Just a thought... but if verizon was willing to upgrade all the xooms to 4G why doesn't AT&T do the same for our phones when they roll out their LTE? Just a thought since having a powerful device (even though its crippled) with awesome speeds would be nice.

it's not that simple. there's no magic 'switch' or replaceable part that enables LTE.
That and the fact that the Xoom is a Google flagship device.

Anyone who buys the Xoom now that wants LTE later has to send their device into Moto to have the hardware upgraded to support LTE
It's quite clear that the Xoom was designed with upgradability in mind while the Atrix wasn't. Actually if I remember correctly the Xoom has an open expansion slot. I'm sure ifixit would have the information. I know however that the Atrix radio chip is soldered in place. Realistically though, AT&T has no active LTE network and won't until probably after the T-Mobile acquisition is complete - they have started they want to use the AWS band for their LTE network. And by then we'll all be lining up to buy the next high end phone. Hexacore anyone?

Well, they're using T-mo's bands to help expand their pre-determined LTE rollout from 80% to 95%. They also want to use T-Mo to help support their H+, but AT&T already had spectrum set up for their LTE before this acquisition
When LTE on AT&T is out you are going to have already your next Android phone with quad core processor;-)

it would be nice if motorola used this modem card for the xoom as they had promised us a free 4G upgrade in the future(2013?).
I wonder when are 3G xoom owners finally gonna get fed up and file some class action suit against motorola for promising false accusations of 4G upgrades to everyone. they never said when they would do the free upgrades so technically it could be in the year 2020
Also, with verizon having the Thunderbolt phone and Droid Charge phone running 4G on their LTE network so far, why can't motorola use a similar 4G chip as those phones?
Given the amount of time 3G xoom owners have waited very patiently for our 4G upgrade and sdcard upgrade, I wish motorola would keep us more informed on what's going on

"Verizon had promised a free 4G update for the XOOM when it launched the 3G version of the slate earlier in the year. At the time, though, no 4G miniPCI modems certified for the LTE network were available"
Motorola has nothing to do with network.
Nope, the news I'm waiting for is that I can send my Xoom in for the upgrade. I'd rather wait longer for a good, tested chip then a rushed version of something else. This is a one-time upgrade I want them to get right.

One thing I'm worried about is the fact that the Bionic was reportedly delayed due to bad battery life relating to overheating.
Apparently the LTE card and Tegra 2 processor Didnt get along and were not playing nicely together.
In the case of the Bionic, the phone was reportedly scrapped until it can be retooled and redesigned to fix its issues.
In the case of the XOOM, who knows what they can/can't do or if the same Tegra 2/LTE problems exist but the delay we've already had isn't promising.
Considering that the XOOM is the only Tegra 2 Verizon device out there (the bionic was supposed to be the next) I don't think its a far stretch to say that the XOOM could be experiencing similar issues.
Thoughts?

I thought the same thing when I heard the news about the Bionic. I'm still hoping this is an already resolved technical issue that's being fine tuned for imminent release. I'll be honest and say that I'm growing a bit impatient waiting for LTE and official SD Card support for this device. I know i'm an early adopter, but waiting months for promised functionality is not something I'm happy with right now, I travel weekly for my job and I could really use that 4G upgrade considering the poor connectivity at the area hotels.
I consider it a lesson learned and even though i'm mostly happy with my Xoom, it will be put up for sale by the summer while it still has value if Moto/VZW/Google doesn't deliver by then. I'll replace it with a wifi only tablet & a dedicated LTE modem, probably a more flexible config for my needs IMO.
This excerpt is particularly interesting...
"As well as LTE there’s quadband HSPA+..."
This could mean a AT&T / T-Mobile version might not be far behind? I already have my XOOM but wouldn't mind seeing the XOOM gain an even larger mindshare / foothold.
The furthest I'm willing to be patient with the update is if another tablet comes to Verizon with LTE.
After seeing some of the info about the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and some rumors that it'd be coming to Verizon, if that thing comes out with LTE before the XOOM gets upgraded, Verizon/MOTO would have some explaining to do.
Other than that scenario, I agree with the early adopter reasoning. I can't be too mad that its taking longer than expected, just a little disappointed.
Hmm i had the dell streak 7 on t-mobile 4g coverage area & the battery was dead in most cases in less than 3hrs even on wifi too..so i dont see the what the hold up is ..if t-mobile got it to work in that sorry excuse for a tablet (streak 7) then Verizon/motorola better step it up..it's bad to see other tablets coming out with working sd slots & some even 4g already & the xoom is still 2 steps behind !!!

T-Mobile's '4G' network runs on a 3rd generation network upgraded to '4G' speeds, it didn't require much in terms of hardware upgrades.
Verizon uses an entirely new spectrum and technology called LTE that is more of a 4G product.

Because the frequency band they are using currently...lte technology benefits exponentially on wider frequencies...fastest they can get on 5ghz is around 25mbps

Because a phone is a phone. If it does what it is supposed to do, why complain? We buy phones for what they do; whatever they'll be capable of later after updates is just a plus.
Bow chika wah wah
Why stick with Verizon? Because they're still by far the best nationwide carrier. Let's compare:
Sprint: Good satisfaction ratings, reliable network, lower prices. But their coverage isn't perfect, and they have a 4G network that's already outdated.
T-Mobile: Generally good satisfaction ratings, low prices. But like Sprint, their coverage is sub-par. Fake 4G (HSPA+) network, and doesn't even plan to develop a real 4G network for a few years. Likely will soon be part of AT&T.
AT&T: Terrible satisfaction ratings; the only carrier that's actually getting worse. Unreliable network. Has begun work on an actual 4G network (despite advertising HSPA+ as 4G like T-Mobile), but it's not active anywhere yet. Oh, and if you want to talk about mistreating Android: did you know that until just last month they didn't allow sideloading of apps?
Verizon: Has the widest-ranging, most reliable network. Tops consumer satisfaction ratings year after year (though Sprint is catching up). Has the fastest and most advanced (in both technology and deployment) 4G network, by far. And believe it or not, Verizon actually tends to be a bit more customer-friendly than other carriers. For example: they were the first to prorate early termination fees, and while they will eventually have capped data plans they've also said they'll roll out shared family data plans, something nobody else has talked about.
The consumer satisfaction ratings I'm citing, by the way, are Consumer Reports' -- you could probably find them via some Googling.

Why?
1 look at our options. Inferior screens across the board. Singlecored great phones for now, but what about next year. Overall design, few other phones are as sleek.
2 community development. Other than the nexus series or og droid, what other phone has been this great for customizing. Yes I know the driver issues are crap, but have you ever seen a bricked sgs without physical damage?
3 verizon for much of the country is the only choice. I'm not happy about it but there are simply no other options for some. If I found out tmo worked in my area I would drop verizon today.
4 and last, it seems manufactures are learning. samsung donating a sgs2 to the cyan team might just might indicate a reversal in previous ways of thinking.
If nothing else, it comes back to what other choice is there. Name any other option and there is a list of cons to go with it.

Wrong! We've hit 57mbps. Reason why it'll be slower speeds is because it will be "real world" with multiple users as apposed to 1 user testing the max speeds. Also they are going to cap the data throughput.
Just thought it was funny that verizon dubbed over a part of the commercial where a mom is talking to a verizon rep and the son steps in to talk about the Xoom. The part where he says that it is 4g LTE upgradable, they dubbed in "including the Samsung Galaxy Tab". Was quick but i heard it, nothing ground breaking but I thought it was funny.
Wow, I never heard the version that mentioned it was 4G LTE upgradable.
Certainly doesn't seem to bode well for VZW Xoom owners, especially with the 'Xoom 4G' rumors...

I know the wifi version isn't. Verizon and Motorola promised that the Verizon XOOM would recieve a hardware upgrade to add LTE radios to it within 90 days of it's launch, but it's been 90 days and it hasn't happened yet. Now there are rumors that a new XOOM will launch, LTE-ready and with upgraded hardware, before OG XOOM owners even get the LTE upgrade.

No if you read it says Sprint is terminating the agreement unless LightSquared meets their conditions on some interference issues. This is why I'm going to Verizon after my contract is up. At least then I'll have good 4G where I live and a decent LTE device to use it on. The Evo Shift will not magicaly turn into a LTE device once they get the network up and running. Unless sprint rolls out with something really good before the end of this year I'm leaving sprint.

All signs point to GNexus launch on April 15th. HTC One S is also rumored to hit us this year (I'd say probably late summer/early fall). There's still another big electronics expo thing this year, I believe, so there's a possibility we'll see more phones then.

I've been thinking about leaving Sprint as well. With the extra $10 a month they wanted when 4g first came out and now the shaky prospects of if Sprint will even use WiMax or LTE has just put me over the top on the extra $240 over the lifetime of the contract I'm paying for "the possibility to use more bandwidth".
3g where I live is at best 100K download (maybe 400k late at night). Unless they can secure full 4g coverage in the areas I use my phone and offer me a drop dead sexy deal on a phone when my contract comes up I'm most likely going to bail.
I would have bailed back when they changed the family plan with company discounts but figured the extra $7 a month wasn't worth the effort... Now I'm wishing I had made the attempt.
I'm staying with sprint for the unlimited data and San Antonio is one of the first cities to get LTE so thats a bonus for me

Of course it won't. Neither will any of the current phones that are out. You'd obviously have to upgrade to use LTE no matter what carrier you're on, so what's the big deal? It's no different than upgrading from whatever your previous phone was to the Shift for the Wimax 4G.
