I bet part of this was to stay competitive in the future iPhone market. I know there's only slight hints for an iPhone on Sprint, but I can feel it coming. The iPhone 5 will probably "only" be HSPA+ ready, but next year I'm sure it will be LTE ready. I very much doubt that Apple would build a WiMax version of the iPhone for only Sprint, and with Sprint's future looking bleak, they need every competitive advantage they can get.

That could definitely be a reason. Steve Jobs wouldn't approve a WiMax iPhone.

Well they need to something and i doubt its because of the iphone... Sure sprint has wimax but it Really can't compete with verizon LTE and the sprint 3g network is really slow compared to every other carrier... I am really curious to hear what they have planned... I want to be a sprint customer but i won't jump ship untill i can get consistently fast speeds like i have on tmobile

Their 3G was top notch for a while and LTE and WiMax would both be ****ty on the 2500 spectrum WiMax is on right now. LTE from light squares is going on 1600

But think about this. They are not going to be sinking any more money into Wimax now to expand it. And they are starting from scratch for LTE. By the time they even have enough LTE as they do Wimax (which still is not a lot) everyone else is going to be done building their LTE network. So basically Sprint is not going to have a good 4G network now for at least 4-5 years. So everyone get used to your slow data speeds. We are gonna have em for a while. Yay, way to go Sprint.

Your basing all this on the mistaken notion that Sprint is going to start building an LTE network from scratch starting right now.
Lightsquared has been working on this for a while and should launch next year.

Apple Exec's and Sprint Exec's do not like each other at all. Apple thinks Sprint is a 2nd rate wireless company going down the tubes. Sprint would not be willing to pay their royalty clauses that Apple wants. You like Iphone 4 or 5 you need to go to Verizon or At&T. Samsung & HTC phones have gotten so much better. It is real competition now to Apple. Until the relationship is repaired you will never see an Iphone on Sprint.

that's the Stratosphere and its not the D705 its the SCH-i405 and is similar in specs except for its depth and Bluetooth 3.0 versus our 2.1 and not to mention DLNA.

Yes, right now Sprint is only advertising to LTE phones, the Galaxy Nexus and LG Optimus S (or something LG). Once LTE starts the 2nd wave between May and December there will be a lot more LTE phones announced.

where are you getting your information from? by this quater or next the 1st rollout for LTE is Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Kansas City.
and because sprint is still fixing verizon towers well i doubt there will be 70 cities its probably the main major cities and wont be done till 2013 end of it so basically 2014. maybe by the end of this year they'll have 30 possible cities.

Each area listed in the rollout really encompasses many cities. For instance in wave 2 starting in May it lists Orlando but clicking on that link you find Orlando really includes about 8-10 cities including Daytona and Holly Hill where I live. So that is what is meant by 70 cities by the end of 2012.

It'd be a real dilemma to have to subsist on 3G (which is pathetic in many Sprint areas) when getting an LTE phone if all you have is WiMax 4G in your area for the foreseeable future. I hope I can make it to the end of 2012 with the Epic, letting my contract expire and so on. Lot of uncertainty with Sprint these days, although I'd like to stick with them if I can.
When are we getting a slider? The real question should be when are we getting ANY new phone lol. We are in a major phone drought right now while everyone waits for the lte rollout. Ugh...

If VZW had a decent slider, I would have jumped ship a while ago. Droid 4 isn't much better than what we have (actually, worse), so staying with Sprint.
The Epic 4G came out in August 2010, so hopefully the 2-year anniversary yields an awesome new slider phone with:
- 4G LTE
- 4-inch+ screen
- 8MP+ camera
I will ditch my Epic 4G in Q4 2012 or Q1/Q2 2013 depending on Sprint's LTE coverage and Clearwire's planned LTE rollout. If Sprint gets rid of its unlimited data plans, then I may jump to Verizon.
unfortunately att and verizon are just to expensive. the plans are way more than sprint & tmobile. But push come to shove i may jump to att. they are slightly less expensive than verizon and i may get a discount for having uverse tv & internet.
this lack of phone options from sprint is getting really old.

There's a newer article out. Reporting it is indeed finished and should be announced today. I'll find the link. But apologies if this doesn't belong I see much more "off topic threads" here Luke I want a GS3 blah blah figure this is somewhat on topic. As the OG EVO WAS a Sprint exclusive and so at one point every EVO was configured or running on Sprint. While I'm sure many of them (me for one) are still on Sprint and this could have a large impact on people. Again if I violated anything a MOD can surely close this or move it to where it belongs.

I think this is a great thing for Sprint on the short term, kind of skeptical if it will be good for us consumers in the long run. I also find it somewhat sad that one company that has some sizeable debt, has just purchased a controlling share in another company with even greater debt, and I believe must of had to make this deal on credit.... Yea I'm leaning the same way after more looking into. Hopefully this can be the influx of cash Sprint needs to.build the new networks faster and start drawing more customers. This^ Unlimited everything (besides land line calls) is amazing. Not to mention their plans are cheaper. The only thing left, IMO, to get more people to move over is to get more 4g coverage. I know they are expanding more...and I just heard I'm getting 4g by me which I didn't think would come for a few more years so that's a plus for me
As long as this buy out doesn't run Sprint into the ground, then it should be a good thing.

BTW, this is LONG from 'finished', this is just the announcement of the agreement... there's still a LONG due diligence period that is only now starting along with required regulatory reviews. I doubt this will be 'finished' until 2nd quarter 2013, if not later.

You get what you pay for. Sprint's 4G is lacking and so is their 3G speeds. Getting consistent performance is out of question. Yeah the data is unlimited but that's it. Verizon has family share plans for $40/phone and shared data starting at $50/month. You could spend anywhere from $15-35 a month depending upon your data usage but Verizon at least in Los Angeles is worth every penny. Sprint will be nowhere near that kind of coverage for the next couple of years and I am tired of signing contracts based on promises of better data.

Yeah what-ever, I'm pulling on average 17-20MB/sec down on 4G and no less than 1.5 on 3G. Verizon locks down bootloaders worse than Sprint has ever contemplated, and just wait till you go a few gigs over your "allowance" and get hit with the 2-3 hundred dollar overage. Everyone I know on Verizon complains, but to each his own.

I've been with Sprint for a long time and really wish the 4G coverage was better but when you lose to metropcs in a major market then that is a problem.

I'm pretty sure Softbank wanted Sprint to be in control of clearwire as per the agreement. But like it was mentioned the Grand ole Government still has to give the ok for this so it'll be at least 6+ months.
I also have to side with Jamie here I had Verizon for a while (pre-smartphone days) and their service was great but lately as a huge Root fan I'd never go back. They are locking down the bootloaders on so many of the best devices like he SG3 and another one I'm forgetting but they have plans to lockdown more in the future. And while Sprint isn't the biggest Root supporter they at least leave that door unlocked. nd once they get the LTE network built out speeds WILL improve, we already have it here in Baltimore and my buddies Gnex is pulling a consistent 20-25mb/sec which for us Sprint users is Freaking a god send lol. Combine that will never having to worry about Data which I use about 5-7 gb/month I'm sticking right there with them. Until they are a huge success or die off lol

Cool story! I dropped sprint strictly because coverage in my area was very spotty. I have no regrets about it and if they fixed the network I'd go back in a heart beat...I just got tired of hearing about how my market was always next in line...blah blah blah. I also have no issue with verizon. The phone I picked was easily unlocked... that is more research based..all carriers should have a Google phone that can be unlocked. Data is not an issue...WiFi is every where anyways...even at the gym. I pay just as much now as I did with sprint... but dont drop calls...and since I am military and have a wife at home with my kids...an on demand call is a must. I also know Verizon has the better freq. Band... sure in the higher MHz you will get faster speeds..but the coverage area isn't as big...its all give and take. I am rooting for sprint...but just got tired of waiting....I love capitalism and choice...so I switched to who I feel deserved my money!

I think LTE should be open and there needs to be a global standard. All these fragmented LTE networks is a farce.
As for CDMA...lets face it. Its not a global standard, and therefore open devices are not friendly with such things.

Yeah, they've already confirmed no LTE this year, so I doubt they'd bother with CDMA.

My plan: run up roaming data and hope they catch on and get out ETF free and sell my gnex if they allow me to keep it.
Worst case scenario is I get Verizon speeds
Whoa there! Hold up a minute. Google didnt say anything about Sprint not getting the Nexus 4. What they said is first they concentrate on producing phones for open standards and the carriers that use them (more or less). Since Sprint uses cdma instead of gsm, they just arent in the first batch of releases - and neither is Verizon as they too are cdma. I guarantee this will play out almost the exact same way the Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus S for Sprint did - they wont have it this fall, but will start carrying it next spring. This is just the way Nexus devices play out for Sprint, unfortunately.
There are certainly enough reasons to leave Sprint (I plan to go back to T-Mobile personally because Sprints coverage is poor in every area I've tried), but the Nexus 4 isnt one of them. They will get it, you just have to have a few more months of patience than the gsm folks do.

If they wait till spring, they will have the Samsung Galaxy S 4 to compete with... may be a hard sell...
I hate CDMA networks. 1 year left and I'm out!

I was thinking about getting this device until I found out that it wouldn't work on Sprint.
Sprint like always will be late to the party. Same with the nexus S 4G and the G-Nex...hold tight, well get some Nexus 4 love...hopefully with bumped storage since itll no doubt be thicker than the GSM version maybe by spring time?

I'm extremely disappointed sprint won't be getting the nexus 4. Whether that is the carriers fault or googles, it sucks royally. I'm stuck in a contract and have 5 business lines, so its not like I can easily jump to another carrier any time soon. What do you guys think??

Sorry but why would anyone care if you choose to buy it or not?

I'm not asking anyone to be sorryor to care. As the title of the thread states, "are you mad" or disappointed if your in a situation like myself. Seeing your from turkey why the hell would you even comment? Unless you have sprint over their. Lol

Anyone have recent experiences with either? Obviously, I am on sprint, but was thinking of making the switch. It would probably save me around 60 a month from sprint since I have two lines...and thats even with my discount with Sprint. Basically, I just want to know about service and coverage in general. Was there a difference in signal between the two in your everyday activities? I still want a slider phone and you can get a cheap and clean mytouch 4g slide for around 150. I want to stay with the slider and the upfront cost of the phone and savings with tmobile would pay for itself in 5 or 6 months. Plus i do not think a decent slider will be released anytime soon. Thoughts? Thanks in advance

I convinced my girlfriend to switch to TMobile from at&t. She gets decent downlink speeds on their hspa+ (about 12mbps in certain areas) and her coverage is pretty good. Sprint sucks in my opinion, having been on their network in the past and having reports from my brother (also on sprint). I would switch, especially if it will save you money and you don't have an etf.

The photon Q really wasn't a bad phone. It just never took off
HTC ONE! Everything your phone isn't!
I love T-Mobile. In my area they blow sprint completely out of the water. Fastest download speeds ive had werr around 15-16 mbps wherr with sprint in the same places od get 300kbps...only thing i dont like about T-Mobile is the truly unlimited plan is 70 per month.
Also if you get the My touch MAKE sure its the HTC one. If not your throwing money away.

I have no experience with T-mobile but I absolutely hate sprint speeds and plan to jump ship as soon as my contract is up.
T-Mobile is good if your in an area with decent coverage. But they are areas coverage isn't good. Where I live it is great. Even in smaller rural towns. Seemed to be similar in Arizona and California. Went to Michigan and it was horrible in Lansing. All depends on your area.

Yeah...that's what I've been reading. Do you think the htc 4g slide is still a decent phone? I know they are still pretty active with the development of it. But it is almost two years old. But it is a hard deal to pass up for 150. I think the newest tmo slider is the Samsung relay, but the support for it is small.
Yeah, sprint service is hit or miss by the day and the data is really slow. Coverage really hasn't been an issue with sprint as it has been great, but the data speed varies tremendously.

Well its def better than the off brand myTouch lol.
But in all seriousness they have tons of ports most of them have broken features. And that's not taking a shot at the Team SwArM because I am still with them just haven't devved in a while.
Battery life on the newer JB ROMs will suck some juice at a rate of up to 2% per few minutes of screen on time etc. And with every release of Android it will be like that (aosp).
Sliders are dying man, the relay was a fail...does it even have a dedicated forum topic yet?
*Go Nexus and never look back *
