RandomROM 2.3 v2 "Hawk" - Epic 4G General

Greetings All,
I've been running the title line ROM for several days now and am impressed with it in general. This sucker uses next to nothing in terms of juice when the screen is off and when my Epic is "sleeping". I've been getting an average of 38 hours with my useage; by comparison, on stock I would be lucky to see 22 hours. On SRF ROMs for example, I would average 28 hours (which I was pleased with)...but got bit by the damn flashing bug and, as much as I say "hmmm, I'll stick with this one", well
It's pretty important for me to get a minimum of 24hrs of battery time on my phone due to my schedule, convenience (or lack of) with charging opportunities away from home. SRF ROMs have been really good for that; Hawk has garnered 10 more hours, most excellent.
The flash went great, no issues, I haven't experienced any FC's, the apparent memory leakage has been minimal, and most everything I need to work does. My data speeds (using EG22) are the same crappy speeds, tried EF, EG and EH modems that were either worse in some area or battery drainers. The ROM itself is snappy, good looking, and did I mention the battery life is great?
I only have one issue: A couple of apps I use to have are no longer "available" on the provided version of the market ("Black Market"). One of them is a paid app that I used every day, is pretty important for my job and is kind of a deal breaker (custom shift calendar/time tracking/scheduling app). I'm sure it has something to do with either the market version or perhaps even GB and not the fault of the ROM...so no slams whatsoever directed to it or to RandomKing.
Is it possible to flash a different Android Market version? I would imagine it depends on what phone signature it sees as to availability of apps(?).
Also, just as an aesthetic thing, I very much liked the on-screen keyboard that was provided with shane's Dark Horse theme...would it be possible to pull that apk, pop it into my system folder and run it on this ROM?
Anyways, great ROM RK (if you read this), thank you very much for your efforts. If I can get my app issue resolved, this will be my daily driver for quite some time.
Aww who am I kiddin'...it'll be my daily until that damn flashing itch overcomes my will

I am newish to the whole 'flashing' thing, but this is my third ROM and so far I am loving it much more than the others. Thanks RK!!
battery life seems great..
runs very smoothly
like the font
like that the kernel comes with the ROM
fast
haven't had any re-boot issues (that i know of)

do NOT quote me on this, but i had a similar problem back when i owned an OG droid. My market sucked balls and started to FC a lot, and sometimes when i would flash a new ROM it wouldn't see some apps. What i did was downloaded the default GAPPS zip and extract the APK and install it. easy, and it fixed this. also, with the keyboard thing, i'm not sure. i'd imagine you'd have to find a zip to flash it. but the keyboard is through an APK as well...so go to the system/app folder and extract it see if that works? again, don't quote me on this stuff, i'm probably totally wrong.

Have to agree. Fantastic rom everything works to perfection. Although my battery
life is not near what everybody claims.

Yes the font the snappiness of the phone even though the benchmarks don't equal
the performance.

yea. people claim to have like over 9000 hours of battery life. the only way i achieve this is by turning off 3g whenever i don't use it which is like, 60% of my day. he achieves the battery saving by disabling a lot of stuff that's kinda important to most. like email notifications and stuff...but meh, it works. Random Hawk is a beast. can't wait for his actual release once source gets leaked since this is Alpha.

Nice Rom
Been on this one for a few days. It's a good one.

Im at 15h 26m 55s and @ 53% battery life right now.
I started with fresh battery stats by booting to CWM and resetting the stats right after it was fully charged..
Wifi and email notifications are ALWAYS on. I spent about a half hour on the phone so far, turned alarm on, downloaded about 10 apps, played ~30 minutes of angry birds last night and checked my mail about every 20 minutes (when I was awake of course) Also spent some time texting.
Also OC'd to 1.2 Ghz

This is A LOT better battery life than I usually get.
The reason I am not connected to Wifi is because I just got to work and haven't logged into the network yet!

I have wifi, 3G, and 1 hour email notifications at all times. I only disable google sync. But that's only because I use stock mail rather than the gmail app and don't synchronize my calendar.

Well, I've got my issues resolved and this ROM is flyin'. Definately a keeper.
@Eddyballs
Went a 'round about way to get my missing apps installed (MyBackupRoot is a beautiful thing), now all is good. Keyboard was a bust...once I got the apk installed, it just FC'ed. No biggie. Went to the Market and got a GB keyboard (unthemed) and now it's somewhat to my liking (I don't care much for the Swype keyboard). Thanks for your input.
@turbosocks
Damn good numbers!
@ RandomKing
Thanks again sir for an excellent ROM. Can't wait to try your next build!

Stock email is good, but ya I've turned off google sync too and I get better battery life. Wifi's policy is great, and 3g is ok. Sometimes 3g uses more battery than wifi. Its odd but yea. Oh and I kinda hate to bring it up here, but since you're here Mr. RandomKing, the rom keeps resetting on me at times. I'll send a txt to someone sometimes and I get that triple vibrating thing, then my phone resets. Not fully but softly. It happens at random too, not just with txts.

Np, im just hating myself for not being that helpful. I wish I knew more. Someday, someday... but glad you got yourself up and running. If you want a better keyboard I can upload my flashable gb-kb? Its my favorite so far and its not stock either. Its modded

Request: Rom

Sorry that this post won't be very thorough, I made a decently structured post but then my browser crashed and I lost it :|
Lol so my main point is that a lot of people have a g1, and I think the best rom/firmware for it was RC.29.
1.5 really slowed the phone down and made the boot time very long.
And 1.6....eh.[developer wise though, YES!]
I would really like to see a developer make a custom rom for the g1 that is very basic I don't need a rotating screen that 1.5 brought, and at most for an on screen keyboard I'd only like to see the t9 keypad and even that I don't care much for, my g1's hardware QWERY is a beautiful thing.
But yea a very basic rom with very minimal options/features so the g1 runs quick, clean, and mean developed by someone who knows how to make the g1 FAST!
I hope you can get the just of this, I understand someone is going to say this unless I announce it, why don't I stay at rc.29 if I like it so much? Because I like my apps working more.
So thank you for reading this, and hopefully this post gains a lot of ground and want so a developer could make this happen
Besides I would think that stripping features from a g1 wouldn't be too hard
[Lastly that was in my other post, why do we still need a video recorder app in the drawer when its so easy to switch to from the camera? ]
No one else is with me on this? Lol sorry I guess if you feel differently.
It's just that I know in an emergency if I needed to copy down a license plate number or make a call I know my g1 would lag so bad and not open up core apps like messaging or the dialer on time.

Eh I did notice that RC29 did run alot smoother because I had to unroot and return my phone. But I think it's a step backwards. Most people probably have forgotten what it was like and have moved on. Sorry bro.

no offense... but i ran rc29 for about well about week ago it was not any smother infact it was slower and sucked my battery. i dont use screen ration you can disable it in spare parts and always use the hard keyboard and never have any widgets...although im thinking of messing with some (getting bored) but yeah dude run cm stables and over clock and bit ( like 348 to 568) and ur g1 will run smooth as butter. dont mess with swap and ect because i think it more trouble than its worth on cupcake (cough*)

Yea I am on the Cyan train, it seems that every other experimental build he puts out messes with my most needed app so I'm flashing all around. And it's ok no offense taken but I genuinely thing a stock phone at rc29 is super fast, I have had this experience and so has some of my other Android buddies on other forums.

i was thinking about this you would like use a ota rc29 right but have roted goodness right? things like apps to sd and and also having a lot of apps on phone can slow it down. and idk when i was using rc 29 becase i wanted to see if there really was any improvement and i was having to send the phone becase the mic went out. i had alot of forecloses in the stock messaging app i cant think of thing that would be running in the back ground on cup (that you cant disable or not use) that would slow it down. but you are right the original over clocked jf 1.5 was really slow at least when i tested it with neocore got repeatably worse frame rates. but with cm 1.5 builds with over clock to the same speed i got faster up frame rates and ran rc 29 for the heck of it and got the same as did on jf 1.5.

As a friendly gesture, tomorrow or the next I am going to load up the dreaming.nbh file in Bootloader and play around with the stock apps and I will get back to you with friendly results.
And I am going to try out Handcent before 1.5
And Twidroid.
My main frustration is just that if someone rear ends me and try's to run via driving I'd love to be able to snap a photo ASAP or break out the messaging app and write down the plate number, my phone lags so much [in my mind at least] I feel I'd rather have a very dimmed down Rom that can support apps on the 1.5/6 firmware.
Well see though :]
I know a lot of mods can fix my problems and some slow them down, but it leans more so on the class of the sd card really.

i hope to see what your results are. im really going to start looking into raw performance. when ever i can get some free time.
I'm back on rc.29 and I really like it, the only draw back to this is that apps I could pull up on 1.5 won't pull up now.
Like I can't pull up twidorids legacy edition thats >1.5
Or handcent
or chomp.
And it's kind of strange :/
I guess I should of prepared better and downloaded them before hand so they'd be in my history. [and no not even clicking view more apps from twidorid pulls up the legacy]
But the phonebook replacement app is there and it works very well.
Just over all a clean UI I love it.
The notifiation bar is solid, and personally it feels faster than an overclockecd cyan build to me.
Swiping between screens, pulling down notifications, the app drawer, opening and closing the screen.
And overall it's just so benificial.
When I'm in the market and I slide my phone open to type then go ahead and close it and search or search while open then close it it doesn't do that stupid **** that 1.5 does where it sets you back one action.
For example lets say I put in handsent.
That's wrong, nothing should pull up.
So ok go back, open the keyboard type in handcent and handcent pulls up, or cool.
Close the phone and it goes back to my results for handsent.
HOW LAME!
I haven't gotten the browser to auto refresh yet due to the lack of internal memory and cache issues, mind you I only have stock apps, but I've navigated between the market and messaging/texts which is already more then impressive compared to lock 2.0 almost clearing the cache and refreshing anything when used.
I love r.c. 29 and so should you, that's just the most bottom, factual, content buyer/consumer happiness attitude there is about the g1.
It's time a dev makes a rc.29 rom that can run 1.5/1.6 apps without adding fancy animation, onscreen keyboards and all that junk.
I might be interested in updating to rc.33 but I have never had luck finding that .zip file so if anyone wants to help out post it here please.
Going to see how well my battery does, it normally never last me more then 6 hours, usually craps at at 4 hours :/
But we shall see!
I tried to upgrade to stock rc.33 but the .zip was too small and failed to instal properly, so I used another .zip and apparently it was a JF rom for 1.5
It loaded fine, installed the radio, then did a few quirky things.
Kinda disappointing that I couldn't get to rc.33 but that's common for me lol.

Bye Bye Vibrant =(

So today I returned my Vibrant and removed my Nexus One from Ebay. It's sad that such a beautiful phone had to be returned but I couldn't cope with some major issues:
1) GPS (I dont care if there is a fix, it SHOULD work out of the box)
2) Laggy Market
3) Laggy Homescreen
4) Tethering issues (Using barnacle and IPad)
I will miss the screen... it was amazing... along with some of the features of touchwiz. However, the fact that TMobile confirmed that they will be launching an HSPA+ phone this summer makes me feel that much better about waiting to upgrade.
Let me get out my violin.

Feel better? Goodness it's like at least 5 people have to start this type of thread on every board I visit for any type of device. I can't wait for the usual people to come in and make this a 10 page thread
And when the TMO releases the new HSPA+ phone it will have a plethora of issues on its own, good luck
Just trying to save people the trouble from upgrading from their Nexus if they have one. Thanks for the violin though! ;p
I really don't set the point of these types of posts, so you are unhappy and experience issues that not everyone is. Does that mean I should annoyingly post about how great mine is working? My HD2 gave me problems everyday but I didn't post about it. My slide worked perfectly but I didn't post about it. Again gps is not everyone, I have tried the following apps:
Yelp
Yellow book
Find me
Places directory
Maps
Where
Layers
And google
ALL were able to find my location (locked)
Everything else hasn't happened to my phone yet
So really what is the point in posting that you are returning the phone, because I'm sure you have already posted the problems.

Oh man you should have seen the Evo 4G forums then. This is nothing compared to that.
If i'd've had a N1, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a Vibrant now. N1 to Vibrant is probably not that big an improvement, but G1 (even rooted) to Vibrant is HUGE!
Sorry you didn't like your Vibrant!
I personally have had none of those issues, in fact, I have had not one force close or restart, the phone has been on and running without a single hitch since the day it was released and I picked it up at the T-mobile store.
This has been the best out of box experience I have ever had with a phone, especially one that was just released.

I agree on both accounts. When we get 2.2 OTA or mod it will prove to be the best phone available.
Your patience (or lack thereof) got the best of you.phone had only been out a week. Name me one device that was perfect upon release? Take care and cya, I'll enjoy the vibrant for you =)

1. will work after OTA
2. Did you root? Haven't heard of significant issues pre-root
2. thats because it's filled with bulky widgets. Remove a few. I'm running 5 widgets (2 of the samsung ones) and a live wallpaper with no lag (did no lag fixes or anything)
4. Barnacle doesn't work without root. Doesn't work consistently with root because the phone just came out and they haven't added support for it yet. New hardware for a currently unsupported root feature. Hopefully it'll be included in 2.2, but if not, the tether programs should be updated soon.
I think you should have waited before getting the phone in the first place. Nothing come out perfect.
I also purchased the Vibrant to use as a wireless hotspot with my iPad. I am going to give it time. I probably wouldn't have upgraded from an N1 though.
I turned on the phone and I'm not kidding I went straight to ever screen and removed every widget and turned off all but one screen. I mean I really don't need 7 screens when I use the same few apps all the time.
I think the only issue's I've noticed is.
- Camera FC on me once.
- Antenna boucing all over the place signal wise. Full Bars, half bars, no bars. Who knows, but it still works.
I think the only rock solid phone I've ever purchased and it just worked was my old Side Kick. It wasn't fancy or flashy and of course doesn't do half the stuff that these newer phones do.
For me:
Notifications keep phone awake
I get FC when I try to add picture to contact
Slow market (rooted)
Antenna bars jump left and right, but it doesnt seem to effect the signal....
It's a genuine concern. Stop getting so defensive that people are having issues. Not everyone can afford to drop $500+ every two months on the latest and greatest. A new smartphone is an investment, and if it doesn't work as advertised, that's not the fault of the consumer. Also, keep in mind, 14 days is not a lot of time. We don't even know for sure if this is something that Samsung can or will fix.
Some of you are willing to accept that risk, and trust that a fix is coming. That's fine. Some of us are not as bold when it comes to such investments.
So, yes, we may get an announcement, by the 15th day, that everything is going to be fixed and we won't have to worry. But what if that announcement never shows up? What if they just shrug their shoulders and say, "Eh, good enough"?
Well, like I said, $500+ is a lot of money to gamble when it comes to the good faith of a corporation. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit nervous about them supporting this device properly.
I love my Vibrant, save for these reception issues with the various radios. I live in one of the best coverage spots in my city, and I've been having calls go straight to voicemail all week; my GPS takes 5 minutes to even lock, and when it does, the radius is 2-4 blocks wide; the compass does not work at all, and the phone will assume I'm driving and moving when I'm stationary because of these problems. As of today, it does not appear as if either company is acknowledging the issue. That said, if a statement isn't released soon, I'll be returning it to sit on the sidelines until a fix is announced -- as much as I'd miss the display.

It's just getting started. Not only that, when they return the phone it'll continue to pester on. Oh x -- x and x doesn't work, it's this and that.. no, I haven't exchanged it or I've gotten 5 already and it's not going to be fixed because once I do this, that happens.. and on and on and on and on and on and..

GB Impressions

Ok, aside from the bootloop issue upon install, I have to say so far, not bad. The blur aspect is definitely better, however I dont care for it any more now than I did before. The color scheme is quite visually appealing. Very much like lucid steel theme for fission. I would prefer the scheme from the fission gb theme but this is absolutely an improvement over the stock froyo appearance.
Overall system speed seems to be somewhat improved, and there is a big issue w/ launcher pro which sucks. with launcher pro there is some heavy lag in transitions and the general feel of the phone is kind of clunky and choppy. Without launcherpro, phone tends to run quite smooth. no status bar controls kinda sucks, and the reduced screen density w/o launcher pro is also kind of a downer, but overall im not going to complain. Its definitely progress.
One big downside I noticed after 2 days is battery life is very hit or miss. On fission 2.6.1, i was making it easily 1.5-2 days on a single charge. Yesterday I made it home with 40% left, today I was at 10% when i left work. I can attribute this heavily to Blur, but this is definatley somethign that a new fission or UD build should fix
I have to say that since the devs seemed to have abandoned the Fission project, I haven't looked back since upgrading to GB Blur. it's snappy and attractive and while it still has alot of the blur bloat i hate, root + ti backup makes things a little more manageable.
so far, i've managed to remove teh global unplug, task manager, the blur text messenger, backup asssistant and city id. my battery life is probably slightly better than it was on fission, depending on what i'm doing (games seem to destroy it).
we still have to recognize that this IS a leaked version and there are still some misses with the build. data services randomly failing, inability to make calls/send texts and the weird keyboard backlight issue. other than that, i've been pretty pleased.
I just upgraded yesterday and I am very happy with it

Seems he indicated he was looking at it, but made no promises of an updated ROM on teamdefuse's website, twitter, or this forum...
Did you see something else where he said he was specifically working on GB Fission?
I think GB for the D2 makes some major improvements, but I can't give up liberty for it. Just have to wait and see if Liberty GB comes out.

yeah i thought that topic came up when the sdk was made available, but nothing ever really came to light. i feel like after p3droid's recent tweets/posts, etc., the landscape has been drying up.
I got the impression from what p3 said that the devs were under some fire as google seems to be having second thoughts about open source, as well as unpaid tethering raising some eyebrows with teh carriers, which is understandable.
Hopefully once things get ironed out we'll see some ovens refire and some cool stuff gettin rolled out.
I'm still kind of split and definitely agree that gaming on gb is a battery killer in a huge way. Overall battery life is good, however i've had a few days where it just sucked down. Ive been off charge since 6am, 12 hours later with minimal-moderate useage i'm at 70%, however there have been days where I have used the phone way less and been getting charge warnings by 2pm.
Hopefully the official release will solve the rest of these issues.
All I can say is that I hope some custom ROMs are available for Droid 2 Gingerbread soon, because what I have now is buggy to the point of being frustrating. Besides being a memory hog, I sometimes lose my data connection for no apparent reason and my keyboard backlight doesn't always work. Also, even when I do have a data connection, my phone has problems loading web pages much of the time.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the screen sometimes randomly shuts off without warning.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
if you have an issue with the screen randomly shutting off try unchecked the in pocket detection setting. I found this was way to sensitive and would consistently shut my screen off in dimly lit areas.
yeah, battery life has become sketchy, like one day i'll make it through the day with 60% left with moderate useage, similar useage next day i'll be charging by noon. USB reboots have reared their ugly head in the last 48 hours to the point where im charging off of the wall outlet and seriously considering sbfing back to fission 2.6.1
To this point I haven't had any major problems whatsoever ...
Only thing is browser sometimes crashes ...batt life is amazing!
9hr shift on work barely drops to 70% with wifi always turned on moderate txt n web

SIgh WTF getting whitescreen ....cant get back to CWMR, tried every thing....wtf ..... is this bootlooping? NO MATTER WHAT I do can not get back into recovery.
I have a trick to acces any files but most of them seem corrupted? Im only guesing as there is now a "?" by the file icon.
I tried loading bootsrap recovery
phone appeared bricked. rebooted and again cannot get into recovery.
I laready had 2.3 rom ...did I miss something? IM usually pretty good on this stuff. Modded my hd2 and rooted my g2x no issues....what dee hell is dis sheot
(mods move if I am posting in wrong section)
SOB me having bad day...lol...just realised this is the dev thread not general...I suck .....POINTS!!!!!
EDIT:
AH HA!!!! I was able to get to CWMR by an interesting method! I had previusly DL mini task manager(took it off the market for some reason) and thats THE ONLY ap that was working!
so anyways in the info bar at top it was showing mini task coming up .... Somehow it was acting as a backup! (has any one else experienced this?) so I long tapped on bootstrap rec icon and voila! it asked if I wanted to go into bootstrap and of course I did and .....yes!!! thank you cwm i got to the recovery green screen!!
FIrst I tried Tpro recovery....would not work....tried loading bootstrapzip....nothing...so....I figure since all my shizzle is backed up through my google act I did a factory reset, wipe data, and redid the new GB hack.
VOILA! it loaded ! no bootloop! just had to re-register phone and accounts!
so I leave you with this narcissistic picture of myself....

Hey everyone,
I've been running GB and ZS for about a week now. The one thing that I noticed was that there isn't anywhere where you can turn off mobile data? Maybe I'm blind, but it's not in wireless and networks? Any ideas? If not, oh well. I still think I found something in GB that's keeping me from going back to 2.2. It's just as stable as 2.2 only faster! Anyways, cheers all!

[POLL] CM9: Worth it?

Alright, so in the last few days I've been complementing whether or not I should give cm9 another try (I tried it on alpha0, but too buggy). I'm aware of the bugs such as "The ringing of death" and others. Most of you are probably wondering "Why don't I just flash it now and see for myself?" While I am considering that, I'm not one that likes to flash things since it takes me time to get everything set up the way I wanted. I figured this way I'd save some trouble and also give others the chance to see whether or not the majority of users here enjoy it.
I've broken it down into reasons why I do and don't want to flash it.
Reasons why I do:
New apps compatible with ICS
The latest android version (along with its features)
Makes my phone feel new
Reasons why I don't:
Battery life (I just need it to last the day)
Video Playback artifacts (how frequent is this?)
Less features than CM7
So I made a poll to see whether or not I should go through with it, and to help those that are complementing the same thing.
Edit: Just realized in the poll I put "No" for the last answer. Meant to put "Neither" lol.
Honestly this poll is kind of a bash to the devs that put so much time and effort to bringing cm9 to our phone so yes its worth it.

Sorry if that's what it appears, but that wasn't my intention. CM9 is great, I respect the devs, and I can't wait to see its potential. I'm just not sure whether I want to flash it only because of issues ICS (not cm9) has. For example, battery life. Battery life on ICS in general is bad, but my question in that aspect is "HOW bad?". I've seen many mixed results with some awful battery life, some decent, etc. I just want to save people the trouble, and myself, of having to flash a ROM they're not sure is right for them just yet.

I know where you coming from but you need to remember its an alpha and everything isn't suppose to be fully functional yet although most things are. Consider it more like public bug testing. I need full functionality for business everyday so honestly I know not to try these builds during the week when I expect my phones features to be fully operational.

I know and I'm completely aware of what you're saying. I know it's an alpha, and I know there are bugs. I'm just wondering if the majority of users think I should use the alpha as a daily driver or just wait. That's really the issue. Whether I should just wait or not.
Video playback tearing and artifacts in recording can be a pain sometimes. I've noticed in youtube there's barely any tearing in HQ but the same can't be said for the built in video player (even HD videos tear). Call quality has improved with the recent changes but is still far from perfect. Battery life (for me anyway) has been just fine. I hardly ever get the "ring of death" but I've found it's not difficult or impossible to work around without having to reboot. Features are still missing but that will come as cm itself updates for cm9. Peformance and stability (again for me anyway) has been just fine and it seems to handle 3D graphics better than any rom I've ever used. Overall I've been able to deal with it being my daily driver and just waiting for updates. Of course I'm going to hope for certain things to come in due time but I'm overall more satisfied with cm9 than I was with cm7. If there's anything else specific you wanted to know that I didn't cover, ask.

Thanks this is exactly the kind of response I was looking for. I rarely use video recording so that's not an issue for me. The biggest thing was the battery life and I think I've decided to wait until alpha4, because I'll definitely flash when the "Ring of Death" is fixed. I make quite a lot of calls, and even though people rarely get it, I'd rather not have to deal with that. Once again, thanks for your response.
Just a question since I'm curious: What CM features have been implemented so far in CM9?
Pssh if you use an alternative kernel and uv like a son of a ...then battery life is decent, I usually pulled 8 hours with 3 hours of display and 2 hours of music note the screen time on was heavy it would be on 20 or 30 minutes at a time.....
On my 3500 I get 6 and a half display and 13 hours overall.. I did 22 hours with just 6 flat.
Just do it I have cm7 miui and tw nandroids and haven't gone back because I love this ROM so much, there are some tips to get things rolling and so forth... so be prepared to make modifications.
Id be happy to let you know how I have my phone setup to my liking and hopefully make this transition easy for ya

Thanks so much. I guess I'll do it over the weekend (Don't wanna get TOO distracted when I have homework haha). On a normal day, I just keep my phone on airplane mode during school, listen to music for about 2 hours, and then use my phone for half an hour before putting it on its charger when I get home. That usually brings it down to 60-70% depending on what I'm doing. If you have any battery tips, I'd be glad to hear some. (Other than the obvious ones, like lower brightness and stuff). Lastly, what is the "Ring of Death" exactly like? If I were on the phone with someone, would it be so annoying that they would be distracted by it? Just curious.
Edit: Forgot to mention...is restoring apps (and their data) via TB okay to do? I read in the blog that it's not recommended and to have a fresh start, but there's a few games and other apps where I would like to keep my data.
I have used it as a daily rom since alpha 0. On completely stock CM9 and i get 10-15 hours on a OEM battery. I have been blessed and haven't had any video issues ( i take a lot of videos of my 8 month old daughter).
Def. Not up to par with CM7 but with features and battery life but it's only in alpha. I enjoy seeing and appreciating the changes when updates come out. Also saying my Epic has ICS and yours doesn't is fun lol. My co-workers are begging me to completely redo their Epic. (never will happen, none of then know what the term root or odin mean).
Honestly my suggestion flash CM9 with stock kernel and see if you can make it a week or 2. If you can't then see if a 3rd party kernel will please your needs. Then after that if you feel you can't stand the interesting bugs then take the time and go back to CM7.

Honestly, I have never had the "Ring of Death". I haven't had really any bugs on mine. This, in my opinion, is the most stable alpha rom I've ran.
And yes TB works fine. That's how I restore apps w/ data.

Id start just turning off data that will save you a lot and you'll still be able to snext -sneak texting ftw
Don't use any third party apps for "battery saving" they don't work properly and drain more than anything. Keep your running processes low I only have settings and the keyboard running normally when you pull up running processes. Don't sync email manual push for notifications.
Use the dalvik heap tweaks to keep ram available and less battery use, disable touch sounds and lock sounds to keep from audio out from wakelocking. Forgot to mention my screen wasn't at the lowest % it was at least 30 or 40%.

backup ur rom and go for it. battry life on cm7 is not that muchbetter, imho. u could always tweak the settings or even use samurai kernel, and undervolt to maximize battery life. there is also numerous governors with thatand the stock kernel ghat u can playwith. its truly an awesome build. these devs have done some truly amazing work. if ur not convinced, restore ur backup

Ha this thread/poll does not bash devs. They work on CM9 for themselves, the prestige and the challenge of doing it too. They'd just use this as motivation. This is a good question. Anyways - I'm on cm9 now and am enjoying it more than I expected too. Battery life does not seem to last as long but I still get through the day. alpha3 seemed to work out some of the more annoying bugs (for me), like fixing the speakerphone.
Honestly, I'd make a backup in clockwork and then flash. Worst that happens you restore the backup.

Android 7 V.S Android 6 in Real Life

Hi to every lucky body that get android 7 final.i made this topic to share your results in android 7 and compare with yours in android 6..like camera..battery..speed..tanx and hope to be usefull and active topic??????
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Well, it's a tiny bit snappier, and a tiny bit faster overall.
The battery is better; I get 3:45 to 4 hours SOT in auto brightness, full location services with wireless scanning, google now on, google cards on, hot word on from any screen... the full google experience, for short.
It's better than I had with a variety of mods and ROMs on Marshmallow.
I especially enjoy the new notification center. I can read numerous full messages and emails right from the notification slide. Quite awesome.
And I thank the gods of Google for removing the stupid enlarged tiles for Wireless and Bluetooth, the most annoying feature ever.
Battery is not bad for stock but I get the feeling with all mods and tweaks and kernels and such android M was a bit better...
But it would be unfair to compare those two as M has been worked on for a year now... N is fresh out of the box so let's wait and see how much battery can be improved.
Other than that N is very fluent and fast. Up to now also very stable and offers some important options that used to be mods some years ago.
Camera... And such... Did not really compare but would expect them to be similar...

I haven't tried N yet, but I was reading a comment on Slashdot that led me to believe, that it included something similar to CM13 privacy manager ? Is this true? Do you now get to choose what apps get access to? Can you block them from wireless, cellular data?
^ This feature alone made me upgrade the wife's and kids tablets from Nexus 7s to Nexus 7 (2013)s so I could put them on CM13.

No, but you can do that from Data Usage in Settings, in M as well.
I've been using it for 2 days now. The doze feature is way better than that of M. I've noticed certain performance boost in games like asphalt 8 as the game used to lag after thermal throttling was active in M.
The usage is very very smooth, feels very light. I mostly love the quick settings panel as because it looks and is well organised than the previous version. It's just an initial build and its quite stable. I would say I am impressed and good to go with 7.0.
Well this was my perspective.
I think charging while screen is on is improved. Can someone confirm?

Not entirely sure... NExus 5x has quite some struggle with charging when screen on.
Under M there was almost no charging when screen was on and you did some browsing...
Might be slightly better under N... though I havent tested it long enough to confirm... Charging basically stopped when you used your phone constantly and not just for writing a text under M...
Nope, seems same like before.

Edit: it actually seems better, I'm using my phone on charger for about 10mins, and ampere measures around 1100mAh.
On MM it wouldn't go to more than 300mAh while screen on.

I tested it while playing a game (8 ball pool, not a resource intensive app) and the percentage went up atleast 2 to 3 % in roughly 5-10 minutes. It seems that it is improved. But we still need someone to look through the kernel's code or run a reliable test!
I have it on my 5x since it dropped was on dp5 before that. Official seems smoother don't really use the 5x since I got the s7.
I'm actually seeing what seems to be worse battery performance. I've eliminated a few apps that were troublesome, but it looks like the battery is draining faster than on "M". I'm hoping that it's simply a problem with the crappy cell signal in my office - my connection bounces between 27 different towers and it's still crappy at best.
Atleast for me, I can confirm that charging while screen on is finally fixed. Hail hydra!
As previously stated, it feels a lot snappier and lighter being on Nougat as opposed to Marshmallow. Quick Settings are better overall, especially when you're able to add custom quick tiles via apps in the Play Store. Only complaint about the Quick Settings is that the Wifi and Bluetooth used to toggle on press, then open mini settings when you clicked the text. Now it just opens mini settings. I can get used to that, though.
Oh, and I still hate the white background in the settings app. Haven't found any Layers themes that work well yet. If anybody else finds one, let me know.

Important, there are sorta probs about Substratum and Android N, such as make sure you wont apply it to Chrome and Documents for example. You'd get instant force close. And if there's any other app like that, you need to make sure it is off the list to get themed.
