My phone starting acting weird and overheated. After that it was stuck in a boot loop and I sent it in to motorola. They sent it back to me saying that it was my board and that is was damaged from misuse or abuse. How the hell is using the phone normally misuse or abuse?

How do you know that he unlocked his bootloader?
Previous posts.

Even if that was the case the phone didn't show unlocked when it went into just flashing the camera flash
Well if you unlocked your bootloader you void your warranty regardless of the issue. That doesn't mean moto won't fix a phone with an unlocked bootloader but it does mean they can choose not to because of it.

When you unlock your bootloader it burns a physical fuse. So they can tell.
Don't know who your carrier is, but I would try going through your carriers return/exchange program before I go to motorola.
How do you know a fuse is burnt out?
No one ever stated that "burning a fuse" was literal as much as an expression to convey the idea of a (presently) irreversible programming process, but I'm quite sure they can dig that information up if they know where to look in your phone's code.
Regardless, yes, unlocking, just as much as doing pretty much anything you can do through this forum, voids your warranty. That's exactly why the hard-brick from going from the OTA GB to OTA previous versions is so dreadly feared.

How exactly did you 'disconnect' the battery in a device with a non-removable battery?
Also holding down power button for 30+ Seconds is the universal "Kill switch" for situations like this, I'm thinking popping the battery was probably the worst thing you probably could have done (as you may have done something inside the unit).
Also the "other software" bit... that is not usually a problem if there is actual hardware fault with the unit... however popping the thing open to disconnect the battery most certainly would have voided the hardware portion of the warranty.

How old is it? Maybe the battery is shot?
The only other thing I can think of just off the top of my head, is the possibility you didn't ground yourself before messing with the battery and shorted something. Also not sure bout the whining noise from the N7 (as I'm nearly deaf I usually don't hear high pitch stuff from my own stuff).

I guess it is worth a try. If they decide not to honor the warranty, they will call you with the price of the repair, or if you dont want to pay, just to ship it back to you as is.

Depending on the company problems caused by hardware (if you can prove it), would be irrelevant if the bootloader was unlocked if the hardware fault would have occurred regardless. I've actually helped a friend (many years ago) get warranty on his HTC Sapphire (T-Mobile MyTouch3G Fender), even though it had been rooted and custom bootloader, because the fault was clearly hardware and unrelated to anything that was done via the software.

Are you sure? As far as I know unlocking the boot loader doesn't void the warranty. Only in case the unlocked boot loader is the reason for the fault (I.e. you flashed it with wrong software) the warranty us considered void.
A different thing is opening the case: this might be seen as a reason to declare the warranty void.

This is fundamentally true. It's part of the magnussen-moss warranty acct. But if you were denied (wrongly) are you going to legally challenge them over a $200 device?
The warranty act was put in place, partially, to keep Mfgs from requiring branded parts/consumables to get warranty protection. For instance requiring you to run Ford branded oil in your Ford truck. But a side benefit is that you cannot (should not) be denied warranty for a bad windshield washer motor because you put wider rims on your car.
Back to our devices. I think the whole warranty thing is blown out of proportion. There is no bounty for finding rooted device. I guarantee you the returns dept is short staffed and has a metric for how many devices they process a day. Is anyone seeing lots of reports of warranty denied? It's a $200 device, not a new engine for a Subaru WRX.
With all that said I'm not a fan of sending a device that was borked by a bad flash back for warranty replacement. (Bad hardware is a different case.

Now I see that i cannot root it because of Knox and that even though it is unlocked after kkitkat I wont be able to use my foreign sims when i am abroad which i always do as roaming costs are extortionate!
well my S4 has sat here all day switched off and I don't even want to switch it on, its a useless brick as far as i'm concerned i am hugely disapointed and really wish I had bought the Z1 or even the old xperia z instead of this SamDung
maybe you are one of the lucky ones with an old boot loader .if your firmware is older than mgg like ending with mga you can root without voiding your warranty .

Are you not still within a cooling off period if youre not happy and want to return it for a refund?
I wouldn't rush out to get the Z1 either as there appear to be issues unlocking the boot loader as in the below link. Ive also had HTC devices were it was nearly impossible to gain s-off (having to perform a wire trick to apply an engineering hboot). If you check the HTC One forums there are people on a recent hboot who are unable to s-off as its been locked down by HTC, which can cause headaches when trying to flash certain ROMs.
The reality is Samsung just isn't making devices specifically catering for people who like to modify/flash custom stuff. If you want full control of your device with an easily unlockable boot loader, then get a Nexus.

Of course I am not willing to void the 2 year warranty on an expensive phone this new, no way!

so now then...Anyone want to buy this S4 from me?

You do realise that even if you didn't have the locked down Knox firmware, you'd still be voiding the warranty, regardless of if you used an app like Triangle Away, right? That's the risk everyone takes when rooting.

Umm rooting does not void your warranty. At least not here in Finland. The company is responsible for proving that the cause for say a hardware defect was indeed caused by the software and not an error on their part if the phone for some reason breaks down. They usually don't bother and just repair it under warranty.

I've already accepted the risk. If something happens, it'd be very hypocritical of me to whine about something I knew could and did happen.
I know how easy it is to flash back to stock and hide evidence of it being rooted and customised. I've been doing this since the G1.

If your talking about an insurance claim you should be fine, Ive done too many insurance claims when I lost my rooted devices with no problem
However if your talking about a warranty claim and you plan on ever bringing it in to a carrier store then you could just do the carrier specific revert to stock method. And yes it would remove the rooting status completely off your device so your G2 carrier will never know it was ever rooted, which means you will not lose your warranty. This has been discussed already on the forums so moving foward you should know you will be just fine.

It depends on the carrier and the device. Usually it will not void your warranty, but some service rep at warranty places like to try and give you a hard time because they dont want to eat the cost of the device. As long as you make it a point to tell them to f off you'll be fine (in nicer words though).
So, here's what happened. Phone got somehow exposed to water, even though all the flaps were closed. Just a week before that, i got my bootloader unlocked just to get root. After the exposure, phone was not working at all, so even though i had bootloader unlocked, i sent it to the repair centre here in Slovakia. Told them that it's not booting up, paper under the flap turned soft orange after water exposure even thought it was closed. I requested the vacuum test or whatever the test is called. After a week, i got my phone back with brand new casing and motherboard. So, here's my idea. Flap was propably faulty. and the test proved that. Even having the bootloader unlocked didn't stopped them from changing all the things not charging a single Eur. It's just a tip, but, can't we just after bricking our phones, damage our flaps and get it damaged by water? There's pretty big chance that it will be accepted as flap fault. Hope this helps you somehow.
Thats fraud.....that you are suggesting
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
people like you are part of the reason why manufacturers are so tight regarding warranty and returns lol..
My case wasnt a fraud. Actually, my flap really was propably overused. But still. Do you realize that this could get some people their 500eur phone back? And I s*it you not, i was scared to death of getting it to the SC for repair being afraid it wont be accepted cause of bootloader.
The point is: You are suggesting do fraud. If the phone is bricked and the bootloader is unlocked, then you want warranty... that's your problem. Face it..

If the phone is bricked, you can claim warranty anyway. No need to fake water damage.
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
I'm telling them to not be afraid to send it to SC just because they have bootloader unlocked. As you see, you can still get it repaired. If someone will do a fraud, it's their moral problem, not mine. I haven't done anything wrong myself, as it was the flap problem and the phone should be waterproof, and bootloader ain't changing nothing about that. I'm just trying to help some people who screwed up and now want a second chance. If they won't feel guilty about doing that, well, who's stopping them.
Unlocking the bootloader has nothing to do with water damage until its a temperature problem cos of over heating after root , leading to unglued back plate and ungluing is not our fault too. So cheers you got your phone replaced

I have a question

All of those are software related customization. This problem I am having is strictly hardware. The AMOLED screen panel is internally damage somehow that cause it to messed up like that.
Flashing, rooting, tripping knox or whatever won't cause this. A lot of people get this wrong and blame on modifying the ROM as part of the cause but one must understand the difference between the 2 before making judgment.

Yeah, I know that.
I meant that messing with the software (flashing, rooting, tripping knox) voids the warranty, and if a hardware problems occurs (irrelevant to your flashing activities), such as in your case, you 'll be left without a warranty (although you didn't cause it)

Hopefully, they will provide the same solution for your case. Keep us posted, and good luck! This kind of hardware failure should never happen with a top end device like this.

in my experience from years past, nobody that takes these returns really cares about root or custom ROMS when there is a hardware problem. The customer is usually shipped a refurbished model immediately while the damaged unit goes back for repair. By the time it gets to someone whos smart enough or loyal enough to care about root, the customer already has their refurb. when i sent in my droid x2 for repair it would ALWAYS boot to recovery options on first boot, then you would have to tell it to boot normally and it would. i was fine with it but forgot about that when i went to get it repaired....
they asked me "whats that green stuff on the screen?"
me: oh nothing.... *presses -boot normally- button*
"does it do that every time?!"
me: yeah but i dont care
"wow that must be annoying!".
then they shipped it off for repair and i got my refurb.
i dont think manufacturers or service providers care as much about root as many people think. they do a lot to prevent it sometimes but I have never had an issue on getting warranty services on a rooted device.
keeping in mind that none of those warranty services were because of software problems... every phone had something wrong with it physically.
Agreed, most phone warranties are like cars. It under warranty unless the "mod" could have possibly caused the problem.
