DeathGrip issue - Nexus S General

Hi everyone,
Bought my SNS i9023 on 12 July 2011 (Indian version)
I'v been noticing a possible DeathGrip Issue with the phone since i bought it. The WiFi Signal & the Network Signal fade out quite a lot when i Hold the phone in my palm (the battery cover i.e. the the back side of my phone rests in my palm)
I wonder if I am the only one facing this issue or are others facing this issue as well.

I for one have never noticed this, and I've had mines for about 3 months now. Maybe you should try to get it exchanged.

Well I'm guessing your hands are covering the antennae of the phone (built into the mobo of the phone) every phone willlose signal is the bones in your hand (our any other solid thing) block the antennae. My 2¢ worth.

I m pretty sure my hands are blocking the signal coz of the way i hold the phone. would love to see a lot of other people responding to this thread

I have a similar problem but I think it might be a problem with the device so I'll need to send it back.
My connection drops a couple of times a day. I thought it may have been related to the case I use but I tried it without the case and I have the same problems.
How is your wireless signal? My Nexus S is much worse than my Nexus 1 so that's why I think (hope!) the phone is faulty. Hopefully it's not just a Samsung thing.

In my case the Connection to the MobileNetwork/WiFi does not drop by itself.
The connection becomes weak only if i hold the bottom half of the back of the phone in my plam. I mean if the bottom half of the back of the phone is covered by my palm (my palm & phone in total contact).
I dont have any problems if I am holding the phone in a way that the back of the phone is not covered by my palm.
When the phone is left alone, there is no fluctuation in the connections whatsoever.

g2 stability

im sure we've all had complaints about loose hinges and how strong and stable this phone is. coming from a g1 and being a mechanic, i put my phone through some serious strains including: full multiple water submerging, falling from third floor, banging aginst walls and through all this i had no cracked screens, broken malfunctioning or missing buttons. note: i didnt do any of these on purpose.
Now with the g2 that i bought from radio shack, i managed to shake the hinge ridiculously and it didnt fall apart and WW3 didnt ensue, considering how everyone is having problems with this phone, you have two options
1: return the phone and get another type of phone
2: stick with the phone, buy a body glove and screen protector and wait for root
i cant really comment about software, signal, reboots, and other problems like that because i havent experienced any of this. but as far as how strong the phone is, my personal experience is pretty damn good
p.s. the hinge is slightly overrated considering it doesnt just slide out instead it slides up and then out. my point being if it just slid out then it would warrant more of a need to worry. but this is my personal opinion and expirience
I've been using my G2 for about five or so days, and I haven't had any reboots, freezes, slow-downs, or anything along those lines.
The Z-hinge on mine seems OK. It does open when I hold the phone facing down, but that's really not how I plan on using my G2. It doesn't open/close during any sort of "normal" use, and that works for me. I can see how it would be an issue for some, but it simply isn't for me.
I also don't care about the internal memory, as that wasn't why I got the phone. It wasn't the selling point for me, and I don't like storing things on my phone's internal memory. The 8GB micro SC is plenty enough for most realistic scenarios, and certainly more than enough for me.
To those who are debating whether or not they want this phone: do yourself a favor and go to a local T-Mobile retail store and check it out for yourself. Don't settle on other peoples' opinion. I think that you'll conclude that the pros far outweigh the cons.
I am on my second G2 with the third on the way due to multiple issues. These issues include loose hinges(more about that in a minute) very poor reception to no reception in exact same areas where My Vibrant and Nexus One get good reception, and the black screen random shutting down issues as well as dropping calls. The loose hinge issue was not a big factor for me until I purchased the gel skin and hard case from T Mobile. With these cases on the phone it just slides open as you pick it up or handle it at all. With all that being said I do like the phone and hate to give up on it. I am hoping the current OTA will address the reception and dropping calls issues. IMO this is an excellent phone that could and hopefully will be a Super phone. My biggest concern is that as each day goes by more black screen issues etc come up, Mine just happened today after 4 days of use.

I don't mean to come off as a G2 fanboy, but it sounds to me more like you're doing something to cause the black screens, not the phone.
I haven't heard of anyone having "black screen random shutting down" issues and I've never experienced anything like it myself.
What apps are you using? It's possible you're using an unstable application that's crashing the phone.

I can confirm having this same issue, not using any out of the normal software or even any of the temp root stuff. Also apps like twitter and webbrowser will forceclose over and over again until I reboot the phone.

this is a real problem
happens to me once a day or so with completely stock g2 and just a few apps from the market
wow its really messed up that you guys are having this problem because this phone is really damn great. quick question though. where did u guys buy yours?
i got mine from radio shack and no problem for me.
my thoughts are a possibility of a bad batch, just like how some hinges are loose and some arent.

sellers:
1: t-mobile store $264 ($50 mail in rebate bull crap)
2: t-mobile shipment (same as above)

I have the stock apps that come with the phone and a couple of others that I have uninstalled and reinstalled and they are not the problem. I know some people have a hard time accepting that this phone has issues on a widespread basis. Each day it seems that another issue just seems to pop up, but once again let me say that I do like this phone and hate to give up on it. I just hope that the OTA that is supposed to being rolled out will fix all or the majority of the issues.
Reboots, freezing and black screens are well documented and widespread. It's always happens in low/no signal area, someone said their log showed that it hangs on some audio libs. In any case, I hope that upcoming OTA will fix that (it does include new radio).
Hinges IMHO are not as bad as people make them out to be, at least not to me.

Dropped my HD2 and now it gets horrible reception :/

So an irresponsible night of heavy drinking and dancing led to my phone making a crashing debut on the dance floor. I lost my battery cover, and I figured that's why my reception became so horrible and couldn't get data ANYWHERE.
I got a new cover, and still I get horrible reception. SMS won't work sometimes, I drop calls like made and data is terribly slow (Edge) if it even works at all. Sometimes 3g, gprs, or hpsda (is that right?) will work but only when I'm really close to a cell tower.
Anyone know wtf i did?
Sounds like you damaged the phones radio on the inside when it hit the ground.
Captivate 2.2.1 OCed
Atrix Root

Yes... purely on speculation you broke one of the two brass clips that make attachment to the radio antenna on the rear case.
Nothing a quick look inside can't fix...
Good luck..
I like the sounds of that
I'll crack it open tomorrow. THX!!
WOOHOO!!!!
Turns out due to the soft case, i one of the antenna tabs was bend down. Bent it back and voila!
Thx guy! I give you internet wines, 12 internet goats, and i shall dance at your wedding!
Great to hear of your success. Glad my speculation turned out to be a validation.
Awesome
hmm, my gps stopped working a few mths ago when i dropped it, , , hope my repair goes as well as yours! (when i get around to buying a new screen)

Really Disappointed

I have recently bought a Desire Z and have to say I am hugely disappointed with it thus far. I am finding that the battery life is poor and more worryingly I am continually losing my network signal. I had an HD2 previously and had none of these problems. Just wondering if the way forward is to go down the rooting route, will this improve things. I am currently on stock rom/ radio on t-mobile UK.

Never had these problems since day one... if you got dz just recently, you should get it replaced, may be it is a defective piece of hardware which is why you are losing signals and battery won't last long enough. I never had a problem with dz/tm g2's battery or network signals even with stock rom. after i flashed different rom, battery time goes up and down but never seems to be bad.
Yeah I honestly have not had any problems with my G2. I love it. My only gripe is the loose hinge issue...I took mine apart and stretched the spring to help, but it's still a little loose. Never had any issues with connectivity or battery life.
If the only real problems are battery drain and signal loss, it could be an issue with the radio. You can certainly root it and flash a new radio to see if that helps alleviate the issues. If not then there are guides here on how to put it back to factory conditions, which I would do, and see if you can get it replaced.
Or just get it replaced first and see if the next one is any better. I haven't had any issues with mine. I got it in February of this year and this is by far the best phone I have ever owned. My fiance has an HD2 which is giving her nothing but problems (kinda the reverse of your situation).
Thanks for your replies. Wondering if there is a network issue, as my wife has an HTC Wildfire which is doing the same signal loss thing, don't know if the DZ and Wildfire have anything in common which would cause this problem? Just seems odd that we have both upgraded to HTC Android phones in the last 2weeks and both now have issues.

May be it is an issue with network? Sometimes I have strange issues with Rogers, it usually happens around same area and the same time of the day, each time it happens. I wouldn't be able to do anything with my phone during the period of time if I am in the area...
Speaking of HTC, they make a very nice piece of hardware, I have seen pictures of HTC phone saves a life of a person hit by a bullet... So far, this is my 3rd HTC phone, never am disappointed, may be you just having hardluck.

You're not suppose to stretch the springs.. compress it or get stronger ones

How do you hold you phone? The bottom half inch on the back of the phone is your antenna, and if I cover that with my hand while holding my phone my signal goes to ****. I have adapted and now hold it with my left hand thumb and index finger.

Also I have taken to putting the phone in my pocket with the screen facing my body. That way it has better signal, doesn't use battery searching for signal. Also, a good failsafe to protect your screen.

Major Faults on the Samsung Galaxy S2

Hi Guys. Like to know if anyone else is experiencing these major faults on this phone. (1)My reception jumps around now and then. The g/3g/H indicator will diappear from the top and be replaced with a circle with a line in it. When this happens i am not able to browse or make a call. (2)Also i get SOME calls going to voicemail despite full reception bars(similar to fault of iphone 1/2/3/4). I have never experienced these problems on my previous Desire/Desire HD using the same carrier as i am on now(T-mobile UK). (3)My bluetooth headset goes funny now and then when i make or recieve a call. It does not respond and thus does not allow me to make or receive the call. I can't even use the phone at this time. i have to disconnect my the call. My headset is Jawbone Icon. (4)The phone overheats when playing games. I am thinking of rooting the phone to underclock back to the original 1ghz. (5)The battery is vulnerable when you start gaming on the phone. Again i think underclocking the phone could improve this. My phone is sim-free unbranded bought from carphone warehouse. I also have a few minor faults with it aswell. Weak WIFI signal. Yellow tint on left side of screen. And faulty 3.5mm jack. I still have a couple of days left to replace it for a new handset. Would you advise this or not. I don't want to end up with an even faultier handset. I still absolutely love the handset. Please give me your expert opinions ASAP. Thanx in apprehension. P.S This is my first thread on this forum. So i would appreciate some help instead of childish behaviour i.e 'No more complaints' REPLIES. Just like the saying goes, IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY THEN KEEP SHUT.
Please no, not again.
Please. No more complaint threads.

Nope and sound like network.

Nope but again network or settings
(3)My bluetooth headset
Dont know not used Bluetooth is the headset compatible with SGS2 .
(4)The phone overheats when playing games.
Dont play games but its reported it gets hot thin rear cover
I am thinking of rooting the phone to underclock back to the original 1ghz.
Breaks your warranty rooting .
(ts with it aswell. Weak WIFI signal. Yellow tint on left side of screen. And faulty 3.5mm jack. I still have a couple of days left to replace it for a new handset.
Return phone for yellow Tint and faulty Jack is what i would do .

Hahah, if you hate this just be luck you never spent any time on the Atrix boards lol!
Can people not actually read the threads made beforehand? I wont even mention the apparently non-existent search function which allegedly is broken for some people.
First thread and he starts off with a bad attitude. Return the phone, get a replacement, doh! Not rocket science.

GPS Problems? Poor Reception? Accessories to Blame?

Just a heads up to anyone experiencing GPS and or reception issues, if you have any aftermarket accessories, be conscious that they may be the cause of your problems.
I've had GPS not been able to lock for a while now, and it turns out that the sole cause of this was an aftermarket metal battery cover. As soon as I put back the stock plastic one, I got a full 8 satellite lock within 20 seconds.
Any metal case, cover, bumper, etc could be having a negative impact on your reception and or GPS. This was definitely the case for my I9100
Yes! can confirm this I had the same issue a while back.

Yup, general thing.
Had the same thing happening on the HD2 just like alot of other people who bought the rubber like protection things when they just came out.
Actually it just not only blocks GPS but also wifi and mobile signal a bit which results in a bigger battery drain too.

It was quite annoying to realize that I've gotten lost a few times the past few months all due to an accessory I paid money for
Makes sense why early iPhone 4's had problems with reception, due to the metal housing
So it's just the metal cases? I've a gel case for my SGS2 and it works great with it

It's not the iPhone's fault brother, like 'he' said; "You're holding it wrong."
On a serious note, the case definitely have impact to signal and heat dissipation. Once upon a time, my HD2 was plagued by signal+heat issue due to some crappy case.

I get you cand send e-maild but sms', no. . Since I don't know where you are from, go to your local network operator store and ask someone to give you the right number for message centre. This should be stored on your SIM card but it seems to be a little problem.
