Without a doubt the Epic 4g is definitely the most impressive piece of hand-held hardware I have owned to date. I am a long time HTC user and I can promise I will [probably] never go back. There is no other phone on the market that I would rather have for the uses that I use it for. I made my decision wisely after a lot of research. So with that being said, why in the world is so many people so up in arms and worked up over not getting a 2.2 update? Do you really need flash that bad on your phone? If you're spending that much time using flash sites then why not man up and buy yourself a decent netbook? Seriously I don't understand. The only reason I have ever been upset that I didn't have flash was when I was unable to masturbate to my normal free porn site, and instead had to find a mobile version. An inconvenience, yes, but not to the extreme that I cursed samsung. Besides it's much better to have two hands free (for some of us anyway).
So what is it? You want to brag to the girls at the bar that your Epic can do more mflops than a Amsterdam prostitute? Someone please enlighten me here. My experience with 2.1 has been super smooth, responsive, and no app I can throw at will slow it down. In real world use what is the benefit of 2.2? Oh yeah it would be nice to have the new gmail app with the return/forward at the top instead of the bottom, true, but what else?
If you weren't tied to your phone's benchmark like it was the size of your peni$, what seriously is the Epic 2.1 lacking that a 2.2 update would fix?
edit: Keep an eye out for my new rom: Better than froyo. Completely Stock with madthumbs mobile bookmark baked in.

I wondered the same thing for a long time. If you need flash so bad then download the adobe flash app.
Now most of us are on the leaked froyo I'm seeing crap about gingerbread. What's so special about that is what I really wanna know.
I get mad lag on my stock 2.1 phone. This is my second Epic since launch and both lagged after about 12 hours of uptime.
I brought this phone in to Sprint and of course it decides to be all snappy for them. >:-| So my only hope is for the better task management FroYo offers will remedy the lag. That said, sure the lack of an update sucks, but I'm not sweating it.

Fine, but seriously... lack of 2.2 is not what kills it for me on this phone... it's the damn screen that's calibrated like ass. Being a photographer, I just have to ask myself... who the f wants to stare at a screen that calibrated to a very cool temp?
2.2 won't help you there, but this will: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...-universal-version-takes-aim-at-more-phones/#

Hmmm.... wonder if any Devs know if theres a way to adjust more advanced settings than RGB... thats great, but It would be nice to be able to ISF calibrate this thing, it does have amazing image potential. May even be able to set up profiles for outside, movie, the retarded 'sports' one, oh wait, think its on that... Set up to work well with the lighting at a Sprint store I would assume...
I'd like to be able to use the audio-out function of the expensive factory dock I bought. I'd also appreciate full voice command support.
There is more to Flash than just websites and video. Froyo also gives you the ability to run Adobe Air applications as well as run Flash content. I already have two Air apps that I've been working on that I will be putting on the market once I've got 2.2 on my Epic and can test them myself.
Not to mention that Google has been updating their core apps and some will now require 2.2. I, for one, don't relish the fact that a phone I bought 2 months ago can't run the latest apps.
And please don't tell me to install a custom ROM. I'm new to Android and this is my primary communication device for personal and business use. I'm not really ready to risk screwing it up just yet.

I can see how it would be frustrating if you are using the epic as your only android device to develop on, but don't they have emulators?
I guess my op q was directed more at real world use. Personal and business uses. I've flashed several 2.2 Roms an Always end up back at baked snack for smoothness, reliability, and battery life. I punish this phone as an account executive. I just have never had a smooth experience with any of the 2.2

While for many, this update won't mean much, for others is actually a very important update. Our current gmail app is seriously crippled for some email users, no android management tools, no push notifications plus a more restricted market. I briefly switched and was stunned at the improvements made to the gmail app...eventually had to switch back though because my Battery life took a *HUGE* hit. Samsung/Sprint is really starting to drop the ball IMO.
2.2.1 is still being worked on,,,but the talk around the water cooler is 5-6 months for gingerbread,,,but it will be ported long before then.

Who cares, use DK28. It works great and has the best battery life I have ever seen on a smart phone. Most recently, from a full charge with calls, texts, internet browsing, emailing, facebook, and over an hour of angry birds I got 31 hours of use before I put it on the charger at 6%. I used it the whole day, left it off the charger for the night and used it the next day just to see how long it would last. If they are making these kind of improvements I an very happy with the progress and they can have as much time as needed.

Are you trying to say that is the release date? If so, you just destroyed your own credibility because they would never release a huge update on a holiday. No one wants to be stuck with a broken phone on Christmas sitting on hold for tech support. They most likely have less staff working too, which would just compound the problems.
funy thing is I dont care if you think its credible,Im putting it out there,if Im flammed Im flammed...And to clarify what my info is,12/20 is when they want to have RC2 ready for .4 version test phones, the window is mostly 5 days for bugs to be reported, now we are looking at 12/25-26,then if it is given the ok,it will roll out before the end of the year as expected, not everyone will get the OTA the first day.So I cant say when you will get it,only when they expect it to be done....And if you follow my trail, posted exactly when DK28 would hit 3 weeks before,I said 26-29. And Ive said this before,DK28 was supposed to be final with an update 2 weeks after the roll out to fix any unseen bugs.I mentioned this here and on SDX,does that seem credible enough for you?

Is it just me or does it make you mad when you see someone with a $500 Smartphone and just use it for things like Facebook. I know this guy who has a Captivate and only uses it for facebook and nothing else. I asked him to look at his phone and he hadn't even updated the software to 2.2. Wth!!! He was like oh its no big deal. Another girl I know has the Mytouch 4g and has no clue what her phone can do cause its all about facebook. Rrrrrrr that just makes me so mad to see a awesome piece of technology go to waste just cause they want to look cool with a Smartphone. I have a Vibrant and I have Bionix with all of these other add one like 5 signal bar and the 3g icon instead of the H. Its made my phone killer. Its fast as hell and is a million times better then any stock phone. Team Whiskey is the the most amazing Dev. Team. It doesn't make me mad, in fact it makes me happy. Those are the type of people who call all android phones "droids" because of the commercials. They follow the trend and its what's cool right now. As long as they're happy with their phone and they keep buying its good for the rest of us because the manufacturers and the service providers get their money, and bringing us better phones and software.
No you are on the mark. And it's the masses that don't care about updates and make it hard for those of us who want the latest release on our handsets to have our voices heard. Which is why samsuck will continue making billions and ignore customer support...

I think you're just getting riled up over stuff that shouldn't really concern you. I have a lot of friends like that--they have iPhones and Android phones and barely exploit the potential. But so what? They're getting what they want out of the phone. And they're building up the smartphone userbase, which benefits us all.
As for not updating, why should they if the phone does everything they want already? Not everyone is interested in tinkering with their phones.
For example, my wife has an OG Droid and I don't think she's even changed the wallpaper or downloaded more than five apps. And so? She probably uses her phone for real work more than anyone else I know. She's probably on the phone 4-5 hrs a day and sends/receives hundreds of emails. The Droid works perfectly for her, so why should she care to mess with it? The phone itself just does not interest her.

This is very true.
The world is full of simpletons and absent minded people who are incapable of doing any critical thinking that are just waiting for someone to make decisions for them and lead them around by the nose. It's frustrating in other, more important aspects of life...in the smartphone department though not so much.

You forget not all people are technical. They buy phones for phone calls. Just because someone uses there phone for facebook and phone calls doesn't mean they are wasting a phone. They paid for it so let them do what ever they want. If they want to mod it then they will learn how to. To each their own.
Just because a smartphone can do anything doesn't mean its users necessarily use it for everything.

Heh, I really think it's just us at XDA for the most part. Just remember that everyone has different obsessions.
My wife thinks it's crazy that I would spend $500 on a phone or $2000 on a laptop, but then again I don't understand how she can drop $300 on a purse (and I can imagine this kind of thread among handbag enthusiasts: ("OMG, how can some women carry such cheap-ass knock-offs. Don't they know? Don't they care?").
Last example, my friend has some cheap Honda that he bought for commuting. He doesn't care about cars at all, but he's had multiple guys ask him what mods he's done. I'm sure that to these guys in the rice-burner community, my friend is some luddite dumbass because he hasn't installed some mods that would boost his car's performance. But again, he just doesn't care about turning his Honda into a street-racing machine.
It's their money, their loss if they don't want to learn.......most people are so lame when it comes to techie things it scares me, At work I have people asking me to fix their computers (I'm not I.T.) I look at it and I tell them i can fix it......... uhh 60% of the time it is unplugged........So, that's the people we deal with... but remember as long as they buy we benefit from the volume of sales

WebOS simply bests android and ios in usability. Hopefully the crap that was wrong with the OS was hopefully solved. The way multitasking is handled is best among the mobile OS' that alone sets it above the others. Androids great and has a huge following. Same for IOS just too constricted. I dont need yall to agree either.
Anyway its my kind of OS.

I mean they are going with the same cpu as the mytouch 4g over-clocked to 1.4ghz and wait till summer to release it? thats not really going to stand out much against all the dual core phones...

lol.. well.. only more than 3% of the android apps have to be "good" in order to beat palms 100% of 5,000+.
but thats not the point. no one cares about # of apps (except poor W7 Phones).
seriously, no body switched phones for # of "apps". cough apple, cough, if 3% of Apple's App Store (+400,000) was useful, there would be over 12,000 useful iphone apps, and no one wants 12,000 apps on their phones.
but, i actually think the Pre will do good because Android is a POS getting their act together (we have to wait until 2.3 or 3.0+ for native Android video chat? are you sh*ting me?, wake up Mountain View, CA, you might be late, but you still missed the boat.). We have 4G (WiMax/LTE/etc), we want video chat on our phones, full web browsing, corporate email/calendars, and other standard features, and we want it to work, period.
The HP Pre 3 will hit a sweet spot of phone features vs. carrier support vs. developers. It probably will not be popular (overall), but, if you needed it, I'm sure it will work.
after that, its anyones game... blackberry, android, webos, ios, w7.. (+/- 3 years from now.)

Not to mention, how many of those apps are not actually apps? For example search for adw launcher, you get 100 themes or more... they're not functional apps.

What he said.
i would recommend you browse the Evo general forum and you will know what we mean.sprint's data speeds have been horrible for the past 3 months or so,and this seems to be a nationwide problem and not an isolated issue.

I'm going to go get the evo this weekend because Verizon is or has been to exspensive. I've been doing the proper research for root and I think I got that down for the most part. I gotta say I'm pretty impressed with the amount of roms you guys have compared to the dx. I'm addicted to flashing roms which is very frustrating when it comes to the dx as there is such lack of roms for it, oh well who fukin cares cry your self a river build a bridge and get over it..so here's my question . Can I flash different roms over top of each other??? Like for instance from cm7 to whatever rom. I know you have to wipe data and stuff already. Is there anything important I need to know??? Thanks

As you can see, we have our share of trolls here on the EVO side of XDA but you should be used to that by now coming from DX. These low-lifes are rampant on these forums, just ignore them and you will be ok...
Regarding your question. Technically, if you are flashing a newer version of a rom like say going to CM7 2.2 coming from 2.1, technically you do not have to wipe everything, just dalvic cache but if you are flashing a completely new rom then it's best to completely wipe everything. There is a zip called "format all" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785271
somewhere in the OP in this link, and you can just flash that zip before you go to a new rom and it automatically wipes absolutely everything for you, so you won't have to worry.
I highly recommend you use the format all zip before every rom update or change, just to be safe. And make sure you create a nand backup before hand.
Welcome to the dark side! I'm sure you will love your evo!
P.S if you're looking for roms to try out, particularly AOSP, I highly recommend MIUI. For a sense rom, go with any of Calkulins.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Come on dude is sprint really that bad??? I'm on wifi most of the time anyways. If its really that slow ill just take it back and if the wont take it back then ill show them how slow my car can drive through there window accidently and my peice of **** car drives pretty slow. That has been acknowledged and is being worked on and will no doubt certainly be fixed soon.
Also, refunds are issued for those with the issue.

I'm telling you man, do not get into any kind of conversations with some of these folks. Their goals in life are to literally be useless. Ignore them and just do what you gotta do. Don't let anyone alter your decision.
Disregard what the morons are saying about Sprint. Sprint is by far the best value in wireless services. The amount of money you'll be saving will more than make up for any tiny nuisances you'll find with Sprint. Besides, you have 30 days to try out to see if you like it. If you feel it's not worth it to you, just leave and go back... no questions asked.
The EVO is kinda old news now. I would wait for the next big dual core android with AMOLED action. And the number of roms for EVO actually is not all that impressive. Most of them are regurgitations of others. There are a couple of good sense options (although I think rooted stock sense is best) and then there is cyanogen.... which is the best there is IMO... And now it has the extra G.... not that the 4G has been very useful to me.
I average 1.5 to 1.6 Mbps down and 600 to 800 Kbps up.
That ain't bad for 3G.

Yep me too. Occasionally it will be really slow but that only lasts for minutes.
@OP- Answer to your original question- Yes, you can flash ROM after ROM but you need to wipe in between flashing. One of our awesome devs Calkulin made a script that formats everything completely that is an awesome tool to use before flashing. Makes for a good clean install. You can find it in his mods thread in the theme section.

Yes, god forbid people take the thread off topic.
He didn't ask for opinions.
He asked about ROM flashing.
God forbid people keep on topic.
I thought this was interesting, and super lame. Dont know if its old news, buts its the first I heard of it.
No more adobe flash support for mobile?

I just received an update on Flash 11. So It might be the last
Hmm, I wonder if Google might change it's mind about flash now, they might go back with Apple and Microsoft and replace flash

Flash is old hat though....
Technology is moving forward. We have things like HTML5 replacing the need for flash.
Flash is slow, clunky, and a battery and resource hog. Good riddance!
I dunno, I personally love having flash. I like my web pages to render exactly like a desktop, cuz my phone IS my desktop.

I have always hated Flash but it's the best we have and everyone uses it unfortunately. Losing this ability on our phones is a bad thing no matter how you slice it. If we had something better that was more universal that's a different story but we don't.

Do u think its possible Google has something up their sleeve. They have to realize how many people bought android because of flash. I would hope so at least

It does not....No one I know bought an Android for the sole reason that it plays Flash, and if anyone did, they're an idiot. I bought one because I could customize it, root it, and a boatload of other things that I can't do with an iPhone. HTML5 is way better than Flash anyway. We'll all be better off because of this.

Ummm, actually, Flash is one of the main things I was excited about when I moved to android on June 4th 2010 (evo launch).
I came from WinMo. The skyfire browser on WinMo supported flash, and finally provided a desktop experience on my phone.
Reading the comments on the article I linked to seemed to support the argument that HTML5 could be great, if it was developed a lot further than its current state. Which means, as OstrichSak said, what until then?
And hopefully google DOES have something up their sleeve

It's not like it's disappearing out of thin air tomorrow.....They'll still use it until HTML5 becomes the standard.

Funny choice of words because they will still be using AIR. lol
They aren't supporting mobile flash "in browser". But they are still supporting flash on mobile devices via AIR.
