May 5th Samsung/AT&T Press Conference, Not For SGS2 - Galaxy S II General

If you didn't already hear, the press conference between AT&T and Samsung was not for the Galaxy S II. It was of course for the Infuse 4G. This will be the first of AT&T phones to be capable of up to 21Mbps, assuming you are in an area where the cell towers have fiber backhaul in place.
That being said, there is another press conference from Samsung(and Samsung alone, no carriers mentioned with it) that will take place May 24th. This is what people are presuming to be the Galaxy S II, and takes place exactly 11 months after the press conference for the original Galaxy S line.
Now, my question to all of you is, if you are in serious need of a phone, what do you think is the best choice to do in this situation? I have all lines available for an upgrade, starting tomorrow, as this will mark 11 months after, which makes me within 30 days of my 1 year mark of this contract, and the guy at the AT&T store said I can do the upgrade if I am within 30 days(I said that confusingly, but it made sense in my head, so I hope you all understood).
I am sitting here with a Motorola Backflip, the slowest and worst phone you could ever want. Okay not true, but I think I'd rather have a simpler phone with its own random OS that runs smoothly on it since it would be designed for it. So I want to get a new phone ASAP, but I really would like the Galaxy S II. Should I just go ahead and get the Infuse 4G since I am desperate? Or do you think it would be worth waiting for Galaxy S II? I have multiple upgrades, so I may just get the Infuse for now and still get Galaxy S II when it comes, but at that point I would have to pay for it. If I just wait for Galaxy S II, I won't have to pay, but I'd be without a good phone for a while, and it's already been long enough. I think that I may end up being fine with the Infuse, but the GSII seems so nice, I'm gonna want it anyway.
I'm kinda trying to save up my money, I get a couple hundred every two weeks, but I end up spending a lot, and a phone would cost me a whole paycheck.
Anyways what do you guys think on this whole situation, whether it's about the May 24th press conference, or what phone I should get, or whatever.

The infuse will be an afterthought. It runs 2.2... it'll have little dev support and tweaking/upgradability will be much less likely. Old hardware as well except for the screen and 4.5" is just too big imo.
Wait for the SGS2

if you look at the at&t facebook page..the 24th showcase may be for tablets..not sure if its for sg2. i have it marked down tho..but i would try out the infuse. you said you have multiple upgrades..so why not.

Yeah it's just if I wanna have to spend money or not cause if I just choose one then I personally don't have to pay anything.

See which upgrade on AT&T can be sold on ebay for max $ and use that $ to buy the SGS2.

Well if I buy one, then switch to another later, I will have to give the other one up for another person in my family.

That's exactly what I did. I bought an Atrix for $99 from Best Buy and sold it on eBay for $470. I used the profit to help me pay for my new S2!
Oh, and as a bonus since I had the unlimited data plan with my old 3GS the Best Buy rep called AT&T and asked them to keep me grandfathered on that plan. I thought that was pretty cool.

interesting
but I think they were just given a UK model to play with - in the limited shots I saw no ATT icons anywhere, no logo on the front and no physical customization to the design - all things AT&T LOVES to do and DOES in most cases

i'm starting to think you get off on being a negative nellie

As to May 24 samsung announcement,I think that gs2,will be the U.S debut, and tmo gets our phone,if look through some forums the gs2 was be coming to tmo 1st anyway,ATT GOT INFUSE,WE GET THE BIG BANG.

Actually the whole GS2 on T-mobile USA rumor started when t-mo accidentally responded to a tweet about the GS2 and they confused it for the GS 4G... they corrected themselves but the rumors had already spread.. I would love this device on T-mobile or Sprint.. but Sprint is just getting around to releasing the Nexus S 4G... not a bad phone but when it wasn't cutting edge when the original was announced last winter..

If they do, it will be missing 4G (amongst other things) until Samsung upgrades it themselves. But I think you made a good move.
I hope you enjoy the Epic more than the Evo. Im hanging onto my Evo until i get the Epic in hand and have a day or two to play with it. If all goes as expected then the Evo will be my girlfriends phone
Good choice . I have the vibrant and I love it. Good to see another sgs phone released ...

Wel luckily I was within my 3 days of buying my evo (bought it July 30th) at best buy. So I returned it and went ahead and preordered the epic too.
So I'll just have to pay the 50+ tax difference
Can't wait til Tuesday !
Congrats on making the switch! The EVO really never did it for me. Don't like the phones accent color, Sense UI, and the layout of the capacitive buttons.
The Epic shall be EPIC!!!

This is exactly what I'm doing, except I'm just getting the Epic regardless. My girl really wants the EVO so, good for me d'.'d
Speaking off best buy basically said I was only like the 5th preorder
Man is samsung or sprint screwing this launch up? I get worried because if it flops will that mean little Dev support (custom roms) or samsung official support like software updates?
Stupid doublepost.
"The Decision"
When did you decide?
I think I decided this morning. I mean, I decided this morning I went day to day. I wake up one morning, it's this device. I wake up another morning, it's this other device. And it's a process that I felt it was I may feel like this is the best opportunity for me or not the best opportunity for me.
But this morning I woke up, had a great conversation with myself. Once I had that conversation, I think I was set.
The answer to the question everybody wants to know: What's your decision?
In this fall, this is very tough, in this fall I'm going to take my talents to Samsung and get the EPIC.
Hahaha. Wonder if there will be a letter from the Company owner of the "other device" about his decision.... LOL!

Sprint is launching the phone, not Samsung. There is only so much that Samsung can do because they have 1 phone with 4 different names and 4 different sets of features on 4 carriers.
The commercials I saw advertised the "Galaxy S" phone. Unless you're a bit of an electronics/technology fan, then you won't put 2+3 together to realize that the Epic/Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate are variants of the Galaxy S.
Besides that, certain other carriers like Verizon have done a decent job at branding their smartphone line.
I pulled out my Vibrant last week to show it to someone and they asked me if it was a Droid phone. Two choices:
1. Answer "no" and take 3 minutes to explain that 'droid' is a brand name and what android is and where my phone fits in.
2. Answer "yes" and avoid boring that person with a bunch of information they won't remember anyway.
Even though this phone is nicer than the EVO, I don't see it selling very big. Sprint customers are generally with Sprint because they are cheaper than Verizon and AT&T. The $250 price and +$10 "4G" fee for having the phone will keep people away.... especially since the Captivate and Vibrant are available on AT&T and T-mobile for $50 less up front, and ~$10 less per month (in t-mobile's case).
Also, the EVO just came out about a month ago or so. Its good that Sprint is getting some nice handsets, but they are going to price themselves out of their niche if they aren't careful. I expect the Epic to drop to $199 within 2 weeks of release.... I think they are just trying to squeeze early adopters
Don't they have to wait 30 days before dropping the price? Otherwise all the "early adopters" will become 2-week adopters as they en-masse return the phone and buy it again at the lower price.

Ctia = boring

Wow, not really much going on for the 1st day imo. Nothing much on anything coming soon, like in the next few weeks.
I'm sitting on my atrix which is in its box on the fridge waiting to hear of something coming soon on att. Guess I will just return it and get my $ back.
I've been waiting for news on the sgs2 our the samsung infuse. Maybe tomorrow our wed hopefully.
What are your thoughts.

I'm also really interested in hearing about the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Samsung Infuse. Hilariously enough, I went to an AT&T store to get a new SIM for my iPhone 4 so I could give it to my mom, and I asked an employee working there who had a little Samsung badge on his belt if he knew anything about the Infuse's release date. "Samsung Infuse? Never heard of it."
I was at CTIA today. HTC guy said they were going to announce a dual core phone today...Never heard about it. Suppose it's the Pyramid. The booth guy really didn't know very much.
Did go by the Motorola booth and jokingly complain about the Skype, Fake 4G, and other things. The guys just all grinned and blamed it on AT&T.
Galaxy S II no one at the booth would say anything about when it was coming to US.
Playstation phone was nice. Got to see an Arc (from an ericsson guys pocket) it was nice but kind of meh.
All in all I agree I have sore feet and not much else to show for my efforts.
If I had been feeling particularly malicious I would have connected my phone straight to a HDMI cord sans dock and showed the Moto guys what's been done to the phone, but I didn't.
I had the best time at the Nokia booth though. People were really friendly, and down to earth. Had a grea time chatting with a booth guy that was really knowledgeable and we both decided we hope the best comes out of the WP7 deal. I tried to get him to open up about a new "Meego" type phone but he just smiled.
Tomorrow is my last day to return the Atrix and I guess I'm keeping it.
See I had to pay full 535 for it and it just rankles me that I at times feel due to the various issues I'm not getting nor will get the full moneys worth.
Buyers remorse from too much time reading forums I guess.

Me too, same dilemma. I want a SGS II SO bad, but no idea when its being released is so off-putting. i can't wait around in limbo for 2, 3, 4 months. I paid full price for my Atrix as well and am contemplating returning it or not. I'll only get $495 of the $530 i paid though back ($35 re-stocking fee). Hoping CTIA would bring me a reason to take it back, but unfortunately nothing yet.
Well I rationalize that since. I love the phone even with all its flaws I'll enjoy it as is.
Work pays for my base phone bill & data plan so it's like getting the phone for free.

AT&T-branded phone not looking good for U.S. Release

The more I read (which is entirely too much lately), the more it seems that the SG2 is going to take a long time to have an "official" release in the US. I try to put myself in the position of there possibly being two different consumers (one for the Infuse and one for the SG2). Unfortunately, I don't think there is a "need" for both devices. It really seems counterproductive for AT&T to release the SG2 so soon after the release of the Infuse.
Call me paranoid but, I would REALLY like to have a phone that isn't a gray item (for warranty). I have faith in the hardware but you never know with electronics.
Anyone have an opinion on it? I have an iP4 which is perfectly fine. I just REALLY want to get an Android device and would prefer to stay on AT&T (service locally is good, and I am on an unlimited data plan).

If your iphone is in good shape and unlocked, sell on ebay for loads of cash. Purchase a sgs2 for 700-750. Still will be able to use your unlimited plan.
But I really dont see SGS2 on ATT anytime soon.
I thought there was some big non-carrier specific announcement by Samsung in New York on May 24th or something? Honestly, the Infuse is just an oversized SGS with an overclocked CPU.
If you've seen the video demonstrations of just how powerful the SGSII is, you'll start to realize these two devices are actually worlds apart. I'm using an unbranded SGSII, but if you're holding out for AT&T's version, don't give up yet!
You cold buy a SG2 overseas but it won't work on the same 3g band as AT&T. If you are planning to stay on at&t why don't you.buy the Motorola attic. I own one and its incredibly fast.

There's an announcement planned, yes. However, it could easily be for the AT&T branded Nexus S or one of the new tablets.
To those of us who care about hardware the phones (Infuse and SG2) are definitely worlds apart. However to Joe Consumer who doesn't know or care about hardware specs, I don't think it will matter.
The wife keeps giving me the evil-eye when I mention ordering one from the UK. I think I'm wearing her down though

I've messed with an Atrix. Seemed OK. Not spectacular though. I have a friend who actually returned his for the HTC Inspire (and loves it). That doesn't speak well to me. Plus EVERYTHING I've seen about the SG2 proves it's definitely the cat's meow (currently).

It's not just about the specs, those specs translate into REAL world performance differences. The SGSII has not even had the slightest hiccup with web browsing... regardless of how many windows are open, how many graphics are in each window, etc. My SGS, while great when it came out, easily got bogged down, and multi-window browsing was never a truly usable feature. Given the Infuse is has almost identical specs to an SGS, I predict it will have similar issues.
People keep thinking these specs being listed off are only for geeks, but once in a while, they do relate to real world usability and performance differences. And when they do, they are QUITE significant.
The title of your thread almost gave me a heart attack thinking there was some type of major technical issue uncovered. My SGS2 arrives tomorrow. More appropriate title would be "AT&T-branded phone not looking good in the U.S."
I guarantee you several hundred thousand of the 3MM presales are destined for AT&T. If you poke around the technical sites, the general consensus is a 4G version for VZW followed by AT&T this year. Nobody's even mentioning Sprint or T-Mobile. Depending on the timing, the SGS2 could be AT&T's first LTE phone. I haven't seen any updates on their LTE status but I'm guessing they're pushing to get something up quickly to show the world they'll be as good as VZW in the long run.

Sorry about the startle. I changed the title of the thread.
I am just frustrated (as are many I'm sure). I'd like to offload my iP4 before the value drops too much (iP5 release). Unfortunately, I'm unable to go without a phone and I am really nervous about a gray market item. Hell even an unbranded Samsung direct phone would work for me. I'm going to have to pay full price anyhow.
Yeah, I think ATT will get the SGS2 with LTE.
Use the fuzzy math I used to convince myself the phone was only $475. $800 - $325 (sold G2) = $475 Can you really put a price on whipping your phone out and gathering a crowd around to see it for a couple of months? My take on buying an import is you spin the wheel and take your chances. If you buy it in the UK, Samsung U.S. will service it. If you buy from Expansys they'll ship it back to the UK for you for service. How long you're without a phone is probably the biggest concern. If you use a credit card with buyers and/or warranty protection you'd have a back-up that will at least get you your money back. Go ahead, you know you want to do it
The event is NOT for the Nexus S for AT&T. Otherwise it would be an event WITH AT&T, not an independent Samsung event.
Hang in there OP. I am in the same boat. I refuse to replace my iPhone 4 with a $750 phone that will be $500 through my carrier. That's $250 in my pocket. Another $250 and I can buy one for my wife
I bet the event is for sgs2 variants. Nexus s doesn't warrant a bug event just like here in Canada it came quietly on all carriers. No big announcements. Many peope don't even know it lol.
The phone is been out a month and is at&t compatible. The event is def. about something more exciting
I'm in the same boat here, too. However after my experience with the Captivate, and the shoddy quality control of its hardware, and the still-present GPS woes and color-banding issues on the SGS II, it seems Samsung rushed yet another product to market and perhaps these extra couple months we'll have to wait will be well worth it in the end.

Could be the Tab 8.9 though.
I was wondering what could be that of the SGS II that recently went through the FCC with AT&T only bands?
I hoping the announcement on the 25th will be that Samsung will sell the GS II unlocked in the states and working on AT&T's network just like Google does sell their Nexus phones.

Go to "USA May 24th announcement" thread to discuss this, I think I mentioned pricing there, or I may be wrong.
I think there is no way the phone will be more than $250 with a 2 year contract on AT&T. My opinion (based on 12 years of buying AT&T phones on 4 lines) it will be around $250, before or after $50 mail-in rebate, depending on when it is getting released. Maybe just straight forward $200 with no rebates if it is released in the fall.

No mention of Tmobile

http://store.wirexgroup.com/default.aspx?page=item+detail&itemcode=SILGALAXYS2BK
For the "Samsung Galaxy S 2 Attain(at&t), Function(Verizon), and Within(Sprint)", but nothing about T-Mobile.
I suppose 1this could be 1 of many things, either T-mobile just hasn't come up with a name yet, that case is for some reason not allowed to mention the T-mobile version, the t-mobile version will be physically different, T-mobile isn't actually getting one, etc...
I wouldn't personally assume the last one, but it still makes it seem like anyone with T-mobile will be waiting the longest. It also goes to show we will probably not be getting one phone to rule them all and have to deal with different versions, then again maybe they will just each be individually branded but development can still span each one but I am not holding my breath.
I dunno, just didn't see this posted and was yelling "Noooooo!" at my laptop so I figured I would risk being an ass hat by posting this.
It's okay, I was thinking the same thing when I didn't see a post. Anyway, I think this and the postponement of the May 24th event in NYC was the last straw for me. It probably means that it'll be at least a month before any carrier gets the SGSII and I just can't wait that long. I'm probably going to get the Sensation and just find alternative apps to cover the crappy codec support if it actually has decent audio hardware.
it could just mean 3 to 6 more month before we get the Tmobile version
just like the Nexus S
Sprint took like 6 month after, before they got theirs, which was just released by the way
I'm on T-Mobile too, and I sure hope they release within the next month or so... I've been waiting since the MWC show and thought it would be sooner, but since this will be my first smart phone, so I guess patience is the word of the day.

by that time samsung will announce a new version of the phone. And then this same process starts again...!
If T-Mobile is delaying the release of the SGS2, they might as well skip it and be the first to release the SGS3.
Hopefully it just means the tmo version is slightly different and would require a different gel case. Samsung sold a **** tons of Vibrants so I hardly think tmo would skip out on this one. Does anyone know which carrier sold more sgs's? I tried searching for numbers but just keep coming up with overall sgs sales.

Yeah but its coming out in September, much later than when the other SGSII variants are supposed to arrive on other carriers. I wish they just left it alone like what they did in the design of the Vibrant and released it during the summer.

I hope you're right. All these recent stories about the SGSII not showing hints of a T-Mobile variant are really starting to make me wonder if all the waiting I did was for nothing.

T-mobile Galaxy S2 hands-on impressions from a Vibrant user

I went to T-mobile and did a hands-on. The reviews from phone reviewers didn't quite answer my questions as a vibrant user. So I hope this helps. Plus I don't own it so I won't be justifying buyers remorse.
Bottom Line: Not worth the upgrade from a Vibrant. Especially off-contract. If you are locked into T-mobile and are upgrading anyway, it is worth it. All others should wait to see what the deal with the new Nexus phone is. You will NOT be upset with your purchase regardless though.
Screen: Huge and beautiful. Since it's not pentile, but it is larger than the Vibrant, it looks very similar. The GS2 might be SLIGHTLY less pixelated, but its not the crisp sharpness that I was hoping for.
Build Quality: What the Vibrant should've been. It's the best looking GS2 and it feels very solid. The gunmetal band is plastic as far as I can tell. It feels more solid than the Vibrant, but not nearly as much as an HTC phone. this should not be an issue whatsoever. And boy is it pretty.
Data: I live in a 42Mbps area and i speedtested about 4Mbps. The T-mobile rep said they got 8 yesterday. My vibrant got 2.6. YMMV obviously.
Speed: Quick, but with a live wallpaper and as low as 3 widgets, it started to drop in framerate. However it did NOT lag. things still load and run quickly, but not necessarily at an ideal framerate. especially the homescreen. I benched a 3200 quadrant after a memory clear. it wasn't loaded with smartbench unfortunately.
GPS: Didn't get a lock indoors of a mall (top story). 1400 meters was the closest. But I didn't get to test it outside. Grr.
Didn't get to test: Game performance, Codec Support, Sound Quality or Loudness, Camera, Camcorder, FFC.
I got my SGSII today and love it so far. The screen is beautiful, the gps worked out of the box and its fast as hell.
We'll see how I feel in a few days......
Now we just need some custom rom love
Edit: i get 13mbit/2mbit at work in minneapolis on 4G

I got my SGSII tmo too. i'm loving it XD
everything works perfectly!
im gonna have to say im loving it too!
Guys if you have both vibrant and the new SG2, please check and reply if the batteries are interchangable.
i dont think the batteries are...this one has 4 gold pins and apparently NFC built into the battery (?)...plus it looks taller.
Since I loved the Vibrant, I'm sure I'll love this phone and it's extraordinarily enticing. But to those who signed a contract with the Vibrant, 2 years isn't up yet and they would have to pay full for the phone. I didn't sign one and I paid-in-full for my Vibrant and to get the GS2, I would have to spend $530. For that, I could buy a PS3 AND Xbox 360, or a fairly nice HDTV or desktop computer, for what I consider an incremental upgrade for a phone.
It's not that I think the phone isn't worth it, its just not worth it as an upgrade from the Vibrant.
i managed to drop my vibrant in the washing machine and am looking to get a new phone starting a new 2 year contract. they didn't have the sgs2 in the store i was at today unfortunately, but i did get to mess around with the htc amaze. it seemed to be pretty dope from what i could tell from messing with it for like 5 minutes, would you guys pick the sgs 2 over the amaze? i'm a little hesitant to buy another samsung product based on the way they handled the whole gps issue on the vibrant, so i'm kind stuck here. it's either one of those or wait until they announce more details on the nexus prime... but i dont even know if that phone will come to tmobile :/

luckily there are no known issues with the SGS2 like there were for the Vibrant. Even in early reviews, the Vibrant was criticized for lag and bad GPS. It isn't the case with the SGS2, so you are good to go on that front.
As for the Nexus. It may not directly be associated with T-Mobile. However, at this point according to rumors, there should be a GSM version and it should support T-Mobile's 3G band. So the likely scenario is that you would buy the phone unlocked and then get your T-mobile account.
The issue with that is a full price phone and a full price plan. I urge everyone who wants to use T-mobile to take advantage of their off-contract pricing. That math has been done on this dozens of times, but if you buy a phone at full price and join one of their off contract plans, in two years, you will have saved hundreds of dollars. You even have the option to spread the fincancing of a [T-mobile] phone over the months. I'm sure with the nexus that you can finance with the retailer you purchased it from as well.

I just asked and checked a couple weeks ago, the previously called "loyalty program", which lets you split the hardware payment over 20 installments, is no longer available to non-contract-binding customers. Basically if you are not on contract ATM and want to utilize that financing option, you have to sign a new 2-year contract. Sux, right?
