I bet part of this was to stay competitive in the future iPhone market. I know there's only slight hints for an iPhone on Sprint, but I can feel it coming. The iPhone 5 will probably "only" be HSPA+ ready, but next year I'm sure it will be LTE ready. I very much doubt that Apple would build a WiMax version of the iPhone for only Sprint, and with Sprint's future looking bleak, they need every competitive advantage they can get.

That could definitely be a reason. Steve Jobs wouldn't approve a WiMax iPhone.

Well they need to something and i doubt its because of the iphone... Sure sprint has wimax but it Really can't compete with verizon LTE and the sprint 3g network is really slow compared to every other carrier... I am really curious to hear what they have planned... I want to be a sprint customer but i won't jump ship untill i can get consistently fast speeds like i have on tmobile

Their 3G was top notch for a while and LTE and WiMax would both be ****ty on the 2500 spectrum WiMax is on right now. LTE from light squares is going on 1600

But think about this. They are not going to be sinking any more money into Wimax now to expand it. And they are starting from scratch for LTE. By the time they even have enough LTE as they do Wimax (which still is not a lot) everyone else is going to be done building their LTE network. So basically Sprint is not going to have a good 4G network now for at least 4-5 years. So everyone get used to your slow data speeds. We are gonna have em for a while. Yay, way to go Sprint.

Your basing all this on the mistaken notion that Sprint is going to start building an LTE network from scratch starting right now.
Lightsquared has been working on this for a while and should launch next year.

Apple Exec's and Sprint Exec's do not like each other at all. Apple thinks Sprint is a 2nd rate wireless company going down the tubes. Sprint would not be willing to pay their royalty clauses that Apple wants. You like Iphone 4 or 5 you need to go to Verizon or At&T. Samsung & HTC phones have gotten so much better. It is real competition now to Apple. Until the relationship is repaired you will never see an Iphone on Sprint.

Epic - Evo,last of the wimax 4g headsets?

Not sure if you guys been reading about Sprint and how they will switch over to LTE sometimes in 2011. But in any case look like the number of wimax headsets are going to be limited to only a 2 or 3 headsets (HTC-Knight). What you guys think about this and does it only mean we're going to have to hold on to our Epic a bit longer till the new LTE headsets are available?

Sprint isn't going to drop Clearwire and their WiMAX network. They plan on integrating the Nextels 800 MHz spectrum, the 1.9 GHz network and Clearwires 2.5 GHz network. They will then roll out handsets that can take advantage of all of these network bands.

Haha. Verizon LTE sucks. In their tests they were getting less than 10mbps with no congestion. Don't pass on wimax just yet clearwire and sprint are releasing new markets all the time. It will take just as long for verizon to roll out their LTE and everyone will get IMO 2-3mbps until they can figure out what they are doing.

Less then 7mbps? What was WiMax on it's low range, because Verizon's LTE was 7-33mbps. 7 was the low. I've read some reports of Verizon's LTE service hitting in the 50mbps on the download and in the 20's for upload.
Personally, I'd rather have Sprint change over to LTE ASAP. This way, since AT&T and VzW will both be on LTE, we can get better coverage due to roaming.
BTW, isn't Sprint's Wimax locked at 2-6mbps with possible busts to 10 or 12 mbps? If you think about it 2-6mbps is 3G already is, so why pay the extra $10 for marketing?

So you know, the reason why wimax is so slow on sprint is:
1) They cap it
2) They are not using their full spectrum in the 2.5ghz band...in that band from what I read they got 30mhz spectrum and right now only using 10mhz...Verizon only has 20mhz spectrum and using it all for LTE...but they opted to use the extra 10mhz in a way that will give better speed but lower capacity...hence the tiered plans...

You do know that AT&T and Verizon are going FD-LTE while sprint would end up going TD-LTE...so they will only be able to "roam" if the equipment supports both and on the right bands...
----------
As sprint is using only 10mhz for wimax, my guess is they will use the remaining 20mhz for TD-LTE..if you read the news sprint is working with some companies to create a better way of pickign up signals on multiple bands..aka if they end up full switching to TD-LTE it would end up seamless...you wouldn't even notice it..
I personally think going wimax was not a bad idea..its just that sprint messed it up completely...2 things that come to mind are:
1) EVO was a failure..simply because they could not keep it in stock..sprint should have had multiple manufacturers making 4g devices and say released the Epic and EVO together...instead they lost millions by having HTC fail to deliver the stock.
2) Completely failed utilizing their partners..I mean they got comcast and many other cable providers as a partners...they could have used that and made airwave boxes built into the cable and offer quadruple play with cell phones.

I was just at starbucks that's 100ft from a 4G tower and I was getting 2mbits/1.2mbits down/up and outside I was getting 5mbits/1.2mbits with a clear line of sight. When I had a G1 I was getting 3-4 with a max of 6 mbits in the same spot. So no, wimax doesn't work that well in the real world. I use it more than most people and it sucks about 95% of the time. Using it while you're moving is a joke too.

Was the antenna on the tower facing directly at you? how many bars did you have? what radio were you using? who provided the equipment for the tower in question? what were you using to speedtest? how far away was the server? what was the latency?
I am in NY, I get around 7mbp/sec on 2 bars, 4mb/sec on 1 bar...and as you can guess the there are a lot of interferences and a whole lot of people using 4g..so its as "real world" as it gets..

Capped? From what I hear, only the upstream is capped at 1mbps, download is wide open. Clearwire (CW) also hold around 150mhz of spectrum in the 2.5ghz frequency. The problem is 2.5ghz is terrible for building penetration and it's going to cost more to setup all these addition sites to get the any decent indoor coverage. Also, even though Sprint owns majority stakes in Clearwire, how does it help Sprint, when it now looks like Sprint is getting ready to ditch Clearwire for their LTE testing?
BTW isn't CW now trying to sell some of that 150mhz of spectrum they hold to try and stay a float? I don't know how much of it is up for sale, but I don't think all this talk of spectrum will mean much of anything to the average consumer since Sprint doesn't own it, it looks like Sprint is now trying to get away from CW, and VzW has LTE up and running well on what they spectrum have.
As for FD/TD LTE, my understanding is that TD-LTE is already interoperable with FD-LTE, so it looks like Sprint is on the right track if they go TD-LTE. The only issue I see with Sprint roaming on ATT/VzW is roaming contract issues and Sprint would have to make sure they have a 700mhz radio in any LTE device, in addition to whatever frequency they plan on using for their LTE setup.
One question ... doesn't FD-LTE give better upload speed?
I have used wimax in 3 different markets now. Portland, Oregon, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia. In all three markets I would sometimes get as little as 3 mbs down but normally would get between 6 and 8. This is right in the area verizon says their lte will reside but again there is zero real world experience to prove this.
As far as roaming on lte goes it is not likely to happen. Both because all the carriers use different frequencies and because the carriers are going to want to protect their advantage in deploying 4g. From my experience wimax works great and lte has not yet been tested.

I'm in NYC as well. The antennas are omnidirectional, 3 bars, stock, clearwire?, tethered laptop and speedtest app on phone, NY so pretty close, anywhere from 70ms to 150ms. The second you step inside any building signal drops at least 1 to 2 bars. Wimax is a gimmick to me and I don't think it'll succeed once more reliable technologies (possibly LTE) become implemented.

Sprint switcing from Wimax

Well as many of you read on Engadget about Sprint switching from WiMax to LTE. Well naturally being curious, while I was stopping by my parents house on the way home I asked my dad who worked in telecom for most of my life doing contract work for Sprint. He now has since moved out telecom to some other department, but he still keeps up with his telecom friends who do contracting work for Sprint. Anyways back to the point I asked if these rumors were true. He said Yes they are switching from WiMax, but not to what and that Samsung is providing the equipment. If i find out anymore information I will let you know.
i dont really know anything about the 4g radio in my evo, but would it still work on LTE?

There aren't phasing out WiMax yet from what it sounds like, but since the Evo 4G wasn't designed with LTE in mind then no the LTE won't work on the Evo.

but does this mean that they are going to stop expanding the 4g network, and focus only on getting LTE up in more places? this is kind of a kick in the balls for people who just bought 4g capable devices with sprint.
They'll probably continue to expand and run Wimax on 2.5 Ghz and run LTE in parallel on 850 Mhz.
The way I understand, you would be able to swap out cards in the towers to swap out from wimax to lte... At least on new towers. Is that true?

No offense but you have like 5 posts Including 2 in this thread, and you've been a member here just as long as I have pretty much...I'll believe it when I see it, and as ruge said, the evo will be the compare to as the nextel chirp phones back in the day and the razor, obsolete, trust me, no evo will have lte
the Evo 2A will have lte, I promise
Edit: I am changing this because I read this post wrong. You are right they are about to use Samsung products on the new towers but its not to change wimax, it is to make the towers more efficient and smaller. From what I was told they will use new technology which will allow them to add all services on one tower and be able to free up frequency to build out. It would not be imho to drop wimax because they will be the only ones to utilize it giving them an advantage in developing. Back on topic he is correct they are making upgrades and using new hardware within the towers but I think its imho to have voice/data simultaneous on a cdma network (a first) and they will do it with wimax 2 starting 2012...(that is just my opinion)

I believe I know the article you are referring to as it was in another thread on here and discussed the new PTT service they will use once IDEN is turned off and it will include more speeds and the likes for data.
The way I took the article was that the new PTT phones will take advantage of the new network upgrade they are performing i think its called Sprints Network vision. The multimode base-stations will be the key to it all.
In the end the change allows them to use all the networks more interchangably from what I understand.
I would not expect them to keep the 800MHz band for CDMA PTT. they stated that CDMA PTT phones will be out late this year and if thats the case and they were planning on having them run on the IDEN 800MHz band wouldn't IDEN need to be shut off first? I take it as the CDMA PTT phones will run on the regular network and use data form the 800MHz once they deploy LTE on that. they can't put WiMax on the 800MHz b/c WiMax isn't provisioned in that spectrum at this point.
As I stated in my edited reply it would not make sense to use technology the others are using because it would not make good marketing. Also wimax 2 will be out second quarter or half this year, can't recall, and around the exact same time frame for those new phones. Also the new hardware being supplied to sprint and their new plan is at the core of what wimax 2 is. Which is stated to give better download speed and efficiency thru multi data channels. The company supplying the hardware, Samsung, also The first company to test wimax 2 and said it got 130mbs download, but that's with no one else testing it. But you get the picture.... I hope

[Q] IPhone to sprint?

I was at a sprint store this weekend and one of the reps. there told that sprint might get the iPhone at thebend of the year. Can anyone confirm this?
There is no official confirmation but it is a rumor that Apple is going to release an iPhone 4S at the end of August that will also be on Sprint and T-Mobile. We will see.
I personally don't think Sprint's network could handle it.
That's the rumor. It's not confirmed by any stretch of the imagination, but from Apple's standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. Apple is getting beat in the US by Android, and wants some of those Android sales. Plus, it looks like the next iPhone will have both radios (gsm/cdma), so it can release one phone for all networks. Now, whether you could unlock the phone to go from Sprint to AT&T, or Verizon will remain to be seen...assuming the rumors of a Sprint and T-Mobile iPhone are true...
God, I hope not. Sprint's 3G data is slow enough as it is, I can only imagine how an iPhone would perform on it. So unless they're planning on ramping up their 4G game or signing some major roaming agreements nationwide, might as well stick w/ an open-source Android!
Besides an android is so much more better than an iPhone. Why would you want that garbage?

Sprints new network questions.....

After reading the announcement from this mornings strategy meeting I have a few questions bouncing around in my head. Was wondering if anyone here might know the answers. First, and most important, what happens to all the phones that are currently set for their 4g? Will they still work on the new network or is the change in band only for the 4g? I.e. if I were to buy a epic touch 4g would I still have 3g and the end of 2012 or would I have to buy another handset?
Secondly, wtf? Where did all the money go that I/we have been pouring into sprint for the 4g that most, myself included haven't been receiving? Is that the money that sprint just announced it would be spending to buy into apple? That's not what I signed up for.
Rant over.

They are committing to selling WiMax devices all though next year which implies support for much longer although they currently only have in place agreements with clearwire through the end of next year.
A crazed lady at the end of the call pissed the hesse and others off by questioning that they knew nothing about clearwire potential bankruptcy since they are 54% stake holders in the company. My take away is that sprint plans for Clearwire to fail and take the spectrum for themselves in bankruptcy court.
Oh but the epic 4g touch would take advantage of the 1x advanced 3g technology, but for 4G you are stuck with WiMax.
They said they'd continue to support WiMax. I would think eventually it would get phased out many years down the road, but if you don't have WiMax right now, I wouldn't expect it in the future (which sucks for me). At least LTE is supposed to be done by the end of 2013 and they start selling LTE capable handsets about the same time my contract is up. Any desire I had to upgrade early to the Nexus Prime (if it even lands on Sprint) or the Epic Touch just went out the window. I'll wait until I can get an LTE handset as my Epic is more than fine in the meantime.

Exactly the argument that I was making. It would be pointless for anyone to buy new phones at this point. Which sucks because I really wanted to buy the epic touch or the nexus.
Basically they are writing checks that they can't cash. And they are going get it because they are practically forcing people to get new phones. They have announced 20 billion to be spent on apple over 4 years and now the new network which will cost who knows how much.

Agreed, I've got no desire to upgrade right now. I don't really even understand how an iPhone user could justify coming to sprint. 3G will continue to be slow and if you buy an iPhone now, you are locked into 3G until 2013. It may keep some people with upgrades from leaving sprint though.
It looks like they will be continuing to support WiMAX until at least the end of 2012. They didn't really say what is happening after that, but I'm guessing that they'll still have significant WiMAX coverage through most of 2013.
From engadget:
The company plans for a rapid deployment of this new 4G network, with the first LTE markets and handsets to hit in mid-2012, and the full rollout mostly completed by 2013. Current subscribers signed up for WiMAX plans won't have to worry as their devices will continue to be supported throughout 2012.
and
By the end of next year, Sprint aims to have a combined WiMAX/LTE population coverage of 176 million -- with 123 million covered by LTE and 76 million overlapping both. When the network build-out is nearly complete in 2013, the company should have over 250 million blanketed in LTE, far outstripping the stagnant 120 million served by WiMAX.

Are you kidding? None of the iphone variants support 4g? The only difference is the att version supports HSPA+, which is certainly not 4g.
Also, nearly every phone sold will be upgradeable to 1x advanced, which considering this advanced 3g tech can reach speeds as fast or faster than current wimax, i don't think you'll be missing out on alot

This statement is a little inaccurate, as the statement made was that wimax devices will continue to be SOLD through 2012. As with nearly every cell technology, you can expect to still be able to utilize it for a long time.

One thing you need to remember is that this cost is spread out, so about 5bil a year, and sprint is nearing the start of the lightsquared deal, which will PAY sprint money...the figure i can't remember, but I think it was close to that same cost. So effectively, they may only be paying for the network upgrade.

That lady was a complete idiot. She argued against sprint spending 6bil on a new LTE network (that's nearly half complete mind you) when it would only take 600mil to upgrade clearwires network to LTE. What she seriously failed to understand is that clearwires total footprint is much less than 1/10th of the projected total footprint that will be covered by sprint's 1900mhz lte, and therefore this is more cost effective. She sounded like a typical misinformed PTA member.

Just go about your business and buy phones when you need them and stop worrying about this bs and people will come to sprint for the iphone cuz they will want unlimited data. I would not be with another carrier simply because I would go over 2 gb every month and f**k a $200 + every month that's just retarted

Sprint just slapped a limit on "wifi tethering" data to 5GB. What makes you think they won't do something similar to "handset" data once iPhone users come crawling around the corner?
I really think that was a step in the wrong direction for Sprint considering what people already pay to get wifi tethering... Now they have to pay the same price and get a big fat limit on their service... Not even grandfathered in to the new policy either
Cuz the unlimited data is the only reason that new iphone users would stay. During the strategy meeting dan hesse said over and over that sprints brand is unlimited data and they are changing the rest of the company to fit that brand. So honestly you have nothing to worry about as far as your phone goes

Thought this was discussed before but seeing that lte was such a big thing about the GN, i'm willing to put money on it being lte. Especially since sprint will be doing their upgrade to lte, why have such a top of the line, cutting edge phone on a network that's going bye bye?

Well i hope it is LTE. However i hope it doesn't make sprint release it late when lte finally rolls out.
If it doesn't come LTE ready then its probably a sales tactic. If it doesn't get rolled out til mid 2012 (LTE) then it wouldn't surprise me ifthey didn't have it.

When did u get a nexus s?
Also i think the could maybe release it earlier if it didn't have any 4g and just 3g.
is it possible for a phone to be both LTE and WiMax? because if not, and Sprint's actually getting this thing next month, there's no way it'll be an LTE device. Sprint won't have LTE ready for the better part of a year at the earliest.
My gut feel, for the timing of it, is that it won't have any 4g. 6 months ago that would have been crazy, but it wouldn't look as bad now sitting on the shelf next to an iPhone.

Ya i forgot the 3g only option in the poll
Sammy hax the wimax antennas and they got to get rd of them. Wimax has to stay around for a year or better for the people with phones and hotspot cards for home and laptops. Unless there is only one version of the prime, I think they will get there own flavor with wimax.
Got to justify the $10 extra right?
Specs for Galaxy Nexus Prime say LTE and Hspa, no WiMax. Unless they are going to build a special one for sprint 4G will be out of the equation for awhile. Here:
http://www.google.com/nexus/#utm_campaign=us&utm_source=ha-bk&utm_medium=sem&utm_term=+nexus +prime
at first i thought no wimax but it would be stupid to put a lte radio when its going to costs sprint extra money. i am positive they have an inventory of wimax radios they need to get rid of.
It's going to have an LTE radio.
There's no way that they're going to make a special device with Wimax just for Sprint [Now that Sprint has declared Wimax dead] and there's no way that it's not going to have a 4g option [Considering being LTE/HSPA+ capable was part of the presentation]
Being as LTE is right around the corner for Sprint, it's a good selling point too.
I will eat my own head if Sprint releases an LTE phone with functioning LTE network anywhere by Spring 2012.

That's cool. Sprint never said "Spring 2012"
They said "midyear 2012"
Also, couple of replies to this:
1) If you fully understood Network Vision you would understand why it is going to be very easy for Sprint to reach it's goal of 120 million LTE covered by the end of next year.
2) And really more importantly, if you completely understood Network Vision you would realize that LTE really isn't that important.
The speeds delivered by their 3g coverage, with the roll out of Network Vision, will be more than sufficient enough to not validate wasting the significant battery LTE takes.
I can't see Sprint releasing a phone with a 4g radio that cannot be used on its network now - just does not look good from the marketing standpoint. Therefore, I think Nexus Prime Sprint will have a WiMax radio.

You think its a better marketing standpoint to release a phone with "4g" technology that they're moving away from?

Wouldn't be the first time Sprint releases a phone with features that are planned for future deployment. The EVO 3D comes with their CDMA push to talk technology that's replacing iden. Wouldn't be surprising at all if the Galaxy Nexus included an LTE radio on Sprint's band. I'd really love Sprint's version to be a world phone. Hopefully they can include GSM and HSPA+.

It's highly possible that the Sprint Galaxy Nexus will include EVDO rev B with 1X Advanced. That means it's 3G speeds could reach 10 Mbps with voice and data simultaneously. That wouldn't be so bad.
