Using an unbranded unlocked SGSII. All the carrier branded ones are irrelevant for me now.

Yes irrelevant even for me ... But there a lot folks who buy from carriers due to discounted prices on handset.

You cannot use unbranded devices on VZW. And if you want good service in the US you need VZW (I know, subjective to location, but it is a fact that VZW has the best spectrum almost everywhere).
I have been using unbranded devices for a long time on ATT but will switch to VZW when the QWERTY samsung comes out.
If you think about it though, if you have service for 2+ years and dont sign a contract you have just lost a lot of money. I should have bought an iphone, jailbroken it and sold it for at or above retail . Even if you end up leaving and paying etf you still break even or make $$ if the etf is prorated..

Im on AT&T like everyone else in this post.
Looks like GS2 made it here 1st

And if you travel outside the US at all, you want GSM/UMTS and that means AT&T.
That's not counting the few hybrid "world phones" that VZW carries, which the CDMA(LTE?) SGS2 won't be.

Very true. I have used AT&T phones (Iphone 3Gs and I897) in Korea, Japan, Haiti, Iraq, Kuwait, Germany, Ireland. Although it is quite expensive for international data/ voice, text is not too bad for a few messages until you can find a wifi connection.
Bricked my Captivate, so now running GS2 in Iraq with local sim. Data works with AT&T APN but too expensive. So for now only wifi connection. Found a great use for my Iphone.....Alarmclock!!

The true end of the G1 and MT3G????

Since at&t is buying out T-Mobile, just Google it I'm not posting links, is this the true end of our phones because at&t said all 3G phones will need to be upgraded to support their towers and speed they will provide. In addition what are everyone's thoughts on the matter?? It seems like we'll all min the USA have to buy new phones BC they probably wont do the upgrade for free xD
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
You don't have to change anything unless ATT drops 2G.
I don't think it will be the end of our phones the 3G upgrades may come over the air or we may have to go old school & actually have to get firmware upgrades in the shop. I don't really think T-Mobile is much slower than At&t, after all, T-Mobile pushed the GSM network in the US, which made everyone else play catch up, since GSM was already in the EU for several years prior. Anyway, as long as we have XDA & the great people giving us Froyo & Gingerbread for our G1/Dreams & MT3G(which we were never meant to have in the 1st place), we will never be too far behind...I hope.
Just my 2 cents...
AT&T motto: If you can't beat `em, buy `em!
Its not necessarily a software issue because At&t said that themselves that all 3G phones will eventually have to be replaced to handle the new network.. AKA moving everyone to 4G and more expensive plans lol..
If they're going to pay for the upgrades themselves im all fine and for it bring on the new phones for development, and they keep our plans i will be extremely happy!
But if we have to get new phones and new contracts a lot of people will probably drop them. I know i cant get the deal i have now ANY where else for as keep.. Unlimited data, texts and 750 shared mins bt two phones for 100 bucks a month. not bad in my opinion.
3g phones are supposed to fail. Get a 4g phone. I heard T-Mobile customers will get iPhones somewhere but wouldn't count on that coming to pass. I'll get the pyramid if it hits T-Mobile in may like reported by T-Mobile news. Just ride the train and see what happens. If u get robbed bail out. My 2¢ anyway

Read unofficial t-mo news. Front page. Great info and perspective there. U might be able to get a new phone now and run the contract out before it affects u. I'm getting the HTC pyramid and riding this out regardless

I wet into a AT&T store today and there data line for "unlimited" is $45 a month with out tethering it was around $65-$70 with tethering (guys at the store were as helpfull as a bricked phone and didnt tell me much), (i currently pay $40 with tethering) ontop of your standared plans... to get a plan like yours (also mine) would cost us around $150 or more, im just hopin that we will be able to keep our plans how we have them due to the "grandfathering" law, not sure if it is covered from a buy out though...
Something for us all to look into i guess and see what we come up with
I got a feeling that the govt isn't going to allow it. There seems to be a lot of media attention lately as to how it will hurt consumers. Mergers like this are not necessarily a done deal.

It is when companies own the Supreme Court.
So I am about to get booted off of my parents plan (college kid) come may. Would it be a smart option to buy a tmobile plan right now hoping that their prices wont increase with the potential merger? I have heard their plans are cheaper..
I am using an unlocked g1 on at&t right now- and I havent had much problem with at&t- I think all cell phones companies are low grade scammers... I do not use any data, just wifi, and probably text 500/month, talk 500/month..
thought?
I talked to a few tmobile people and they all say that the plan you currently have will remain the same price IF the merge happens
stick wit tmobile. tmobile will still carry out their prices. the two companies merged. which is great cuz HTC and other phone companies wont have to make exclusive phones for Tmobile etc. it will be available to both companies. so we get benefit of the new phones.
If noticed on alot of 3g and 4g phones are already set up for at&t aswell as t-mobile so im really not seeing a issue with the buy out except maybe a new sim card.

Well actually I started with cingular back like 6 years ago before they were bought by at&t.. And i am still using the same cingular SIM card =) I love it, probably one of the few cingular sim cards left.. so perhaps tmobile peps will keep their tmobile sim cards when the merger is offic.
From what they're saying when the towers get swapped it will be lte service and the current 3g 4g phones won't be compatible. I guess we'll see. All speculation at this point

Att phones currentlt work in tmobile and tmobile works on att so with that said if att changes anything they will cause priblems on there own network and phones. I dont for see any problems as ive already said before look in youre APN's you can already choose att or tmobile as a carrier atleast on all my phones

Tmobile sim cards suck I will move to a att one myself. I never had a problem with them but tmobile ive gone through three in less then a year.
at and t owns us and i hate it
With the merger no one needs to upgrade phones. If ppl read tmo's news, at&t pretty much just wants tmo's 4g capable towers and servers. If the merger Goes threw at&t will pretty much be selling world phones (phones that's will support tmos 17 & 21 hundred 3/4g bands and att bands).. all in all they just want the real 4g capable towers tmo has ..
PS ... my 2cents... the merger ain't good for no one.. monopoly ain't good! (Damn bush for reallowing monopolyzation)

[POLL] Where will you be going when AT&T Acquires T-Mobile ?

Which carrier will you be going to when this god forsaken act happens ?
I love T-Mobile for the phones , plans , service , and coverage . Tis a sad
day for phone junkys . I will be going to Verizon when this happens . Its
gonna suck not being able to use my G2 anymore , Best phone ive ever
had hands down
Gonna go to SimpleMobile assuming that they don't get effected by the merger. We'll see when that happens. I'm tired of contracts and carrier bull****. I'll always bring my own phones.
I simply won't pay the ridiculous rates Verizon and AT&T charge. I can't stand helping companies that do that to people.
I pay $75 a month on T-Mo (w/ no contract, big plus) including handset protection and taxes, I'd be at about $110+ on Verizon or AT&T. And I'd be in a contract. F that.
At&t obviously

Sprint. I'll probably switch when the evo 3d is released. No reason to wait for my device to become a paperweight, might as well sell now.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Won't do business with Sprint again and absolutely despise AT&T so I guess that means Verizon.
IF the service ends up sucking (which given that they screwed up Cingular when they bought them), then I will switch to Verizon. We will see how this goes, if it even gets approved anyway, but at this point in time Verizon looks to have the better LTE network anyway.

Although the Evo 3D is tempting, I need a physical keyboard. Whoever has a 3D screen, multicore processor and a physical keyboard gets my business.
I don't think after the merger "if" approved our phone will be paper weights I'm not seeing the problem if so I'm sure ugrades and so on will be offered. Most of us on XDA don't even keep our phones for a year so by the time this all happens will be on to the next best dual core device out there. I think with the pressure on the other carriers if this deal is approved we will probably see some good offerings from other companies to solicit our business. I'm sure verizon or sprint would love some tmo customers. Sad to see tmobile go but its the nature of the beast with this economy today were seeing allot of our favorite companies disappear. I've been a tmobile customer for 6+ years and I don't ever recall them being out of the #4 spot. This was bound to happen and I'm almost glad its with at&t then the rumored sprint. I have 5 tmobile phone lines on family plan all I can do is wait and see and make the best choice when its done for my money. I'm actually looking forward to better coverage and more phone choices.

Same. AT&T's CEO said that they are "looking into" keeping the no-contract plans. Which means that they probably won't lol.
If I can stay on my $59.99 plan with no contract, and the service isn't complete abysmal, I'll stay with AT&T. If not, I guess I'll check my other options. Because I completely despise AT&T (as well as Verizon, boo CDMA) I really don't think I'd stay with them unless they can grandfather me in, which I don't think they'll do because they're not contractually obligated to offer me anything.

Simple Mobiles uses TMO's 3G towers. The same towers ATT wants to build their 4G on. Which means no more 3G towers.
Who says simple mobile won't be paying att for the towers?

sprint
if the deal goes through, and the customer service starts going to **** like at&t is known for and pricing starts rising im outta here, will def look into sprint cuz there prices are good as well as there coverage, and they got some pretty nice phones right now(evo 4g,epic 4g,evo shift) so im guessing in a year they will have better faster phones all with FFC and dual-cores....hopefully
I would love to leave right now because I'm honestly just pissed off at T-Mobile as a company (I know that DT did it, but it's a branch of them) and I don't want to give them anymore business, but, I don't have the luxury of paying $1000 to pay the ETF fees on the account.
I'll be pretty screwed if AT&T doesn't nullify contracts and let people leave.
Most likely Sprint. They're currently the closest to T-Mobile in pricing and unlimited data. Plus it looks like Sprint and Google are gonna be working more closely with the full integration of Google Voice and Google building their new gigabit broadband network in Sprint's backyard.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I'm going to have to go with Sprint as well. Even though their coverage where I am at isn't the greatest, they're the only other company that can get close to the rate plans that Tmobile offers.
Also: bugger paying $30/mo for a a data plan that I LITERALLY MUST PURCHASE TO ACTIVATE THE DEVICE even though Verizon has no 3g or 4g coverage in my area. God forbid I actually utilize a smartphone as a cellphone by turning off my data connection whenever possible. I already do this on Tmobile as they have zero 3g coverage in my zone and will likely continue doing it into the future.
Telecoms in the US are holding the consumer over a burning cauldron of oil and splitting them in half in the name of "good customer service." This unmitigated greed will not be stopped by those who are charged with protecting the populace from the foibles of big business.
Edit 2: Okay so I've done comparative pricing between my current Tmobile plan and a rough equivalent on ATT. All in all I would be paying an additional $6 dollars before tax and fees for 50 less minutes and no insurance on my device. The fact that unlimited texts cost $20/month is absolutely absurd as lets face it, that calculates out to something like just over a grand per MB of data transferred
In short: Go set your head on fire ATT. I will remove myself from the 21st century and forgo the conveniences of smartphones if it means giving you any of my money. I'll live in a box under a bridge enjoying sprint band coverage on virgin mobile for $25/month with unlimited text data and 300 talk minutes.
Simplemobile maybe a good alternative but I'm holding out for the LG phone which is supposedly going to work with at&t 3g signal as well T mobiles. Also my main concern is how Android friendly at&t will be since they are still committed primary to the iphone?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
i intend to find out if the gov't approves, then i am going to upgrade all 3 phones on my plan, and lock in my plan for 3+ years, even if ATT acquires Tmo, they will have to honor all the existing contracts for at least a few years, that we we can see the prices level out with only 3 "large" carriers...I would have to pay 75+ more dollars for a comparable plan to my tmo plan on ATT, and thats just nuts, to step down on the customer support and network quality is just crazy, but in a way since all us tmo people have good service, i see that the added towers to ATT's network will improve it for everyone, and thats why ATT wants Tmo, a 'cheap' way to 4g, not to mention the spectrum space.
Sprint for sure my parents just switched from ATT after 7 years to sprint cause I pushed them to do it, and I'm waiting for the evo 3d to come out so I can make my move.

Should I switch from tmobile to att for atrix?

Hi I currently have the new g2x from tmobile and will probably be returning it today.(too many issues). The only other phone I want is the atrix so I'm thinking of canceling my tmo service and buying the atrix. Do you guys think it is worth it. I'll be paying about $10 more a month. How does every one like the atrix and att. Or maybe a comparison between att and tmo if someone has had both.
Thank you.

Get it Unlocked
I'm with Tmobile now and using the Atrix unlocked. Try to go down that route if you have the resources to buy it outright. Otherwise, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix. The upcoming gingerbread update in the summer is only going to make it better. They've already ironed out most of the issues of early adopters with the new 4.1.83 update. The full power of this phone is yet to be unleashed.
i have an atrix on tmobile and i dont think its worth it honestly the phone has a lot of issues this is my second one from motorola and this one doesnt freeze as much but there is def a manufacturing defect there is a small section of my screen that doesnt work on either phone i had and im just living with it now becuz i dont want to send it in again and wait two weeks because it has been out getting fixed longer than i have had it I was thinking of trading mine for a g2x

What a run on sentence, not a single period in that whole statement.
But on topic,
If you can return the phone and terminate service with no cost, then do it. But if you are to far into your contract and you are facing a termination fee, I would try to find a Atrix on craigslist or a trade and sell cell phone store. Yes the bootloader is locked, but there is people hard at work trying to find a solution. Yes you could wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2, but there is no guarantee it will be a better phone.

I was also wondering this. And I will have to pay an early cancellation fee but with the g2x I got a partial upgrade and ended up paying $400 with a $50 rebate. it will cost me $200 to cancel service and,$99 for the atrix through radioshack. But the g2x is not great too many bugs and tons of backlight bleed not worth the $350 I payed with a contract extension.

OP, I'd say give it a try. Do you know of anyone who has AT&T where you live/work? I know every carrier is different in every location, so it may be worth it to give AT&T a try. I personally love the Atrix and have been with AT&T since they were Cingular. I know for my fiance, when she had T-Mobile, speeds were good right next to a tower, but it seemed like every time we traveled, she was roaming on AT&T Edge. This was true for where her parents live and where my parents live, too. At those locations, I was on AT&T 3G and speeds were great. So for us, AT&T has good 3G in more places than T-Mobile. But, everyone's mileage may vary. What is good for one person with regards to phone/network may not be good for the next person.
EDIT: oh, and you have a trial period with AT&T. If you aren't satisfied, return the Atrix and AT&T service and stick with what works for you.

I left Tmo on 04/10/11 for ATT. So far, so good. Love the Atrix since .83. Atrix is a suitable phone if you want android. iPhone is fine too. I'm still within the 30 grace period and I'm deciding to go with ATT for my mobile carrier.
My mom loves the the free mobile to mobile (no minutes used regardless of carrier).
I'm converting and I have no qualms. Haven't had any dropped calls (yet). I'd say go for ATT.
keep your g2x stay with tmo. its basically the same phone just a lg body instead of motorola. my buddy has the g2x. plus by next year all the networks tmo and att have will be shared and there will be new phones out. get your handset replaced if your having issues it may be hardware lemon. the atrix has its issues too no phone is without issues. youd just be trading one tegra based device for another and getting a slower network that costs more
The problem is the screen bleed on the g2x I've looked at several devices and they all have it. And our makes the screen look like crap. plus I've been missing way too many calls at work because bad reception. And I really want a tegra 2 over the other dual core processors.

To put it simply.. Sprint is the best provider in my opinion because of two things.
Unlimited LTE data if you're located in a city that has it ( I happen to be)
Google Wallet works out of the box without any ridiculous build.prop edits or hacks
Two reasons I feel make a huge difference and the main reason why I left T-Mobile for Sprint and got this phone.
T-Mobile
Customer service
Good coverage/service
Cheaper

Verizon.
Amazing cell tower coverage and insanely fast LTE on the 700Mhz band (great wall/building penetration).
Unlimited minutes & sms. 8GB of data. $75/mo. (Share Everything plan so I split the bill with a buddy).
AT&T
Unlimited everything. $75...with discounts.
LTE
Good Customer Service
Never paid an upgrade fee
Never paid a restocking fee
They love veterans.

Verizon Wireless, but only because I still have truly unlimited and unthrottled data with them, where I have used extremely high amounts of data without a peep. I am quite unhappy at their many anti-consumer policies just in the last 18 months alone, and with their GSIII, to be the ONLY carrier in the world to lock the bootloader and not participate in the 50gb Dropbox promo. Unlimited data is all I have to stay with them for now.
Also one bonus is allegedly their variant is global capable, which will be unlocked in a future software update. I wonder exactly which GSM frequencies it would support. Its a shame the Sprint version has an embedded sim, no way to swap it out.
I am with verizon because I have unlimited data but I am thinking about switching to ATT for my purchase of the SGS3. Just getting opinions on carriers to see which is the best. ATT is the only provider that offers some type of 4g in my local area.
there is really no "BEST" provider for this phone. Its all relative to what works best in your area in relation to cost and usage. Everyone is going to have a different opinion based on what works best for them.

Coming from someone who has spent years traveling the entire country with two phones, and from every major carrier at one time or another....there is no doubt at all.
Verizon is the way to go. Best coverage, fastest and largest LTE coverage.....they just have all the others beat in service which is all this poll can be about, because if you are only looking at stock devices, the carrier is the only difference.
Price? Who gives a damn if your bill is $130 or $150 a month.....I would take a $20 savings but I am not giving up the best service quality for a little cash every month. You get what you pay for and spotty coverage, slow data, and holes where you can't even talk are not features I want to pay for no matter how much I am saving.
You're going to get all sorts of carrier fanboy answers here, but coming from someone who has used them all, there is no doubt in my mind. Also I have seen far too many people that moved away from the other carriers to Verizon who are blown away by how much better the service is. The proof is in the pudding.

Sprint, cheaper price, true unlimited data, Google Wallet
This is not for me to compare personally, this is just a "What does the community think" discussion. I am a Verizon fanboy at heart since their coverage is virtually everywhere!

UK 4G LTE Thread

So what does everyone think about this phone not getting 4G in the UK, yet the S3 will?

not happy if that is the case! what is this based on?
After checking with Three today while ordering new phone, they confirmed that the phone is 4g enabled and will work when the network is ready. At the moment the network has been upgraded to HSPDA+ and the phone can make use of that...
Hope this is all true and not a sales ploy...

Trouble is, what frequencies will be enabled? 800, 1800 etc, etc? Will we be forced to have multiple versions of the phone which are carrier dependent like in the States?
It makes no difference to me as in the uk 4G will only be available in limited areas for a year or two and by then itll be time for the note 3. 4G would be of no use to me at all where I live in the uk.

I want to buy the note 2, but all these 4g frequencies fuss and no 100% confirmation from the carrier i use T-Mobile is holding me back.
As far as i know t-mobile will use a different frequency (ee) that note 2 does not support but again am not 100% sure.

I had a conversation at the 3 store trafford centre one of the staff advised that 3 wasn't updating to 4g but would boost their internet to 46mb ....

How can people who have the phones check?
Not sure, would like to know so I can check on Thursday...
TBH, even if it doesn't have 4g I don't think i'll be too bothered as I've never thought download speeds were an issue... HD vids on youtube always downloaded without issue for example...
Faster is always better though so will be nice to have that extra bandwidth

I got the same reply when talking online to Three CS earlier tonight.
Has anyone got their's from 3 yet?
I think I might go for it tomorrow, for the £34 one.
Do 3 let you upgrade to the One Plan mid contract though, in case I decide I want tethering? lol
That would be amazing if it was 4G, or maybe if I can get a seller to tell me it does.
The Galaxy Note II (N7100) definitely does NOT handle 4G. The good news is that it does handle HSDPA+ which is in "real world" tests gives 4G a good run for its money without the price premium. EE are expected to charge around £15 a month on top of their existing 3G tariffs per month for their 4G with data caps.
Late last night, Ofcom, EE, Vodafone and O2 agreed a faster rollout of 4G in the UK with EE4G starting in the next few weeks in some cities. Vodafone and O2 will bid for new frequencies early next year and hope to be up and running by Spring 2013. EE will therefore have a lead of around 20 weeks but are expected to insist on a minimum term contract of 12 months.
I am staying with HSDPA on 3 and will see what competition does to prices next year and what real world performance and coverage is like. Others can risk their money being Guinea Pigs!
EE will be offering the 4G version of the Note II (N7105) for customers prepared to pay for an extended contract. It will be available from EE from October 15th.
I have just ordered the N7100!

Whilst this is possible it is specifically NOT permitted under their terms and conditions.
Three only permit tethering on their mobile data packages intended for laptops and myfi devices. If you try to use an "all you can eat" phone sim in a myfi device from Three, it does not work. Despite this, it is possible to tether a phone even though it is not officially allowed.
Needless to say, the data SIM route is more expensive than the "all you can eat" packages intended for unfettered phones.

Are you sure about this?
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_ii_n7100-4854.php
On there the N7100 supports 4G!
Arghhh this is so confusing. I'm currently finished my contract with Orange and just on a roll-on contract with them. And want to use their upgraded EE's 4G and 3G signal.
Are you sure N7100 doesn't have 4G embedded? The GSM website differs..
Can everyone on 3 network just give me am idea of the download speed you get with your phones on HSPDA (or + if you get it) ?
I'm on t mobile ATM but thinking of jumping ship...

Have to agree with this.
Where I live and work these days, I won't see 4G LTE for at least a couple of years, so the lack of LTE in the Note II makes no difference to me.
Coupled with the fact that I'd rather have truly unlimited 3G from Three, as opposed to what is likely to be a tiered data plan on 4G from EE, LTE just isn't a required feature for me at present. Given the current data plans from Orange and TMo, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the data limits for EE's LTE were quite low and expensive - even a 5GB data plan won't last long at LTE speeds if you're really going to use LTE as it is intended.
Also, EE's LTE at 1800MHz isn't going to have great indoor penetration when compared to the LTE at 800MHz that we will see once the spectrum is auctioned off next year, so I'd rather wait for something better.
Ordered my Note II from Three yesterday, as my contract was coming to an end. I fully expect to replace it this time next year, despite the fact I will have to pay full price as I'll only be a year into the contract, so it's not as if I will be 'stuck' for two years anyway!

Dave
