It's probably very possible. I haven't seen any devices that are listed that have higher specs than the streak

Possible? yes. Probable? no. As slow as Dell is updating to push Froyo out for the AT&T users, I dont see this ever happening with Gingerbread lol

That's at&ts decision. Not dells. Froyo is out for the streak. Most phones that are unlocked get their releases fast as they don't pass through carriers. They are direct from the manufacturer.

just for a comparison, the Italian version of my actual device, HTC touch HD, never got any ROM update because it was branded (not even locked) by an Italian carrier.
anyway. i don't really think there will be a gingerbread update. at least not a dell official one. all the other competitors have made official statements, tweets, and whatnot about updates to 2.3, silence from dell. skeptical... i just hope they won't be inspired by motorola on this one

i see a chance of dell dropping support for the streak on their mobile line. i dont think its done that well and i think its kinda their fault. however, if it stays on the lineup for another couple months, it may just get gingerbread. id be expecting it more from djsteve than dell though. just as a side note: no android phone on att officially has froyo yet. ponder that.

They are still selling it as new on carriers world round. So.... we'll see? But I'm sure we'll get it ported over one way or another! I haven't had much experience with Android, so I have no idea on how to do any of that kind of stuff ... So I'll wait and see if Dell mentions anything!

I think we will get Gingerbread.. Personally, I've seen more and more good news about the Streak and I would hope that because of this Dell would offer to support the Streak's upgrade path.
We all know Gingerbread is said to be more tablet friendly and Dell has marketed our device as a tablet first (phone 2nd). If it's not official from Dell I'm sure someone from XDA will keep the dream alive
Streaking with the XDA app!

ETA december 31, 2613! lol

Hopefully before streak EOL announcement...

For sure it will get it. Spoke to my dell guy inside and he says demand is up with a 15 day lead time...
What you also have to realize is the dell 7 streak will be out soon and businesses like mine will snatch them up... when people learn about the streak 5 they will buy.
I knew little to nothing about it and I am a tech person.. until my dell guy handed me one to play with...

nothing better than a 5" screen to see it on lol. I agree though i think it will get gingerbread, for the reason that the Dell 7 will more than likely be announced at CES people will jump to get a cheaper model price wise the streak and see if its good so that they can get the 7 for say business. Im sure it will get gingerbread as soon as it starts rolling out at least the unlocked version will lol. Not many have gingerbread if im not mistaken ive only seen the Nexus with a legit gingerbread .

I think theres no gingerbread update for streak
the main new fiture in ginger bread is nfc suported, but dell doesnt have nfc chip on it,,
maybe gingerbread available in the next streak (opus one)

NFC support could be most hyped hardware thingie on gingerbread but mass market adoption will take time and there are many alternative ways to support such functionality even without a built in IC. Whether streak will get an official update or not depends on dell moving its butt to make it happen but I also use nexus one and it will be gingerized without an NFC IC and hopefully start rolling very very very soon...
More than 2 finger multitouch, gyro capabilities and apps utilizing/supporting such features will be more of my concern rather than specific support for NFC on existing hardware as gingerization rolls out...

I feel it will get gingerbread. Reason is that Google hasnt said that you need to have anything to use gingerbread unlike with Honeycomb its just up to dell to get it done.

This lol. All the 2.2 roms depended on Samsung's leaks as a base to have full functionality.
This would be exciting if we had received 2.2 back in September, when it was promised. Samsung is a joke, but we all know that already.

I don't see it. And if it is true, I'm guessing it'd take til June of 2011 to get it in the Galaxy S. Which then would be delayed to July, then August, then September.....
I really think Samsung does it on purpose. I've gone through so many scenarios as to why they are delaying FroYo for so long, and I just cannot reason it. I am certain it is on purpose. Why? That's the one million dollar question. Could it be to sell more Nexus S'? Could be. But no one knows for sure except Samsung...
I just don't see how a company as big as Samsung can't devote the manpower to put this thing together and up and running months ago.

Because Samsung never have to made products that needs long term commitmenets. They make TV, Monitors, and Flash Disks, and dumb phones which were all sales are final kind of product; as long as there are no large manufacturer defect, it's pretty much end of support - minus some lemons.
They did have the omnia series, but they develop the OS in house, but was also slow as hell to push out updates. That's the only counter argument I foresee.
Overall, Samsung is just very bad at software, kind of like Sony before PS3.
Tip! Only believe what Google says!

Fascinate Getting Gingerbread 2.3 Instead of Froyo 2.2

I just spoke to a Rep at the Verizon store in Humble, Texas named Isabel. She told me that she spoke to their Samsung Rep today and he told her that they are skipping the Froyo update and going straight to Gingerbread. No word on when though.

Stuff like this means nothing. We've seen things like this one too many times. Take nothing they say at face value, because it's already been proven to be false a majority of the time in the past.
Samsung reps and Verizon reps don't know much more than we do. Take anything they say with a grain of salt.

it would be a huge victory for Samsung to pass on froyo and release GB within the week. It would catapult them past HTC and motorola in the significance area of Android development. I think they need to do this if they want to regain lost respect.
Since Nexus S is galaxy S with GB on it already and is basically 99.9 the same as our phone, I definitely think it's doable. I would definitely prefer gingerbread. I want it just for the newer copy/paste feature.
God man, all this misinformation. Let me clear it up for you. We are most likely NOT going to skip froyo (2.2). Gingerbread (2.3) has ALREADY BEEN RELEASED and it is on a phone called the Nexus S on T-Mobile USA. Honeycomb (2.4 or 3.0) is for tablets in its current form. Man, this getting ridiculous.

As stated in first post Steve is waiting on a set of drivers that Dell cannot release do to licensing. Dell has released the shareware parts of Android, but without the modem drivers he is up the creek without a paddle. Now he has a standing offer to anybody that knows how to write code, he will gladly accept any working drivers you have to offer. Oh...that´s what EOL means... Not very moodenhancing...Dell should open up the drivers to the devs now...
The should be ashamed of themselves for creating a device with so many screen problems.
Unless they release another 5" device, if/when the time comes, I guess I'll see if I can find a 4.5 or greater screen and move on. I still love my streak, even with the quirks it has.
I'm happy with my Dell Streak 5 running Spidla's custom Simple Streak 1.2 ROM. Though, Gigerbread would be nice. I hope that Dell is working on it, despite the fact that it's the EOL for the Dell Streak 5.
I'm sure this means no future o/s updates (or any other kind of software updates) for our streaks.
Please someone tell me that im dreaming PLZZZZZZZZZ
Dell <----- F****ING BASTARDS
yeah **** news, probably the reason why DJ Steve and everyone else weren't working on any further updates. I guess they got a heads up before this came out.
Poor Streak, I guess I'll start hunting for a new phone as this one is nearly 12 months old, devices are bound to die just outside their warranty period
as long as we're around the streak will never die!
Lol no ones died. Just because dell have discontinued the streak doesn't mean they evaporate! Great phone just not marketed well enough
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
i too am sad.. but after talking to the wife about her streak, she wasn't really thrilled with it with the out of the box experience, slow, botchy..etc.
It will be a year or so before we see something new, from what I understand there are good reasons, mostly to develop a strategy for the software and better security.
I am itching for a new 5" with dual core, which wouldn't be an issue to make, but they are really taking their time to probably perfect both hardware and software for a huge release... Just hope it doesn't turn into a WEBOS disaster where no one cares and everyone else has already moved on.... but then again, I may have moved on already by then to at least two other phones.
It is funny how a device has EOL.. yet people still stop me and have never seen it before and want one instantly.
samsung is gonna release a 4.65" phone dunno if dell will try again with a 5" as it didn't go "as expected" for them
atleast it did go like their craptacular lappys..

And do they realize that it comes with the uber-slow StageUI out of the box? you also have to realize that most people don't tweak their devices at all. Both of those being said, most people are pretty positive about the size of my phone, but I always get the "does that even fit in your pocket?", and "why would you want a phone that big"... people like it, but not enough to buy it.
Plus, by design, it had plenty of flaws, they are probably tired of selling a device with such a high return/warranty rate.
gutted i got my phone on a 18 month contract & ive got 7 month left to go

what numbers are unlocked streaks? I updated to 360 a while back which is a 00 but I don't have a windows pc to flashboot any more
00 ROMs are for unlocked Streaks. If you don't have a Windows PC to flash though, that could be somewhat problematic. In my experience, the OTA upgrades tend to be very flaky, and thus copying the update.pkg to the SD card manually is often a better bet.

the last time i used flashboot was on my sisters windows laptop but she does not have it anymore i dont know how to flashboot on linux (is it even possible?) i cant even install StreakMod Recovery anymore without flashboot
I would find a copy of Windows if I were you, because I don't think there is a Linux native version of fastboot out there.
google for fastboot for ubuntu, i don´t have the url here, but i´ve sucessfull used fastboot on ubuntu 11.10
Thanks jitin02 for sharing the news.
It would be nice if they provide a better launcher instead of laggy Stage UI.

Whatever they include with it you can change it easily enough so don't worry about it.

that's great news. there are a couple of things that I wish I could see updated and I am writing those down in hope that, maybe the guys developing it read this forum:
* New dialer that:
- works in all dpi's (preferably without visual bugs).
- has smart search (searching for contacts with the stock dialer on streak is a pain).
* gtalk video and audio
* toggles in the notification area (like the samsung touchwiz or cyanogen mod). This is actually a new feature but one that I think that everybody would love.
* fix fastboot erase command (I am not sure that's actually fixable by firmware but since its a wishlist )
* and the most important of all: PLEASE, release the drivers sources so we can port other ROMS, that's actually the single best thing that you could be doing for fellow streakers.
