Canadian Mobile Operators - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi all,
Going to Canada in a few months for an extended holiday and wanted to get a SIM over there to whack in the Exec.
What mobile operators are out there and which are the best in terms of tarrifs and coverage?
Thanks!
G

Canadian GSM Carriers
Only 2 to speak of, Telus and Rogers Mobility (which I use).
Not sure what types of rates and short term plans they have however. I'm sure their websites have all that information.

Telus is best for coverage Rogers is not bad depending on where you are if your in a main city like toronto or big city like that Rogers is great if your nayware else Telus is the way to go, if your going anyware west Alberta or BC area Telus has the best covarage anyware.
as far as plans and costs I don't know I like telus which I use but am not familiar with rogers although I'm told they are resonable. one thing tho I thought I read something about SIM if your going with a sim card I do not beleive Telus has SIMS as they are not GSM and rogers is.
thats it for my lil blurb

HTC HD2, Telstra and Australia! [RELEASE DATES!]

Hi guys,
I received word late yesterday from my contacts that Telstra will be supplying the HD2 exclusively for at least 2-3 months on the NextG network.
No word on pricing yet but I have got a loose release date! For us Aussies the wait isn't too great which is a bit of a surprise for me, I thought we'd wind up being last! So without further ado:
Just wanted to let you know we finally have an idea on the Touch HD2;
Touch HD 2 – Due for release mid - late January. Exclusive to Telstra for 2 - 3 months. Launching with Windows Mobile 6.5

My name is already down for one, I can't wait!
I guess anyone not on Telstra can just use an imported one... Blue Fly Mobile are selling them for $900 at the moment.
Do you know if the "official" Australian version will have anything special that a UK one, for example, doesn't have?

A NextG compatible version is what I am after so I am holding out for it.
Basically Telstra bloatware will be the only special thing on it haha. Which I'll remove with cooking my own ROM. And of course NextG compatibility.
Hopefully the main difference will be that it will have the 850 3G band, like the Touch HD did, which will make it useable on most of AT&T's 3G network in the US.

Yea, a sweet US 3G radio.
it seems a telstra rom already leaked (841 is telstra rom code)
ftp://rom:[email protected]/Leo_HD2/Official/Leo_1.49.841.1_21869_WWE_OS.NB.rar
btw, what does it mean that the phone is only exclusive for 2-3 months? So for those 2-3mos, you can only get it through telstra (no e-retailers)? Can you get it sim-free during this time or after that time?

it simply means that in Australia, the Australian mobile phone networks like Vodaphone, Telstra, Optus, T-mobile,etc will have to wait a few months before they can have the option of selling it on their networks.
you can still get the device anywhere else in the world unlocked and as long as the device has the right network frequencies for your SIM card then you'll be fine. there are slightly different HD2's made for the world markets, because not all countries use the same network frequencies (USA being the odd-man-out of the world)
i bought my HD2 from the UK (Handtech) delivered for Au $840. the frequencies are a match for my 3mobile SIM card and the device is "unlocked" so i don't have any bull**** about vendor locking and software bloat.
Telstra/AT&T
Please post here when it is available through on online retailer with the 850Mhz Band so that US buyers on AT&T can rejoice and spend some dough...
Thanks
Am I reading this correct that the HD2 will not work on NextG? Is there a fix for this?
tchoklat
I highly doubt a Telstra released 3G mobile wouldn't work on their NextG network, kinda defeats the point.

Because the HD2 runs on UMTS 900/2100MHz. You have to wait for HTC to release another model that's NextG compatible (runs 850/2100MHz UMTS) in early 2010.
damn, what do I do with my new phone then?

use it as a $800 coaster.
or sell it.
I'm using the HD2 imported from overseas 2 weeks ago through one of those dodgy Australian online retailers (electronicbazaar.com.au) and I'm happily using my nextG simcard without problems.
The phone was shipped from HK.
I have no problems browsing or coverage but technically I shouldn't be getting access to the network.
I guess the question remains as to whether I'm accessing the nextG network or not. The carrier name is "3G 3Telstra" on the dialer and I get the "H" symbol come up on the phone. That looks good enough for me.
This information, plus p3ngwin's use of the phone on 3Mobile suggests it's not accurate to say that we can't use an unbranded Leo in Australia...
@tchoklat - have you tried using the phone yet with your NextG SIM?
Yes it fails to log on and I only see the odd 'G' or 'E' come up suggesting sporadic connection to the 3G network, not NextG. I understand that the 'H' means HSPDA or NextG

In a way you have access to Telstra 3G but not NextG. Read this http://www.austech.info/137073-post16.html
Telstra 3G = UMTS 2100 which provides 60% population coverage
Telstra NextG = UMTS 850 which provides 99% population coverage
I have a NextG sim when I was using my TP2 (the sim is my Leo now) and on my Leo I only get the EDGE network and no NextG.
Just what I have found as we have no or limited Edge where I live so the phone is basically useless. I have listed it on Ebay for anyone interested.
Ebay item number 110471705953
thanks all.
Tony
I'll tell you what, I have the unlocked import of the HD2 in the USA on at&t and the edge data on this phone seems as good as my last 3g phone. I think the speed of the phone is making up for it. Now of coarse, WITH the 3G coverage is another story but the edge is acceptable to me on this device.

I have to agree with you there. I reckons it's good enough.

Please share your T-Mobile US HD2 Unlocking and International 3G network experience

Me and seemingly hundreds of other users are waiting to see if it is possible to unlock the March 24th-released T-Mobile US HD2 and also to see if it is possible to connect to 3/3.5G networks outside the US/Canada before we purchase. Please post any experiences you have of:-
1. Unlocking the T-Mobile US version of the HD2 to use on other carriers (say how you did it and which carrier you changed to).
2. Using the T-Mobile US HD2 on a 3/3.5G network outside of North America (say which country and carrier and download speeds).
3. Flashing the T-Mobile US HD2 to different ROMs/radios.
I have contacted a carrier in Taiwan (FarEasTone) and they said that it "should" work there on the 2100Mhz band if it is unlocked but I want solid proof before I lay down the cash.
I found this old link www gsm-forum.eu/smart-phones-pdas-palm-organizers/16571-htc-unlock-free.html that has software that might've unlocked older models of HTC phones. Might be worth a try or please share if you know of any other free software that does the same thing for the T-Mobile US HD2.
Please don't bother posting if you are just asking whether it works or not.
Thanks for sharing!
Unlocking the tmobile hd2 (1024Leo)
they are calling it the 1024Leo after the fact that it has 1 gig rom. You MUST use the spl 2 to unlock it and roms specifically made for tmo hd2.
Not sure if the euro band is there but you can check phone>> settings for bands supported. Tmos rom is not bad but not for me. Cant wait to redo it.
Here is a good link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5983094#post5983094
For my knowledge, I already tried T-Mobile Touch 3G at Taiwan by Taiwan Mobile network and it is working right now. Touch 3G has same band support with TMobile US HD2. I will receive HD2 in couple days, I will try it and post the result. TMobile use 1700Mhz and 2100Mhz together for 3G but all Taiwan 3G network use 2100Mhz or 900Mhz only.
Did anyone experience??
Did anyone experience the unlocked t-mobile HD2 to work with 3g outside the US????
I hope anyone could share the experience!!

I have used my unlocked t-mobile hd2 in Latvia, Netherlands, and United Kingdom so far, and had 3G in all three countries.
I am currently using mine in the Philippines and is doing great I am getting fast speeds on Globe Telecom Network. Speed is quite good switching from 3g to H most of the time.

I was in Europe last month and got a 3G connection in France (mostly Bytel) and the UK (mostly T-Mobile). Speeds varied from about 400Kb to 1100Kb. I was using a locked phone with a T-Mobile USA SIM. I talked to a UK T-Mobile dealer and he said they were using the 2100Mhz band for 3G. Prepaid SIM cards were available everywhere. I didn't use cellular data that frequently (mostly sent pictures with WiFi) so I never bothered to get the phone unlocked.
Brazil
I Live in Brazil and my operator is " 3G BRA BrTCelular Oi "
I buy my T-Mo HD2 on april unlocked on US
Until the update to 2.13 my phone freeze many times when I connected on 3G network and next received a call
After update to 2.13 no more freeze problems
Finally!!!
Wooooooooooooohhhhhhoooooooooooo!!!
Just got the phone, and the 3g network is working perfectly like a charm!!!
Thank God!!
Awesome phone!!! I love hTC!!
So that makes Africa included with the others and especially Egypt for the TMOUS working for 3g network outside the US!!
Go ahead HD2 lovers BUY........ and ENJOY!!!
1. Unlocking the T-Mobile US version of the HD2 to use on other carriers (say how you did it)
does anyone know how to do this and have the appropriate numbers etc ???????
...you either buy an unlocking service somewhere online, or call T-Mobile customer care and request an unlock code if you are a current T-Mobile customer.
t-mobile US HD2 uses HDSPA 17/2100 bands for 3G so anywhere those bands are present, you should get 3G (unless the local carrier is blocking it for non in network phones)

do you think it will works with me in Jordan using ORANGE 3G???
thanx
Data works in England
My husband and I are in London with our unlocked TMOUS HD2 and LG Optimus T phones, and I can get 3G on Vodafone prepaid. All I had to do was dial 191 on my handset to get Vodafone customer service, and told them that I am visiting from the U.S. using an unlocked HTC HD2, and would like the APN settings for the data connection. The rep sent me a couple of text messages, one that said the set up text was also coming and what PIN to use to run the set up executable, and the other message contain the set up executable. It worked straight away, and the 3G service is pretty quick. I have looked at a YouTube video with no stutter, and launch web pages without delay. I am very pleased.
I unlocked my HTC HD2 to use it with AT&T at SuperUnlockCodes for a very cheap price and quickly.

[Q] T8282 + Prepaid?

Hello All,
Just recently came across a T8282 for sale, At a local thrift store of all places (lol).
Aside from some screen scratches (I assume these did not come with a factory protector/layer I can just peel off?) and missing the stylus + SIM card, But It works perfectly.
Anyway,
This is my first "Real" cell phone or "Modern" I guess you would say.
I've always used Prepaid service and Phones provided by the Prepaid Carrier, As has my family.
We all use Virgin Mobile, And I already have an established account with funds on it for them.
Also, They just added a very reasonable monthly Data Package Plan that seems to be the best deal around in prepaid.
Would there be any possible way to use Virgin Mobile Service with my new T8282?
I'm aware Virgin does not ussualy use SIM cards (or at all) in there phones, But, I've seen some Virgin Sim cards up for sale on auctions sites that appear to be available from outside the US.
Would I be able to make one of these "Foreign" SIM Cards work properly inside the US?
And if not~
What is a good Prepaid Service Provider that uses SIM cards I could switch over to?
I'm aware prepaid is not really the way to go with a phone like this, But I'm not really a hardcore user, And Non-Contract has always got me through just fine.
Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
Oh, And does this phone come already unlocked? Or will I need to do that also?
Bad news I'm afraid
The T8282 is a European GSM/UMTS handset and as such won't work on Virgin Mobile in the US (which uses the Sprint CDMA network)
You'll need to switch to a US carrier which uses GSM - AT&T and T-Mobile are the two big networks which do. In addition, you'll only get voice and GPRS data as the phone can't use the 3G frequences used in the US (the T8285 was the version with US bands)
Virgin Mobile is a global brand, but each country runs its network seperatly. You won't be able to pick up a SIM card and expect it to work on the US Virgin network.
As ther T8282 wasn't sold officially in the US, it will already have been unlocked if it has been used with a US network.
There's other people here which have used a T8282 in the US, it's worth searching the forums.
*Facedesk*
Thanks for all the info handsomedog.
I kinda figured Virgin wouldnt work out, But had to ask.
I dont mind switching Carriers as long as its a prepaid service, But did not count on the phone not being able to "Fully" function... That really sucks.

Good news! European i9000 gets HSPA on bell canada!

<farnsworth> Good news everybody! </farnsworth> I have the european i9000 (900/1900/2100) which I bought unlocked in New York City and have been using (with 3g/HSPA) on AT&T.
When I came home to canada, I got a bell sim card (as I have a bell plan, previously with a CDMA phone). When I started the phone, all I was getting was voice, and I was very dissapointed.
I decided to see if Rogers or Tellus would work (as somebody told me they use 1900 more than 850), and when the rogers guy tried his sim, it was the same story. THEN he figured out that for this phone, you have to manually enter the APN info for the canadian carrier. He tried it on my phone, and I started picking up EDGE.
I immediately called bell tech support for the same info, and they referred me to the website. I entered the bell APN info in the settings menu and I now have HSPA on bell in Canada on my european i9000! Spread the word!

Yeah but on the countryside 850 is the main frequency as far as i know..
Even in cities it isn't everywhere
I think i read it on engadget some time ago
Sent from my A101IT using Tapatalk
It works for me in every city around the golden horse-shoe (Toronto, Hamilton, St. Catharines, etc), even in rather rural places like Niagara-on-the-Lake and Fort Erie. I haven't tried it in Waterloo (where I go to school yet), but that is a big technology town so I'm sure it will work. Coverage in these areas is enough for me I'm just trying to shut down the "this phone will not work with bell canada's 3g network, it's been tested by multiple people" I've heard going around.
Well my euro did not get 3g around Niagara falls and here in th usa did not get 3g on most of the Boston nh i93 corridor which uses 850 mhz

[Q] European X10 with american Mobile Network Operator?

I've just moved to USA from Spain. I have a X10 and I went to Sprint to get a Voice & Data contract.
They said it is not possible because USA's SIM system is incompatible with my XPeria X10
Is that true? I cant use a european phone with an american MNO?
I'm guessing that you have an X10i? (x10a is the North American X10 variant).
Sprint isn't a GSM-SIM carrier. It's a CDMA service that uses a phone's hard coded ESN number, no simple portability option there.
If you want to use your X10i (and take advantage of 3G speeds) you have to pick either:
T-Mobile
T-Mobile ToGo prepaid
Simple Mobile prepaid
Cincinnati Bell Wireless
maybe Straight Talk prepaid?
If you don't mind edge,
AT&T and AT&T prepaid (and maybe some other prepaid companies)
Yes, I have a X10i, so that's the problem with Sprint. I'll choose another company.
Thanks! You helped me a lot
I've just signed up with tmob but my 3G indicator is not showing up? Any ideas what could be wrong. I've turned 3G on and apn settings seem to be fine? I have x10i
