anything you wanna do. So I prefer the international version for development support. But the development for the LTE versions shouldn't be too bad either since they're using the same SoC.
For me HSPA+ is plenty......haven't been on a contract in 4 years. Straight Talk service is LEGIT everywhere i go.....so besides getting the phone early, that is the reason i buy unlocked. Could really care less about carrier branding.

Which phone are you talking about? I think the Note II should be safe as the only thing they added between the models was just a different LTE chip (or not even if it was just a matter of flashing a new radio). I mean everything's pretty much the same in terms of specs so they didn't do any radical re-engineering, also the flip covers also replace the back cover, so if you get one of those that should remove the branding (at least on the T-Mo and AT&T ones, who knows what the Verizon one will look like). Just don't buy a fake as the NFC chip is in the back.
