I've just moved to USA from Spain. I have a X10 and I went to Sprint to get a Voice & Data contract.
They said it is not possible because USA's SIM system is incompatible with my XPeria X10
Is that true? I cant use a european phone with an american MNO?
I'm guessing that you have an X10i? (x10a is the North American X10 variant).
Sprint isn't a GSM-SIM carrier. It's a CDMA service that uses a phone's hard coded ESN number, no simple portability option there.
If you want to use your X10i (and take advantage of 3G speeds) you have to pick either:
T-Mobile
T-Mobile ToGo prepaid
Simple Mobile prepaid
Cincinnati Bell Wireless
maybe Straight Talk prepaid?
If you don't mind edge,
AT&T and AT&T prepaid (and maybe some other prepaid companies)
Yes, I have a X10i, so that's the problem with Sprint. I'll choose another company.
Thanks! You helped me a lot
I've just signed up with tmob but my 3G indicator is not showing up? Any ideas what could be wrong. I've turned 3G on and apn settings seem to be fine? I have x10i

Hi all,
Going to Canada in a few months for an extended holiday and wanted to get a SIM over there to whack in the Exec.
What mobile operators are out there and which are the best in terms of tarrifs and coverage?
Thanks!
G
Canadian GSM Carriers
Only 2 to speak of, Telus and Rogers Mobility (which I use).
Not sure what types of rates and short term plans they have however. I'm sure their websites have all that information.
Telus is best for coverage Rogers is not bad depending on where you are if your in a main city like toronto or big city like that Rogers is great if your nayware else Telus is the way to go, if your going anyware west Alberta or BC area Telus has the best covarage anyware.
as far as plans and costs I don't know I like telus which I use but am not familiar with rogers although I'm told they are resonable. one thing tho I thought I read something about SIM if your going with a sim card I do not beleive Telus has SIMS as they are not GSM and rogers is.
thats it for my lil blurb
Has anyone been able to get their x10 on the 3g network? If so, what setting did you use?
Do you have a X10i or X10a? Only X10i can be on 3G T-Mobile in US (and WIND in Canada).
I do. It just automatically detected the t-mobile settings and got 3g.
I have an x10i (from UK) and works perfectly on T-Mobile (USA) 3G
It is an "A." Am I screwed with 3g?
Im afraid you are my friend. You need "i"...time to sell or switch to AT&T...if u sell you still should be able to by the X10i, as long as everything is still new etc
anyone want to buy a phone?
Hello All,
Just recently came across a T8282 for sale, At a local thrift store of all places (lol).
Aside from some screen scratches (I assume these did not come with a factory protector/layer I can just peel off?) and missing the stylus + SIM card, But It works perfectly.
Anyway,
This is my first "Real" cell phone or "Modern" I guess you would say.
I've always used Prepaid service and Phones provided by the Prepaid Carrier, As has my family.
We all use Virgin Mobile, And I already have an established account with funds on it for them.
Also, They just added a very reasonable monthly Data Package Plan that seems to be the best deal around in prepaid.
Would there be any possible way to use Virgin Mobile Service with my new T8282?
I'm aware Virgin does not ussualy use SIM cards (or at all) in there phones, But, I've seen some Virgin Sim cards up for sale on auctions sites that appear to be available from outside the US.
Would I be able to make one of these "Foreign" SIM Cards work properly inside the US?
And if not~
What is a good Prepaid Service Provider that uses SIM cards I could switch over to?
I'm aware prepaid is not really the way to go with a phone like this, But I'm not really a hardcore user, And Non-Contract has always got me through just fine.
Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
Oh, And does this phone come already unlocked? Or will I need to do that also?
Bad news I'm afraid
The T8282 is a European GSM/UMTS handset and as such won't work on Virgin Mobile in the US (which uses the Sprint CDMA network)
You'll need to switch to a US carrier which uses GSM - AT&T and T-Mobile are the two big networks which do. In addition, you'll only get voice and GPRS data as the phone can't use the 3G frequences used in the US (the T8285 was the version with US bands)
Virgin Mobile is a global brand, but each country runs its network seperatly. You won't be able to pick up a SIM card and expect it to work on the US Virgin network.
As ther T8282 wasn't sold officially in the US, it will already have been unlocked if it has been used with a US network.
There's other people here which have used a T8282 in the US, it's worth searching the forums.

Thanks for all the info handsomedog.
I kinda figured Virgin wouldnt work out, But had to ask.
I dont mind switching Carriers as long as its a prepaid service, But did not count on the phone not being able to "Fully" function... That really sucks.
I was just wondering if an unlocked Bell HTC Desire Z will work on the Wind Mobile network??
Thanks a lot.

The Desire Z will work if you only plan to use EDGE speeds.
You should get the T-mobile G2 because the radio uses the 3G/3.5G (HSPA) on 1700/2100 bands, same as Wind Mobile if they use 1700/2100.
The Bell Desire Z uses the 3G/3.5G (HSPA) on 850/1900 bands, same bands as AT&T.
As far as I know, Wind currently does not operate an EDGE network. So, as the above poster said, you're better off getting the T-Mobile G2.
Wind Mobile Desize Z
I have the T-Mobile G2 and it works great on the WIND network.
Wind uses ONLY AWS (1700/2100). There is no fallback edge/PCS network, except for ROAMING on ROBBERS ($0.25/minute, $4/MB).
What you should try to do is find a US ATT user who has a Vision for TMOBILE and propose a swap (since tmobile version of the hardware won't work 3G on ATT).
Alternatively, just buy a new phone and switch to Wind. The $$ savings will QUICKLY pay for the new phone -- especially since the HMP $40 unlimited everything plan is still available (I think only until this sunday unless they extend it again...). HTC DOUBLESHOT (marketed as tmobile mytouch4gslide) is the successor to htc vision, and is 100% compatible with Wind. They're $500.
I've tried going to a Wind Mobile store and testing their sim card, but it didn't work as Wind Mobile dosen't support the bands that the Desire Z has. But the G2 works on wind.

I just bought HTC G2 from t-mobile, and unlocked it, but oddly my data wont work even though i have unlimited everything you you help me with the network settings?
Did you update the APN settings? If that doesn't ring a bell, you can find a better guide than I could write by checking your favourite websearch site. If you updated the APNs and still don't have data... that seems to be an intermittent bug. Try changing the name of the data APN a few times, sometimes that'll force a connection.

Ok guys, story time. I have an HTC Desire Z. I unlocked it to work on AT&T, but it was originally a Bell Canada phone. The reason being that Bell uses the same 4G frequencies in Canada as AT&T in the US. Given as AT&T and other carriers have begun cracking down on forcing you to "upgrade" your plan when you get a smartphone or what have you, it's helpful to have phones that they can't identify. For instance, there is no way I know of to put an iPhone on the AT&T network in the US, and NOT have them automatically upgrade your data plan. However, if you have a phone they can't identify by IMEI or some other method I can't figure yet, they won't change your plan. I know this, because when I signed a plan with them ages ago, I had a Razr 3G, and so far as they know, that hasn't changed, so I have a $10 a month UNLIMITED data plan. The down side here being that I have to outright buy any handset I get, but I don't much mind that, and I don't think I'm the only one.
It's now time to upgrade, and I'm looking to get a new phone and keep the data plan the way it is, so I've gotta find a phone I like on a compatible vendor. The purpose of this thread is to start a list of international, compatible cell networks, to help out people like me, as well as cut down on the "will this phone work on this carrier if I unlock it" threads.
To start, I know Bell Canada will work with AT&T, and I'm PRETTY sure Rogers with work with T-mobile.
So:
Foreign Carrier -> U.S. Carrier
Bell Canada -> AT&T
Rogers (Canada) -> T-Mobile (needs to be confirmed)
