Is it just a given that the ROMs for WiFi tabs are going to be fundamentally different from 3g tabs? I hated how fragmented things got with the Xoom based on what radios you had. To add to the frustration, seldom did people identify which they had so troubleshooting or picking kernels, ROMs etc. was confusing.
Hopefully if this is the case with the GT the mods will separate the forums like they are here between 10.1 and 10.1V.

from the serial port thread in dev section:
Code:
Samsung P3(Tegra 2) Bootloader (10.8.3)
Board: [B]GT-P7500/GT-P7510[/B] Rev04
Build On: Jun 2 2011 22:35:21
system_rev: 0x0e
So I guess there is no difference.
P7510 is the wifi only, p7500 the 3g

hello!
this is my first time posting here. im planning to buy a galaxy tab wifi only model. the only problem i have right now is that im unsure if i could use the developments in the CDMA or GSM parts of the forum about the tab. Or am i right in thinking that i cannot use either?
thanks!
Its a fairly new device. With different firmware. So I say wait till its in circulation and devs start working on its ROMs.
Thanx for the quick reply sir. I am also concerned with the considerably lower chance of the WiFi only model being updated to 3.0, whether by Samsung or someone here in the forum. If that's my concern, would you advice me to get the gsm version instead?

Does anyone know if this port for the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 would be of use for our Galaxy S Epic 4G phones? I'm not sure what all the hardware differences are but from what I read, the i9000 is the base model that our Epic 4G phones were created from?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338636
Im working on it privately in my spare time. They are about as similar as the Epic is to the Nexus S. Similar board, similar processor but the drivers and the radio (especially the radio) are different being that the I9000 is a GSM phone. I am a total noob in the area of this port and have mostly just stuck to modding others work for my personal use but am learning as I go. I just got a second Epic 4g along with an old board that I have added onto that is running Ubuntu as a dev comp. No ETA's, this is my fun time project that I will post up if i feel it is workable and safe.
It may help in some ways, but first we need touchscreen support and right nowc, we don't have that fully because we use different kernel touchscreen drivers than the galaxy s and nexus s ics sources. Right now, we have 2 finger touch working (barely, incredibly laggy), but 1 finger doesn't work yet. I won't post the 2 finger because its just that bad.

right on, thanks for the replies... i figured there were differences between the phones but had no clue.
I've got a Linux setup at home and have java experience and have been looking for a place to start contributing here, but it looks like this may not be the best place to start
I'm in the market for a used 7" Galaxy tab. I want to be able to flash ICS on it so naturally I looked at which devices have ICS ports already posted in the development section.
It looks like those that have ICS support also have cellular data (which I don't need.) so I started looking for used Galaxy Tabs with a cellular modem.
I found some decently priced Sprint Galaxy Tab 7" and the Tmobile Galaxy tab 7". but it looks like these are not considered to be P1000 so will they work with Cm9/ ICS?
Also, how is the GPS chip in these units? I have a Galaxy tab 8.9 and the GPS is the best I have ever seen in a tablet/phone with a full lock in under 3 seconds.
Tmobile galaxy tab 7" is SGH-T849
I am using one that I flashed with Overcome 4.1 ROM with JPZ modem and using it in Australia
It becomes exactly like a P1000. I can get 3G/HSDPA speed, I can make and receive phone calls, everything like a P1000.
thank you for the response. Have you tried cm9?
CM9 has been ported to the Sprint Tab, (in fact to the Verizon tab as well,) the kernel is not perfect at the moment, so while the Tab won't be bricked, you may experience a few more issues than if you had a GSM tab. Bear in mind, both of these are in alpha, so they have issues. As with any Alpha, Beta, or work in progress, things will not be nearly as smooth as they will be once the rom is in RC (release candidate) or final. Also, you will probably want to keep tabs, (no pun intended,) on the rom's progress and keep flashing newer versions to get enhanced functionality and stability.
Here are the two posts in the dev section about ICS on the Galaxy Tab. They are both the same rom, they are created and worked on by the same devs. They just represent different stages of development. I would suggest reading through both:
The Current Work in Progress:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385153
(This seems to be the more current build)
The Alpha 3 Version of the above ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1322059
(This is updated with each new Alpha, rather than on a rolling basis like the thread above)
I've never had any trouble getting a GPS lock in my Sprint GT7, I have on occasion used it as a GPS navigator (via Google Maps Navigation,) while in rental cars. It never steered me wrong, (pun intended.)
I hope this info makes your choice easier. Good Luck!
Thank you. Lots of good information.
If you haven't bought one, and don't mind paying a little bit more, I think you should get the GSM version (usually the T-mobile one is a bit cheaper?).
You see there are a lot more custom ROMs on GSM than CDMA, so more choices.
I think mainly because GSM is widely deployed worldwide, so we get more devs participating in that hardware.
I haven't used CM9 on my T-mobile tab, but I am 100% sure it will work. Just haven't taken the plunge.
Yeah, I'm trying to find the GSM version but the cheapest I've seen is $275 used.
The Sprint version is readily available for around $200.
This is going to replace my Pioneer navigation unit in my car so audio out via the dock is important. It will connect to a 4 channel amp. Reliable GPS is a must.
I have an 8.9" Galaxy tab which I love but it's too big and expensive to put in the dash permanently and there is no easy way to make it removable at that size while still making it look decent.
A 7" original galaxy tab is the perfect fit. Even the 7.0 plus is slightly too big.
Anyway, I'll keep looking for a cheap SGH-T849, one is bound to pop up at some point.
Why are there so many galaxy forums?
I'm trying to understand because this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1566
Is really busy, with a lot of android roms.
The ATT Galaxy S 3 android rom forums seem much smaller.
Why are these roms not compatible? Is the International version that much more popular?
The international has been out a lot longer than the US version. And they are not compatible due to different hardware.

While it may seem they're all the exact same, the various us versions have different radios and other carrier specific stuff. And remember, the international gs3 has been out since may, of course the devs are used it by now. The non-int versions really only just came out a week ago.

The international Galaxy S3 (i9300) is practically a different phone from any of the US variants, in terms of hardware. It uses a different SoC (system-on-a-chip; different processor and graphics processor) and different cellular radios.
The US variants are also all different in the regard that they each run slightly different software by default, but the only hardware difference is in the cellular radios. They share the same SoC, so it's feasible to port ROMs between them without too much work. This also applies to the Canadian variants and such, as they share the same SoC and hardware as the US variants, with the exception of those cellular radios.
The Verizon version is the black sheep in that it has a locked bootloader, and currently ROMs that utilize a non-stock kernel can only be flashed to it (and work) if a workaround is used.
The one & main reason that I m going to Give you is::::
For **Noobs** so they won't brick their phone.

Reading skills are fundamental.
The majority of noobs read "The" then continued to brick their phones.
I've got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" SGH-T779 T-Mobile edition, which I am rather quite enjoying, except there's no means to overclock, or do standard USB charging because the /sys for usb forced charging is not available.
I'm wondering if anyone's working on any kernel mods for this tablet that's compatible with the stock ROM, or if there's even a Stock-based ROM coming for it that'll be compatible with it.
I don't trust going with any of the GT-P#### ROMs because I'd most likely loose cellular service functionality which is why I specifically got the T-Mobile version for cellular support.
Try this ROM .. It is a stock based one

You can use OC kernel from AOKP ROM

Hmm, interesting. this is for the P5100, where-as I have the SGH-T779. The main concern I have with that is international version versus US version, T-Mobile support, LTE support (when it gets to my area).
I do have experience with rooting my devices, ROMing them, even hacking some pieces together to blend my own ROM as it were, but not a whole whole lot in cellular devices like this. This Tab 2 is the first cellular tab I've had, I got it so I didn't have to worry about where I was, I'd generally have internet access so long as I had WiFi or cellular data service.
I will try it after I insure I have good backups ready, and available on my microSD flashing card, if you still think that won't be an issue.
