If nand is flashable .... - EVO 4G General

Why couldn't your dump a perfect rooted nand from one evo and force flash it over a unrooted nand on another evo. Why would this not work. The answer it would brick the phone would not satisfy my hunger for an answer. Lets discuss.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

My knowledge of root would make me think the unrooted phone would need a custom recovery to do that. I've never heard of force flashing a nandroid.

How would you force flash?

afaik, the only way to manually flash anything is to physically remove the chip and do it outside the phone, cant flash anything thru the phone itself since the Hboot will just stop any attempt cold on its feet, hboot is like your pc's bio, it comes up the second it powers up, so short of physically removing the chip to flash it outside the phone but thats not something the average user can do/has the tools to do

There would be no way to push the files passed hboot or write over hboot
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

Hboot has a security setting that will check for a signature from HTC. Unless that security is gone (hole has been found to hard root device), there is no way around that security check to flash anything. Any change to something signed by HTC will invalidate the signature.

Formatting partitions

I'm not interested in a2sd if that's what your thinking. I had a Rom install go wrong and now I've lost root but can still boot into clockwork recovery. I'm really annoyed by the fact I can boot to recovery for no reason, also I tried to install the. 6 software update and the installation fails then leaves me in recovery mode. I just want to know what would happen were I to format any of the partitions, boot and system come to mind. Please be very specific as I think this may be one way to brick the phone.

It's nearly impossible to brick your phone. I'm still very new to this whole world and the wealth of info out there, but have found if all else fails run the ruu and start all over again from scratch and back up your work frequently. The greatest ways to learn are by messing up and having to start over or figure out what YOU messed up or where YOU went wrong. That and read, read and read some more.... oh and did I mention READ?!
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Lol yeah, I went up to a Sprint store today hoping to get them to redo the 2.1 Ruu and was told that it cannot be done. Based on this, I have no idea how to get back to stock without re-rooting I guess.

Permenant CM Recovery after S-Off...

Ok, quick question....I was able to get S-Off the first try but wasn't sure about flashing CM recovery while preforming the commands so I opted not to install it since I already add it using the zip on my SD. Now, is it possible to install it premantely since I didn't do it then? Or am I suck using to zip on the sd card...Just wondering, thanks.

It is possible using fastboot commands, i extracted the recovery image thanks to hebrewtoyou who provided the command... so yeah you are not stuck, ill pm you with the file and instructions if noone else helps you put first.

What is S OFF? I been seeing that a lot lately.
S-ON and S-Off is (I believe) the NAND security that is put on all Android phones. It's a feature company's (HTC, Samsung) put on our phones to lock it down so we don't change the stock feature, full root access and recovery. With S-Off we now have access to the system partition while our phones are on using a term or apps like root explorer and put on perm recoverys There is more to it but this is just a quick run down. Please if I wrong, by all mean correct me ..Lol. I have only been in the Android world since last march when I got my first android, the behold 2.

I also would like the commands and also is there an unmoded hboot for if we need to send the phone to tmobile and we can make the phone fully stock.

Mostly right yeah, but actually most android phones are s-off. If I remember correctly, only a few ended up being released s-on.

Not while retaining s-off, no. You'd have to place ESPRIMG.zip back in the root of your sd card and boot into hboot and reflash ESPRIMG.zip, which will overwrite your hboot/fastboot, recovery, ROM, and de-root your device.

[Q] Bricked HTC Mytouch 4G?

First off let me start by saying I now know what i did wrong. Next is there anyway i can fix it?
I didn't backup anything and then managed to erase everything... I have CM 6 but as of now all i can get is the boot screen. I tried recovery but that won't work becasue there is no backup. also Before I erased everything i managed to turn s on so now i have no way to turn that off correct? Im basicly looking for a way to restore my phone but if it cant be done then i understand. Right now I am using a samsung vibrant with Nero v3 voodo and understand how to install custom roms now
i have almost the same problem as you I don't know what to do I've looked everywhere.

What do you mean... erase everything? How?
Possible steps:
1. factory reset from H-Boot, see if it boots up normally, then re-root.
2. Install PD15IMG from development section, look it up.
Good luck.
Man, do I feel like an idiot...

Which recovery did you have installed and which h-boot
Did you try seeing if you could s-off through adb? Im not sure if this will work but Download the files you need to get s-off from ur computer and put it on ur SD card via a card reader or some sort, after you get the necessary files put the SD card back into ur phone. Hook it up to ur computer and maybe you can s-off through adb if you can get ur computer to recognize ur phone. Then IF it works, download a rom via computer to it SD card and boot into recovery and flash. Let me know what happens if it works or not

Should have taken my advice from this thread.
I just went thru the same thing and couldn't restore any of the backups it just kept getting stuck on the flash screen. I downloaded the ice glacier rom on to a spare sd card and flashed it thru hboot recovery and it looks like that did the trick.
hi guys if you still cant get your phones working try mobiletechvideos.com, they fixed my phone , my phone wouldn`t do anything .good reliable service, yes its in texas.
Although you didnt create any backups, is it possible that someone can create a backup of a fresh ROM and send that to you?

Just take the SD card and put a new ROM on it. Then go to recovery, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalkik cache.
Then install zip from sd card and find it.
I like using Royal Panache 1.3.
I think it's stock Mobilicity ROM but no stock software from carrier. Good stuff.
MIUI and Cyanogenmod 7.1 are also good candidates.
I'm currently testing out ICS and you can test it out as well (but in your case, probably try a working one first =P) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383629&page=1

Wrong, he just randomly revived a thread that last post was made in July 2011.

He revived quite a few of them, trying to market what I believe to be his product. Just look at his messages. Don't want to write the name of the product, since it appears he's scoring just for that.
I've reported his posts, but didn't see mod response yet.

Problem rooting mt4g 2.2.1

So I've rooted my phone twice following the instructions on theunlockr.com without any problems. Tonight I tried rooting my dads phone and I got temp root using visionary and then was able to get S OFF but now once I rebooted and tried temp rooting it again I can't get it to work. Most of the apps just force close as well. The only thing I can think of is to factory restore by flashing the PD15IMG and then starting completely over. Anyone know why this is happening and what to do?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Try ./gfree. Never fails. This is happening because your dad probably has the bad emmc chip

Restore to stock... Warranty exchange... Then down grade to 2.2.1 then gfree method... Use the youtube video....

People tend to assume stuff without even thinking.
What happened to you, happened because of data corruption. Doesn't say anything about "good" or "bad" eMMC, definitely doesn't suggest that your phone is dead and needs replacement. But this thread suggests that reading, searching and thinking will get you better results than listening to people.
You already got S-OFF.
Most probably the only thing you need to do now is to get into bootloader, factory reset the phone, boot into the OS fresh (which will almost surely eliminate all the FCs you're seeing), install Visionary again, temp-root, and install custom recovery.
If you rooted with root.sh method (means, you have engineering bootloader installed) - you don't need even that. Get your fastboot operational, boot into bootloader, go to "fastboot" menu, connect the phone, download any CWM recovery image from the net, and "fastboot flash recovery your_downloaded_recovery_image.img".
And you might get it even simpler than both of the methods above:
Look in the Development forum for instructions on gaining root when already S-OFF. It's as simple as flashing PD15IMG with only a custom recovery image inside it. Since you're S-OFF, the image will be flashed by the bootloader without questions, and you'll get a custom recovery. The PD15IMG will be found in the right thread.
From there just boot into recovery and install a custom ROM of your choice.
Good luck.
Search before asking next time.

[Q] Help! Power Button Broken, Cant reboot into bootloader (calling all gurus)

Trying to return phone to stock and CANNOT enter the bootloader for it to recognize my stock image on the sd card because the darn power button is broken/stuck.
I try adb reboot bootloader and that sends me into FASTBOOT, NOT bootloader
any other way to get to bootloader (without use of the power button) or flash back the stock rom?
Thanks!
There is an app on market called quick boot that you could try. Hope it doesn't boot into fastboot too. Otherwise just try to flash an unrooted stock rom, that might work for what you need.

I use an app called Widgetsoid, which includes the ability to make a widget that can reboot your phone, Can be set up so that you choose how to reboot (Recovery, Power off, etc).
Requires SU access to reboot with the widget, and please be aware that when I had a couple different roms, the widget simply failed to reboot at all -- for example it works fine when I'm running Darkside Sense 4.0, failed to work at all on meXdroidMod Ghost Chili's rom.
Hope this might help ya out
I found an app called button remapper thanks to I forgot who.
It will remap power,but...
It will not work to turn the phone on,and once you use it to get to recovery, you will need the power button to scroll through,so you'd still be in trouble if its completely broke.
Pm me and I could send you the file when I'm on the computer tonight.
If you want to try.
Or search for button remapper on xda.I don't think its in the market.

How about if you go to install zip from sdcard,or wipe/reset,did I miss something where you can use the trackpad to go back, when there is no go back option?or like I was saying, you would need to hit that trusty power button to ho back.
I don't know,I might have missed it after flashing about 500times.
But pretty sure I use the power button all the time to go back after wiping data, then cache, power to ho back, wipe dalvik, power to go back, install zip from sdcard, power to go back, then reboot system.

Getting a bit sidetracked here, I am trying to revert to stock ROM and cannot because the Power button is broken on this piece of crap and I cannot get to bootloader.
• adb reboot bootloader and that sends me into FASTBOOT, NOT bootloader and does not load image
• no option in Settings > Power or Settings > Applications to disable fastboot (I have gingerbread)
• using CWM recovered > Install zip from file does not work
Can anyone advise a way to revert to stock image without HBOOT, that actually works and does not require the power button?
P.S. this whole thing has really made be disenchanted with the mess that is android right now. Since it seems that it really android is not open or owned by google. Instead owned by the carriers. I should not feel like a criminal for wanting a basic android phone. Makes me almost want to scrap and get an iPhone.
Firstly, its not the Android OS that's the problem. Its your broken ass phone so calm down. If your thinking Android is not open, go ahead and get an iPhone and you'll see what a not open OS is really like.
Secondly...
I read you have Clockwork recovery installed. Flashing this image through Clockwork will at least make it look stock. It is said you will lose root but probably keep S-ON.

Why are you trying to revert to stock if you don't mind me asking? Are u sending it to HTC for them to fix it? They wont care if your rooted they will just wipe your phone and put in the mysense gingerbread rom. I highly advise u to contact HTC and check your warranty. I sent in NY CM7 mt4g and they fixed the power button for free.

Thanks, frustrated is all. Taking it out on Android OS, but really peeved at GOOG
- for having caved into the carriers by letting them bastardize the OS with their mods, forcing me to feel like criminal in modding and jumping through hoops to get a vastly better experience
- for not outbidding verizion on that wireless spectrum and becoming a carrier themselves
Was original N1 owner (first week) and will prob sqitch to galaxy nexus (as soon as they get on more carriers)
Thanks on the suggestions, tried to reflash through CWM several times and keeps giving me installation aborted.. will download again (in case is corrupted) and try again; Interesting other suggestion, will take a look at, but not much time, have to send back replacement tomor
Thx again
You can also try this. It is a nandroid restore somebody made. It seems a bit more involved because it looks like you need to use an older version of clockwork recovery. If I am correct you can find an older version of the recovery and flash it through rom manager, but dont quote me on that one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845756
When I had a MT4G and the EMMC chip died I hooked the phone to a 12 volt battery and fried it. I then called and told them I plugged the phone in to charge one night and the next morning it would not power on. They replaced it no questions asked and I never heard anything about it again.
My mom's power button went out as well. Tmo and HTC flat out refused a replacement MT4G, Saying it was a "known issue". I called them about 10 times total about this problem. They just want to sell me another phone. Full price. Since i've called them so many times they wont even do a Insurance claim.
If this is a "known problem" why the f isn't it being taken care of properly?
Has anyone else had this problem with customer service?
