fre3vo temp root - EVO Shift 4G General

Has anyone tried this?
http://therootofallevo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=76
It is now updated to support the EVO Shift.
I haven't had much luck yet but maybe someone else has? Just follow the instructions in the OP and post your results.
If it does not work for you, try the instructions in this post here http://therootofallevo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=120 and lets discuss the results.

I'm rooted but it's nice to see a little progress in getting root for the Shift.

According to that thread, this still won't work for those who took the OTA update. Boo!

Also pretty much all of page 3 is about it not working on the Shift.

Well that quote is for the EVO, not the shift. And the date of the twitter post that they added the EVO Shift support was after that post.

Development on fre3vo has been discontinued, according to the thread in the Evo 3D dev section. I think the S-OFF tool will be coming from AlphaRevX, at least for the Sensation and the Evo 3D. Not sure what this will mean for the Evo Shift. Our bootloader is emmc based, like the Evo 3D, and is numerically lower, so the same S-OFF exploit could work for the shift *crosses fingers for those that lost root, or received replacement phones with 2.3.3*

Can you tell me how you rooted yours? I tried every app out there and so far I had to factory reset over 5 times in two days. Visionary, fre3vo, z4root, revoked3... None of them worked on my evo shift with ota update . I'm tired man. Anybody can sugest something that may work. I don't mind rolling my sleeves up and having some fun with adb and cmd. I just need my speedy rooted. Thanks in advance, any help will be greatly appreciated.

oh OK, sorry about the misunderstanding.
any help, please?

There is currently no known way to root a Shift with the latest OTA update.
Pretty much all we can do is watch these forums and hope somebody figures out how to do it.

I was searching around their sites over at fre3vo and found this post I am just thinking maybe us shift owners can find the right exploit address for fre3vo to work for us I am going to try and give it a shot today. Agrabren said if someone finds the right address then they will add it to future builds.
Not sure if this helps but I hope so I'm sick of not having root on my phone.
I can't post the link but go to op and go to their homepage and go to the how to section and you will find the post for using fre3vo for ten root on unsupported devices.

I am not sure... I am getting su: not found when I try to run SU from command prompt.
Terminal Emulator on the phone still has the $... I feel like I am missing a step tho I am not sure what to do. I installed Superuser from the market but it doesn't do anything. Root explorer can't get root... hmm

Tweet @agraben and see what he says to do.

okay I think I might be getting closer... I don't know a lot about what all this means, just reading guides online. I need to take a linux class, but anyways.... maybe someone who knows more can assist. This is what I have done.
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cat /system/bin/sh > /system/bin/su
# chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
SU Binaries install, but Titanium Backup says:
"Busybox works but the "su" command does not elevate to root: "whoami" reports "app_135" instead of root/uid 0.

Froyo OTA Finally!

Just reporting that i received the Froyo OTA a few minutes ago. I have a Nexus one, rooted & unlocked, running frf72 rom from tesla. I was prompted to restart, and it went into the recovery screen, then it said installation had failed, could not authenticate. I assume this is because my phone is rooted and unlocked. I'm on T-mobile in dallas tx in case anyone was wondering
This is good news! Given you're not bluffing. It should still install even though your device is rooted, no?

Just logcat right from a reboot
Post the llog!

Is this real?
I mean if there 'was' a true OTA would Google have not notified via the usual channel? It certainly would be a good day for some froyo with Droid X announcement and a day before the iPhone.

adb logcat while you are starting up and then allow it to download
from a command prompt
adb logcat >> logcat62310.txt

Hi folks,

Yeah, but as long as you use applications from trusted sources there shouldn't be any problem. If you use applications from random sites it's your fault if it abuses this exploit and harms your phone.

Updates from KIES?
Hi
I'm on 2.3.5 so this method to root should work.
But will this root prevent me from getting future official updates using KIES?
Thanks
The question is: after rooting and unrooting is there any trace, counter or anything making us lose warranty?

You can push anything to /data as it's user writable. This is the mount used to install application.
The zergRush binary in /data/local/tmp is the actual binary which uses an exploit probably in the kernel to get root priviledges and then pushes su/busybox binaries.
There were many such attacks for 2.2/2.3 psneuter/rage against the cage etc earlier but they didn't work on SGS2 as the security flaw was fixed. This is a new flaw found by some brilliant dev.

Most probably it won't. But if you get official KIES update you will be unrooted again and there is a high chance Samsung will fix this flaw and you won't be able to root with this method and have to go with Insecure kernel method.

Thanks all, got all the help we needed.

Once posted, I will have a new KFU ready to flash TWRP, and allow users to flash the rooted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402440
Please take the time to thank him when it is posted, and make a few donations after you check it out and get your fire back to root Let's get him his own fire to break haha.

No, it is not. You launch an app on the kindle fire, and you can launch this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1407249
Jcase's root you will need to setup root yourself. I will add that tomorrow morning to my TWRP installer, but at the moment I am exhausted and need sleep.
So it may be a bit harder, only in that it doesn't install permanent root, just temporary to get ADB into root to flash TWRP.

Since no current technique seems to be safe from Amazon's OTA update, my guess is you would have to install CM7 at this point if you want to be truly safe. On the other hand, you could assume that the next update won't be for a while, and move ahead with the 6.2.1 and maybe order a factory cable to be ready for the next update.

How to root now that bootloader is unlocked

I was wondering if there is any specific person or group we could reach out to to help root the Nexus Player. The bootloader is easily unlocked so all we need is root to enabled quite a few features that the NP needs (access to usb drives/keys from all apps, etc).
Chainfire is, of course, the obvious first contact, but is there anyone else that has shown Lollipop kernel experience to date on any other Nexus platforms?
You need to wait for the insecure-boot.img to be uploaded by someone.
Insecure boot.img
Insecure boot.img for Nexus Player tested and works, compiled from aosp_fugu-eng.
adb shell returns a #.
I imagine it is only a matter of time until we'll see TWRP for the NP. TWRP for the Nexus 9 was just released today.

can someone try this with supersu? Chainfire released 2.23 version for the 5.0 devices. I'd try it myself but my NP didn't manage to leave the warehouse yet.
I asked ChainFire on the official cf-autroot thread about autoroot for the NP earlier this week. He said he will getting a NP soon and would look at providing an autoroot package for it.
I like the TRWP approach a little more and may move to that for my Nexus 9.
