Hi all,
I sent a support request to HTC a few days ago to basically explain that there's a lot of people that are frustrated by the fact that their updates on the support page of their website do no explain what the fixes/ROM upgrades actually do.
While this is not a particularly committed response, I just wanted to share it with you all.
My request...

Hi.
I would like to propose a future change for your support pages on the HTC website.
At the moment, when an update is released (hotfix, or ROM), the description is not very helpful and leaves your customers wondering what it is they are meant to be fixing. This also leaves us all wondering if anything actually has been fixed! Now I know that you wouldn't release hotfixes and ROM upgrades that did nothing, but we have no way of knowing what to expect. Here's a couple of recent descriptions of hotfixes...
"This update for HTC HD2 messaging lets you reach out to your friends and family with instant notifications. Keeping in touch has always been very important, and this update delivers just that: fast and reliable SMS messaging."
"This update for HTC HD2 allows for contacts stored on your SIM card to be properly displayed on your phone along with Phone and Exchange Server contacts."
And they are just the last 2.
They have all been like that, as I am sure you are aware. I have never heard of a company that releases updates without telling their customers what to expect.
Can you PLEASE in future give a real description? This would include what bugs are being addressed, and what new features are included. This is common practice for most companies, and I expect the same high level of concern for customer needs from HTC, of whom I am a loyal fan. Please consider this. There's a very large community of very frustrated users out here, and it would be very simple to make things better for them.
Thank you in advance.
John.

I agree with you that this is a good idea. The latest update does include the Camera and SMS fix. We have noted your comments and suggestions. Please keep an eye on our support section for any future changes.
Thank you

Like I said, it's not a particularly committed response, but something, nonetheless.
Fingers crossed
i think its good that they will consider it... their descriptions are pretty useless and could tell us proper information about patches and hotfixes etc... but at least you got a response from them..
i think HTC's main problem when it comes to issues like that, is that theyr all of a suddein trying to be this young cool, hip company producing phones for the average joe, instead of ppl who like to dig abit deeper into the phone. so its easier to post a update description that ultimately tells you absolutely nothing but atleast sounds cool. rather then a large detailed post wich nobody of the new user group they are trying to reach would understand
Possibly, yeah, but it's pretty pointless to just put rubbish when you could at least say "fixes x and y issues". Even someone non-technical knows if there text messages aren't being sent, and would like to know that a hotfix is going to address that.
I just think they don't like admitting there was a bug in the first place.

Unfortunately in today's litigious society that's all too often the case with large organisations. It would be more positive for the typical consumer (i.e the one's not looking for easy fiscal gain) if the companies publicly recognised the fault and offered-up a fix/workaround at the earliest opportunity and not least kept their customers informed.

Could be a cultural thing, too... In my professional life, I deal a lot with engineers from the asian/pacific region and I can tell you that it took for ages until they realized that admitting an error and showing that you are willing to work on it is NOT seen as a sign of weakness but as a sign of strength in the western world.
I don't know if that's the case with the people who wrote the hotfix descriptions at HTC but if I'm right, we should rather encourage them instead of simply complain about their
texts.
Just my 2 cents...

I think you forgot the fact that we do encourage them - we give them a lot of money for their products. And it's not a complaint anyway. If you read the email I sent them it was a request, not a complaint.
I don't take the line that some people on here do, shouting from the rooftops that HTC have betrayed us because of a few simple issues that are being ironed out. I'm very happy with the device (and have been with all my HTC devices), but I'm not happy with the lack of information they give us when they release a fix.
I simply want to know what a fix actually does, not how important keeping in touch is. I know that. That's why I bought the phone.

John,
Thanks for your reply. I'm not quite sure whether I understand why you appear to be so heated, since I wasn't questioning your original post, in fact I was't even referring to it.
I think your email to HTC was very well written, you pointed out a problem that keeps annoying me ever since I first stumbled across the HTC suport site and you did that in a kind and decent way and the response you got from the (UK?) support staff shows that at least the folks at the local first level support are quite aware of the problem.
On the other hand, however, I still think I made a valid point. When dealing with international partners, it's allways wise to put oneself in the other one's position for a second. And I, for my part, can hear the typical asian flowery and long-winded way of not-telling that there was something wrong in every single hotfix description I read so far ...
From my experience, they're not going to change that anytime soon, at least not in the announcement texts that are prominently readable on the download site. Instead, we should insist on a detailed ChangeLog.txt we can download from somewhere. Thanks again for your email to HTC and lets hope for the best
Cheers, M.
Asking in a nice way gets results i see, maybe better to ask for an update instead of demanding one.....

Heh - I wasn't being heated mate - I was just making a point about something you'd said.
Please don't discount me as some ignorant noob despite my fairly low profile account.
I actually used to have an HTC Touch Pro 2 and used to flash custom ROMs like it was my job but once I got an EVO I decided against it because I didn't really have any complaints with the stock system. Until now of course.
I accepted the OTA update over the air without really knowing what it was. So I decided to go online and research what was actually included in the update and after doing some XDA searching was quickly refreshed on the joys of flashing customs. In the painful irony of it all, I quickly realized that by accepting the update I had screwed myself into some custom flashing purgatory where I suffer from that "itch" for a new custom ROM that we all know.
Anyways, long story short, I was wondering if there was any type of sticky/thread that is continuously updated on the progress of a 2.3.3 exploit or maybe the progress of the unrevoked team so that when I search for that sense of hope multiple times a day I can simply check one location. I did some searching for such a thread but returned no results.
Thanks in advance and hats off to the devs for all that they do.
damn....that sux that you had no complaints until AFTER the OTA update. thats definitely a bad stroke of luck.
I would say, in the mean time, try out different home launchers to try to get the different feel for them (i.e. if it's the Sense launcher that's bugging you, change it up ) I like both LPP (LauncherPro Plus) and ADW...tho I prefer LPP
and to answer the main question: No...there isnt a sticky or thread discussing the progress of the root exploit.

hopefully the devs will get the exploit out soon so 1)we stop getting the threads demanding the exploit (im not saying this is one of them...just saying that there have been 1 too many of those threads as of late) 2) so that you can start experiencing that "itch" again
I personally will take the OTA and then reroot after the exploit is out so that I'll know how to help others
Progress won't be mentioned until the actual exploit is found, so there's no need to search for a progress report. Until the exploit is found, the progress would be "nothing yet"... so that's pointless to post. As soon as a root method is made, you won't have to search for it. Go to the Evo Q&A section and you'll see questions about it - you'll see discussion & celebration in the General section. You'll probably see the root method itself (unless it's Unrevoked) in the Development section. You won't have to go past the first page to know it's here.
That being said, there's no need for a sticky. And unless you're trying to build a root method yourself, no need to search.
People have to realize that these devs do this in their free time, for free. It bothers me that people that have never given these devs anything expect the new root method now. I'm not talking about you, but so many others come here whining about nobody telling them when it will be ready or about nobody rooting it yet, as if they're owed something. If I had the skills to find a root exploit, I would stop working on it because of these kids *****ing and moaning.
Again, I'm not talking about you... I'm just ranting.
I agree completely. I found it funny that you guys call these guys "trolls." It's perfect. On the PPCGeeks forums back when I was flashing for my HTC Diamond we just called them douchebags but I like trolls, it's clever.
I also wish I had the skills to discover the exploit. I would love to give back to the community. It's all a little over my head though. I'm just another guy reaping the benefits of those generous enough to provide a more enjoyable experience from our devices and liberation from the corporate *cough* horsesh;t.

The HTC Diamond is like 3 or 4 years old by now. These days that's an eternity. I tried using my old diamond for a week or so a couple of months ago, and while I still love the size and form factor, I can't stand the lag factor. The os of windows mobile doesn't bother me, but the lack of power sure does.

I wouldn't consider myself old school at all but I would say I have experience. I was flashing for about 2 or 3 years with a combination of the Diamond and TP2.
I'm not crediting myself with any kind of "elderly knowledge" if that's what your concerned about. Some newbs probably know more than me definitely with the Evo being a different OS altogether.
And yes, I loved the phone but the lag was unbearable.

and I just read that there isn't an option to use the device as a disk drive, is it true?
It will be pushed out on 11.01.2012 but this is very confidential information, please don't tell anybody!
can someone serious answer me please?

You're in the wrong place, pal. If you really want an answer, you'll have to find a connection within Motorola... if they even have a hard date set. If you want to be taken seriously, take time to search and read before posting a question. You'd find dozens of threads on the topic in the xoom forums alone (unfortunately, since others choose not to searrch, too) and you'd quickly learn there is no answer to your question here.
You can have ICS on your xoom today if you want it, just not from Moto. Again, do some reading and research and you can determine whether available alternatives are right for you, or whether to wait for a not-yet-announced official update.
Nearly everyone here is helpful and will assist if you do your homework and still have questions... but you have to take yourself and your own questions seriously before you can expect anyone else to do so... or you can choose to be roasted.

first of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to write your answer.
I did searched(not in XDA, I searched on google) for the answer and found a lot of articles about the XOOM getting the ICS update but they all were very old so I thought that maybe Motorola released a date for the update and I didn't found an answer for that so I decided to ask here.

The problem is, and always will be - you can never set a solid release date for software upgrades when it comes to this 'chain' that the update must go through in order to be released to us.
From a manufacturer and carrier standpoint, they could never give even the slightest hint of a date for a software release until its imminently close. Reason being, there are so many variables and factors affecting a particular update. If they gave any sort of date other than "soon", then if they missed that date that everyone was expecting - customers would blow a gasket.
So essentially, from their standpoint, it is MUCH safer to keep from giving any sort of date of release.
Bottom Line: An official ICS update should be coming sometime soon. Speculation says the U.S. Wifi-only XOOM will be the first, and then others will soon follow. That is the most we know at this point.
So pull up a chair, grab a beer, and join the rest of us as we compulsively surf these android forums every day for the next piece of news to come forward.

I had some good guidance (some nice, some not so nice) when I first started using xda, so glad to pass it along. The best was not to start a new thread except as a last resort - most questions are already asked and answered somewhere, and if not there is a likely an existing thread/discussion in which the question fits. For the most part, xda members aren't jerks and are extremely helpful... but the frustration factor rises quickly when the same questions are asked and answered repeatedly. As you'll probably be told at some time, it is a developers forum not really a users forum... they've just chosen to let us in (because we help test what they're dev'ing).
One more suggestion - be more careful with your topic titles. I opened the thread to read assuming you were posting some official announcement... and would bet most others did, too. Be more clear with the title and you increase the odds that you'll get readers that can/will help.
BTW, I'm still getting used to the xda search function (a bit cumbersome, works best in my opinion searching within a subforum), and often prefer a Google search myself. If you add "xda" to your Google search terms, you'll often find what you need.

I understand your concern, the more they wait the less we can play with our toy until that other date (ya know, 23/12/2012)
I'll give you a real answer. No body knows.
It seems like the last few updates were dropped with no prior warning. I assume ICS will be a different situation and they would at least give a little heads up (or so I would hope.) If you have a 4G VZW XOOM, expect to wait another month so Verizon can tinker around with it first.
Or, if you want it now, just go to the dev section and flash the wonderful EOS ROM. It takes all of 15 minutes to do if you're already rooted. In fact, I spent more time downloading the files than I did actually flashing the recovery and the ROM + a few bits and pieces that make it work. It's well worth it.
Hope this answers your question.
After getting dragged along month-to-month waiting for an official Android update with previous devices, I've come to the personal conclusion that I'll never wait for an official Android update ever again. The custom ROMs from these forums are always better and are always available far in advance of any official release.
You may want to give this a try. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400958&page=82
Team EOS (formerly Team Tiamat) has proved to be one of the elite Android dev teams in my opinion and are worth following because they always have something new to try out.
Typically, the update will come in waves and there will be a leak to the blogs a few days before...
Kudos to the people who took the OP and his question seriously. There's no justification for being a d*** to someone who probably isn't familiar with all of the ins and outs of XDA. Come on now...
Anyway, you can watch paint dry in way less time than a carrier or OEM will deliver an official Android version update to their devices (assuming you're using something other than a Nexus device) so custom ROMs are definitely the way to go. It is not uncommon for devs here to release official ROMs before the carriers/OEMs LOL! To that end, check out one of the ICS ROMs from Team EOS in the Xoom development section. Root your Xoom if you haven't done so already, flash one of their ICS ROMs and enjoy . The devs here on XDA are good for releasing ROMs and updates in a timely manner.
I spoke to tech support last night and they did not have any information regarding this model of the Galaxy Note 10.1. Since they didn't seem very knowledgeable I sent Samsung support an email where I stated that while I do enjoy my tablet I'm rather taken aback by the lack of updates. I requested that they at least state that they're not releasing updates for this instead of having us keep hoping.
I got this reply earlier this afternoon:
=============================
Dear Steve ****,
Thank you for contacting Samsung. I understand that you are not happy with the Samsung Note as there are no updates on it.
I know how you feel as a customer. If I had been in your situation, I would feel the same.
If you are referring to the GT-N8013 Note, I am afraid to inform that, latest version available is 4.1.2. I do understand that must make you feel upset. We do not have any information on release of updates on your tablet model. I do not want to provide any false information. Hope you understand.

This obviously doesn't mean other tablets won't get updates and it's clear that the 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1 will, but it is a little refreshing to at least know not to expect anything. Disappointing, but refreshing. Hopefully this'll clarify any doubts.
Maybe I'll start working on a ROM for it. Haven't made one in a while.
Where did they say that no updates are coming? They said none are available and they don't have any information to provide on when they would be coming. Samsung has already officially announced that the tablet will be being updated to 4.4

Enjoy your TABLET No real need to chase updates. My note works perfect as it is. Thou i would enjoy the new update its not killing me not having it..
Good Luck.

When do you realize that the Samsung support is just a joke - nothing more or less... They have no info, they don't know anything and if something happens, they know it last... Sorry, but that I feel about them.
This thread is useless. There's official information out there sent out by Samsung's Press Dpt. Why did you even bother asking a tech guy/tech support when one says one thing and another says something else? Like:
- "Your tablet will get the Android OS update" (LOL, no mention of version nor anything else)
- "The Galaxy Note will get 4.2 Android update" (Yeah.....)
- "No updates"
- "No info"
Basically that resumes how useless this information was to our forums (it does not contribute to anything, really). So please request to delete this. Or you could've at least posted in the appropriate thread.

Oh, FFS. What the hell were these guys thinking?
I like to think I have a reasonable sense of humor and enjoy a good joke as much as the next person. Unfortunately, this doesn't impress me as a very good joke. I guess the moral of the story will be to ignore a few LOS updates every year before and after April 1 and let some folks get it out of their systems. Last year's mascot thing was kind of entertaining. This was a bit much, in my opinion, and if you are one of the folks who just thought this was funny as all get out and one of the best things since sliced bread, well, you are equally entitled to your opinion, I guess. Re-flashing the previous .zip takes care of it very easily. But, if Lineage developers want to be taken a bit more seriously with respect to who uses their ROMs and for what purposes, this is not exactly helpful. I don't suppose One Plus or Essential are releasing their own "spoof ROM" nor are Samsung, LG, Huawei, etc.... As the saying goes: "you never get a second chance to make a first impression."
I'm fine with most of April Fools pranks, but guys, seriously? Jokes about security are never a good idea, especially these days, when unwanted bitcoin mining scripts and virus-infested software is around every corner...
This was in extremely poor taste.
The part in the blog post - not quite unbelievable enough to be obviously a joke and placed alongside very real project updates - was questionable at best.
But the big scary warning baked into the ROM patch completely crosses the line. Flashing roms in general - even established ones like LineageOS - always comes with risks, so those of us who delve into that are always a bit nervous when changing something. You nearly gave me a heart attack.
On top of that:
- There's nothing indicating it's a joke, even after digging around. Even on lineageos.org! It wasn't until I found this forum thread that I relaxed some.
- There's no way to clear the notification? So I just get this persistent, useless notification until the next patch?
- Someone above mentioned that you could remove it by digging around in your system files and deleting a directory. So I found myself in recovery mode, poking through dangerous areas of my file system looking for the (hopefully) correct thing to delete, to get rid of a prank that was put in there on purpose.
Not cool, guys. You're better than this.
Please keep in mind that I am not a Lineage Developer or Representative in any way.
I just posted this to share it with you and was Hoping that it was an April Fools joke.
Last year's indicator for their April Fools joke was when they edited the announcement and added it to that Blog Announcement that it was a joke.
I'm hoping that they do this years any day because I would, personally, be questioning this if a week or so passes by without announcing the joke (if it is one).
I really don't like this myself and, if it was true, I would strongly preferred them to spend that time in working on something like the old CMTE for LineageOS though they did release the API's for Theming.

I'm hoping that they do this years any day because I would, personally, be questioning this if a week or so passes by without announcing the joke (if it is one).
I really don't like this myself and, if it was true, I would strongly preferred them to spend that time in working on something like the old CMTE for LineageOS.

I share your hope that it is nothing worse than a (really BAD) joke. If not, I could see lots of folks, self included, looking elsewhere for their next ROMs. It seemed fairly obvious from the user interactions that it was a hoax, and as I mentioned, re-flashing the previous zip file cleared it up straight away (and none of the "actual" changes dated 01 April were anything I personally needed anyway). Thank you for taking the time to make the initial post. I know that when I first started with CM and flashing was a new and intimidating experience, something like this would have probably sent me running and not looking back.

If this... was real it would have been a better idea as an optional addon than implementing it in their releases.
I can just imagine the kickback this would cause not only on the XDA forum but, elsewhere too.

As you know, getting any genie back into the bottle is usually a bit of a challenge. I can just imagine the kickback this WILL be causing, which is a shame. It would seem that someone wasn't thinking too clearly. I have been rather satisfied with the Lineage ROMs I use in a few different devices, and would actually be willing to (gasp) PAY a reasonable sum for them if need be, but not if this sort of thing is going to be serious. Still, I doubt they shall feel a need to close up shop over my reactions to anything they do.

Is there a way to clear this notification without flash previous build, or mess around with system files?

Doesn't appear so. Completely dumbfounded that anyone thought this was a good idea.

"If you want to disable the persistent notification, run this command from a root shell (such as adb root / recovery or terminal app) `setprop lineage.persist.nofool true` and reboot the device

Don't mention that around here, they seem to think it's all in good fun. Don't seem to see that crypto mining viruses and spyware are real things, and to put up some persistent "joke" isn't in good taste.
The Lineage Team just added the following words to the "LOSCoins" category of their Blog Post...
The following section was our yearly April Fool’s joke. It will be included in builds through 2018-04-08.
You can see it on the same (following) link as the original Blog Post...

I understand the panic some individuals (admittedly a bit on my part as well).
They are getting better at this and I can't imagine how much better they will get as time goes on.
YOU GOT ME LINEAGE GUYS!!! LMAO!!!

I actually found the joke funny. With all this coins hype around, it's well designed.
So there's a lot of people feeling cool by flashing their phone with weekly builds but feel outraged by an april fool joke by those devs who let them feel cool. Isn't it ironic?
Keep on with your wonderful work devs, and enjoy! Thanks!

Well, if Lineage only had 2,000 users instead of approximately 2,000,000 (and that doesn't include all of the unofficial versions) and was not interested in being taken seriously, I would be more inclined to agree with you. As an "inside joke" to a technically sophisticated audience who will recognize it and know how to dismiss it with no strain, it could be considered amusing. But not every joke scales up to be universally appealing to a large audience. The other question that you might want to consider is how far such a joke can be allowed to go. If instead of just annoying notifications, it wiped all of your data and trashed your NVRAM, taking with it your IMEI device data and leaving you with a bricked paperweight, would that be funny? Probably not.
