Having honeycomb would be good experience, phone dont work .. can be ok BUT......... if there will be software support for it, after release service, rest of things will be working smooth.......................................................then hc can be considered otherwise, GB will be better
yea gingerbread or honeycomb im just tried of froyo plus there more usable root apps for gingerbread i tried steve streakdroid 2.0 and got a mess of problems battery drain, 3-4 redoom reboot even after dell factory reset so im on 1.9.1 till something new comes out
I definitely want HC, I guess that is the OS the device was designer for. Froyo or GB is just not using this big screen (same for the apps). But it is true, that I might need phone functions from time to time... maybe later there will be some hack to make calls on HC...
But I am definitely for HC anyway and I am willing to donate after I see at least usable release...
Would GB be nice to have? Sure, is it necessary? Not unless it is as
bullet proof as 2.2.2 for my preference.
I use the PHONE a lot (2000 min a month) for work 75% personal use 25%
(my boss pays 1/2 of my cell bill).
I use pretty much everything on the device, with the exception of music.
I watch a video once in a while, not much, but email, text, web browsing
get used daily.
I need stable, not flaky. If Dell can get GB to work correctly, then I'd update,
otherwise, I'll stick with froyo.
Hmmm,...honeycomb would be very fine, but without phone functions?! no way...the best thing with my Streak is the fact that it integrates all the functions I need for my everday life...
In this case I wouldn´t be able to use dj steve´s honeycomb at all (sad but true)...a working GB version would be, of course, a very fine thing too!
guys, just set up a free VOIP, like google voice, it will even ring your incoming calls.
HC on Streak 5 would be sooooo Epic Winning!
Imagine the PR for Dell it would bring, would probably go from being virtually uknown/unheard of to the new hottest thing!
Somebody get this DJ_Steve fella a well paying corporate android job!

That's at&ts decision. Not dells. Froyo is out for the streak. Most phones that are unlocked get their releases fast as they don't pass through carriers. They are direct from the manufacturer.

just for a comparison, the Italian version of my actual device, HTC touch HD, never got any ROM update because it was branded (not even locked) by an Italian carrier.
anyway. i don't really think there will be a gingerbread update. at least not a dell official one. all the other competitors have made official statements, tweets, and whatnot about updates to 2.3, silence from dell. skeptical... i just hope they won't be inspired by motorola on this one
i see a chance of dell dropping support for the streak on their mobile line. i dont think its done that well and i think its kinda their fault. however, if it stays on the lineup for another couple months, it may just get gingerbread. id be expecting it more from djsteve than dell though. just as a side note: no android phone on att officially has froyo yet. ponder that.

They are still selling it as new on carriers world round. So.... we'll see? But I'm sure we'll get it ported over one way or another! I haven't had much experience with Android, so I have no idea on how to do any of that kind of stuff ... So I'll wait and see if Dell mentions anything!
I think we will get Gingerbread.. Personally, I've seen more and more good news about the Streak and I would hope that because of this Dell would offer to support the Streak's upgrade path.
We all know Gingerbread is said to be more tablet friendly and Dell has marketed our device as a tablet first (phone 2nd). If it's not official from Dell I'm sure someone from XDA will keep the dream alive

nothing better than a 5" screen to see it on lol. I agree though i think it will get gingerbread, for the reason that the Dell 7 will more than likely be announced at CES people will jump to get a cheaper model price wise the streak and see if its good so that they can get the 7 for say business. Im sure it will get gingerbread as soon as it starts rolling out at least the unlocked version will lol. Not many have gingerbread if im not mistaken ive only seen the Nexus with a legit gingerbread .

NFC support could be most hyped hardware thingie on gingerbread but mass market adoption will take time and there are many alternative ways to support such functionality even without a built in IC. Whether streak will get an official update or not depends on dell moving its butt to make it happen but I also use nexus one and it will be gingerized without an NFC IC and hopefully start rolling very very very soon...
More than 2 finger multitouch, gyro capabilities and apps utilizing/supporting such features will be more of my concern rather than specific support for NFC on existing hardware as gingerization rolls out...

I feel it will get gingerbread. Reason is that Google hasnt said that you need to have anything to use gingerbread unlike with Honeycomb its just up to dell to get it done.

Without a doubt the Epic 4g is definitely the most impressive piece of hand-held hardware I have owned to date. I am a long time HTC user and I can promise I will [probably] never go back. There is no other phone on the market that I would rather have for the uses that I use it for. I made my decision wisely after a lot of research. So with that being said, why in the world is so many people so up in arms and worked up over not getting a 2.2 update? Do you really need flash that bad on your phone? If you're spending that much time using flash sites then why not man up and buy yourself a decent netbook? Seriously I don't understand. The only reason I have ever been upset that I didn't have flash was when I was unable to masturbate to my normal free porn site, and instead had to find a mobile version. An inconvenience, yes, but not to the extreme that I cursed samsung. Besides it's much better to have two hands free (for some of us anyway).
So what is it? You want to brag to the girls at the bar that your Epic can do more mflops than a Amsterdam prostitute? Someone please enlighten me here. My experience with 2.1 has been super smooth, responsive, and no app I can throw at will slow it down. In real world use what is the benefit of 2.2? Oh yeah it would be nice to have the new gmail app with the return/forward at the top instead of the bottom, true, but what else?
If you weren't tied to your phone's benchmark like it was the size of your peni$, what seriously is the Epic 2.1 lacking that a 2.2 update would fix?
edit: Keep an eye out for my new rom: Better than froyo. Completely Stock with madthumbs mobile bookmark baked in.

I wondered the same thing for a long time. If you need flash so bad then download the adobe flash app.
Now most of us are on the leaked froyo I'm seeing crap about gingerbread. What's so special about that is what I really wanna know.
I get mad lag on my stock 2.1 phone. This is my second Epic since launch and both lagged after about 12 hours of uptime.
I brought this phone in to Sprint and of course it decides to be all snappy for them. >:-| So my only hope is for the better task management FroYo offers will remedy the lag. That said, sure the lack of an update sucks, but I'm not sweating it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Fine, but seriously... lack of 2.2 is not what kills it for me on this phone... it's the damn screen that's calibrated like ass. Being a photographer, I just have to ask myself... who the f wants to stare at a screen that calibrated to a very cool temp?
2.2 won't help you there, but this will: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...-universal-version-takes-aim-at-more-phones/#

Hmmm.... wonder if any Devs know if theres a way to adjust more advanced settings than RGB... thats great, but It would be nice to be able to ISF calibrate this thing, it does have amazing image potential. May even be able to set up profiles for outside, movie, the retarded 'sports' one, oh wait, think its on that... Set up to work well with the lighting at a Sprint store I would assume...
I'd like to be able to use the audio-out function of the expensive factory dock I bought. I'd also appreciate full voice command support.
There is more to Flash than just websites and video. Froyo also gives you the ability to run Adobe Air applications as well as run Flash content. I already have two Air apps that I've been working on that I will be putting on the market once I've got 2.2 on my Epic and can test them myself.
Not to mention that Google has been updating their core apps and some will now require 2.2. I, for one, don't relish the fact that a phone I bought 2 months ago can't run the latest apps.
And please don't tell me to install a custom ROM. I'm new to Android and this is my primary communication device for personal and business use. I'm not really ready to risk screwing it up just yet.

I can see how it would be frustrating if you are using the epic as your only android device to develop on, but don't they have emulators?
I guess my op q was directed more at real world use. Personal and business uses. I've flashed several 2.2 Roms an Always end up back at baked snack for smoothness, reliability, and battery life. I punish this phone as an account executive. I just have never had a smooth experience with any of the 2.2

I bought the x10 as my first android.
I had very high intentions for it.
But after using it for a few days it was laggy, overheating..
So i figured i should update to the latest firmware and do a full reset.
Loading 2.1 made it only worse..
Then after a grueling 8 months, SE finally replaced the mother board.
You can clearly see by the slightly darkened tint and manufacturing process that this is gona be a good one.
By this point i figured that mabey i was insane and that the hardware was just that weak.
The i loaded CM.. and started applying tweaks i used on my old x10 to improve my phone speed.. "VM_heap = 32, max_actions_per_sec = 30.. you get the idea..
Supreme lord! i love my X10.
And for that i must thank XDA without the friendly help here and innovative idea's.
I must thank all the dev's for taking the initiative and showing SE that freedom shall prevail,
"We will not be bound by your rules, We stand tall we are FFA"
I'm no noob.. i might take a while to really catch on.
But what do you expect from a 27 year old with IQ of 179 and A.D.D.
I love the success and happy stories. I dont see many good ones. Thanks for sharing.

Right..we should thanks all devs here..without them x10 won't become superb..I bought my x10 4 months ago and feel regret at the first time because lack of MT and update..But right now after some tweak and use CM6 as my rom..I love it so much..My friends who has Iphone always admire my x10 screen which has bright, wide screen and with bitsnacker theme..I hope after we got stable custom kernel our x10 become more superb..
It's a good thing you posted your IQ...
That isn't remotely pretentious or anything.
well someone could make a sappy movie out of your story, specially the ending when your IQ is revealed, leaving the audience in silence & awe

Not what i meant. Ie. My iphone dropped calls. It didnt do what a phone was meant for. If you didnt want a phone you shoild get a tablet or an itouch.
A smart phone is a phone not a tablet or computer thats a phone. Its a phone thats a computer (tool as he puts it)as advertised not technically speaking.
A car is not a radio. Cars can have radios installed and removed. My silvia doesnt have a radio. My x10 and iphone make calls and have plans. My itouch does not.

That's fair enough, but I still only use my (phone) for maybe 10% of its use. If I had my way, it would no longer be called a phone or smartphone. Itouches or tablets are too big and don't make calls, therefore no use to me. All I'm saying is that there would be a huge list if things I use my (mobile) for before I'd get to "make phone calls"
but that's just my opinion.
Itouch is ipod touch it fits in yoir pocket and gets wifi.

@OP, I guess higher isn't always better. My IQ certainly isn't that high, but I had the lag problem resolved a week after purchasing back in November with root, JIT, and junk apps removed. I guess I was dumb enough to look to others for help. ;-)
However, I do agree that Wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V05 and Z's Free X10 definitely took things to the next level. Really looking forward to trying custom Kernel ROMs shortly, and SE official 2.3.3 Gingerbread update in late June/early July.

00 ROMs are for unlocked Streaks. If you don't have a Windows PC to flash though, that could be somewhat problematic. In my experience, the OTA upgrades tend to be very flaky, and thus copying the update.pkg to the SD card manually is often a better bet.
i do have an ubuntu laptop..
the last time i used flashboot was on my sisters windows laptop but she does not have it anymore i dont know how to flashboot on linux (is it even possible?) i cant even install StreakMod Recovery anymore without flashboot
I would find a copy of Windows if I were you, because I don't think there is a Linux native version of fastboot out there.
google for fastboot for ubuntu, i don´t have the url here, but i´ve sucessfull used fastboot on ubuntu 11.10
Thanks jitin02 for sharing the news.
It would be nice if they provide a better launcher instead of laggy Stage UI.

Whatever they include with it you can change it easily enough so don't worry about it.

that's great news. there are a couple of things that I wish I could see updated and I am writing those down in hope that, maybe the guys developing it read this forum:
* New dialer that:
- works in all dpi's (preferably without visual bugs).
- has smart search (searching for contacts with the stock dialer on streak is a pain).
* gtalk video and audio
* toggles in the notification area (like the samsung touchwiz or cyanogen mod). This is actually a new feature but one that I think that everybody would love.
* fix fastboot erase command (I am not sure that's actually fixable by firmware but since its a wishlist )
* and the most important of all: PLEASE, release the drivers sources so we can port other ROMS, that's actually the single best thing that you could be doing for fellow streakers.
According to Phandroid.com, the Fascinate on Verizon is getting the Gingerbread Update!
http://phandroid.com/2011/12/01/samsung-fascinate-gingerbread-update-ready-to-roll/
Now T-mobile and Samsung, I have to ask, where is the Vibrant's update?
Galaxy S internatinoal got gingerbread.
Galaxy S 4G got gingerbread.
Captivate has gingerbread leaks.
Fascinate is getting gingerbread.
Vibrant Canada I think got gingerbread also.
So where is the T-mobile Vibrant Gingerbread????????????????????????
Might be more power full if posted in samsung website forum.
yea, post that there. Ive given up on GB anyway, custom roms are better anyway
Accept that it's not coming and 2.2 is the terminal firmware for the Vibrant. You can thank the T-959v for that.

Imagine how better they'd be with Gingerbread source.
Eh doesnt matter anymore. We got devs doing ics, in a week or two more it'll run flawlessly.
wait.. correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the fascinate the same hardware minus the modem (cdma)? if this is the case devs could just as easily rip all the files needed to complete our driver issues on GB. if not oh well.
I believe there is something different with the GPS drivers on the Vibrant, which is why we have so many great ROMs without very good GPS.
Seriously? Another rant about gb for the vibrant? Just flash an i9000 port, and stop complaining. Or get another phone. There are early builds of ics popping up already. the vibrant was one of the first to get an ics build actually....
You disappeared after i showed you battery life on simply honey v6 beta....hahaha...where'd you go buddy?

Why do you want GB now, when it's a year late? They should release ICS rather than GB. ICS is awesome on the vibrant btw

I9000 ports are good, but I need gps daily. If Im not mistaken the only GB kernel that has GPS is about 6 months old. We get an up to date GB kernel with working gps and more will flood the I9000 ROM section.
you guys are stupid for even thinking we'll get a update, if we do im sorry and i will cut my dogs ear off.
P.S. get your ass on ICS.

I understand the need for GPS, but it's really a hit or miss with vibrants. I'll pretty sure i got the first run of units, so gps never really worked well for me, no matter what ROM I'm on.
Granted, if i use the gb bullet kernel, i can get a lock and even navigation, but it takes a while. I just use maps to give me directions, then follow them. Simple solution to a simple problem.

I would agree. I also got one of the first batches of Vibs. I did the hardware fix and things got much better for me. Give it a look if you haven't tried it. May help.
Edit:
Note - my wife and I both got Vibs together. Mine has the hardware fix and hers does not. Mine locks A LOT faster than hers. She is on a 2.2 ROM and Im on Miui as well.

I tried the hardware fix myself, but only by bending the contact up. What exactly did you do to apply the hardware fix?

MIUI-NB edition has a working gps, no need for hardware fix. but go for an older release for more stability

Yep, I'm getting on iOS in January when I switch carriers...
Oh, you said ICS... My bad...
Sorry, ICS = Different look, same nastiness. UI Latency, Adware galore, inconsistent UI across apps, poor market policing, etc.
I'm to the point where I just want something that works. Android is starting to feel like WIndows Me to me now...

Everyone has a choice. Thats why I love Android and iOS. Both have their pros and cons. I am NOT a fanboy. I can point out both advantages for both platforms, and both have disadvantages.
I'm just glad this wasn't like 5 years ago where the only choice for a smartphone = iPhone. I did own a iPhone 3GS, jailbroke it, found nothing interesting to jailbreak except to pirate apps... which i pointless to me. I prefer android, it gives me a change. But again, opinions are opinions.
Tmoble already has the sgs 2 and the sgs 4g. Not to mention that the vibrant was discontinued months ago there's honestly no point in a business point of view updating a phone there not making any money on

And this is why we need source direct from samsung
CM DROPS VIBRANT SUPPORT DUE TO 911 INABILITY:
"We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code."
http://phandroid.com/2011/12/12/cya...le-galaxy-s-support-dropped-due-to-911-issue/
Now do you see why it is so important to have put pressure on Samsung/T-Mobile to release an update to Gingerbread? This is why! Developers are talented but they can't work miracles. We need source/drivers for proper 911 and GPS capabilities just to name a few.
