[Q] Hardware reset after removing bloatware - Xperia Play General

I have a rooted xperia play, (no unlocked bootloader). I removed a lot of the default apps with Titanium Backup, basically almost everything from the sticky thread about bloatware. I backed up and uninstalled them instead of freezing.
Can I still do hardware reset or would I need to reinstall everything?
Same question for OTA updates

Okay I tried it myself and I could do hardware reset. BUT I lost partial function of my homekey (it worked for unlocking screen but it doesnt bring up home screen).
I installed 2.3.3 update through SEUS and it worked, but I lost my root acces. Fixed the home key though.
So I had to use Flashtool to go back to 2.3.2, root and ota to 2.3.3 without removing bloat.

Whenever you wanna do a reset or an update you need to restore the bloatware first. Otherwise what you described with the home screen will happen, and OTA won't work.
Now that you have 2.3.3 with root, backup the bloat with titanium first, then uninstall it. As long as you restore it before another reset or update it'll be fine.

[Q] For OTA Update - Unrooting Necessary?

I remember reading about having to unroot your phone from the Froyo update. I have the Z4root but it only has a root button.
1. Is it advisable to unroot for OTA update?
2. Any resources for Z4unroot?
Thank for helppin' a n00b out.
It is correct that you'll need to have your phone unrooted to receive the update. Are you rooted with z4 now? If so you should be able to click on z4 and have the "unroot" option appear. If it doesn't appear I have no idea where you should go. Did you do a nandroid backup as well? !
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Unrooting has never been necessary. You just need to be on the stock rom without any system apps removed.
How about frozen apps in Titanium Backup... need to unfreeze?
Dr, you're saying leaving phone rooted will not stop ota? I don't want update. Have frozen 2.2.1 updater in titanium and some other bloatware as well. I was informed doing all this would stop update.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Being rooted will change nothing about the update. I can't speak to how Titanium Backup freezes apps, but I know in the past if someone removed/renamed apps in the /system/apps folder the update failed.
You should google/search this site for answer on how to avoid downloading the update if that's what you want.
What needs to happen in order for you to receive the update is that you must be on stock blur rom that came with the phone as well as not have any programs that prevent it from updating IE bootstrapperx, titanium pro, romwork (or w/e its called) etc. A lot of programs used to do Rome like the ones mentioned above have built in code to tell the ota update to basically go **** itself

PM me i'll hook you up
I didn't have to unroot when I did the 2.2 OTA update. But just before I updated, I did unfreeze all the crapware I froze with Titanium Backup. Didn't have a single issue. Once I was on 2.2, I froze all the crapware again.
i have never un-rooted my phone for any updates. They always pass fine if rooted. Only fail if you have messed with bloatware or have a bootloader installed. You even keep the Super User App, but it just has lost root rights so it will no longer work until you re root the device

[Q] Deleted but didn’t back up bloatware – should I hard reset?

N00b error...
I didn’t have the foresight to backup the bloatware on my Droid X in order to be able to update it later (to gingerbread) so now I’m hitting the issue of a failed install when I attempt update.
I’ve run a factory reset a couple of times but with no luck since it only reinstalls what I backedup. I also downloaded and reinstalled the bloatware I remembered removing from chad handy but after doing that it still fails on the update
At this point I’m looking for some options on what I can do. Will a hard reset work or do I run a big risk of bricking the phone? I’ve been poking around the threads to see what I can learn from others but I guess I’m needing a straight set of options rather than trying to mash together from parts of other threads
originally rooted with z4root but unrooted just prior to the factory reset
Android 2.2.1
system version: 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US
what version of android are you on? and are you rooted and what not?
my apologies
originally rooted with z4root but unrooted just prior to the factory reset
Android 2.2.1
system version: 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US
I did the same thing as the OP. I used Titanium Backup to kill stuff like CityID and Verizon Navigator. Now I'm stuck being unable to use the OTA as it checks to see if those bloatware apps are installed (WTF?).
Does a hard reset restore the ROM to it's original state? Or am I just SOL and should go for a custom ROM?
[edit] Still rooted using z4root 1.3,
Android 2.2.1
System Version: 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US

You need to SBF to stock Froyo and update from there. If you want root you'll need the pre-rooted 596 leak as the stock GB is not rootable...........yet.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
The easiest way to fix it would be to just sbf back to stock and then update. If you update ota you'll loose root.

Just like everyone is saying I went the sbf route. Worked like a charm and I'm now on 2.3.3
Thanks everyone

[Q] Why can not I use Titanium to uninstall bloatware?

Hello,
Why it's recommended to Freeze (which requires Pro version of Titanium Backup) instead of just uninstall bloatware?
Once you rooted and modified your OS you can not do in place upgrade to newer ROMs anyway, is not it? So why freeze?
Many won't allow a normal uninstall.

Because you will not be able to install any OTA updates as the update files look for all the bloatware. If anything is missing you are going to see a nice triangle with exclamation mark when you try to update.
This is why it is recommended to freeze those files. That way you can just thaw them before you update.
Does not OTA update will not install also if you rooted your phone and enabled sideloading anyway?

AT&T stuff doesn't matter. It's the Motorola stuff that won't uninstall. For instance the BlurEmail won't work right with out Zimbra email solution with ActiveSync. It won't let me uninstall BlurEmail. I can install the working, stock email.apk that I found searching on XDA along side of it. That gets confusing though because in Applications they are both labeled Email. So, I freeze BlurEmail in Titanium.
If I try to install an OTA, it might try to update BlurEmail. If it does, the OTA update will fail. So, I just un-freeze it, install the OTA update, see if the updates fixed BlurEmail, and then refreeze it if it isn't fixed yet.

Yes you can. You just lose root when you update.

[Q] Question about rooting.

This is my second phone, before i had the HTC Tattoo which were lot's of rooting guide's, custom recovery's and ROM's.
I've rooted mine before on 2.3.2 with Gingerbreak, but i wanted the new android version 2.3.3. So i unrooted my phone with gingerbreak and installed the new android version.
And now i want to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174160
Freeing up some space and memory.
but i need root again.
What is the best way to root my phone?
I found this way? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630
But does it delete all my stuff? And do i need to unroot it if i want to install a software update?
Thanks.

Do you have an unlocked bootloader? the method you posted requires it rooting will not stop you getting official updates, but unlocking your bootloader will, If you try to flash an OTA update with an unlocked bootloader, you will brick your device, bootloaders can now be relocked though, allowing you to flash OTA updates, you can also unroot, simply by removing SU from /system/xbin/

Nope i don't have an unlocked bootloader.
No problem, if you have an locked bootloader, check out this thread for a tutorial on how to root 2.3.3, you will loose all data during the process though

If you flash the uk generic 2.3.2 (from the link AndroHero posted here) then when you do the ota update it will search for the uk generic 2.3.3 which is available so ota will be possible.
As far as backing up you can try MyBackup Pro you will need the paid version tho.
Or use the free MyPhoneExplorer Client to back up your text messages, call logs e.t.c (cannot back up app data with MyPhoneExplorer Client)
Also found App List Backup quite useful as well. Or just look through the free backup apps on the market here
Can I just ask a quick question if I hard reset my phone will I lose root

Ehmm i don't have an UK version.
I'm from the Netherlands and i don't know what firmware version i have.
If it's build-number its .145
Btw now that i've rooted my Xperia Play and updated it over OTA to 2.3.3 can I in future update it to a newer version without losing my root?
Ok next error:
I saved my Apps with ApptoSD.
Later i made a backup of all my apps in MyBackup Pro.
How can I get my saved apps on SD back? I can't find them in de APP launcher, App2SD can't find them? Wtf has happened to all those apps? I can restore them with MyBackup Pro but I can do them only by one because the Xperia Play has ****ty internal memory but a huge SD card...
And now it spontaneous rebooted for the second time...

It does not matter since you will be flashing the uk 2.3.2 (in the guides). So any updates will be the uk updates not netherlands.

If you freeze bloat then you can use ota again when 2.3.4 arrives. If you uninstall anything you will have to reinstall it before you can use ota. Ota needs all the bloat still present on the phone or else it will fail. So i plan to unfreeze my bloat when 2.3.4 arrives and use ota in hopes of keeping root. We dont know if root will be kept when using ota to update to 2.3.4 but i cannot see why it would not work. We will see in october

Never used apps2sd so i cannot comment sorry. Not used my backup pro either but if you can restore them one by one then unfortunately that might be the only way to get the apps data back. Google your apps2sd problem and my backup pro problem and see if other people have had the same problems.

Did you tick the clear user data box when flashing 2.3.2? If you did and it random reboots still you might want to try reflashing 2.3.2, do root then ota again or use SEUS to install a clean 2.3.3 then downgrade to 2.3.2 > root > ota to 2.3.3.

Thanks all,
Everything is fixed.
Deleted all installed apps on SD before flash (.android_secure)
And restored it with MyBackup.
Tomorrow i'm going to backup all the bloat and delete it. So i can restore it when i need it.
But freezing is maybe also a good idea. With this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174160 i got 245 Free mb on internal and that's enough.

Anyway to stop from updating.

So I rooted my at&t v20 h10 using the dirty Santa method. However, I just got home from work and when I went to turn on my phone it was in recovery. I then booted my phone and it says there is a software update available and it is preparing to update. I guess at&t has decided to force this update. I don't want the update as I will probably lose root or even worse it may brick so I just pulled the battery. I have about five seconds after I reboot before it starts to try and prepare the update again. I was pretty sure I had automatic updates turned off. Amy suggestions?
Since you are rooted install Titanium backup from the play store (the pro version is worth the money because you can use it on all your devices). After you install it use it to backup to all the installed apps and then remove the system update app and it won't download or try to install the OTA update.
You can also use a root enabled file manager to delete the downloaded update as well.
Unfortunately I have purchased titanium backup but don't have it installed. As mentioned before the update takes over my phone after about 5 seconds after booting. It won't let me do anything and will just say preparing for update. At first I pulled the battery to stop it. I let it restart last time and it boots into twrp. I have tried looking for the update file in the twrp file manager but no luck finding it.

Can you still fastboot? I saw in another thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/att-h910-update-t3535693/page3 (post 42) a few commands that can possibly kill the update.

Yeah try the fastboot method it's easy to get into. Pull your battery and after you put it back in hold the Volume down key without pressing the power button just plug it into your computer via USB.
Also you should be able to flash your kdz file via download mode and then get TB installed and rip out the system update app so you can avoid the update.
Thank you, The fastboot method worked and got rid of the update. Do you know what to freeze in titanium backup so it won't try to do it again?

On my VZW V20 it was system update. I tend to run a batch action of "Back all user apps + system data" and just uninstall vs a freeze for debloating purposes. Also there's the old method of renaming otacerts.zip under /etc/security to prevent any update that sneakes under the radar.

Update center & FOTA update 7.0 is what I froze,I originally thought it was 3 but those are they only 2 that immediately stood out in my frozen list on Titanium.
Forced Over The Air update more than likely was the culprit.
