[Q] Tablet encryption and battery drain - Acer Iconia A500

Hi all,
I was running stock Honeycomb 3.1 on my A500 and getting fantastic battery life, especially on standby.
I recently encrypted the tablet via "settings->location & security->encrypt tablet".
Since the encryption the battery drain has been substantial. This occurs even when the tablet is in standby.
Has anyone experienced the same issue or better yet found a fix?
Thanks in advance,
James

Soryy I bring no answer, but I do have a question or you. Why did you encrypt your tablet?
Sensitive material? You can tell me it's none of my business, but I was just wondering.

Nothing sensitive other than some family pictures.
I just like to know that in the event that the tablet was mislaid or stolen, then people would not be able to get access to the data, email accounts, etc.
Perhaps I'm being overly paranoid! ;-)

in fact if you want to use exchange push email you have to encrypt, otherwise it will not allow it. I even think this is common on all 3.1 devices and even on 3.01 1.39 devices.
so this feature sould and has to be functioning on all tablet devices.
may be i am wrong about this statement, however i think it is a good thing to have.

Thanks for the answer. I hope I never need to use that feature, but while it's nice to know the feature is there, it's troubling to know it's a battery pig.

[Q] Battery info unavailable

For some reason my tf says "battery usage info unavailable" in my settings.. anyone possibly know why?

On the same screen as you posted... press the graphical bar. It should show you more info then.
Mine does this as well, and it's not normal Honeycomb behavior. It should be showing battery use by the various systems (e.g., Display, etc.) and it's not. Something for Asus to fix.

If you do what I suggested in the post above yours, it shows that data. It just seems like they linked the code to display on the wrong page.
I have the same behavior on my eeepad. I was hoping they would have a breakdown by app in that area.

Nope. Incorrect.
There are two tabs: Battery use, and History details
"Battery use" should show (and does on the Xoom) what system components/items are using battery by percent, such as what's showing on my Xoom now: Display 38%, Android OS 20%, Gallery 14%, Tablet Idle 8%, etc.
Clicking on the chart takes you to the "History detail" tab, which shows the status of the system, e.g., GPS on, Wi-Fi, Awake, Screen on, Charging.
Where it should be showing the "Battery use" information, the TF is showing "Battery usage data not available." That's a bug.
I stand corrected.

I'm guessing this is just a bug that Asus will fix in an upcoming update. Until then, though, we're stuck.
Still not fixed.
Maybe in 3.1

I think it's something they mistakenly took out of the honeycomb code, rather than didn't put in, but as others have said, 3.1 is out soon so perhaps that fixes it. Nothing I've read about regarding updates states specifically that this will be fixed though so we will have to wait and see.
Has anyone found a workaround to this? It's still broken under Primordial 3.1 and I really miss it.
This is one of the best things about Android, hope someone here can find a fix for us.
The app Norton Mobile Utilities (Beta) (from Android Market) has a (I think) similar option. It can show a list of apps / hardware and the power they have been using.
Search Android Assistant in android market
There a battery usage in the tool menu
Any word on this? I still don't have it working, even with 3.1.
No one has said anything about it for like a month, so I'm wondering if there is some fix I'm unaware of?

Same here. Running 3.1-8.4.4.11. My Xoom running 3.2 shows information, maybe we'll see it with 3.2 coming soon for the TF... I hope so...
Prime 1.6 seems to fix that issue. My battery stats wouldn't work either until I flashed Prime 1.6. I also wiped the battery stats in clockworkmod recovery once I flashed.

I wouldn't hold my breath. It doesn't seem like this was a 3.1 issue but a mess up on the part of Asus because the Galaxy tab 10.1 ROM that is faaaar from complete has that panel up and running.

[Q] Random Reboots when sleeping.. would you exchange??

Hi all. I know there have been quite a few threads on this regarding people experiencing similar problems but Id really like opinions on whether or not you would return your TF or not. Is mine faulty? Is it ok and just needs a new update? Could it be a program? ( I don't have anything too weird installed!)
My TF has been running pretty great, but ever since updating to 3.1, my TF will completely randomly reboot all day long while in sleep mode. Sometimes quite frequently, sometimes not. It ONLY happens in sleep mode and only after 3.1 (I had official and now primordial, same deal).
I haven't encountered this while actually using the thing, but it makes me feel like maybe my TF is defective. I have no idea what could be causing it! Maybe I should remove active programs that might update one by one to see if I can pinpoint what it could be (like beautiful widgets which may update weather? Pure grid calendar widget?) ... but I don't know. Maybe my TF is just defective? I have very little time to exchange it, so I'm really going to have to make a decision soon. What would you guys do? It honestly isn't a gigantic deal but its pretty annoying, and if it ends up being a precursor to a bigger problem........
Thanks for your advice and/or opinions!

I myself have the exact same issue ever since updating to 3.1 from 3.0.1... I think other people are having the same issue. It's not your TF hardware issue... It's the 3.1 update issue. I think Asus and Google knows about this... I just hope they will come up with a solution soon.
I was about to root and install primordial ROM to see if it fix the random reboot issue.. Now you are saying that it doesn't, I now will wait for the fix from Asus or from Google...

That's a good point man. Thanks for the perspective. I think I will have to wait.
And yeah, Primordial unfortunately has been exactly the same. One thing I have noticed is that if I turn off Wifi before putting my tablet down, it doesn't appear to do the rebooting thing. So I wonder what it has to do with that.

I also have random reboot issues when I dock my tablet to my keyboard dock. It seems like it reboots more often while docked... It didn't happen on 3.0.1. So I think it's definitely 3.1 update issue...
if this is a 3.1 update issue though why is it not happening to everybody? I'm on a US TF bought from newegg last wednesday, updated to official 3.1 and I have the dock with both TF and dock on latest firmeware, this issue has never happened to me. I have had mine for tree days and it only began rebooting today(updated to 3.1 right when i got it) so it might still come
Must be a software issue like the sound bug.
Strip all the apps off your transformer (factory reset) and leave it sat.
If you don't get reboots then likely the issue is related to an app you have installed.
If you do still get reboots points more towards a Honeycomb/tablet specific issue

I also have 3.2 rooted with ad block and in Pulse Reader, it lags like hell, pages load without full content and the socalled "flash" is inexistent most of the time. Scrolling is crap, tired of stuttering. Everybody that say that their tablet is "smooth", either lie, or have no perception of smoothness. They should try an apple bitten logo tablet, I won't say the name, because haters will flame me.
Or they have overclocked like hell, but i don't like overclocking, it eats battery like a termite. And standby is crap also, only 2-3 days max, compared to 30 like "others".
thanx i am hope that acer will fix that it is a big issue ,makes me nutz sometimes..

Dear deio,
I have a perfect perception of smoothness and I'm not going to lie to you - I have A500 with Lightspeed 1.0.4 with stock kernel. Runs SMOOTH AS BUTTER! My brother owns an iPAD 2 and trust me I've played a lot with this useless (for me) thing if that's the idea of "ultimate smoothness". OK, this thread is not about iPADs vs Android tablets (no matter your conclusion that every Android tablet is ****ty), its about the lag OP experienced with OTA 3.2 . huurux , either go ahead for a custom ROM or return your device for replacement.
Having the same problem since i downloaded ota 3.2. When i say lag, i meant like it takes me a couple of minutes to open up an app (not a specific app, almost any app causes the lag) and even that, when i try to execute anything with the app it takes a few more minutes. Android Market also tells me i have updates for my apps, click on update, and the download status bar will marquee endlessly and would not let me download anything. Was thinking i had a bad update.
My question is (and help me out cause i am a noob): Is there a way i can reflash the stock ota 3.2? I have tried the "check for update" but it will just tell me that my android is up-to-date. Please help, have tried looking in the forum but couldnt find a similar solution.
Another noobish question: If i factory reset i assume it will wipe all data. Is there an easy way i can reinstall all the apps i previously had before the factory reset? If so, will i be able to retain all the progress i made in the app? (eg: game progress, rss list, etc)Tks in advance =)

Get Titanium backup from Market - its the most usefull app for me that's why I got the paid version. It will backup all your apps with data. The free version would also do the job for you but the batch process of restoring apps later will require pressing OK on each app that is currently being restored.
Thanks for the fast reply. It seems that i am not able to download any apps from the moment because of the problem. Although internet seems to be working.
Try to download Titanium Backup from their web site. As for the lag, I'm on stock 3.2 and I don't have any lag, the tablet runs even faster than with 3.2, so something is causing the lag on your tablet, I suspect a bad application, it happened to me with my iPad and iTouch, that went slow as molasses, and it was bad application. Uninstalled and everything got fine.
So for those so quickly to blame any android tablet, pleas check first that really you didn't install any crap application, specially cracked or pirated ones, that is slowing the system.

I also have this "LightSpeed" ROM, is laggy as hell, this is not a hardware problem, tried with a different Iconia, I also had a TF101, it was a bit better, but lack of USB on the slate made me chose the Iconia.
Sorry but this is about all Android tablets, and I must apologize to you, but I don't believe you. There is no smoothness in ANY Android device.
Ok, recommend a ROM that has the lowest lag, I'll try it.
I really don't get any slowdowns. I am however using tabooney with Richard trip kernel set tobuserspace in setcpu. Its been really good for me

I'm running EZTerry's "stock" rooted 3.2 OTA ROM without any lag, choppiness, or basically any issues at all. My battery life is what it's always been since buying it in May.
Unfortunately for the OP, if you accepted the OTA you can no longer root so apps like Titanium Backup or flashing a different ROM are no longer an option. You'll have to wait for someone to get root for OTA 3.2.
If you don't mind losing some of your apps, you can try a factory reset, load one app at a time from the market, and see if you can determine if an app is causing your problems.
Deio, continuing to call the A500 community liars and idiots in thread after thread is likely not going to result in much help coming your way. At this point my only advice to you is to eBay your A500 and go buy an iPad. Clearly, the A500 is simply not the device for you and you're never going to be happy with it.
deio, buy a f***ing iPad and leave us alone!

I also have the power/charge lag problem. I'm on stock rooted 3.1 using Richard Tripp's kernel to OC 1.4. Lagging during charging/ac power has been a problem for my A500 since new, with no root. Something about this engineering that makes it a problem for some units.
Going to load Taboonay and see if it makes a difference.

My config A500 3.1 rooted, I didn't have this issue be4 3.1 update.
Try thors newest v11. I only get lag on this website for some reason, it takes a quick second for the whole page to show. Its hit and miss. Every now and then it will go away. I watch alot of 720p videos. Both streaming from my home server or downloaded to one of my sdcards. All my daily uses, email, surfing, videos, etc. have almost no lag.
Ok here we go...
The best I can guess from reading about all of your lag problems is that there is a program or programs that are running in your background processes and eating up cpu/memory. Go to settings-applications-running applications and see what is on right now; subsequently see what is running directly after a reboot. If a bunch of random apps are running, it is very likely they are causing the lag. Especially if they are syncing or accessing the web. My suggestion would be to either uninstall these apps or go into their individual settings and turn off anything that would have it constantly working (not just running, it is ok for some apps to run in the background, as Android is programmed to control memory usage while allowing apps to run when not it use, but specifically 'working' in the background will eat up resources). Also, how often do you have your syncs scheduled? Any info that you do not need to have constantly synced (ie backup email addresses, facebook, weather intervals, etc.) should be either turned off or set to sync only a few times a day. For example, I have 11 running apps right now (been running without a reboot for a few days), consisting mainly of core Android processes, my keyboard, email, cpu scaler, and just 2 apps that I have downloaded that run in the background (mind you I have about 50 apps installed).
Furthermore...
All this talk about the iPad and how smooth it is...that's because it utilizes hardware accelerated graphics, something that Android will now have with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. True, the level of smoothness on an iPad typically surpasses that of an Android device, but that is soon to change. Then what will the iPad really have? A boring home screen that consists of nothing more than only our app drawer and a ton of games. Android brings WAY more to the table, no question about it.
Going on...
I am running a custom rom (Taboonay 2.1b) with an overclocked/undervolted processor (1.4ghz -150mv) and my Iconia gets kick ass battery life. I need to really try to kill this thing, no joke. I play hi-def/3d games, watch flash content on the web, Netflix, internet browsing, email, create word docs, use external usb peripherals, and more. To get the best battery life you just have to be smart about it.
Suggestions:
Turn off auto backlight. I don't think it works very well on the Iconia anyway, I have my brightness set at about 20% and it's perfectly visible (if you're used to having it brighter give it some time, you'll adjust) and when I am in bright light I simply change it as needed.
Check sync schedule. Weather really only needs to be updated like every 3 hours at most. Do you really need to know the temperature AS it changes? Don't think so.
Do you have multiple email addresses? Unless they are work related, you can probably just set them to sync manually and check it a couple times a day without it turning on itself.
Facebook/Twitter syncing is the devil. Unless you are a 15 year old girl that needs to know what her bff is doing at all times, slow down the sync on these apps!
Is your WiFi set to turn off with your screen? This is a BIG ONE! Settings-Wireless/Networks-WiFi Settings-WiFi Disconnect Policy-When Screen Turns Off. You'll notice a change immediately.
For some more info on what's killing your battery, and therefore more than likely sucking up resources and causing lag, go to Settings-Applications-Battery Use. The blue lines should line up accordingly: Your device should only be Awake and have the WiFi on when the Screen is on, except for a few dashes here and there for normal syncing. Large blue squares of Awake when the screen isn't on means something is running in the background that probably shouldn't be. WiFi on all the time kills battery. Get it? Also, the list of apps that take up battery should only be ones that YOU KNOW you are using on a constant basis. If something is on there that you don't normally use a lot, it means it's running in the background and sucking up a lot of resources (other than screen, tablet idle, and Android OS, these should be there).
Moral of the story...
I gave my 3 year old kids my iPhone. It's a kids toy, same with the iPad. Period. An Android device is one of the most powerful, customizable and capable devices available. There is a lot more that can be done with it than with most other more simple devices. With great power comes great responsibility. Take control of your device, what you do with it and what it does. Lag? What lag.
Phew. I'm a little drunk at the moment, so hope I didn't go too crazy here. What was this post about by the way? Ha! Hit the thanks button if this made any sense to anyone out there
Honestly, I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm running stock unrooted 3.2(mostly because I've been too lazy to revert back to a rooted ROM)and have very little to no lag. Realizing that its all personal perception and that I gave my Ipod to my kid so I don't really have anything to compare it to, I'm way more than happy with the performance of my tablet. The only time I have to wait is when I open up the Acer content folders, sometimes it takes a second or two for them to open. I can definitely live with that, if the trade off is a fully usable tablet that I can customize to my own needs. Battery life is well above expectations as well for me. Usually two days of semi-heavy use before I start to get that panicky feeling that comes when my battery meter drops below 30%.

so, what are the problems with 3.2 so far?

I believe it's been around for about a week now, and I already see posts about a new wi-fi issue and the stock browser freezing. I'm well aware of the issues that were caused by the 3.1 update since ive had this tablet since 3.0, so I figured i'd come here to see what to expect if I take the plunge.
i'd love to know anything yall can tell me, but did they at least fix the old wifi glitch? and what's the story on the new one?
anyone? bueller?
After I updated a couple weird things.
I play Live holdem poker on it and the poker game keeps refreshing.
When it does it makes me fold the hand.
Had some great hands that got folded.
I also keep getting a "server timed out," or similar while on the net when it did not.
update; internet not timing out now.
The game is still folding my hands.
No problem with the game on my other tablet.
Otherwise everything is working good.
Been doing 3.2 for a while now, and no problems come to mind for me.

I guess that's why every so often I see service started or similar in the notification bar.
I do not notice any problem with it while on the net.
Just that one game keeps refreshing.
I have another poker game that does not do it at all.
I wouldn't mind it except that it has folded my hand at times when they were sure winners.
Videos occasionally stutter and jump frames, while audio remains fine. Happens a lot in YouTube.
Speaking of YouTube, it crashes a lot. Not force closes, but hangs for a bit and then goes back to the main YouTube screen.

- exchange accounts issue if mails are bigger than 10 MB (my assumption)

You can blame that on a "cooked" ROM, I "believe" the OP was asking about stock 3.2, but I could be mistaken.
those issues were observed with cooked roms and with stock

If you already upgraded to 3.2 and lost your root, you can rollback to stock 3.0, then install one of the custom 3.2 ROMS in the developer’s thread that are rooted. They use a different boot loader and if you prefer stock, there are some ROMs that are very near stock. It might be a while before the devs crack the new boot loader.
I'm still seeing the stock music player not advancing to the next track if the screen is off... I know, there are other player options that don't have this issue, but it's still crap that the standard player is effectively useless and behaves differently than most music players on most phones/tablets.

Now that we have a way to install rooted 3.2 regardless of the bootloader there is little sense to continue trying to crack the new bootloader. The same happened with the Desire HD - once there was a way to downgrade, rooting was abandoned. I too prefer to have a way of rooting instead of downgrading, but it seems that downgrading is the easier path.
On topic: I have no issues whatsoever with the rooted near-stock 3.2 ROM. No wifi dropouts (not that I had any with 3.0 or 3.1) or anything like that.

Not rooted.
I got tired of waiting for the 3.2 update and decided to install a custom 3.2 ROM. Everything works great and I did have the short battery life issue mentioned in this thread..... I found it was all due to Wifi being set to always on. After I fixed that my battery life is excellent.
I get dropped hands in poker too but it's usually when I am in a weak wifi area of my house.

klaus9000 - could you please tell me what do you have fixed regarding the wifi always on issue?

Is the 6P a disappointment?

So as a real android enthusiast I bought a 6P 2 weeks back and I had really high hopes since everybody seems so stoked about this device.
After unboxing I was really impressed about the buildqualitiy and the quality of the components used to make this device, but since the first boot I'm really let down by the software experience.
I come from a OnePlus X which runs a custom rom (Resurrection Remix), the CPU governor is set to performance and all animations are speeded up by a factor of 0.75x. And I must say I have the feeling the OPX feels much smoother. At first I thought is was because of the animation speed, but I notice a lot of framedrops when animating, the RAM management seems of center (sometimes when I reopen the third app in the recents he has to reload the entire app!) and batterylife isn't that well either.
At first I thought the bad batterylife was the fault of an app I had written which wasn't optimized but nothing changed after uninstalling it.
I've done a reset of the device and have doubted to flash a custom kernel and set the governor to performance but I don't think you should need to change the software of a $600 phone for decent performance in 2016...
Am I the only one noticing this? I have the feeling that the software isn't optimized and it bugs me... If anyone can give me some tips that should help me, please do.
FYI: my device has about 3hours max of screen-on, the wifi, data and GPS are always turned on, same for bluetooth since it's connected with my watch and I have a mixed use throughout the day (facebook, chat, browsing, gaming,...)

How does this help him at all?
To the OP, it's ok to put custom software on your OPX to improve performance but not your 6P? Why?
I dunno mate, i think its just you. For me 6p is snappiest and fastest device i have ever owned. Before snapdragon 820devices started coming it was regarded as smoothest and fastest device by all review sites also. Even now, its still up there with the best. And battery life on oneplus x is mediocre, 6p is waay better, go look at gsmarena.com battery ratings. 3 hours of sot time with wifi, data, gps, bt turned on all the time and heavy usage is really not that bad. Im getting about 5h of sot, but my usage is not so heavy.
Because I have not noticed any of what OP has experienced. So my answer to his question was an unqualified NO!
And besides, he doesn't need help. He needs to stop posting useless posts.

I'll surely try custom software on the Nexus 6P but the main reason I haven't yet is that everybody is positive about the experience, I wanted to feel the experience non-flashing users have (and I have the feeling something is wrong -- this is why I asked it). I know I'm more forgiving about OPX's ****ty software because it's only $250, I didn't expect any issues (although it seems I'm the only one ) with the stock software of a $600 phone to be honest.

I posted it since I hoped it might have been caused by some service (like google play services). Not everybody has the same setup so maybe there were people with the same experience. And if you see this as a useless post you shouldn't comment on it.
So if anybody can relate to my cause, please say. I'm very curious since this can be more a problem of my perception of the software than the software itself.
No one can help you. Go and return the phone.
No!. Is great

What is your problem? Just because someone doesn't like your beloved phone you are just gonna razz him instead of help him or stay quiet?
My problem is people who want others to solve their problems by magic.
I do not believe in magic so I don't expect somebody to "fix" something. I just wanted to share my issue in the hope of learning more about android.
By the way, maybe it wasn't clear in my previous post but I do love this device. This is no hate post, more an educational post in which I have questions and hope to get answers from people who know about it
my 6p is great except for the mic and sound in calls, it sucks and disconnects a LOT, cant wait for the M10 !!
I'm not saying this because I'm a 6p owner, but because its the truth....anybody that says the 6p is a disappointment.... Could not possibly convince me any other phone makes them happy.
I would still take the 6p over ANY phone available at this time I'm writing this.

I love mine. That being said, the throttling is a huge issue on mine. Between that and Bluetooth issues, actually thinking of RMA.
No problems with mine except for the mic issue that is taking way too long for a fix IMO, the Google thread for the issue has been active for months.
Don't take people being defensive too hard. They tend to get that way.
To be honest you maybe right. Many developers here got the 6p and returned in short return for the older nexus 6.
As for on line reviews. You can't really put much faith in those as we have seen what happens when they speak honestly. They get cut off from future devices.
