EVO does not charge, completely revert back? - EVO 4G General

Hey guys so my EVO has been my daily driver since the day it came out, haven't had any problems and been loving it since.
Recently i purchased an extended battery to hopefully increase the amount of time i have to leave the phone charging. When i switched to the new battery i didn't notice much difference, even conditioned the battery perfectly as well.
So my next step i installed a SBC kernel to see if that may help, well the only thing i can think is that i got lazy and somehow left my phone on with the SBC kernel and now it has messed up the phone.
PROBLEM:
Phone will not accept charge via USB, OEM or Aftermarket charger. The only way for me to use my phone is to charge a battery with an external charger and then just keep switching them out.
So i believe this may be caused by using the SBC kernel but can't be sure (the phone is a bit old and beat up), but i want to revert everything back to stock so i can take it to the Sprint store and see if they will just swap me with another EVO so i don't have any phone downtime. I know worst case scenario i can order another one through insurance but i don't want to spend the $100 deductible if i don't have to.
What is the best way to revert completely back to stock and hopefully make it so at the Sprint store they can't tell that i used a custom rom and kernel?
I created a NAND backup of my current install and was just going to remove the sd card when i go to the Sprint store so i can at least have a backup.
I found these stock roms:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-htc-evo-4g-development/121961-sprint-htc-evo-4g-shipped-roms.html
But can't seem to find any stock kernels except this thread on XDA:
Stock Kernel - xda-developers
Anybody know where i can download the stock kernel?
I also found this thread on XDA with document from a Sprint forum saying that they will accept rooted phones?:
xda-developers - View Single Post - Sprint returns
So my question really comes down to, should i just worry about flashing the stock kernel and rom and then just bring it to a Sprint store?
Anybody got any feedback that has done this before or can point me in the right direction? I want to try and stop by the store today to see what we can get done, have a big week of work ahead of me and don't need any phone downtime.
I also found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812030
But is that still viable if they are accepting rooted phones and since it is a bit dated? Should i just print out that thread from a forum to bring to sprint store in case they give me problems?
Thanks guys!

I would revert to stock just in case, especially if they can link the kernel to your issue.
Question, you said it won't accept a charge, is that just for the aftermarket battery or the stock too?
Does the USB port function at all?
Because it sounds like it could just be a USB failure.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MUSAURP7
Take that file and rename it PC36IMG.zip and boot into your bootloader and approve the update.
That will return it to complete stock. [Kernel, radio, ROM etc]
If you used unrevoked you need to flash this .zip first.
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip

Thanks for the quick reply, it looks like it's USB all together, it will work for a minute or two then cut off, same thing with charging. Normally i just take my micro SD card and put it in a converter that hooks up to my laptop, now that i tried with USB i notice that doesn't work either.
Are there any fixes/troubleshooting guides for USB failure or is that something hardware related?

There was a thread in the development section some time ago but I think this is just a straight hardware issue.
Unroot just to protect yourself and take it in.
Be warned you will likely get a replacement with 2.3.3 (not rootable currently) if they can't repair the USB port.

Ok but it goes straight to bootloader screen now and nothing else?
I tried flashing another ROM and that did not work, guessing because im no longer rooted, but all i can find for shipped roms are the RUU.
Do you know where i can get a stock rom to flash via recovery? I just dont want to take the phone into the store and them put another battery in it to see that it goes straight to the bootloader screen
Any ideas?

Oh you flashed the s-on .zip, sorry there's so much goddamn trolling around here that you can't help but get caught up in it.
Here's a list of the RUUs.

The .zip are the one that you change to PC36IMG.zip
If you do one of the two top ones you will not be able to re-root the phone later.
[Might not matter if they are replacing it anyway]

Ok great, let me give it a try, thanks for all your help and quick replies!

Okay she's at the store now sitting in that long ass line of phones that need repaired...sometimes it's hard to explain to the sprint people you know what the problem probably is without giving away too much information.
Either way i took the forum printout with me just in case...
BUT they told me they only have (1) evo in stock (obviously besides the ones for sale) and there are 3 other evo's in front of me needing repair (software hopefully).
So as i sat there for a good 30 minutes waiting to give my phone to someone i looked through all the phones they have out now.
Been with Sprint for over 5 years now and the only real upgrade they gave me was the EVO from the TP2 because of how much i complained and complained and complained until they finally gave me one.
I don't have any problems with my EVO, but i use my phone for work and not having it for a day almost makes me feel paralyzed (should not have given old phones to friends, ugh).
What do you think the chances are of them just giving me another phone they have in stock? I'm not too concerned with what it is right now as i just need something to hold me over until i buy another one, but i've had my fun with my EVO and they have plenty of other phones that cost just about the same thing.
I know this question is hard to answer, but if they tell me they have to order the EVO you think if i complain enough they will just give me another phone instead? Maybe i can call Sprint before i head back to the store and see if they can work something out for me?
I'm not saying i want them to give me the phone that cost $200 after rebate as the EVO is now only 99, but if i pay the difference would they? Anybody had this work before?
Hopefully they can just repair my EVO or give me another one, i'm just trying to figure out the best way to do this without having to buy the damn phone at retail cost then return it when my EVO gets in, cut up all my credit cards years ago and thinking about it now just makes me want to cry since i really need one now...ugh..hellp!
Does anybody also know if their business plans have any type of SLA for phones? I would pay $15 a month instead of $8 just to know i can walk into a store and they would give me another of the same or something comparable just so i dont have to go without a phone??
Thanks, i'll let you know how it goes today!

The phone shows signs of corrosion, so they say i have to file an insurance claim. I told them to open it for me and show me where and the dude showed me this small spot on the other side of the board the camera is on that has like an outline of where there may have been some type of liquid?
Who knows, the phone hasn't been dropped in anything, hasn't been used the rain, but they said they are not willing to fix it because they found that spot. BS, that's not what caused my USB port not to work but obviously they don't care...grrrrrr!

Honestly, in a case like this, IF the phone truly has never been dropped in liquid I would call Sprint retentions and complain.
But please only do so IF it truly hasn't.

It really was never exposed to any type of water, only thing i can possibly think was maybe when it rained by i have the otterbox on it so i dont even see how that could be possible.
I did call them and complained a whole lot. They basically gave me a credit for next month and i just paid the deductible for insurance.
Anyways thanks a ton for your help man!

Do you know of a way to root the phone without having USB? Since i'm going to keep this phone i want to try and fix it myself now but USB doesn't work in order to root it again haha
So now that i'm going to keep the phone i guess i need to bring it back to a rootable state...and since i flashed the newest ROM im guessing i can't do that yet, eh?

No, android 2.3.3 is not rootable for the Evo yet

Only a few days later and here's a wonderful thread that worked perfectly for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
Rooting was even easier than before!
Now i can finally use Synergy which is very exciting...i'm also going to try that usb trick and see if i can fix my original EVO, maybe use it for dev or something.

Im sorry but honestly.. they cant trade out my battery! Wanna know why?! THEY ARE MORE WORRIED ABOUT COMPLETING ORDERS WITH NEW CUSTOMERS. Hmph knowing google i wasnt surprised but STILL! REALLY?! So basically I have to shell out 50 bucks for a new battery? Maybe someone knows something.. I didnt post in accessories because it isnt so I dont know... if this is wrong place sorry.

Did you install the RAM hacked kernel? That has a known issue of causing batteries to no longer charge, and you must revert back to the stock kernel or the recently released patch RAM hacked kenel.

The stock ROMs don't fix it, IIRC, you need to flash the stock kernel.

Not really sure, I just started reading up on the Cyan and Kernel for the Nexus One a couple days ago. Perhaps someone that has messed around with the stuff and has a link handy to the kernel he needs could post it up?
As well, I would be willing to bet if you did a search of the Cyan 5.0 ROM thread for "kernel" you would find a link at some place in there.
OP, you need to chill.
Just reflash Cyanogen's addon pack.
I found the Zimage or what ever to flash.. but my battery is dead! GAH! now i have to order one because i dont have a batt to flash it with
That new battery may or may not come charged, if that's what you mean. You might need a friend with an N1 to help you out, if you need a charged battery to reflash.
FYI, worst case scenario, you could always mail your battery to somebody, let them charge it, then mail it back... I would recommend trying to find someone in Cali first, since it would take about 4 days round trip then. I would be willing to help you out, though, if you can't find anyone else... but I am in Iowa, so it would take more like a week or so round trip.
how about turning it on with the charger in w/o the battery? My g1 can do it. Not sure if that applies to other phones.
I find it funny how in your first post you call htc and google stupid for not fixing your battery issue which you obviously brought upon yourself by installing custom roms.

no wonder HTC doesn't want to know about unlocked nexus going in for warranty.
if you install a custom rom the least you can do is try to stay on top of things related to that rom. I haven't unlocked, but even I knew there was an issue with batteries not charging.

Perhaps now you can understand why some of us are irritated when people jump the gun on things. In this case, we're talking about people going straight to rooting and flashing their phones with custom ROMs without realizing the potential issues related with them... in other cases, well I won't get into off topic discussion...but suffice to say that this isn't the last time you see someone flash a ROM, then ask why his phone isn't working the same as it was before.
HTC picked up my N1 yesterday because it wasnt charging. It said it was charging but as soon as I took out the charger it turned off.
It had an unlocked bootloader and they said they would send me a new one...
Fingers crossed I get a new one soon
I didn't know about the kernel doing this so just I emailed them, then phoned and they sent someone to pick mine up...
Man that's bad.You really should not root your next one, and if you do, you should take responsibility for your actions.

You talking to me?
HTC gave me a new Nexus One today and mine was unlocked and replaced no problem And it wasn't to do with the kernel because the report from HTC says the battery was faulty But they gave me a new device anyway.
I love it how people just love to automatically point the figure at somebody else for their fault. Maybe you should have first read more about something when you decide to root your phone rather than running and screaming like a two year old.
There are many reasons to root/rom/kernel the phone when you may not be considered one of the 'enlightenned' as this thread seems to insinuate.
If you need to do anything that is not in the android ideal as far as application framework goes your screwed.
I bought this phone since I was "sold" that it was "open"
and for "development" that to me impiled it at least had a shell...
This thread has gotten seriously off track.
Please respond in the vein of helping identify what the stable(est)rooted baseline should be.

Sprint Service Repair Centers

I need to take my phone in to a repair center. Should I reroot and go in stock? I know i already should pull my SD card, anything else? How much do they charge, i dont have insurance. Do they give you a replacement phone?
Just nervous, need some advice.
First off whats wrong with your device, and if you haven't had your hero over a year then your still in warranty and shouldn't charge you anything (and thats impossible cause the hero hasn't been out a year).
I would go back to stock rom, most service center repair specialists will flip out if you tell them hacked your phone. Just saying (I don't care personally)
Yes, before you go to the sprint store restore to factory OS. If you don't that will void your warranty

Most stores can't repair something like this. They will probably give you whats called an Advanced Exchange, meaning they'll order you a refurbished Hero, before you freak, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a refurbished phone.
Secondly they will probably not give you a loaner while they look at/repair it. It would take probably 8 minutes to activate a loaner and then look at your phone, its way more simply to just go without a phone for an hour or less.
Lastly, they will more then likely not be able to swap you same day, meaning the refurbished phone will need to be sent to the store, and you would pick it up tomorrow.
Hope this explains Sprint's process a little better.

Dust and moisture residue gradually build up on the metal contacts and cause some interference..
Usually that issue is not the port, but thats not a be all-end all answer either.

Ok, wanted to share my experience...
The store i purchased my phone at initially is great, they have helped me with everything and have always been polite and courteous. After going to that store they told me to simply take it to their readynow store and they will fix it no problem. That combined with the recommendations from techs in this forum i felt very good driving 20 miles with my screaming child to the store to get it resolved.
Im back after a very angry drive home. Not only did the manager at the store let me stand waiting to be helped facing her for 10 minutes before i asked to be helped, she acted as if i were a retarted person and pointed out the audio jack on top and showed me how to put the headphone jack in.
When I explained that for the sake of better sound quality and accessories I have always used the bottom port for audio and it obviously is malfunctioning (it goes on and off when something is plugged in to audio in th mini usb)
She let out a sigh and said she would see if the tech will "even look at it". When she came back she told me that the tech says that the mini usb isn't intended for audio use and he wouldn't accept it.
I explained that my local store told me this would be taken care of here no problem and it was covered under warranty, and i spoke with a few techs online who recommended the same, and now your saying im SOL? she says yes.
I have heard horror storys about bad sprint service but I have never been treated by a company that i support with my money monthly this way. THE WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD! I would be fired if i talked to a customer like that and just shrugged off their problem.
Sorry for the rant

Just FYI, and I'm not saying you'd want to take it to court, but courts have upheld that defects in products that could not be caused by software/firmware changes must be covered under warranty even if the user changed it to some unauthorized version. The case I'm thinking about was regarding a hacked game console but the same would theoretically apply to a phone. This would have to be something like the screen dying or the usb port going bad. If the processor died they could possibly argue that you caused it with under/over clocking attempts.

For those that are on the beta Bonsai 4.1.0b9 the 2 quickest ways to get back to 4.0.1 is to flash 4.0.1 then run one click root Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.6 since it does not play nice with the imbedded 3.0.2.4 from 4.1.0 or you can Odin EB13 prerooted with CWM 3.0.0.6 then after converting to EXT 4 restore a nandroid of 4.0.1. Reflash 4.0.1 after that to disable journaling. Then Odin the EC05 modem.
EB13 link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
One click root CWM 3.0.0.6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
If anyone needs Odin let me know.
charge the battery for an hour or so. then try to get into download mode again. if you can, stop and charge the battery to full. if you can't, it may actually be bricked. download mode uses alot of juice, and you can think you're bricked when you really just have a dead battery.

One of the guys with the bricked phones had extra batteries charged, and no go. Another just came back from the Sprint store and they ordered him another phone after trying to revive it for 2 hours. Whatever this is, it is really bricking the phones. It could be CWM 3.0.2.4 related since that was imbedded in the ROM.

Whatever this is, it is really bricking the phones. It could be CWM 3.0.2.4 related since that was imbedded in the ROM.

There is modified charging code in the kernel. That could be the culprit.

I didn't take it seriously until the 4th bricked phone. I even tried to convince myself that I would be safe with the Genocide kernel on it. But then common sense took over and I went back to 4.0.1 and passed the word here.
After taking my brick in and they worked with it for a couple of hours they said they would replace it no questions asked. When I first went in I told them I took it off the charger and it wouldn't turn on. Nothing they could do would get it running.
None in stock so I wait until tomorrow or the next day.

And of course no loner phone.
Could someone explain to me why Sprint should be eating the cost of replacing these phones?

They are not. The insurance is.

And they don't eat the phones. They get refurbed and given to the next insurance claim.
They shouldn't be, but things like this is exactly the ammunition they need to lock down the bootloader, up insurance cost, etc. . .
I am not sure why anyone would think it would be okay to rob a bank and then tell everyone about it, but people seem to think posting in a public forum is some how annomymous.
No I am not saying anyone is going to get in trouble, but a simple google search pulls this stuff up.

Really? You are on the side of the insurance company? The same one that gets $7 a month from most people and then instead of giving people a new phone immediately makes them wait for a refurbed one, a couple of days. The same insurance that makes you wait a couple of days to get your keyboard fixed instead of giving you another phone. Believe me they are not losing any money. Don't cry for them.

Indeed, they are not losing anything. In fact, the insurance industry is the only field that hires more mathematicians than NASA. They make sure that no matter what, prices and deductibles are set so they profit. It's one of the longest going scams in history. I have TEP on 5 lines. So I don't feel bad when someone gets their money's worth.

Banks are insured too. So should we say the same thing when they're robbed? Hell, let's not even go after the people who robbed it because they're insured right?
Somebody has to eat the cost any time a claim is made. And unfortunately, it's the consumer. TEP used to be $5 a month. Nobody is forced to have insurance on their phone. And nobody is forced to load custom ROMs either. Don't try to justify the risk you took by thinking you're entitled to a claim any time you want it.
Auto insurance companies deny claims all the time because of negligence. Why should we all pay when someone is doing 150mph down the freeway? It's the same concept here.
Ok bonsai fans, please stop talking about getting phones replaced. We are starting to attract all the party poopers and well they are going to poop on your party(in a ****ty arnold voice)

Phone won't charge

So, somehow my Epic. Got wet and I have no clue. I woke up in the morning and it was fully charged but I noticed it was wet.. not wet enough to have the screen fogged up or anything but when i took the back cover off it was a little bit wet. Then I realized that when I plug it up to charge it, it doesn't charge and when I plug it into my computer it can't be recognized either. I've already tried all the tricks and let it dry it for a day... everything works perfect except it won't charge (and I've tried multiple cables) but, what I really wanna know is if there is a way to go back to a stock rom without a cable or even if there is just a way to completely wipe it even if it doesn't work so I can take it in and get it replaced w/o voiding warranty. I have 66% battery life right now so, I'm keeping it turned off to hope there is a way. Thanks.
Can you stock it: yes. Are you ****ed? Yes. You're not getting a warranty repair on that. Water damage means you better have insurance. Trust me.
I do have insurance... so, I just need to know how to get it back to stock and take it in... or else I'll just call it up lost. Do you have to pay the $100 regardless if its water damage?
Yes, if it's water damaged, you're paying $100. Don't bother stocking it, Asurion doesn't care.
So, should I just call up Asurion and tell them its water damaged.. or just tell them its lost?

No. It's water damaged, tell them so. Once you fax in your affidavit, you'll get a return call within about a day asking for payment on the $100; do so, and it will be priority overnighted to you that day (very nice). Then when you get the new device, you'll use the prepaid mailer to send the damaged device back to them within 10 days.
Well, I just noticed its actually charging ... just doesn't say its charging and the computer doesnt recognize it..

I experienced something similar with mine. You can try a different cable, but if USB is hosed after water damage, your device is toast. I would know.
Yea, I guess I'll give it another day and see how it does if not I'll get a new one.. thanks for the advice though.
Well, my phone has been charging perfectly now that I replaced the cable (it even says its charging now) and I'm not having any problems with it at all except that it's not allowing it to work with my computer, so no odin. Can anyone guide me in the right direction on how to go back to completely stock via SD card. I haven't been able to find anything on it. Would like to go back stock and take it in to sprint. See if I can get a new one. If not I'm currently running AA's i3 and it runs great so, I'll just stick with that if nothing else. Thanks in advance.
Perhaps a search for an update.zip?

Here's a link to a thread that has the DK28 leak..... read the intire OP so you don't mess up..... once you flash the update.zip you can then OTA to stock EC05......

This method is intended for upgrading from 2.1 is it safe for me coming from 2.3 to do this? Don't want to risk being phoneless if this doesn't work.

It might work...... I've never had to use it coming from gb..... the only time i used it was when it first came out so i could get froyo....but I would make a nand backup before flashing like always just to be safe

I think my focus may be completely bricked, no logo, no vibration, no pc detection.

To start I am new to the Samsung Focus and the Windows Phone 7 modding scene. The only background I have is with Android and the Samsung Fascinate.
I have been battling with this focus for a few days.
When I first got it it would not start up at all, only bootloop at the Samsung logo.
I then figured out that the phone would boot up if I removed the SD card. I know for a fact that was the SD card that came with and has been in the phone until now.
The phone when connected to pc or the wall would seem to not charge batteries. I have 3 working 1500 mAh batteries between my fascinate and this focus and the focus would not charge any of them.
Then I flashed MAGLDR, or at least tried to. It failed the first time during installation, and worked the second time.
I then attempted to flash cleanrom 3.10a. The installation program said it had completed sucessfully, but alas I only got a bootloop.
Then I flashed 1.3 stock rom sucessfully, but still a bootloop.
I just tried to flash the 1.4 stock rom to maybe kick it out of bootloop, and during the PDA flashing the phone got stuck at 13%. Unlucky number, eh?
After 15 or so minutes I decided to unplug the phone and pull the battery.
Uh-oh.
Now, with 2 different batteries, which I know are charged, the phone will not boot into the logo, download mode, or format mode. Pressing the power button does nothing. The screen remains black, and plugging the phone in after holding the download mode buttons does nothing, my pc does not recognize any usb device being plugged in.
Now I am completely stuck. Is it a paperweight or can I still save it?

Are you saying you have a Version 1.3 Focus and you flashed the Version 1.4 stock ROM? If you did, then yes, you now have a bricked Focus, and I don't believe anyone has found a way to repair that. NEVER flash ver 1.4 ROM to a ver 1.3 phone, or vice versa. Sorry about your troubles...

Yes I guess I did. There was no place that I could find that ever stated the difference between 1.3 and 1.4. I saw something online about being able to recover it with a JTAG service (sending it out to someone with a RIFF box and have them jtag it back to download mode) would that even be possible?

For starters, please don't take my previous message as scolding you for flashing the wrong ROM. Believe me, it happens to all of us at some point. I did it to an HD2 and bricked it.
I don't remember anyone recovering it with JTAG, but if there is a way, I'm sure that's it. I would suggest you follow up in the thread where you read that and see if anyone there can confirm they have done it successfully. Good luck, and again, I'm sorry about your phone.

I only found one website that seemed legitimate (he had youtube videos with 40,000 ish views) and honest. He explained that the JTAG method could fix dead-boot phones like mine, and if not then the price is refunded. It's only $40 for the service, but I'm a poor high school student. Once I get the money I will definitely follow up in this thread. :good:

Be cautious of those sites, and get references. There are many sites that "Say" they will do something and if it does not work, they will refund your money. But when you don't hear back, you've lost your money, and possibly phone. It's really hard to get a refund at that point.
There are MANY iPhone Unlock Sites that do nothing more than take your money, never to be heard from again. They look legitimate, but it's really hard to tell from a web site that can be built in an hour or so.

Duly noted. I will definitely do my research. Also I will probably go to a site that uses paypal so I can take advantage of their buyer protection policies.
I would consider getting a phone off of ebay with a cracked screen and strip out the main board, put it in your phone.
Make sure you flash with the correct firmware.
