Root without flashing anything - Galaxy S II General

Hi folks,
just tried this on my SGS2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
and it works perfectly
sgs2 rooted now without flashing any kernel or stuff, all stock
cheers

Sounds really bad if this is true. This is a major security flaw in that case. What firmware version are you running?

Yeah, but as long as you use applications from trusted sources there shouldn't be any problem. If you use applications from random sites it's your fault if it abuses this exploit and harms your phone.

can someone explain to me what this means in noob terms?
an unsecure kernel for my phone hasn't been released so i can't root, should i use this instead?

I confirm. The toolkit worked like a charm on my SGS2 2.3.5. stock KI4 ROM. The similiar thread is in SGS2 Android Original Development subforum.

How to install adb drivers for sgs2? Or samsung kies contains the adb drivers?

Updates from KIES?
Hi
I'm on 2.3.5 so this method to root should work.
But will this root prevent me from getting future official updates using KIES?
Thanks

The question is: after rooting and unrooting is there any trace, counter or anything making us lose warranty?

You can push anything to /data as it's user writable. This is the mount used to install application.
The zergRush binary in /data/local/tmp is the actual binary which uses an exploit probably in the kernel to get root priviledges and then pushes su/busybox binaries.
There were many such attacks for 2.2/2.3 psneuter/rage against the cage etc earlier but they didn't work on SGS2 as the security flaw was fixed. This is a new flaw found by some brilliant dev.

Most probably it won't. But if you get official KIES update you will be unrooted again and there is a high chance Samsung will fix this flaw and you won't be able to root with this method and have to go with Insecure kernel method.

RUU Request: 2.05.720.1

For some reason, I'm unable to receive the OTA update1. Im currently on the stock 1.32.720.1. Shipped ROMs also doesn't have this update. Can anyone help me?
Did u got any solutions .. ??? Same problems for me too
I am also in the same product code

For some reason there is no upgrade path from 1.32.720.1, only from 1.32.720.2. I guess the only real solution if you have to get to 2.05.720.1 is to find somebody that has it installed - if they can pull the ROM off their phone you should be able to flash it. But I'm no expert and have no idea exactly how they would do that...
Maybe somebody else could provide more enlightenment?

So there ain't any workaround without full root?
It is. First push busybox to /data/local. Do adb shell and then su to gain root shell. Change permissions of busybox so it becomes executable, then try using tar from busybox to pack /system into a nice compressed archive on /sdcard. After that you can adb pull that archive to your PC.

Most people are reporting that it fixes any sensitivity issues, software wise. I'm on it and so far it pretty good, a little laggy still in animations but the touch screen is working really well.

I've already updated to 370. The touch screen sensitivity is vastly improved and it is no longer overly sensitive. IMO this update got rid of the biggest issue for XTZ.
Got this update now as well. Should I clear any caches (ie. dalvik?) I have not investigated how to do this on Sony tablets yet but I assume through recovery (stock for now)

will fix the reboot problem due to the path of ric service change to /sbin .

Inside /etc/install-recovery.sh should look like this:
Code:

If necessary, open install-recovery.sh as a text file, then edit and save.

On my XTZ, ric is located in both /sbin/ and /system/bin/. The file size of the ric in /sbin/ is 9,396 bytes. The file size of the ric in /system/bin/ is 57 bytes. Obviously, the two ric files are not the same. Also, the script I posted was copied from the install-recovery.sh file on my XTZ. But hey, if your edit fixed your problem, then all is well and good, eh?

I've had the software for a few days. Defonitely improved the touch sensitivity also i think the stock sony launcher feels a bit lighter now. Still more improvement can be made. Hope 4.2.2 will be out soon and solve this slightly laggy stock launcher issue.

I think you'll still can get an OTA update if you just root the device
I don't know for sure, I didn't have time to try. Update in my country is at very slow pace, and after I root my device I haven't get update while the newest update rolling out at other country but not in my country, so I decided to install custom ROM to get latest update asap

Yes, I'm using titanium backup too for backing up and restoring apps, it's very usefull and it's worth to buy the pro version.
I think you'll also need OTA Rootkeeper to protect the root if there's OTA update so you can root your device easily, still, haven't try these yet because I already use custom ROM, but I still have it just in case I'll need it sometimes in the future. Me, I use voodoo OTA rootkeeper, the first one I found in playstore, don't know if there are any others.
Still don't know many much since this is my first time using rooted android and still learning about this device, that's least info I know and can share with you.

I would stay away. Everything I've read on the other thread points to you will soft or hard brick the phone. It basically needs to be stock everything, and possibly locked bootloader, for this to work and not brick. I might be a bit off, but I do know that those who are stock and locked haven't seemed to have any issues.
For all of you still waiting, I just had the following chat with a Sprint Rep:
Ciera B.: Hi
You: Hi, I have a Sprint Motorola Moto X and the I know that an update to the Android Software is being pushed out since last week
You: Would you know how long it might take for it to show up on my phone?
Ciera B.: A software update to 13.11.3Q2.X-69-3-8 will roll out for the Motorola Moto X (XT1056) beginning Thursday, 12/12/13 for 1000 users.
Full Client and Network Initiated Updates begin Wednesday, 12/18/13.
You: Does that mean that by tomorrow everybody should have it?
Ciera B.: All Moto X users will get it beginning Wednesday, 12/18/13.
You: So from 12/12 through 12/18 only 1000 users, the rest are getting it from 12/18?
Ciera B.: Right
You: thanx!!
Ciera B.: You're welcome.
Ciera B.: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Ciera B.: Thank you. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to you !

Unlocked bootloader is fine you just need to flash the camera update via toolkit to restore stock recovery then put the 44 update on the root of your card and check for updates so it updates the phone then you flash twrp or cwm and apply root again

I don't know what you mean by "totally similar", but one small change in the boot image is all that is required to patch towelroot. Take every update with a grain of salt...
Ok. I'm new to bin files. How would one go about flashing a bin file?

No Change to Kernel or Recovery

No change to kernel or recovery between 3.2.5 and 3.2.6--binary-compared those files within the BIN archive, and they're bit-for-bit identical.
There were noticeable changes to both kernel and recovery between 3.2.4 and 3.2.5 which probably accounts for 3.2.5---and 3.2.6--unable to roll back.
I can confirm that towelroot works.
So how would I flash a bin file?
I guess no one knows then?

If you are speaking about the update bin file you simply copy it to your sdcard and go to settings/device/system update and check now.

Can we use safetrap for this version?

Just another confirmation that towelroot does support/works to root the latest update ie., 13.3.2.6 :good:
I have not installed SU yet or attempted to block any future updates. I have read that renaming the proper odex file can stop future updates--any info on this method or other ways to accomplish would be appreciated. I would like to prevent losing root when another update comes along.
Thanks all.
