Should I stick with Sprint

I am going to be starting a new job soon that gives me a $50 a month credit towards my cell phone bill. I will also have to get off my dad's family plan. So If you were in my shoes would you:
A. Stick with Sprint, and wait for the next badass phone they release, like the Evo 2 or something similar.
B. Find new service provider. I heard Verizon has a very data speeds. I've also heard very good things about T-Mobile.
C. Hang tight with Sprint and jump ship at a later date when service provider releases something badass.
D. Get a iPhone.
I believe I might have to either pay the early termination fee or have to do the Verizon prl hack to get out of the contract with Sprint. I do not believe the area I live in will get 4G anytime soon, so I've given up on it and will be happy with good 3G speeds. Which is why I'm leaning towards Verizon. What do you guys think?

I think Verizon is getting rid of unlimited data. Something to think about

Wait until March 22nd, that's when the next big announcement is. $50 off the cheapest company with unlimited data is not bad (assuming you have good coverage in your area)

Sprint used to be my favorite carrier (fastest data speeds + OG SERO) but I will never recommend Sprint ever again UNTIL they fix their data issues. I'd wait a month or two to see if Sprint is just upgrading or modifying their towers but after that LEAVE.
T-Mo is pretty cheap, has HSPA+, and always gets a ton of great Android phones. HSPA+ coverage while pretty broad is still spotty, but if you can verify that you're area is good to go, I'd suggest that. The LG dual core phone is set to launch and more the next big 4.3" HTC is rumored to be released on T-Mo as well.
Verizon's coverage is king, their 3G data speeds are now much better than Sprints and they are launching LTE 4G. Phone-wise you can't go wrong with them. They have everything. Of course you pay more but it's worth it if you're willing to drop the cash.
AT&T is on the up. Their entire 3G network is now HSPA+ so you're almost guaranteed to get better 3G speeds than Verizon or Sprint (I get 3-5 Mbps). Plus they are launching LTE 4G in the summer. Like Verizon they got a ton phones, they used to suck Android wise but now that their iPhone exclusivity is over they have embraced the platform as seen by the HTC Inspire, and probably the best Android phone on the market, the Atrix. Price wise it's not bad, you can get a Atrix ($200) with 450 minutes and 2GB of data plus use GV for texting and you'll pay only $65/month (or $85 with unlimited texting and mobile to mobile). The 2GB cap sucks but if you don't view a lot of video on the go and got WiFi at home you'll probably never go over.
Personally I'd go with T-Mo with a Nexus S (or wait for something better spec'd) if I was in a good HSPA+ area.

If you are going to leave sprint then your best choice is Verizon. Tmobile and ATT are despicable when it comes to coverage and call quality. I had tmobile for 7 years and had sooo many issues. I highly recommend you stay away from tmobile. I never had att but have heard numerous horror stories about drop calls.
I suggest you wait it out till the end of this month, if sprint doesn't announce anything worthy then just boat to verizon.

if you are gonna go with att or verizon, you might as well bend over and spread your butt cheeks cause thats what att and verizon do to their customer.

With the announcement of AT&T buying T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom, I am for sure going to switch back to Sprint as soon as I can.
Who's else is going to bail, or are you going to stick out or wait and see what happens?

I for one will probably be sticking with Att/Tmobile. I have to use wifi calling in my apartment, and this will eliminate the need for that. Not to mention they will probably have to grandfather in all plans they acquire for the time being.

Never had a problem with signal when I was on Sprint before, sure I don't do much traveling, but my area is covered well, and the trip from St. Louis to Nashville that I take a couple of times a year is covered very well also. So I'm not worried about coverage.
What I don't want to deal with is AT&T monopolistic ways. The things that they are doing now is going to cause the government to have to come back in and start regulating again, just as happened in the past with them. Expensive plans, locked down phones, data caps, crappy customer service. Not very customer oriented, but very line-their-own-pockets oriented instead. I can't blame a company for wanting to make money, that's the purpose of a business, but when it increases what they charge and takes away services, then I don't want anything to do with them.

If the merger is eventially aproved (antitrust gov), then I'll just wait & see in about 12 months where we stand.

How does upgrading phones work when you're under a contract with Sprint?

However you get the phone, weather from Sprint, a private party or another reatailer, you will need to either call Sprint or go to a Sprint store to get the phone activated. If you call, you can't use the phone that your about to upgrade, you'll have to use another phone such as a land line or a friends phone. Sure it's not as convenient as just swapping your SIM card, but still pretty easy, phone call usually only take a few minutes anymore. They instruct you step by step what to enter on the new phone and, in my experience, it's usually working withing minutes. In the case of going to a Sprint store to have them activate it, it's usually working before I get to my car, which is only a minute walk at the store in my area.

I've had all kinds of problems with at%t/Cingular. I'm bailing and going to sprint. Not all the towers will be shared anyway & say goodbye to tethering w/o paying 14.99 and unlimited data plans.
Sure, as long as you dont upgrade or change your plan you will be ok, but it would only be a matter of time until you switch sometime.
I can only hope Google releases the next series of nexus on sprint also. I'd hate to give up my nexus

In BOTH cases, the statements are PRESENT tense, not future tense. There is ZERO indication that TMobile WILL BE an independent entity after the acquisition has been completed. Has people's understanding of grammar become THAT incomplete and incorrect that EVERYONE in the news can't differentiate between a statement of PRESENT and one of FUTURE tense ?

There is no point in buying a TMO phone now if it'll be without provider support in a year. Even if there is scant support, the value of whatever phone I purchase will drop like a rock by the time the merger nears completion.

The value of phones drop 2 months after you buy them nowadays :/ (ok i'm exaggerating XD).
I only want to know if they will keep both companies type of GSM so I can still buy a phone in the US and use it when I travel to Europe at it's full potential.

That is PRECISELY the decision process I was going through......I figured...ok...get the G2X and keep the N1 as a spare.......Now...why the F would I want it ? It's ridiculous.....

My thoughts as well. It will be sometime down the road if we see any changes if it even gets approved. So in the mean time let your contracts run out lol

It's a shame that TMO is being bought out. I've had them for over 7 years and I've loved them. Great service, the best prices, and the best Android devices. I hate AT&T with a passion (I used to work for em so my hatred runs VERY deep). Their network is congested, slow, and under-developed. There is a real lack of Android devices, their prices suck, and there is no unlimited data. My wife and I are checking out Sprint and Verizon right now but Sprint is winning thus far. I'd rather get crappy service from a small company that has good devices with better plans and lower prices than get crappy service from either one of the 2 giants that I'd pay too much for and have a poor selection of phones.

Nope, all current T-Mobile phones would not get 3G.

Ive had Vzw and at&t for at least 2 years each. Vzw had the best coverage then at&t (in my area) but call one of them and dispute a charge on your bill. Good luck.
I deployed to Iraq, sent at&t a letter stating that I was breaking my contract as per a congressional order. Not only did they not, they charged me for 2 lines which I was never signed up for. After I came back, I found I owed nearly 1500$ in late charges and it had been sent to collections. Call them up and after nearly 30 hours, numerous certified letters sent in and faxed, it took nearly 9 months for it to be removed. Call Tmo service, you get a English speaking representative every time. Screw at&t, and any one believing nothing will change, go ahead and sign up for 2 more years and find out the hard way

Im in no rush to figure it out... but ultimately my company will decide. We arent too happy with Tmobile's support for us and might be swapping to Verizon, but that also depends on signal strength at our office (in the mountains). They pay for my phone, so I go along for the ride (although i buy my phones outright so that cost stings).

Been with Tmo since Voicstream and I will indeed miss Tmo's support in the coming years. I have ATT for DSL and for the most part is ok comparing it to Verizon Fios back in NY.
I for one will let ATT and Tmo do it's thing. ATT has its towers here as well as Tmo so I think I'll get decent coverage for now. Because of my wife's corp discount, we had to sign up for another 2yr contract about 3 months ago so we'll be grandfathered for a spell. If not, ATT better let us out of any ETF's if we do decide to go elsewhere.
But in the future, we may get a bigger corp discount with conjunction of bundling our dsl and wireless. We'll see.

It just really depends on what types of policies ATT will enforce on former T-Mobile customers and how quickly they switch things over postmerge. I have been a happy T-Mo customer for years and I was just thinking recently how much I enjoy the Nexus One and would probably not need to get a new phone for a long time. However, this clearly changes things.
I think it's highly likely that my grandfathered "perks" from being with T-Mo forever such as my $49.99 two-line family plan, $10/month @Home VOIP landline service, $10/phone web2go unlimited internet, and maybe even my 12% AAA discount will all disappear shortly after the merger is completed. Additionally, I don't tether much but I like having the option built into my N1, and ATT is going after "unauthorized" tethering on their network.
Another thing that concerns me is that I can see the "new" ATT offering some discounts to former T-Mo customers down the road when T-Mo's "old" 3G phones become useless as that spectrum is swiched over to LTE... however, I am sure that will not include N1 customers since we did not buy the phone through T-Mobile.
All in all it will have been a great ride with T-Mobile and I am sad to know that it will likely be ending. I am just going to have to see how things shake out. The increased coverage of ATT+T-Mobile would certainly be welcome, but I am concerned about pricing. I get a work discount through Sprint and they have pretty good coverage in my area - I've just never seriously considered them due to the great deal I've been getting through T-Mo. Sprint has also shown a very strong commitment to Android which I think is a positive. As the merger approaches I will definitely be re-evaluating my options.

Well... since my favorite cell provider (T-Mobile) will be bought out by AT&T (junk), I will be switching to Sprint in July. I will be getting the HTC EVO 4G 3D.

ATT did not buy T-Mobile. They have agreed to buy them, the DOJ and the FCC still have to approve the transaction. Which will be atleast a year down the road. But hey i guess if you're going to jump on the Sprint band wagon you might as well want to make the most of it.
By the way good luck talking to their CS reps. They know as much English as my 16mth old daughter.

I just came from Sprint about 2 months ago. I left because data here had become so slow, i am talking 47 kbps slow. But they are flipping the switch all over Wisconsin on 4G, and I miss my EvO 4G so much, I have to go back (and get the EvO 3D).
Day its released, day I have a mt4g for sale..
Sprint reps are ok. Don't know why everyone has a issue...

personally just left sprint. always had dropped calls, bad signal, and in order for them to fix my phone i would be charged an extra 10 a month for data that i was already paying for. if anything do the jump to verizon, only one worth going to.

I live in Miami so any cell pgone provider would be ok. They all have good service here.
I used to have AT&T a few years back and also verizon. AT&T ripped me off with charges. Verizon was great but a bit pricey. I have not been in Sprint yet tho. My brother is with them and he is very happy.
Lets see what happens in July and I decide to switch.
The EVO 3D looks really nice amd the specs are awesome. I am already missing my MT4G. The best phone I've had so far.

I couldn't have said it better my friend.

I would switch from Tmobiles GSM to Verizons CDMA if they werent so expensive. They have WAY better coverage in my area. They also seem to have better coverage in the more "boonies" type areas near here.

Most people couldn't give a damn about GSM or CDMA. Hell, you try to explain to them why they can't use a CDMA phone on a GSM network and they look at you like you have two heads. That being said, there's no way in hell I'll allow myself to use AT&T after the bull**** I just went through as an employee and a customer. Verizon is out because of the changes they just implemented re: warranty swaps. For those who haven't heard, if you have a warranty issue with your phone, Verizon plans to charge you $150 to replace it, if you have the slightest of cosmetic blemishes on your device. Volume buttons down work but you have a worn spot on your battery cover from the phone being in your pocket? $150. Screw that.
So yes, Sprint's data is slower, but in my area T-Mobile has a ton of dropped calls, bad call quality, and when I go into a large building (My office, a target, Costco, etc) I get no signal whatsoever. I'm going to try to hold off for the decision on the merger, but I might jump ship when the EVO 3D comes out.
Edit: Also, $50 for unlimited data, text, any cell call, and 500 minutes is a LOT better than the $70 I'm paying for 1000 minutes on the EM+ plan. Not complaining about T-Mo's pricing, just saying it's an option.

I would do it.

If my options are Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint...Sprint it is. CDMA or not, unlimited data plans should be unlimited. AT&T already has tiers, and Verizon is expected to adopt a similar system this summer. Would be nice if we t-mobile customers were grandfathered in, but doubt that will happen under AT&T. Will have to wait and see.

I am well aware of the differences beween GSM and CDMA. I know how the work and specs of it. But since I am not planning to move from the US, not I travel outside of it, it doesnt matter.
Right now, AT&T has the most expensive plans and they have a cap on data.
Sprint is the only one with a better pricing and unlimited cell and data coverage ( though I know is a little slower than Verizon's).

I recently read an article stating that tmobile and sprint offer faster 3g for smarphones vs dumbphone data, so it seems like sprint and tmobile may be priortizing there customer needs.. plus I heard a rumor that google may purchase sprint someday.. how awesome would that be.. I like gsm cause its world wide but so is wifi and my phone has that so nbd.. unlimited and still cheaper then the comp. If I'm browsing on my phone ill be using wifi anyhow.. as far as 4g goes pretty sure sprint is switching to lte soon and a law just passed forcing verizon and att to allow lte data roaming to smaller competitors.

I don't understand why people don't realize that nothing has happened yet and probably won't still for some time, there's no urgency to switch. I want to wait and try to get a rockin' phone in a little while when the buyout gets closer to reality. I spoke with a T-Mobile representative about it the other day and he said that most likely T-Mobile would still go by the T-Mobile name but would operate under AT&T. The only real thing that would happen is we would switch to AT&T frequencies cause they'd buy all our towers. Seems like it could only lead to better coverage, don't you think? Sprint seems too hit-or-miss for me anyway...

AT&T can't ruin T-Mobile overnight
From what I've read AT&T won't be able to repurpose any of T-Mobile's existing network for at least two years after the sale is finalized. They have also committed to honoring the contracts of existing T-Mobile customers. If the sale goes through, it should have no meaningful on your service at least through the length of any contract with T-Mo. I'm on prepaid, though, so who knows what will happen to my service.
Also, please wait and upgrade to the HTC Sensation before you brashly decide to cancel your contract and switch carriers so that I can buy it from one of you (preferably for pennies on the dollar, buyers market).

We will get grandfathered in cause they not gonna cut the customers short & if that dnt happened we still good at&t will change their plans & pricing,with all these new customers goin in to at&t,they not gonna stay ****ty forever... Im sure as hell not goin to slow ass verizon nor sprint...

Yeah except our phones aren't compatible with AT&T 3g. We can already use their edge towers.

Mostly, I'm happy that the DOJ will attempt to block the merger, just on the basis that this merger will REDUCE the competition in the USA, to just AT&T, Verizon & Sprint, with a couple of smaller regional carriers left over.
On the down side, at&t "pledged" to bring around 5,000 jobs back to the USA, but, I'd take that with a grain of salt. AT&T wants this merger, because it would be cheaper to buy out t-mobile, than spend the money building out their 4G network.
AT&T is just cheap. Multi year profits, but they won't INVEST in their network.
As for the jobs coming back to the USA. They say that, but how many t-mobile jobs would be lost after a merger.
We are pretty much in the USA, held hostage now by Verizon & AT&T.

I've been with T-Mobile for over 10-years..... My monthly bill, including tax, is $67. That's 2000 minutes, free mobile-to-mobile, unlimited text / data and handset protection insurance. My wife's iPhone 4 on aTnT with 750 minutes, no insurance and limited texts is $128-something.... To make matters worse, my unlocked Streak running on T-Mobile's 2G network is usually FASTER than her iPhone on the DeathStar's "3G" network and I can't remember the last time I had a dropped call.
Having worked in PAC-fund management for many years, I wish this move by the Justice Dept. actually meant something.... I'm afraid it's just a placebo that may only lead to more detailed disclosure on aTnT's part, and a slight delay in the transaction.... but I seriously doubt the deal will be permanently stopped... We're just looking at DOJ's window dressing at the moment

If the merger goes through I will probably go to Sprint or Verizon, who ever gets the iphone 5 when it comes out. I will NEVER use AT&T. I would go with MetroPCS, Boost, Virgin, a Walmart phone, a 7-eleven phone or ?? before I go to AT&T ..
I am preparing myself to hate my future phones if the merger goes through.

Virgin Motorola triumph is what I'll be looking at if it goes through. Decent phone and I'll save money for sure.

I was talking to a bunch of reps who happened to be in the radio shack store at my mall one day. Man where they so pissed about this merger. It would basically put Verizon and More than any SPRINT at the hands of AT&T's power. They were telling me something along the lines that it would most likely not happen because of a monopoly through AT&T even if they kept T-Mobile separate. It has something to do with Sprint buying T-Mobiles wavebands(or something like that) and if the merger went through they would no longer be able to have 4G at the rate T-Mobile was giving them but at a higher rate through AT&T. Essentially making Sprint have to put caps on data and raise rates. I have been an AT&T customer for about 15yrs now and have had very little problems with them to be honest. Yes the occasional dropped calls but no more than others have reported on other carriers. I will stay by them for as long as I can but they are starting to look very snudy!

Might not have a choice. If (when) the merger goes through, even though they say they won't, Verizon will make a play for Sprint (CDMA) to stay "competitive".
That will leave AT&T & Verizon as pretty much, the only 2 nationwide carriers.
The "agreements" between AT&T & Verizon, and the boost/virgin/walmart will probably go away (they are just being nice right now).
AT&T has spent the last 25 years reconstituting itself and has just about achieved it's goal of putting MaBell back together. Once it happens, you think prices are high & choice is poor now, just look out.

Why not just boycott the mofos then..? If only the U.S. citizens could band together we could easily control them. Without demand there is no resource for supply. Without supply there is no profit. Without profit there is no "MaBell". Make a boycott petition type deal. We can always start mass blogging and twitting to get started and word of mouuth and social networking will take the rest. With a set date and a little reassurance we could beat them down and pit em in their places, our servants of cellular communication, not as our f##$ing little to nothing no good capped and limited data sum butchering butt poking bafoon looking providers.

There's very few alternatives for GSM, At&t and tmo own the vast majority of the towers. The few towers owned by 3rd parties are regional, so unless they all have sharing agreements you'll either be roaming or using at&t or tmo's towers out of region.
Towers dont magically sprout up out of nowhere, most cell providors that arnt tmo or at&t lease airtime off them or verizon or sprint. they could literally kill all their contracts and still stay afloat by selling airtime (this is oversimplified, i honestly dont know if they can be long-term viable, but short term definitely)
The only way to get really good cell service is to be a billionare and start your own company where you can dictate terms as pretty much every carrier on the planet has it's own issues and quirks (and moving to another country for good cell service is crazy)
Online petitions are what you DONT do to get stuff done. You're literally better off not giving a damn then using online petitions. Unless you can get several dozen million esignatures it's not worth anything.

Really don't envy the GSM situation over in the states.

A petition doesn't get things done...? You ever read how class-axtion lawsuits are started...? Lol if say 10 million people all agreed to stop paying December 1st on their bills till they are satisfied with the compensation the cell provider will offer Wed get what we wanted. If there is no demand you cannot supply. Plain old economics people. 11th grade general class....

Signing a petition would only show a general public dislike of the proposed merger..... Unfortunately, that has nothing to do with and cannot stop capitalism run amuck.... Regardless of the DoJ's disapproval of the deal, only the FCC alone can stop the deal by refusing to reassign T-Mobile's wireless spectrum over to aTnT..... However, all aTnT needs to do is pressure Congress (through campaign contributions), to support the deal (by saying it will create 5,000 new jobs in this economic downturn)...... But everyone knows there's no law that would prohibit aTnT from laying off tens of thousands after the deal is done. As much as I HATE aTnT, this deal WILL go through, unfortunately

Lesser of evils: Verizon or T-Mobile?

I recently switched from T-Mobile to Verizon to get myself a Galaxy Nexus. I became severely ticked off when I found out that Verizon had messed with the wifi hotspot feature - it asked me to pay $20 per month to tether. I had been tethering for free with my Nexus One on T-Mobile. I thought phones branded as Nexus were supposed to be free from carrier modifications, but I guess that is no longer true.
This annoyance has sparked a deeper question for me of which company is the lesser of two evils, T-Mobile or Verizon. Verizon obviously has the coverage edge in the USA, but T-Mobile appears to have a less draconian business style. Being an idealist, I find it hard to give my money to Verizon. They are just too stubborn and usually do things that make me mad. T-Mobile seems a bit less harsh, but also may lack in coverage performance.
So, all of you fellow developers out there, to whom should I give my business, Verizon or T-Mobile? Please vote.

Verizon. I can get better coverage, faster data if I wanna go 4g lte. And I can tether straight from cm7. No restrictions. Verizon is continuing to prove to me that they really ARE America's most reliable network. And I'm happy.

I wouldn't mind Verizon, if they didn't do things like charge an extra $2 just to give them money.

They retracted that fee because of customer backlash. You're fine.
I'm using Verizon now and am not having any issues whatsoever. Great coverage and it's only gone down maybe once the entire time that I've been with them.

I know the fee was retracted. But for a company to attempt that says a lot about their desired business practices.

If you get coverage with tmo, go tmo. It's cheaper, not as locked down, the customer service is better, it's just awesome. The second tmo gets a high end WP7 device from Nokia, I'm headed back.

T-mo USA for sure. Their CS is AMAZING compared to anyone else. Better prices, better phone selection. GMS > CDMA. Tethering is a smaller issue, but less of with T-mo. I am rocking a family plan that is custom/grandfathered thanks to T-mo. Basically unllimited everything, do't talk that much but everything is included.

I disagree about T-Mo's phone selection, at least here in the US. Verizon and AT&T definitely have a much larger selection. Verizon has more Androids and AT&T more WP7.

Both companies are evil. Verizon is just more likely to get away with it.

I've had my fair share of luck with VZW, but everyone has their own experiences.

I agree. I'd actually put Verizon and maybe Sprint up there. AT&T still isn't completely on the ball with new phones. T-Mo not really up there.

one of the best customer service around and fair prices.
around my area I get better coverage then my friends on Verizon.
I'd have to say though far as latest phones go, Verizon has the best selection.
Tmous is getting better but not up to par to Verizon or Sprint, heck, AT&T too.
but they're starting to get pretty good phone selection as of late, which I'm happy about but definitely not there yet...
hopefully they make some serious strides on this front. it would make them complete.

T-Mobile may not be as "evil" as Verizon, but their network is an absolute joke compared to Big Red. Switching to Verizon from T-Mo was one of the best decisions that I made.

T-mobile is cheaper, and in New York, I'm pretty much covered. I've even gone so far as to get service while underground in a train station. Of course, Verizon is probably better in the coverage department.
I get 2gbs unlimited high speed data for 10$, and when that runs out, it just becomes regular internet without any extra fees. I've never went over 2 gigabytes of data. Never any lag or anything of that sort with data.
I've also been able to reduce my bill because of some unknown charges without any hassle. I've had great customer service, personally, although many others will justifiably argue otherwise.
T-mobile doesn't have the BEST arsenal of phones, but they usually get the ones I want.
I like my 60$ a month bill that includes unlimited messaging, data, and night/weekend minutes. Else where, I'd be paying close to 100$ for less than what I have now. Paying more for less doesn't sit well for me. =p

AT&T gave me my unlock code for my W810i over the phone. T-Mobile still hasn't email me my unlock code for my HD2 ! Been 5 days

Verizon is the most expensive and most restrictive carrier in the United States. CDMA phones are a nightmare. You can't import phones, they have the least amount of devs, they are huge into their bull**** "droid" line in which their biggest feature is a............locked bootloader! The nexus is even worse on verizon. Thicker housing, bad signal, verizon apps...Go ahead and talk about your LTE...most of us including myself get HSPA+ which is now supporting speeds up to 42 mbps. And really..with data caps, how many of us don't use wi-fi when we can? I can go on about this all day, Verizon is just that bad...
