Soooo.. WebOS is dead. What now? - WebOS Software Development

HP said it's going to try to find something to put WebOS on now that it's halting all device development (death of TouchPad, Veer, Pre3, et al). Did anyone see this coming? /sarcasm

This thread is as dead as WebOs LOL!

I just took a look at a german distribution shopping system, there are thousands of devices at the storage sites ... I think we will see them in a soon future on ebay wow on a bargain

yes a bargain! $149 32gb, $99 16gb

I just picked one up for $90 shipped...I'll take that all day long.

The rumor is that HP has a licensing deal already in place and the quarter million TouchPads sitting at Best Buy are going to be picked up by all the "geeks" (me) for $99 looking here for a way to wedge android on it...at least it's a flash player.
Personally, I'd love for Samsung to buy WebOS and start putting out awesome hardware to go with it.
But I love conspiracies.
Vote Ron Paul. lol

Picked one up. I hope that they give the ability to load an alternative OS, but it is doubtful.
I wonder if we can use the base code from the new Evo3D and Sensation on there because of the similar parts.

Hello, I couldn't find any ... where did you find that price that still in stock ..?

so what is going on in terms of development? is there any real hope for having custom firmware and running AOSP android on this or is that a pipedream without source code? Does source code even matter anymore if you completely replace the OS?

I have to say for the price, I am very much happy with my HP touchpad, just got a 32gb one for 150 at staples. I hope something does come of web os with some developers or maybe android someday but I am happy as it is for the price.

Well, opensource.palm.com has parts of the OS. Maybe someone can use that as a start?

WebOS + MeeGo = awesome os!
But seriously they're very close/related systems that it wouldn't take as much work as some would think.
Then they could probably name it Maemo
Which would allow Google to rename "ChromeOS" to "WebOS" like it implies.

I agree! I got this today thinking "with a community this motivated, surely they'll have android on it soon enough!". Now that i've used it, I like it a lot. The core apps are great! I love the e-mail and calendar apps and bing maps works very well for me. I have a samsung captivate so android is something I know fairly well but I don't feel like i'm missing too much with this tablet as it is. I think this is a diamond in the rough OS and if they open source it, it will really take off.

This is true. I talked with my HP rep and htc/samsung/ect went to them Doyle web OS. In order for this HP had to get the HP logo off its tablets.

Make your own Android Phone

I dont know if its joke or not but there is first customizable phone i ever saw
http://synapse-phones.com/order.php
you can choose RAM Camera and all other stuff
If I was loaded with cash I would pimp this thing out big time!
Yeah i tried how much would be my own custom and 538 pounds
Pounds or Euro?
Either way it would be nice to get, cost about $850AUD.
Would be perfect if we can choose the screen type too!
maybe euro i only saw the cost
I will buy if it has the option of terga 2
really cool, mine is 518 which is reasonable
498 Euros for the one I want. That's sounds great until I convert it to USD. Then it makes me cry.
I wonder how it works when a new version of android comes out? Do you get upgrades?

I think I saw somewhere that the device is fully rooted when it ships. I Googled it for more info earlier today and think I saw it in one of the writeups I found about it. Links are listed at bottom of this post for more information on this device.
With all of the available options that I wanted it was gonna cost me roughly 500 US dollars.
BTW .... they are based in Germany, so I look for this to be an excellent device when they start production. They are taking pre-orders now to get a feel for the market I would assume.

yes indeed, a little to good to be true, i wonder why htc didnt think of something like this, to be able to make a custom phone to ur liking is serious business, all u need is to design a kernel that support all the hardware ur planing to sale. GOLD MINE!!
I'll sure as hell buy one! Looks like an amazing deal... 1 Gb RAM, 16 Gb internal, Wifi, 4G for future support, etc. Gotta love it!

HTC would never consider selling custom devices per order. Just think of the money they would lose if they quit selling to the masses, and by masses I am speaking of AT&T, T-Mo, Verizon, Sprint, etc. They are in the market for the BIG picture and that is all about quarterly earnings and stock prices, not making a BIG buck on custom devices that are tailor made for individuals like you and I.
I think that this new company could do very well building these custom devices. Once word gets out, all of the uppity ups will want one and it will carry them a long way in their success if that happens. You know how those uppity ups are, they aren't gonna drive a Toyota if they can get their hands on a Ferrari. It's a status thing and they will be a big part of the market for these devices IMO.
I hope they do well in their endeavor. All they have to do is make a name for themselves with a reliable and well built device. This one could truly be an iPhone killer if they play their cards right. It's already got any and every feature available that I can see, except for a kickstand. LOL
HTR
I really like the fact that you can have up to 32gb internal storage and then 32gb microSD ... 64gb total! This could completely replace my mp3 player with all that storage.

It is obviously a fake website. They cant even spell technology.
Htc would never do this because having a phone not rooted when it hits the user is a good thing for them since it allows them to control what is on the phone and what is not. Thus allowing them to add more features on the next phone update to draw in more people for the same exact phone...
They spell it technologie because its a German company. Looking at thier site, actually they look to be legit.
Eventually HTC, Samsung, and the other big manufacturers will have to do something like this. If they dont, companies like this one will keep springing up and taking larger and larger share of the market.
Think about it, if you had to spend $350 for 'almost' the phone you want, or could spend $500 for exactly the phone you want, you'd spend the extra $ because for most, a smartphone is a long term investment.
Even if this were a fake site, theres more to come because theres a market for it.
Even if youre not actually getting a better phone, theres plenty of materialistic douchebags thatll buy one just for the prestige of having a unique phone, to fuel a market for this

I don't hate android (obviously, see sig) but webOS/Enyo are positively utopian vs developing for android. There's actually lots of tablet-specific webOS apps, I believe at launch 49 days ago they had more apps than Honeycomb (granted very little big name titles).
Instead of putting Android on a touchpad, I'd much rather put webOS (3.x would be fantastic, but no phone was ever released with it) on say an HTC Sensation. That would be killer. Too bad if they even are able to court HTC enough to make devices running wbeOS it'll be a year or so until we actually see the fruits of it.
The Touchpad's hardware is awesome. Is there a developer willing to hack android 3.x on the device? I would definitely donate to the project and I'm pretty sure a lot of folks in the PreCentral Forums would do the same. Any takers?
Honeycomb on the HP TouchPad
That's a great idea. I'm sure Best Buy would be interested too -- then they could sell some of their 270,000 TouchPads as Android devices. Would love to see if Android Honeycomb can work on the TouchPad & if anyone can show how to do this.
I'd help pay the person who ported Android over to this.
Count me in as well for donating to the project. I love WebOS but I'd take Android in a second if I could.

That's a start but drivers for Android would have to be found for every other part in the HP Touchpad like the WiFi, Bluetooth, display, sd card reader, etc...
Great question - so it sounds like it's possible, ie, there's no hardware limitation? It would just be a ton of work?
It's true - they're selling them for 300 bucks off.
HP is going to also try to sell it's PC biz and focus on software...er... their specialty...? Makes you wonder why they bought Palm to begin with if they were just going to destroy the chances for WebOS? And destroy their company while they're at it.
Very interested to know if this is possible, I'd totally pick up the TouchPad on clearance tomorrow if you can install Android onto it so it can stay up to date.
I'd definitely donate $20 to see Android ported to this, just bought one for $99 today

HP's biggest mistake was putting WebOS on it. I guess they learned nothing from the failed attempt called the Palm Pre.
Hey speaking of which, the Touchpad sounds like it will be pulled from the market completely. I suppose they were embarrassed when WebOS ran faster on the iPad when they gave it a test run. They are said to be working on another tablet, a 7 inch tablet I believe. Since it most likely will not be running WebOS, and since the only open source OS is Android... I think I know what will happen next! Hmmm...
I would personally never touch any tablet that isn't running the Android OS. Not the Playbook, the Touchpad, and definitely not the iPad!

+1 We think alike.
Android on Touchpad
Those tablets have an open bootloader, they can run android. It might be time to start a forum for doing just that?
The official line is that only the hardware side is dead, and the platform will continue for development & licensing. But no doubt an outright sale is preferred, given the strategic direction change with the $10B+ planned acquisition of Autonomy. Either way, WebOS will be mothballed for the foreseeable future, with no dev support.
The common line among pundits is that HP muffed the tablet & phone launches, with mediocre hardware and half-baked software, and decided to cut its losses. IMO, WebOS never had much of a chance, even if the launches went off well. On one side, there is the iPad with its polished UI and many apps. On the other, you have a legion of low-cost Android tabs. There is no breathing room.
HP's announced strategy for WebOS adoption was to piggyback on Windows as a shell in HP PCs & printers, where its vast market share is a strength. But WebOS' chance went from slim to none the moment MS announced that Win8 would encompass tablets, has a touch-friendly GUI, and run on ARM. The rationale to include it as a Windows touch-GUI was no longer viable. Thus the sole chance of WebOS penetration rests on the tablet doing well, which it didn't. But the tablet was never the main plan for WebOS, the PC was.
The bigger impact by far to HP's stock walloping is the announcement of exiting the PC market. Not sure what the thinking is here, to announce it way before it had a deal lined up. HP PC sales will suffer, especially going into the all-important back-to-school and holiday shopping periods. Apotheker has a lot to answer for.
The other shoe left to drop is when RIM would cry uncle with the Playbook.
HP should license the OS or certain features in it if they arent going to make it Open Source. The OS is awesome but they didn't put any money into hardware. Can you imagine a 4 in+ HTC device running WebOS? That would be awesome. The software is awesome but the hardware, marketing and acquisitions direction was horrible.
The purchased may have been for the patents since it was a steal. If we are lucky Google makes an offer they can't refuse on those patents.

In the thread, people are buying them by the dozens, no doubt to fleabay them afterward. If you want one, be fast.
Does anyone know if Netflix is on this (homebrew/exploit/etc.) this would a partial dealbreaker (although I already bought it)?
I ended up ordering two 32gb TouchPads, the total cost came to $269, I could not go wrong for $134.50 for a device priced at $599 not even a year ago? It looks like they are all gone on HP's site now though.
the specs of the touchpad are not that impressive plus it boots very slow.. and its webOS not Android..and its the heaviest slate around !!
you can get an Android based tablet with the same specs for a better price.. unless someone ports Android to touchpad and HP will sell it for $150 or lower then it would worth spending the money on it.

Unfortunately no, they're shutting everything but Copiers/Printers. WebOS is done for. Why HP would destroy Palm's legacy I'll never know.
Sent from Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?
The previous CEO of Palm, Mark Hurd is the guy who bought Palm. He saw the purchase as a way for HP to become like Apple; a company that can marry Software and Hardware beautifully and sell products at high profit. It is very hard to do and you need to put a lot of resources and money in both hardware and software. Unfortunately he was kicked out of HP due to his Mistress expense report scandal.
The current CEO of Palm, Leo Apotheker doesn't share that same vision for Palm. He saw HP more as IBM; a company that can provide software solutions only. I think Apotheker tried out Hurd's way but he had a real short leash and didn't put much resource and money into it.
HP is apparently going into the "Cloud" biz, they are making a run at buying Autonomy, a vendor that provides document viewing capabilities (amongst other things) for $10 M.
I think this is a huge mistake as they could have been poised to eventually take advantage of all the RIM screwups.
As one who eventually crossed over to the "dark side" of Android from 10+ years of Palm and a 2 Pre family, this is really dissapointing. Over time (about 36 hours to be exact) I learned to really appreciate the Android OS and leave that beautiful, silky smooth, digital honey of an OS (WebOS) behind. As a past WebOS dev, I recently received a nice temptation in $100 off the new WebOS tablet. Dont think I am going to purchase one now.
WebOS to this day is still the only true multi-tasking mobile OS and I hope Google has the "smarts" to gobble it up before Apple jumps on it.
RIP WebOS
WebOS should have been huge. Shame how it was mismanaged. I'm glad to be on Android but competition really is good for everyone.
This is very interesting. Seeing that my entire company is primarily a HP shop!
HP would be smart to license out WebOS to tablet and phone manufacturers. The problem with Palm was the crappy hardware. I would think Samsung's, HTC's, etc high end hardware running WebOS could be an instant hit.
I understand why they are stopping tablets and phones they didn't stand a chance. They would have been better off using either windows or android instead of thinking their os was gonna be some big welcoming although some of you seemed to have liked it I didn't really care for it. But stopping or selling their pc business that's a dumb move on their part I think and there stock is suffering already from it pretty bad.

It wasn't just hardware issues. Their ad campaign was awful, they shouldn't have made the Pre exclusive to Sprint (much as I love them), and they had a months-long delay between announcement and launch. If they would have done just those things better, WebOS and Palm would probably be thriving today. No one wants WebOS anymore for phones, it's going to be Android dominance of everything except Apple's loyal niche. If MS didn't have so much cash to burn Windows Phone 7 would already be in a hospice. I wonder if they will eventually give up on it.
There's probably going to be a IP auction over webos patents and palm remains now. And microsoft, apple and google could all use the bits and pieces even to just screw with the competition...
As for the pcs, u will get support. Besides, it will be a phase out and they'll likely just spin off compaq as the hardware devision. Or sell it like ibm. But pcs r dying. They will go the way of the cd soon... lol

Lack of development

I'm disappointed that there isn't much development going on for the Thrive. I'm also curious as to why? I bought one after doing major comparison between all the tablets available and I chose this one because of the specs, size and of course, capabilities. My friends have other tablets, such as the Acer 500 and I rooted it last night for him and it's nowhere near the speed of my Thrive.
I guess I'll just have to wait it out but damn, I want a new ROM on this already. Just having it rooted isn't enough to take advantage of even a fraction of the capabilities this thing has.

I was in the same boat so to say my first choice was the thrive I happily bought it after much consideration of other tablets on the market at the time .. once I got home I enjoyed the speed and the thrives native apps but I went to XDA to se what was popping and nothing lol a dead tablet on the development front.so I tried the Asus liked the screen but didn't want to pat $160 u.s. for USB and extra battery life so i bought my Iconia and ill tell ya what I freaking love it besides some problems with Gameloft apps but usb HDMI micro SD I'm happy and amazing veiwing angles!

Well I have the thrive and it is rooted and has a OC Kernel and Dalepl's stock rom, am I sorry that it does not have some great rom on it, NO it is quite functional and is twice the tablet of any Acer Iconia, and just to be clear I HAVE HAD a Acer Iconia, Motorola Xoom and the Almighty Samsung and all lasted less than a week before returning them, have had my thrive since release and could not be more pleased, and all of the substandard tabs are gone!!!!
I waited in line on black Friday for the Asus transformer because it has a large development scene, but they ran out and I ended up with the Toshiba for $30 more. I've got to day, for what I paid, the Toshiba is cool, but I wish I could get some cyanogen on here.

same here. Love the size and Honeycomb. Have a Samsung galaxy tab 7" and wanted something bigger and newer. Made the mistake of upgrading to 3.2.1 and was hoping the great minds of XDA have figured out how to downgrade to root. Kind of disappointed on the development but maybe we weren't the only ones who went to buy the Transformer and ended up with the thrive. Only time will tell.
Don't know why this thing isn't more popular. Just got mine the other day. So far I love the fact that I can plug in the dongle from my computers wireless keyboard and an hdmi cable to my big screen tv, pair it to a wii remote and have at it. Absolutely awesome!

There is a lot more for it but not on this Forum, I would just say Google the thrive and the other forum will come up in search results and yes there is plenty of Development going on. I cannot put the forum's name here because they will just delete the name if not my complete post.
Yeah, I'm a recovering rom-flasher myself, and I was initially kind of bummed out at the fact that there are not dozens of choices for ROMs, but then I got to asking myself "Why?"
I have Cyanogen 7 on my HTC LEO, and I can flash a new version every week if I want, or if I get tired of that, there are many other ROMS I can choose from. But for the Tablet, I'm looking for a stable portable platform to read forums, e-books, maybe play a few games. The Thrive fills that bill, and the hardware is more versatile than most other tablets out there. I rooted the stock 3.1 ROM so I could use Titanium Backup and nmap, and I don't think I'll upgrade until Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, if then. 3.2 seems to be mostly for 7" tablets so it doesn't interest me much.
I see that there are other ROMS on those "unmetnionable" forums, but I've learned over the years to trust the developers and forums at XDA so I don't really want to take a chance elsewhere.
That's my two cents' worth and if you don't agree, I applaud you - enjoy flashing whatever you can find - it's a lot of fun, and I will continue to do so on my HTC phone, but not on my tablet. Just my opinion.

I wish you had one

I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of developers having the device. I think if I had one I would probably be putting something together - but I have the Transformer - and no time at the present.

I wish you had one jerdog. If I could I'd buy you one myself. I just picked one up online for $307 shipped out the door. It's a 16gb model.

I think it will be picking up speed soon. Compared to other tablets on the market right now, spec wise, the Thrive is pure ownage! I still have mine and use it frequently. I'm cool with just having it rooted for now so we'll see what happens in the future for development.

I dropped mine last night and cracked the screen on the bottom. It still works perfect and the crack doesn't even get in the way when using it. Wanna' buy it cheap?

Well then you will lose out because the Thrive on XDA will soon be dead and those of us on the other forum will have everything we want on our tablets and thank god that crap cyanogen is not on the thrive!!!!
Performance! But....
I have purchased two of these devices.... One 16G and one 8G. Both ate verymooth and perform very nicely.
Even though Im enjoying the units, I still believe that there should become level of focus on these units. Toshiba now has these units up to V3.3 and have things locked down tightly. Though I believe they did a nice job on the stock ROM, I still believe there should be a root option to admonisyer my personal device. I also believe that the collective brain trust of XDA could produce a ROM that shows the true capability of this hardware platform.
One of the coolest features of the 10.1 inch units is that it has a user replacable battery! How cool is that??
Im not a programmer and barely qualify as a script kiddie in this day of age. So like others on this forum, I have to wait for those with the knowledge and motivation to provide the future path and direction.

Anyway, glad another developer is on line. I think this is the best overall tablet around. So lets make sure it is. I hope you will be doing custom work, we need someone to do that for individuals that like custom ROMs. Take care.

I agree! This tablet rocks. I've have had the Kindle Fire, Acer A100, Nook Tablet, and now this and I love it. I will be doing some custom work.
Great! Custom work is what we need to round off this thing. Do you do kernel work by chance?
I have the Thrive 10.1" and Thrive 7" and if you have looked at my work, I mainly keep it stock. That is what I like and I have a lot of people who like that. If you need base ROMs, feel free to download and use mine.
By the way, sorry if you thought you affended me. Was not wanting you to think that. Just wanted you to know why I do what I do and where. Cheers
