I bought a Dell Streak last month. It was a late batch and came with the latest Android 2.2.2
Last year I also had a Dell Streak when it was first released but it had the older Android 1.6 Donut and was slow and laggy.
I sold it several months after and bought an HTC Desire followed by the Desire HD.
I recently saw advertised the Dell Streak having the latest 2.2.2 android.
I thought I'd give it a try since it came with the newer version of Android and also missed the bigger screen!
The HTC Desire HD was then sold. Though the Desire HD had far more ram and was a later phone, it did lag slightly in the menu's and even scrolling through sms messages and names/numbers it would lag, even after updating to the latest 2.3 android....
Surprisingly my new Dell streak which is running a factory stock 2.2.2 without ANY custom roms is a LOT faster than my previous DESIRE HD?
I couldn't believe how much faster 2.2.2 is compared with the older 1.6 donut, at LEAST 60% or more faster...
Amazing how the Streak has HALF the ram of the Desire HD only runs far quicker & smoother...
Going through the menu is 100% smooth, scrolling through messages and phone book is instant and smooth, I'm very happy.
Even listening to music/watching movies gives out loud & excellent crystal clear sound....
Reason I opened this forum is because some people think the Streak is old, **** & slow as it originally was due to the 1.6 donut.
Most people do not realise the boost in performance Android 2.2.2 has given to the device, making more use of the cpu & ram.
What do you guys/girls have to say about the improvements from 1.6 to 2.2.2?
I would love it even more if Dell gives us 2.3.4, with Google Video Chat
When I got mine in October, it came with 1.6, and I waited..."2.2 is just around the corner". In December, I used the QDL tool to get it to one version, then threw the 2.2 version, then when 2.2.2 came out put that on. Was working great until the last update of Lancher Pro, and it started FC, laggy etc, blew that out and put Go launcher on it. It's blazing fast now.
Hi OP:
As you said your streak is relatively new, could you tell us what rom is installed on it? (You're still on stock correct?)
It should be in Settings -> about phone and look something like:
GAUSB1A134700
If it's not could you post what version it is and what build number?

Sure.
Baseband version - GAUSB1A134700-US
VERSION - 2.2.2
Build Number - 15274
All I know is that it's a US import and yes, it's all stock.

For me it was never laggy, was just ok. However, after installing and using ADW Launcher Pro, it's made it blazingly fast, smooth & responsive for EVERYTHING.
I'm shocked it's far quicker & smoother than my previous HTC Desire HD having more ram...
My HTC Desire HD used to lag through the phone book, numbers and even scrolling through text messages used to be laggy...
I'm very happy with my streak and would not sell it for the world.
Also, EVERYONE who see's it go crazy, their eyes pop out.
People wanna know what it is, where I bought it, how much, etc...
It get's a lot of attention...
I love the looks on peoples faces when I take it out my pocket in the tube...
Oh yeah, and ONE more thing I forgot to mention.
It's the quality screen! Some reviews slag it off saying the screen is dim, bad colours/contrast, viewing angles, etc....
I agree it may not be that great in direct sunlight or viewing angles...
However, under normal viewing, or in dim/dark light I would say the Streak has one of the BEST & SHARPEST screens I have even seen on a phone...
Even better and sharper than my HTC Desire HD...
I will compare the screen later on this evening to my friends Samsung Galaxy...
Apart from the Galaxy having better viewing angles, I'm sure the Streak will look similar side by side with regards to screen quality....
Remember guys, Dell make screens, both LCD & LED screens and they make one of the best screens you can buy.
Therefore they will not make a **** screen for a phone...
Remember, my screen brightness is set permanently to 70% and it's crazy bight...
Here are some pics of how my streak looks:

Some People can't be bothered to do updates...
I got my Streak new with 1.6 which saw 5min runtime on my streak total.
Newest Baseband/Baserom 354 and Streakdroid 1.9.1 and everything is good now.
I would never sell an Android Phone because the Original Rom sucks.

Yeah, but you should really update. In some cases updates can be worse and cause other problems...
However, with the 2.2.2 update for the Dell Streak along with ADW Launcher pro makes it superfast & smooth phone.
Believe me as I used to have 1.6 Donut last year when I first bought the Streak...
It was sluggish. Even with the update to 2.1 it was slightly laggy although there was a slight improvement...
However, with the very LATEST update of 2.2.2, there is a real NOTICABLE difference...
It is now on par with every other high end phone, not really much different than an iphone 3g/4g, especially with something like ADW launcher.
Don't be lazy to update, you don't realize what your missing!
Also more compatability, some apps require android 2.1 or higher as a minimum requirement otherwise it may not work, so it's for the best.
Don't forget other improvements such as response, battery life, camera improvements, fixes, stability, etc...
I charged my Streak last night. It's been turned on since 11:00 at night...
It is now 2:51 in the afternoon, so it's been turned on almost 16 hours and the battery has dropped from 100% to just 95%
Battery life has been greatly improved too...
Do you guys think that different Streaks have different quality screens?
Meaning different batches/samples are better than others?
I do not remember the screen on my old Streak from last year.
However, I can say my new Streak has a BETTER & BRIGHTER screen than my own laptop as I compared the SAME images!
It's brighter, much more vivid/strong colours. Better contrast, better black & whites...
As I said previously I will compare my Streak later on this evening to my friends Samsung Galaxy and see if there's much of a difference and report back.
My Battery Life ist about 1% per hour in standby. But it constantly checks my gmail, Exchange email, google RSS feeds, Weather and so on.
But thats fine be my standards...my Defy (CM Nightly, SEA Kernel, undervolted) makes 2 working Days at its best...running the same apps but well its my business mobile so I use it a lot for calls.
The Blade(Swedish Spring R5) of my girlfriend makes a day....if she is lucky. Yeah...she loves the games....

That's amazing since your connected to the internet and the phone is automatically checking/exchanging emails, weather, etc...
With regards to battery, i've had upto 3-4 days use out of my Streak, 24/7 turned on.
This was with minimal use, few minutes of calls & no internet.
Standby is excellent on the phone.
My previous HTC Desire HD battery would drop like a fly when on standby with NO use at all, around 1-2% per hour!!
I have mine at 100% when I hit the sack (11pm) and in the morning it can be anywhere from 84-90% left.
I have it checking email every 30 minutes (work), weather once an hour.
On the way to work, I just top it off.
I agree..... I think later-issue Streaks do have the best non-amoled screens around..... On another note, I thought I had read every Streak review ever published, but I just found a newer in-depth, 8-page one at: http://www.kitguru.net/mobile/zardon/dell-streak-review-ferrari-red-revisited-with-froyo-2-2/

Thanks for the link. Went through the review, it scored very well indeed and I agree with the review.
There is a huge difference from 1.6 to 2.2.2...
Only one thing you might be able to suggest.
Whilst in call volume, music and movie playback is clear and loud through the loud speakers, it is somewhat weak through my ear phones.
I've tried 2 different earphones, one being very expensive and was VERY loud on my previous HTC Desire HD.
What would you suggest to get louder audio playback through earphones?
I'm currently using Playerpro. It even comes with an equalizer. Even after increasing the preamp & playing around with the equalizer, it seems to have an effect through the loudspeakers but is still too low using earphones, even at max volume is not enough.
Any suggestions for an alternative music/mp3 player or a way to incease volume, mainily for music?
This will save me buying an mp3 player just to listen to music.
Thanks.

I was just lurking in streak thread as I have always wanted this device. Currently I am using blazingly fast cm7 on my optimus one phone with gb audio effects. And I can't think of a phone now with gb audio effects. I have also asked for this dillema in another streak thread. After reading a bit, I think camera and earphone sound quality are the only two major issues with this device.
On your question, I would suggest that you should try to install dsp manager with instructions given in the relevant thread at xda.
But you should have root and also take a nandroid backup before proceeding to do this, as system might not boot if some problem / incompatibility is there. Search for dsp manager installation guide on xda.
There is one more thing, of which I am not sure as I have not tried it on froyo and may be froyo doesn't have audio effects coding and libs inbuilt. But you can take some clues from my audio effects thread op under optimus one development.
The later involves pasting soundfx folder under system/lib. Then you have to change permissions, reboot and install equalizer app from market or somewhere else.
Since the discussion is about Dell Streak 2.2.2.....
When i bought my Dell Streak5 few months back it came with 2.1 which I have upgraded to 2.2 . Quite like the dell streak 5 with its big screen, live wallpapers , ability to stop unnecessary process etc. Infact I like my Streak5 better than iphone 3gs which I had been using for 2 years..
I quite like Stage UI and would like to upgrade to 2.2.2 which has a better Stage UI. But I could hear issues from others complaining about reboots, UI being very laggy , battery loosing charge fast etc. So iam in two minds about upgrading to 2.2.2.
I also heard getting rid of StageUI to ADW would resolve most of the issues in 2.2.2. Is that true ?
Lets say if I upgrade to 2.2.2 and find lots of issues , how can i downgrade to 2.1 or 2.2 ? Does anyone know ? If yes can you let me know the steps to do it ?

I used app freeze, to freeze out the stage UI, and left it that way for a week, just to make sure it didn't screw something up, then I just uninstalled it.
There is a newer version of stage, it works, but I just don't care for the interface. Use to use Launcher Pro, but the last couple of updates were causing huge lags, Go Launcher is as smooth as silk

For those that remember, I dropped my streak cracking the screen. o2 gave me a new one - I shall be far more careful in the future.
Anyways I just upgraded to the 2.1, and prior to this (on 1.6) I liked the phone (but didn't love it as I did my HTC Desire and HD2).
However, with the new firmware, the phone is a million times better. The live wall paper looks amazing on the 5" screen, there is a really cool one with various music visualizations. What is even more impressive is the live wallpaper can be tilted up and down, its 3D!
The phone is a lot snappier and more responsive. There is definitely less lag when switching screens or opening programs.
The new dialer and gallery programs look a lot nicer. To be honest the dialer on 1.6 was really depressing.
BUT
The deal maker for me - The camera is infinitely better. There is no longer any shutter lag (which plagued the 1.6) and photos in dark conditions are better, and whilst the 720p video won't rival a sony handcam it is a massive improvement.
All in all very impressed. This should keep me going till the desire HD comes out!
a positive 2.1 review. im really hoping i will be able to get 2.1 on my US streak because i think thats what will make the phone for me.
what fps u gettin with 720p ... some ppl are sayin like 8fps ... ?
The camcorder captures above 8fps, but its certainly not 25/30fps. I would estimate 18fps.
Here is a video I took earlier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPAoNRcaMPY&feature=channel
It's far better than 1.6 but the keyboard is REALLY horrible, very slow and no numpad and I make far more mistakes than the previous keyboard...
i thought it was supposed to be 24fps. which i think is rediculously slow but what do you expect, its a phone.

I've noticed with it that the fps jumps about a bit but cant really complain as this 2.1 build does feel like a beta so.
The final 2.1 may be 24fps who knows but it is an improvement whatever fps it is

you dont need to estimate.. you can get the info from inside the camera app.
i bet it will depend on room lighting. if you have 2.1, try in high light and low light. also try with lower video resolutions.
Anyone else think that 2.1 has made sound louder when playing music and videos Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
15fps on the cam apparently....damm
Well ever since i got my streak on release date i've loved it
Had been waiting on 2.1 as i knew this would make the phone even better and oh boy it's really amazing.
The live wallpapers, currently using beautiful widgets live wallpaper n it's a real eyecatcher for all my mates, so much so 2 mates r upgrading to it.
I've only got one problem in that i couldn't wait to get flash.... bbc iplayer full site on my streak...heaven... n here is the problem.. can i get flash 10.1 to download..nope.. really frustrating as it would be great.
if u like big phones then this is the phone for u, u'll not be dissapointed.
But if someone can help with the flash prob then pleeeeaassee let me know
Ev vern if you can download flash you won't get it to work as it designed to work on 2.2. Some one has tried this.
I am also looking forward to getting flash.....just wish dell would hurry up

Ok, aside from the bootloop issue upon install, I have to say so far, not bad. The blur aspect is definitely better, however I dont care for it any more now than I did before. The color scheme is quite visually appealing. Very much like lucid steel theme for fission. I would prefer the scheme from the fission gb theme but this is absolutely an improvement over the stock froyo appearance.
Overall system speed seems to be somewhat improved, and there is a big issue w/ launcher pro which sucks. with launcher pro there is some heavy lag in transitions and the general feel of the phone is kind of clunky and choppy. Without launcherpro, phone tends to run quite smooth. no status bar controls kinda sucks, and the reduced screen density w/o launcher pro is also kind of a downer, but overall im not going to complain. Its definitely progress.
One big downside I noticed after 2 days is battery life is very hit or miss. On fission 2.6.1, i was making it easily 1.5-2 days on a single charge. Yesterday I made it home with 40% left, today I was at 10% when i left work. I can attribute this heavily to Blur, but this is definatley somethign that a new fission or UD build should fix
I have to say that since the devs seemed to have abandoned the Fission project, I haven't looked back since upgrading to GB Blur. it's snappy and attractive and while it still has alot of the blur bloat i hate, root + ti backup makes things a little more manageable.
so far, i've managed to remove teh global unplug, task manager, the blur text messenger, backup asssistant and city id. my battery life is probably slightly better than it was on fission, depending on what i'm doing (games seem to destroy it).
we still have to recognize that this IS a leaked version and there are still some misses with the build. data services randomly failing, inability to make calls/send texts and the weird keyboard backlight issue. other than that, i've been pretty pleased.
I just upgraded yesterday and I am very happy with it

Seems he indicated he was looking at it, but made no promises of an updated ROM on teamdefuse's website, twitter, or this forum...
Did you see something else where he said he was specifically working on GB Fission?
I think GB for the D2 makes some major improvements, but I can't give up liberty for it. Just have to wait and see if Liberty GB comes out.

yeah i thought that topic came up when the sdk was made available, but nothing ever really came to light. i feel like after p3droid's recent tweets/posts, etc., the landscape has been drying up.
I got the impression from what p3 said that the devs were under some fire as google seems to be having second thoughts about open source, as well as unpaid tethering raising some eyebrows with teh carriers, which is understandable.
Hopefully once things get ironed out we'll see some ovens refire and some cool stuff gettin rolled out.
I'm still kind of split and definitely agree that gaming on gb is a battery killer in a huge way. Overall battery life is good, however i've had a few days where it just sucked down. Ive been off charge since 6am, 12 hours later with minimal-moderate useage i'm at 70%, however there have been days where I have used the phone way less and been getting charge warnings by 2pm.
Hopefully the official release will solve the rest of these issues.
All I can say is that I hope some custom ROMs are available for Droid 2 Gingerbread soon, because what I have now is buggy to the point of being frustrating. Besides being a memory hog, I sometimes lose my data connection for no apparent reason and my keyboard backlight doesn't always work. Also, even when I do have a data connection, my phone has problems loading web pages much of the time.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the screen sometimes randomly shuts off without warning.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
if you have an issue with the screen randomly shutting off try unchecked the in pocket detection setting. I found this was way to sensitive and would consistently shut my screen off in dimly lit areas.
yeah, battery life has become sketchy, like one day i'll make it through the day with 60% left with moderate useage, similar useage next day i'll be charging by noon. USB reboots have reared their ugly head in the last 48 hours to the point where im charging off of the wall outlet and seriously considering sbfing back to fission 2.6.1
To this point I haven't had any major problems whatsoever ...
Only thing is browser sometimes crashes ...batt life is amazing!
9hr shift on work barely drops to 70% with wifi always turned on moderate txt n web

SIgh WTF getting whitescreen ....cant get back to CWMR, tried every thing....wtf ..... is this bootlooping? NO MATTER WHAT I do can not get back into recovery.
I have a trick to acces any files but most of them seem corrupted? Im only guesing as there is now a "?" by the file icon.
I tried loading bootsrap recovery
phone appeared bricked. rebooted and again cannot get into recovery.
I laready had 2.3 rom ...did I miss something? IM usually pretty good on this stuff. Modded my hd2 and rooted my g2x no issues....what dee hell is dis sheot
(mods move if I am posting in wrong section)
SOB me having bad day...lol...just realised this is the dev thread not general...I suck .....POINTS!!!!!
EDIT:
AH HA!!!! I was able to get to CWMR by an interesting method! I had previusly DL mini task manager(took it off the market for some reason) and thats THE ONLY ap that was working!
so anyways in the info bar at top it was showing mini task coming up .... Somehow it was acting as a backup! (has any one else experienced this?) so I long tapped on bootstrap rec icon and voila! it asked if I wanted to go into bootstrap and of course I did and .....yes!!! thank you cwm i got to the recovery green screen!!
FIrst I tried Tpro recovery....would not work....tried loading bootstrapzip....nothing...so....I figure since all my shizzle is backed up through my google act I did a factory reset, wipe data, and redid the new GB hack.
VOILA! it loaded ! no bootloop! just had to re-register phone and accounts!
so I leave you with this narcissistic picture of myself....

Hey everyone,
I've been running GB and ZS for about a week now. The one thing that I noticed was that there isn't anywhere where you can turn off mobile data? Maybe I'm blind, but it's not in wireless and networks? Any ideas? If not, oh well. I still think I found something in GB that's keeping me from going back to 2.2. It's just as stable as 2.2 only faster! Anyways, cheers all!

Of course its there. Lol. Didn't even think of that. A nice thanks coming your way!
I am coming from almost 1 year use of X10a and even tried Galaxy SII after a week with Arc and sold SII mainly because I hated AMOLED colors and Samsung design and UI.
When I first got Misty Silver Arc (flashed LT15a) into my hands I was excited as the phone looked simply stunning. Felt great in hand.

Now, after two weeks of use I have very mixed feeling and I am already trying to look for what is out there that looks good and performs like GSII. Atrix? Not sure!!
Pros:
1. Screen
2. Looks (design) & Feel.
3. Gingerbread
4. SE UI
5. Camera
Cons:
1. Phone starts to lag once you install some widgets, and install basic apps. I am almost seeing very minimal gain from my X10 in performance once I install my standard apps/widgets.
2. Camera button is a joke. It's almost impossible to use without shaking the phone too much.
3. Too long. They could have tried and eliminated all that black area that has Sony Ericsson Logo.
4. The battery cover starts to feel squeaky in the middle area towards the side that has volume rockers. I had to put small tape inside to stop that feeling.
I might have to root and remove some pre-installed crap and see how the phone performs. Else, I am seriously thinking to sell the phone and maybe wait for something or go back to SGII and live with it's ugliness and fake colors on AMOLED. I just will have to wait for a good ROM for it as I couldn't stand the Samsung interface. It makes Android feel like their feature phone. I am also going to try and play with Atrix and compared it to arc. If the performance on Atrix is good, I might just get it as the phone feels solid and it at least looks better than GSII.
It amazes me how SE sc*$#s up with every phone in someway and I still end up owning them. With X10 it's the OS version and with Arc, lousy hardware specs. They should at least have provided more memory. I have a feeling they never tested Arc by installing any apps and widgets.
Apps/widgets I have installed - Go Contacts, Go Contacts Themes, Go SMS Pro, Go SMS Themes, Beautiful Widgets, Beautiful Widgets Animation, beautiful widgets themes, Widgetsoid, life.contacts, Amazon MP3, Amazon Appstore, Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio, Fruit Ninja, Swype, Astro, ESPNCricInfo, Business Calendar, Just Pictures, Yahoo Mail, Tripit, Opera Mini, Twitter, xda premium, and Yelp.
What I mean by Laggy?
I don't mean it's so slow to get annoying. It only felt laggy compared to what I experienced with GSII. It's not annoying but at times I find it annoying when the dialer takes almost couple of seconds to load or my SMS shows blank blue screen for almost 4-6 seconds. At that time, if I restart my phone it performs better. I stopped using Live wallpapers hoping it will help phone perform better. I remember the performance was not like this when i played with the stock ROM. I am not sure if playing with whatsapp screw'd up something. I will try to reflash and see how it behaves.
Update1: I re-flashed my Arc and it now works blazing fast. In the next few weeks I will try to find if any particular app I used caused the issue or it's just a limitation with Arc if you have several apps/widgets installed with over 300 contacts and lost of them with high quality photo image linked through SE UI instead of picking low quality one from GMail.
Update2: I installed most of my commonly used apps and I see no lag now. I suspect having three weather apps might have some cause for the lag before as they were alway setup to get weather updated. I used Beautiful Weather, Go Weather, and WeatherBug Elite. I had Beautiful weather setup to have animation on unlock too. Or it just could be one of the other apps which I am used to download everyday from amazon appstore.
I'm not sure I know what you mean by "laggy"? I've got 8 or 9 widgets on my homescreen, phone still runs like it did out of the box. It's incredibly fast, I've had uptimes longer than you've owned the phone, and most of all, it works very well as a phone. The phone has 512MB of RAM, which means it runs smoothly and there's rarely any lag unless you're doing too many things in the background.
As for the battery door problem, my only comment is "I don't know what you're talking about." Camera button? Works fine for me, and I have a silicone shell over the button. If you're going to complain about a button, I'd recommend the awful power button. It's my biggest complaint about the phone.
Definitely agree on the creaky battery cover. Really detracts from the overall feel of the phone.

I updated my initial post to explain what I mean by laggy.
I don't mean it's so slow to get annoying. It only felt laggy compared to what I experienced with GSII. At times, I find it gets annoying when the dialer takes almost couple of seconds to load or SMS shows blank blue screen for almost 4-6 seconds. At that time, if I restart my phone it performs better. I stopped using Live wallpapers hoping it will help phone perform better. I remember the performance was not like this when i played with the stock ROM. I am not sure if playing with whatsapp screw'd up something. I will try to reflash and see how it behaves.
I happen to own a LG Optimus 2x as well, if you want a phone fast like hell, just grab that one. Still I using my arc more as I love the design and colours better than on the LG.
After I deleted all the crap I don't use using titanium backup my Arc doesn't feel that laggy anymore, try that too....but still...the LG is faster...
Further on I do think both are great phones, but I wish there were more devs in the Arc section. At the LG section there are very good roms available. I know I shouldn't complain when I am unable to make something myself, but I just miss some nice roms I can try on my Arc.
Before getting another phone, just search here on the forum for complaints, I think in every section at XDA on every phone you will find some cons. It's just to decide which con is important for you...

I hate the small power button as well. But since I use Widgetsoid and there is Lock Screen option, I never had to use the button (except to reboot, which I seldom do).

Agreed.
Power button and camera button could have been better.
You can use the same widget to reboot as well if you are rooted.
I use the screenoff software which gives you some kind of effects when switching off

I am aware of that but I am afraid that I may accidentally hit the option, causing my phone to reboot when I had no intention to do so.
I have 9 screens & 21 widgets & phone is as fast as it was out of box.. Rooted & removed crap apps though I can't compare it with SGS2 as i don't own it, but SGS2 ca be faster (due to memory & dua core) but Arc is not laggy
There is a "what can we remove" thread here. It's a good start but there can also be other reasons for laggyness.
Removing programs you don't use and clear unused programs data and killing non-active tasks can speedup you phone, sometimes
I haven't had such "lag" issues.
Maybe you removed something that affected phone aswell.
I come from an iphone 4 and sometimes i found the phone a bit laggy but overall it's a great phone and i love the screen so much ! And i'm glad to finally haver something that note everybody have.

Sorry double post
I just re-flashed the stock ROM and the phone flies. I am going to first root it and remove lot of crap I don't need and then install one app a day to see which one made things 'a little' laggy.
I also suspect if having high quality images for contacts might be the culprit. I remember I had that problem with X10. If SE is scaling down the resolution when it crops, that shouldn't be a problem.
Could it be possible that you are using a slow SD card? I use a class 6 16GB and dont have too much of a lag.

Very unlikely to be the cause. Class of an SD card really only affects how fast you can write to it, read speeds are generally extremely fast regardless of class.
Alright, so in the last few days I've been complementing whether or not I should give cm9 another try (I tried it on alpha0, but too buggy). I'm aware of the bugs such as "The ringing of death" and others. Most of you are probably wondering "Why don't I just flash it now and see for myself?" While I am considering that, I'm not one that likes to flash things since it takes me time to get everything set up the way I wanted. I figured this way I'd save some trouble and also give others the chance to see whether or not the majority of users here enjoy it.
I've broken it down into reasons why I do and don't want to flash it.
Reasons why I do:
New apps compatible with ICS
The latest android version (along with its features)
Makes my phone feel new
Reasons why I don't:
Battery life (I just need it to last the day)
Video Playback artifacts (how frequent is this?)
Less features than CM7
So I made a poll to see whether or not I should go through with it, and to help those that are complementing the same thing.
Edit: Just realized in the poll I put "No" for the last answer. Meant to put "Neither" lol.
Honestly this poll is kind of a bash to the devs that put so much time and effort to bringing cm9 to our phone so yes its worth it.

Sorry if that's what it appears, but that wasn't my intention. CM9 is great, I respect the devs, and I can't wait to see its potential. I'm just not sure whether I want to flash it only because of issues ICS (not cm9) has. For example, battery life. Battery life on ICS in general is bad, but my question in that aspect is "HOW bad?". I've seen many mixed results with some awful battery life, some decent, etc. I just want to save people the trouble, and myself, of having to flash a ROM they're not sure is right for them just yet.

I know where you coming from but you need to remember its an alpha and everything isn't suppose to be fully functional yet although most things are. Consider it more like public bug testing. I need full functionality for business everyday so honestly I know not to try these builds during the week when I expect my phones features to be fully operational.

I know and I'm completely aware of what you're saying. I know it's an alpha, and I know there are bugs. I'm just wondering if the majority of users think I should use the alpha as a daily driver or just wait. That's really the issue. Whether I should just wait or not.
Video playback tearing and artifacts in recording can be a pain sometimes. I've noticed in youtube there's barely any tearing in HQ but the same can't be said for the built in video player (even HD videos tear). Call quality has improved with the recent changes but is still far from perfect. Battery life (for me anyway) has been just fine. I hardly ever get the "ring of death" but I've found it's not difficult or impossible to work around without having to reboot. Features are still missing but that will come as cm itself updates for cm9. Peformance and stability (again for me anyway) has been just fine and it seems to handle 3D graphics better than any rom I've ever used. Overall I've been able to deal with it being my daily driver and just waiting for updates. Of course I'm going to hope for certain things to come in due time but I'm overall more satisfied with cm9 than I was with cm7. If there's anything else specific you wanted to know that I didn't cover, ask.

Thanks this is exactly the kind of response I was looking for. I rarely use video recording so that's not an issue for me. The biggest thing was the battery life and I think I've decided to wait until alpha4, because I'll definitely flash when the "Ring of Death" is fixed. I make quite a lot of calls, and even though people rarely get it, I'd rather not have to deal with that. Once again, thanks for your response.
Just a question since I'm curious: What CM features have been implemented so far in CM9?
Pssh if you use an alternative kernel and uv like a son of a ...then battery life is decent, I usually pulled 8 hours with 3 hours of display and 2 hours of music note the screen time on was heavy it would be on 20 or 30 minutes at a time.....
On my 3500 I get 6 and a half display and 13 hours overall.. I did 22 hours with just 6 flat.
Just do it I have cm7 miui and tw nandroids and haven't gone back because I love this ROM so much, there are some tips to get things rolling and so forth... so be prepared to make modifications.
Id be happy to let you know how I have my phone setup to my liking and hopefully make this transition easy for ya

Thanks so much. I guess I'll do it over the weekend (Don't wanna get TOO distracted when I have homework haha). On a normal day, I just keep my phone on airplane mode during school, listen to music for about 2 hours, and then use my phone for half an hour before putting it on its charger when I get home. That usually brings it down to 60-70% depending on what I'm doing. If you have any battery tips, I'd be glad to hear some. (Other than the obvious ones, like lower brightness and stuff). Lastly, what is the "Ring of Death" exactly like? If I were on the phone with someone, would it be so annoying that they would be distracted by it? Just curious.
Edit: Forgot to mention...is restoring apps (and their data) via TB okay to do? I read in the blog that it's not recommended and to have a fresh start, but there's a few games and other apps where I would like to keep my data.
I have used it as a daily rom since alpha 0. On completely stock CM9 and i get 10-15 hours on a OEM battery. I have been blessed and haven't had any video issues ( i take a lot of videos of my 8 month old daughter).
Def. Not up to par with CM7 but with features and battery life but it's only in alpha. I enjoy seeing and appreciating the changes when updates come out. Also saying my Epic has ICS and yours doesn't is fun lol. My co-workers are begging me to completely redo their Epic. (never will happen, none of then know what the term root or odin mean).
Honestly my suggestion flash CM9 with stock kernel and see if you can make it a week or 2. If you can't then see if a 3rd party kernel will please your needs. Then after that if you feel you can't stand the interesting bugs then take the time and go back to CM7.

Honestly, I have never had the "Ring of Death". I haven't had really any bugs on mine. This, in my opinion, is the most stable alpha rom I've ran.
And yes TB works fine. That's how I restore apps w/ data.

Id start just turning off data that will save you a lot and you'll still be able to snext -sneak texting ftw
Don't use any third party apps for "battery saving" they don't work properly and drain more than anything. Keep your running processes low I only have settings and the keyboard running normally when you pull up running processes. Don't sync email manual push for notifications.
Use the dalvik heap tweaks to keep ram available and less battery use, disable touch sounds and lock sounds to keep from audio out from wakelocking. Forgot to mention my screen wasn't at the lowest % it was at least 30 or 40%.

Ya it works....BUT the CM team is not recommending it right now if you wish to avoid random issues.

backup ur rom and go for it. battry life on cm7 is not that muchbetter, imho. u could always tweak the settings or even use samurai kernel, and undervolt to maximize battery life. there is also numerous governors with thatand the stock kernel ghat u can playwith. its truly an awesome build. these devs have done some truly amazing work. if ur not convinced, restore ur backup

Ha this thread/poll does not bash devs. They work on CM9 for themselves, the prestige and the challenge of doing it too. They'd just use this as motivation. This is a good question. Anyways - I'm on cm9 now and am enjoying it more than I expected too. Battery life does not seem to last as long but I still get through the day. alpha3 seemed to work out some of the more annoying bugs (for me), like fixing the speakerphone.
Honestly, I'd make a backup in clockwork and then flash. Worst that happens you restore the backup.

Dear all,
I am a somewhat half-way happy owner of a new Samsung Galaxy S3. As an upgrade from the iPhone 4, I was welcomed to an open eco-system where could customize the user interface in a way that suited me perfectly. I love the way that apps integrate into the OS – the gallery and sending images through whatsapp, Line, and other photo editing apps is amazingly great. I currently use the stock JB4.1.1 firmware and I am rooted in order to quarantine bloatware. I use the premium version of Nova launcher. First impressions by this point are very good!
Now to the bad: Whether it is just my experience or not, this phone just doesn’t seem to be able to handle some of the most simple user case scenarios.
Take this example:
I am working, listening to music at the office and doing occasional browsing. But sometimes I need to be on the move to see clients in faraway locations. So I get up off my butt and get to the car, switch on the GPS and blue tooth and set it to my car stereo. By this point, I am trying to input an address while the phone is heating up, lagging like crazy and generally unresponsive. The music is jittering and the phone itself becomes unusable. I then have to restart the phone to return it to a usable state.
This occurs pretty frequently, not just in this user case, but sometimes doing the simplest of tasks: Music>switch to browsing>youtube video>back to browsing>change track>whatsapp>send photo>facebok: *bam phone starts lagging*.
This phone is inconsistent. Sometimes it works smooth as ever. When it does I’m smiling and I’m absolutely delighted. The large screen is so great. But quite frequently the phone is far less reliable than my old iPhone 4. Even that handset could handle GPS, music and browsing just fine. Perhaps it’s the way iOS handles multitasking? I am relatively tech savy and am aware of iOS multitasking not being “true multitasking” but in honestly, it just works. Particularly with the Tomtom app.
I am not here to bash the Samsung GS3, I’m just here to share my user experience with the hope that someone here can provide some advice on how to better optimize the system. I’ve spent many days and nights trying to love this thing: constantly making efforts to optimize this phone. It’s a process I much enjoy and I sincerely love the customizability, flexibility of the OS. In truth, if it worked as well as it does when it does work, it is far superior to iOS. But the fact that the experience frequent lags and has reliability issues, I honestly am starting to feel the itch to sacrifice that extra power for that reliability I had become used to in iOS. Yes it’s less powerful, yes apps don’t integrate well into the OS, but hey – it works all the time. All the time I’ve spent wasting trying to optimize the phone (as fun as it can be), is starting to fade in its appeal when I actually want to use this thing.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to how best to optimize this system? I’ve rooted this thing and have quarantined all the bloatware. I’ve yet to try roms. I’m waiting for my mini-sd card to arrive so I can backup all my stuff there then try “slimbean” and some stripped down versions of jellybean. But is my user case common among other GS3 users using stock roms? Is there something wrong with my phone? Or is there something I can do to enhance my experience?
Cheers and thanks in advance for your kind input!

The possibilities are endless with root .I have my phone dialed in too preform flawlessly and find no lag at all .I have had 10 to fifteen thing open and exsperiance no lag.well good luck with this issue..

Remove icon labels from the homescreen using nova launcher and it reduces lag, have no idea what that means as I don't use nova launcher and don't have any lagg with touchwiz.
I found this answer using a simple search on google
Edit: Try apex or prime launcher (found that out too)
SGSIII is known to have problems with multitasking. Try using the mod below if you want to keep using stock based ROMs.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1888081&highlight=multitasking
The GS3 does indeed have multitasking issues. And it does bother me, hence why I'm buying the nexus 4.
I mean, really? 1GB of ram on a top notch device from Samsung?
But then again, my GS2 didn't have multitasking issus like S3, even though it only had 768mb of ram.
If you want to customize your device further, there is an sweet app called Gemini, where you can choose which app to startup and when it should autostart.

Is software issues.
Backup and flash latest firmware.
Make sure you always have more than 2gb free in internal memory.

This post got me interested since it comes from an unbiased user experience. So, here's what i did, i tried your experiences on my S3. I didn't experience any of the lag you are experiencing. I don't use whatsapp so i replaced it with skype and for satnav i tried navigation with google maps for an online test and TMN Drive (free offline maps to my country) which is based on NDrive. I also use exDialer and handcent to replace basic phone functions (calls and sms) but i kept stock browser.
I do notice my phone heating up a bit, nothing too special. This is normal and expected and only happens when i do heavy stuff. satnav = gps with maps streaming from a data connection heats it up a bit. Any game will also do it. Surprisingly, videos won't, and this includes browsing flash stuff.
Mine is an international i9300, running stock ICS, rooted. I'm also using Go launcher, since it's the only launcher yet that solves the constant launcher redrawing issues when multitasking. Although i'm rooted, i didn't make a single effort in debloating anything (it's just samsung stuff, don't have anything carrier related). By the way, Nova was just as bad as stock's touchwiz in that matter. Go is actually better in several other things so i'm not going back.
I've seen plenty of people saying poor stuff about stock's jellybean roms so i'm yet to jump on boat. It's not even available in my area too (not that would prevent anything), but it's working great + poor opinions all around so i'm keeping iCS for the time being.
To be honest, the only time i did have problems that would make me reboot my phone was when i tried a VERY buggy app once (not phone's fault since it even needed root to run) and the first week i had it because i got a faulty unit which got replaced. Ever since, i can't say i feel any of these issues and, like you, i'm a heavy multitasking user with a somewhat customized phone.
Since you're posting this, i believe you're still willing to push an extra effort to make that work so this is what i'd do: i'd try to make it similiar to mine, since mine works: Replace your launcher for Go launcher (it's totally free, no premium paid extra stuff) and even downgrade to ICS. If that doesn't fix it you may have a faulty unit like i had and that could be grounds to having it replaced for a new one.
Good luck with that and please ask me if you want me to run any more tests on mine, i'll gladly test whatever, so you know what results to expect from your phone.
Hey guys! I I am well impressed with the quick feedback I've received here! When I get my microsd card and begin experimenting with different roms, I will update my impressions. If there is no benefit though I will likely feel obliged to sell his thing.
So far I manage to make this thing usable by closing all apps before I open anything heavy handed like gps or a graphics intense game.
Thanks and keep the suggestions coming if you have any ideas. I appreciate it a lot.
Cheers

That was an amazing reply. I'll be back on here frequently and checking, but I will make a longer post again when I re-flash and experiment with other roms. I'll let you know how it goes and it would be great to benchmark against your own experience. But it's interesting you note go-launcher as the way to go. It was something I used almost right out of the box simply because it was so flexible. Looked elegant and had huge customization options. I especially liked its inbuilt search feature in the app drawer. I did read more about it however, and found that folks experienced lag. I too felt this and after researching a bit I replaced it with nova-launcher.Thing immediately "felt" more snappy, albeit my aforementioned issues above. The consensus seems to be that nova-launcher is good, with folks on the play store as well as on these forums vouching for it. It some cases I find nova launcher is the default used in certain popular custom roms. I'll take your advice though and will experiment more when I get my microsd.
My phone is the GS3 international version, quad core with 1gb ram.
The issue I think is the jellybean firmware. When I was on ics I had no issues whatsoever but now on the latest jellybean I get some lag, especially after viewing heavy pages on dolphin browser.

I think the problem with your handset is the Jelly Bean 4.1.1 update. It is well know that JB doesn't have a really good Memory management, hell, the code is all broke at the sources and the phone will work at around 70~75% of its potencial.
I suggest you should try one of the ICS Stock ROMS, remove all the bloatware and then try... I bet you won't regret it.
Why am I saying this? Well, I was having almost the same issues as you in JB, the phone was overheating and lagging even more than my wife's DEFY lol, so i wiped the phone, flashed ICS and now is all good... I can even Play Dead Trigger, listen to music and chat through whatsapp and any of the apps will lag or close like in JB...
You should give it a try to ICS
does your lagging relates to heavy data usage through 3g/wifi?
To my knowledge, I am not downloading a lot of stuff. At least nothing beyond that which is considered normal.

That sounds like a very plausible reason! I will try this asap! :good:
i think the touch wiz thingy needs loads of ram which leaves less room for other stuff , CM 10 is a nice rom bit buggy with camera but makes phone really fast and has no lags =]

I am pretty sure that your experience is not something I would consider as normal for gs3. I have tried what you had suggested and it seems to work fine. There is no lag and music is playing well. Phone is not overheating.
As I type : I have navigation activated, XDA app, Chrome Browser, Music playing in the back ground.
My set up is Rooted Stock DLJ4 JB ROM with FULL bloat ware activated and apex launcher.
Here are my suggestions.
1) Try chrome or Non stock browser.
2) Check your set up and Micro SD card, format of needed particularly if the music is stored on the card
3) Try a basic DLJ4 stock ROM or if you want only a rooted one there is one available which is only rooted stock ROM. In my view this talk about de-bloating is over rated and stock ROM works just as well.
4) Please do format your phone and start fresh and also format your SD card or consider changing it.
As for going back to iOS, do feel free to do so, but I bet that you will be back to using the Android in a couple of weeks

I have been using cm10 with no real problems quite a while. NFC has been back and forth, other than that I'd recommend it over any other roms

Hehe, I really don't want to go back to iOS. If I can get this to work as you guys have made it out to work, then this thing turds all over iOS for breakfast. But as I said, if these reliability issues persist - it's not a good look for android whether the experience is unique me or not.
