I know some people have been turned off from the lack of updates from Samsung/Verizon or whatever. (I blame Bing)
Unlike other people, after owning the Fascinate.. I actually would love to buy another Samsung phone.
I can't give up the SAMOLED screen. I actually like the over-saturated colors. They give it a POP in comparison to other screens.
What's next.... Samsung Droid Charge... meh.... Not sure why this has no appeal to me? Anyone else feel the same?
However, the Galaxy S 2, I'm completely drooling over this phone....Anyone think the Galaxy S 2 would come to VZW - or the US... ?

$299 WITH contract?!? The prices keep creeping higher and higher with a contract for new equipment. All it means is that I'll have to wait a little while longer (unfortunately). Prices always drop, new phones come, etc.
credit card = no contract lol, normally buy a phone then sell old to help make up difference, but sgs2 will be my next phone for sure. updates are not the selling factor for me the hardware is and I own a lot of sammy products and they have always been top-notch

There is always Certified Pre-Owned as well. This phone was an upgrade for me from the OG Droid 1 and it costed me 49 bucks. Best 50 I've ever spent. So hopefully by the time my contract expires I'm hoping CPO Galaxy S 2's will be available.

WHOA. I had no idea it was that close to release, I thought it would come out in September at the earliest. Geez, I wonder if I Verizon will let me trade in my Fascinate for it, and I just pay whatever difference there is. My phone sound quality sucks, the GPS is a mixed bag, and I can complain about them not pushing Froyo to their phone yet (yes, I do currently have a Froyo rom on my phone, but it's still a legitimate complaint since it's a leak I have running). I really really want the new Galaxy S II. Worst case scenario, I'll have to find some way of getting the money to purchase it for full-price off contract.
According to a leaked Verizon roadmap, the SGS2 may arrive as early as next month on Verizon(with LTE!):
"Verizon’s spring roadmap has 8 Android phones releasing in less than 60 days"
I am sorry, but that Road Map is fake (I hope I'm wrong). I would LOVE the S2 to come out next month... but... I'd look for it by the end of the summer. The only question is, will it be the actual S2, or an altered step child like the Fascinate to the Original Galaxy S?
We should make a list for upcoming non-Samsung phones.

that sucks that it's going to be lte. I don't even have it in my area, and by then I'm guessing the price of data plans will have gone up for 4g phones

I know I definitely plan on making the S2 my next phone. I'm with the OP in that I'm not at the least turned off by Samsung. I blame Verizon. I've been through this before with the OG Storm. Yes, Rim was responsible for some hardware issues but in the software realm, Verizon sucked in releasing timely firmware to fix software glitches. I had to rely upon the BB community in order to get my phone up to snuff. If Verizon didn't have such a large and reliable network, I'd leave them.

I am sensing SUNDAY June 12th AT&T release of Samsung Galaxy Attain (almost 11 months after the Captivate)!!!
How long was it from when they made the announcement last year did the Galaxy S actually go on sale on AT&T?
Here you go, last years dates I posted earlier
kreoXDA said:
Do you guys remember how the first Galaxy was introduced on the 4 carriers last year?
Let me remind you
June 4th - first release in Asia
June 29th - launch party in New York City where it was first announced that 4 models were coming to 4 carriers, with no dates. (+25 days)
Later on, gradually, release dates were being announced about 1-3 weeks prior to a particular release. The phone was released as follows:
T-Mob - July 15th (+41 days)
AT&T - July 18th (+44 days)
Sprint, keyboarded CDMA version - August 30th (+87 days)
Verizon, CDMA version - September 9th (+97 days)
We learned that SGS1 was even coming to the United States 3.5 weeks after the phone was released in Asia.
The quickest provider T-Mob got it almost 6 weeks after the first country.
The slowest provider VZW - 3 months after.
So give this some time, sit back, relax, wait for bug reports from the UK beta testers , and enjoy your fixed (or maimed) version in a few short weeks.
peace

Note the US Launch party last year was 25 days after first international release, and this event is around 25 days after Korea/UK release
lol after dealing with the ATT Craptivate for a year I'll gladly "beta test" the vanilla samsung GS2
good luck with your carrier updates. I'm done purchasing US phones "variants" that force you to use reorient kernels for the Roms.
Thanks for the release date info. Looks like they're following a similar schedule... just bumped ahead 1 month from last year =)
Still, as much as I'd like to wait for a US variant... I don't really want to have to sign a contract to get one, nor do I want to put up with the bloatware and filth they put on the phone. Rooting and flashing ROMs on my T-mobile spec Galaxy S was annoying, having to ODIN back to certain firmwares before being able to flash a new ROM.
And the one question that I'm still wondering... will the US be getting a tegra version? That would suck =(

i've been off contract since Dec. i had originally settled on getting the Infuse when it was first announced but instantly fell in love with the SGS2 and decided to wait. but... i need a new phone NOW. actually i needed a new one 2 months ago but decided to hold strong for the SGS2... but it's come to a point where my current phone is damn near unusable, so i think i'm going to get the infuse when it launches and roll the dice on the sgs2 coming out before the remorse period ends. or failing that just give it back and wait some more for the sgs2 to release.
I think the best option for some of us is to buy the carrier branded version on contract, sell it, and use that money to get the vanilla SGS 2. After dealing with all the Captivate issues as well I'm never buying a carrier branded Android ever again.

If i was on att there would be no doubt id go with international like you said no waiting for carrier update, no carrier branding and missing hardware features.
I really wish carriers kept the design the same as the international it would be so much easier to update and to port roms

That's one point where you're crazy. The Captivate is the nicest Galaxy S and has a lot less plastic than any other one. Everyone has told me they liked the Captivate over the other Galaxy S variants. I've been very happy with the Captivate, but not as happy about the AT&T branding and waiting for their crap.
I would much rather spend the money and buy the phone unlocked than buy it from ATT.

Only issue I see with this is warranty support. If Samsung US would support a UK model fine, but if it requires international shipping that would give me pause.
What if the US version has NFC? Would that change your mind?
Yes, NFC is useless right now, but wouldn't that at least lower your resell value of the UK version whenever one else in your area has NFC?

Given the fact (I hope) all 4 major carriers are getting it, and AT&T, VZW and T-Mob are in an NFC payment system alliance , the chances of US getting NFC versions are not extremely low

I don't see NFC being that important to me right away. I am guessing by the time it becomes important to me, I will already be looking at another phone.
Also, even though the UK might not be getting the NFC version, you probably will still be able to buy a NFC version unlocked from another country.
Hate to say it... but until the iPhone gets NFC it's not worth worrying about.
Devices still need to be upgraded in stores, airlines, and what not to accept NFC no? The above poster is probably correct, the phones are going to need to be widely available before companies spend the money to upgrade their equipment.

Why, because the iPhone has the market share lead and will dictate what the market will do? No, that's Android.
If you didn't already hear, the press conference between AT&T and Samsung was not for the Galaxy S II. It was of course for the Infuse 4G. This will be the first of AT&T phones to be capable of up to 21Mbps, assuming you are in an area where the cell towers have fiber backhaul in place.
That being said, there is another press conference from Samsung(and Samsung alone, no carriers mentioned with it) that will take place May 24th. This is what people are presuming to be the Galaxy S II, and takes place exactly 11 months after the press conference for the original Galaxy S line.
Now, my question to all of you is, if you are in serious need of a phone, what do you think is the best choice to do in this situation? I have all lines available for an upgrade, starting tomorrow, as this will mark 11 months after, which makes me within 30 days of my 1 year mark of this contract, and the guy at the AT&T store said I can do the upgrade if I am within 30 days(I said that confusingly, but it made sense in my head, so I hope you all understood).
I am sitting here with a Motorola Backflip, the slowest and worst phone you could ever want. Okay not true, but I think I'd rather have a simpler phone with its own random OS that runs smoothly on it since it would be designed for it. So I want to get a new phone ASAP, but I really would like the Galaxy S II. Should I just go ahead and get the Infuse 4G since I am desperate? Or do you think it would be worth waiting for Galaxy S II? I have multiple upgrades, so I may just get the Infuse for now and still get Galaxy S II when it comes, but at that point I would have to pay for it. If I just wait for Galaxy S II, I won't have to pay, but I'd be without a good phone for a while, and it's already been long enough. I think that I may end up being fine with the Infuse, but the GSII seems so nice, I'm gonna want it anyway.
I'm kinda trying to save up my money, I get a couple hundred every two weeks, but I end up spending a lot, and a phone would cost me a whole paycheck.
Anyways what do you guys think on this whole situation, whether it's about the May 24th press conference, or what phone I should get, or whatever.
The infuse will be an afterthought. It runs 2.2... it'll have little dev support and tweaking/upgradability will be much less likely. Old hardware as well except for the screen and 4.5" is just too big imo.
Wait for the SGS2
if you look at the at&t facebook page..the 24th showcase may be for tablets..not sure if its for sg2. i have it marked down tho..but i would try out the infuse. you said you have multiple upgrades..so why not.

See which upgrade on AT&T can be sold on ebay for max $ and use that $ to buy the SGS2.
Well if I buy one, then switch to another later, I will have to give the other one up for another person in my family.

That's exactly what I did. I bought an Atrix for $99 from Best Buy and sold it on eBay for $470. I used the profit to help me pay for my new S2!
Oh, and as a bonus since I had the unlimited data plan with my old 3GS the Best Buy rep called AT&T and asked them to keep me grandfathered on that plan. I thought that was pretty cool.

As to May 24 samsung announcement,I think that gs2,will be the U.S debut, and tmo gets our phone,if look through some forums the gs2 was be coming to tmo 1st anyway,ATT GOT INFUSE,WE GET THE BIG BANG.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Actually the whole GS2 on T-mobile USA rumor started when t-mo accidentally responded to a tweet about the GS2 and they confused it for the GS 4G... they corrected themselves but the rumors had already spread.. I would love this device on T-mobile or Sprint.. but Sprint is just getting around to releasing the Nexus S 4G... not a bad phone but when it wasn't cutting edge when the original was announced last winter..
http://store.wirexgroup.com/default.aspx?page=item+detail&itemcode=SILGALAXYS2BK
For the "Samsung Galaxy S 2 Attain(at&t), Function(Verizon), and Within(Sprint)", but nothing about T-Mobile.
I suppose 1this could be 1 of many things, either T-mobile just hasn't come up with a name yet, that case is for some reason not allowed to mention the T-mobile version, the t-mobile version will be physically different, T-mobile isn't actually getting one, etc...
I wouldn't personally assume the last one, but it still makes it seem like anyone with T-mobile will be waiting the longest. It also goes to show we will probably not be getting one phone to rule them all and have to deal with different versions, then again maybe they will just each be individually branded but development can still span each one but I am not holding my breath.
I dunno, just didn't see this posted and was yelling "Noooooo!" at my laptop so I figured I would risk being an ass hat by posting this.
It's okay, I was thinking the same thing when I didn't see a post. Anyway, I think this and the postponement of the May 24th event in NYC was the last straw for me. It probably means that it'll be at least a month before any carrier gets the SGSII and I just can't wait that long. I'm probably going to get the Sensation and just find alternative apps to cover the crappy codec support if it actually has decent audio hardware.
it could just mean 3 to 6 more month before we get the Tmobile version
just like the Nexus S
Sprint took like 6 month after, before they got theirs, which was just released by the way
I'm on T-Mobile too, and I sure hope they release within the next month or so... I've been waiting since the MWC show and thought it would be sooner, but since this will be my first smart phone, so I guess patience is the word of the day.

by that time samsung will announce a new version of the phone. And then this same process starts again...!
If T-Mobile is delaying the release of the SGS2, they might as well skip it and be the first to release the SGS3.
Hopefully it just means the tmo version is slightly different and would require a different gel case. Samsung sold a **** tons of Vibrants so I hardly think tmo would skip out on this one. Does anyone know which carrier sold more sgs's? I tried searching for numbers but just keep coming up with overall sgs sales.

I hope you're right. All these recent stories about the SGSII not showing hints of a T-Mobile variant are really starting to make me wonder if all the waiting I did was for nothing.
This just makes me angry. Galaxy S 4G is getting an update to Gingerbread via Kies:
WHERE IS OUR UPDATE??????????
Do you think this update will help Vibrant development at all? Maybe Gingerbread GPS drivers can be pulled from it and work on our phone? 911 calling issue fix?
"Beginning November 15, a software update will be available for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. The update will upgrade the device to Android 2.3./Software version T959VUVKJ6.
Devices upgrading to Android 2.3./Software version T959VUVKJ6 will benefit from various improvements based on customer feedback.
Devices upgrading to T959VUVKJ6 will benefit from:
Android 2.3(Gingerbread)
Google Security Patch
Camera enhancements
Wi-Fi enhancements
Note: The upgrade to KJ6 is NOT required. You may opt out of the upgrade and continue using software version T959VUVKD1.
Important:
This upgrade will not be sent to devices Over the Air (OTA / FOTA) - Instead, you must install the upgrade by connecting your Galaxy S 4G to a PC using Samsung Kies Mini software. "
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1810
Yup. It pissed me off too when I read it. I'm hoping that we can benefit from this update. The more and more I look at it, it is starting to turn out that I might as well just pony up the cash for a SGSII.
at this point I don't care about an update, the only reason I would be interested would be to better my battery life on miui. Oh well I will my have my sgs2 next week.
Why are you guys getting sgs2 when you can clearly see the lackluster costumer support from T-Mobile. You're going to be in the same situation in a couple of months with no ics. EXACTLY what I was going to say! T-mobile smacks us Vibrant users hard, denying us gingerbread when other carriers are providing it to their Galaxy S customers, and our response is ... to buy a new, more expensive phone from T-mobile?
Not me. I would feel way too much like a $ucker. I'm not buying another phone from T-mobile. I'll go international on the SGS II or I won't go at all. And when my contract is up I'll remember how T-mobile snubbed their Vibrant customers.
To be fair Verizon is just as bad. It seems that the American mobile market is terrible compared to the international market. Say what you want about apple but at least they told the carriers to go shove a stick up their asses.

i'm getting one for $300 new and if its not up to par, I will sell it and make a profit. I want a bigger screen, the phone is fast enough for anything I'll ever do. Also there will always be something better around the corner.
If a car manufacturer sold 2011 cars that got a certain mpg, and in 2012 they sell that same exact car but they tweaked the way the car's computer was programmed so it got a better gas mileage, would the car manufacturer offer to reprogram your car's computer for free? Nope. Customers would pay more money on gas for as long as they own that car. Funny how nobody complains about free car engine computer upgrades that are available to similar cars with identical engines and computers (when it hits them in the wallet!), but we cry because our cell phones aren't upgraded to an operating system that is only available on different phones with different processors.

The Vibrant got one upgrade, from 2.1 to 2.2; if we are going to base our future expectations on the Vibrant's history, we should assume the SGSII will get one upgrade - probably to ICS.
Now back to your question: why get a SGSII? I think that for the most part people are first choosing T-Mobile, and second choosing the phones T-Mobile has to offer. For the most part the SGSII is 'better' than the Vibrant, that's why people are getting one. In a year there will be phones that are 'better' than the SGSII and people will buy those phones. That's why.

To be fair Verizon is just as bad.

ATT is bad too. Can anyone name an American carrier that is awesome at updating their phones? You can name some examples from a specific carrier, but that same carrier will have phones that they 'should have' upgraded but never did.
Guys, be patient and wait for Galaxy Nexus. You would never have to wait again )

Yup. It pissed me off too when I read it. I'm hoping that we can benefit from this update. The more and more I look at it, it is starting to turn out that I might as well just pony up the cash for a SGSII.

Buying a SGS2 On T-Mobile would be the worst mistake you could ever make. Didn't you learn a lesson from the Vibrant fiasco?
HTC and Motorola have both made statements on ICS updates. Samsung USA has not said one thing about ICS update. SGS2 on T-mobile is different from all the other variants of SGS2. SGS2 on Vibrant internals are so different that it probably requires a bunch of unique drivers not common to the other SGS2 variants. Trust me don't but the SGS2. You will be lucky to get ICS and if you do it will probably come a year from now, by that time the next version of Android will be out and Samsung will have LONG FORGOTTEN SGS2 on T-Mobile. Don't make the same mistake TWICE.

Why are you guys getting sgs2 when you can clearly see the lackluster costumer support from T-Mobile. You're going to be in the same situation in a couple of months with no ics. I hope your planning on getting the international version and not the T-Mobile version. Don't let your compulsion reward the T-Mobile execs who failed us. I don't know about you but with stable CM 7.1 eb streamline kernel and my added ffc I've got a phone that hasn't given any problems and given me all the features that I could want from any newer phone. Just my two cents, not meant to tell you what to do.

Perfectly stated!
From a chat session with t-mobile support:
Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have been connected to ~Craig M.
Me: When will the Gingerbread update for the Vibrant be available?
~Craig M:* Welcome to T-Mobile live Chat. My name is Craig and I will be happy to assist you. For your reference my Rep ID is 1320828. Please give me a moment while I open your account.
Me:* Hi Craig. Thank you
Me:* I read this article today: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1810
~Craig M:* I have read your question and will be more than happy to assist you with your request. For the protection of your account, may I have the last four digits of your social please?
Me:* ####
Me:* I would like to know when a Gingerbread update for the original Samsung Vibrant will be available.
~Craig M:* As per the article, the update will start being sent out effective November 15th, however this is for the Galaxy S 4G, which is newer than the Samsung Vibrant.
Me:* Right, I understand that.
Me:* Seeing as Vibrant owners already feel somewhat ripped off by the Galaxy S 4G, I was just wondering if the release of GB for the GS4G had led to any new information on the future release of GB for the Vibrant.
~Craig M:* Unfortunately, we do not have any information regarding an update for the Vibrant.
Me:* Lovely. Well if you could please pass along my interest to whoever you can I would greatly appreciate it. Getting awfully tired of picking up Android phones from t-mobile that never get the upgrades that were originally promised.
~Craig M:* I can certainly pass that along. Did you have any other questions that I can answer for you today?
Me:* No that's all. Thank you for your time.
if you want updates, get a Nexus.
Just that simple.
We were promised an update to Froyo. It took a bit of pressure to even have that released, but we got it. We were never promised an update to Gingerbread, so they have no obligation to give us one. And it makes no financial sense for them anyway, which is what it really comes down to. I'm not saying I like it, that's just the way it is. We will not be getting an update to Gingerbread.

You are missing a big point here. Sure, nice car analogy, but what if you have a Toyota and they don't update your gas mileage, but Ford does update a similar model car? Would you still be just as likely to buy a Toyota next time?
That's what we have here. I have a Droid X and a Vibrant (and a Galaxy S 4G for that matter). The Droid X and Vibrant came out virtually within days of each other. I've had official GB on my Droid X for months now. Vibrant will never get GB. The Droid X also had Froyo months before the Vibrant. Both phones were released with Eclair.
So, when I'm getting my next phone, I'm certainly going to factor that in. I know Motorola/Verizon will be more apt to update my phone as compared to Samsung/TMobile (personally, I put more of the blame on Samsung than TMobile, but that's debatable).

Not sure about that. Buy a Motorola/Verizon phone next time because you are more likely to get future updates and it does affect Samsung financially. I doubt that too many people will make that a big factor in their decision, but, over time, the bad reputation could start to have a deeper impact to Samsung's financials.
It all comes down to the finances. Motorola/Verizon bean counters calculated that the upgrade to GB made financial sense and Samsung/TMobile calculated that it didn't.
They're not giving us anymore updates. IMO this has been apparent for a long time. A $500 phone has pretty much become obsolete as far as TMob/Samsung are concerned. What I'm wondering is who's to blame? Did TMob drop the ball, or Samsung? Either way I'm leaving TMob, and won't be purchasing any more Samsung products. Screw 'em both. I will not spend hundreds on a new phone every year, which is exactly what they want.
Anyone interest in a Morotola, maybe take a glance and Motorola's Bootloader policy here http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2010/08/clearly-you-have-no-idea-what-efuse-is.html and here http://www.droid-developers.org/wiki/Booting_chain.
Since XDA is abound with noobs and hackers, it should be known that the EFuse chip will not let you change your bootloader or run any type of FastBoot-OEM Unlock. Just letting you know it will trip the chip and brick instantly.
I came from a Motorola that was never scheduled to get a 2.2 update and we hacked it and created our own, but took some serious time and support, none of which came from Morotola or our carrier. In fact our carrier released their "official" version of 2.2 and when we broke it down, found our code in the libs, modules,...Since open source, what could we do?
Just an fyi to anyone that is wanting to move to a Motorola (albeit the Atrix boot unlock was leaked, but as far as I know, that is the only one in the whole Mfamily).
