Hi All, I've just had a PM from one of the other forum members:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4087579
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for purchasing ASUS TF101 Transformer tablet system. Currently we have noted your comment on the forum about the issues in using TF101 docking unit and we need your help to investigate the root cause of the issues. Therefore, we are happy to exchange your full TF101 system (include tablet, docking, power adaptor and cable) with a new one. If you agree, please reply with your name, phone# and e-mail, our customer service representative will contact you shortly. Your satisfaction is our goal, do not hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.
Sincerely,
Customer Service Center

After viewing his profile - he mentions that he 'had to contact Asus Support' himself for some of the issues he was having, so I'm a little suspicious that he actually works for Asus. Needless to say I'm finding this a little unusual as the couriers are turning up today to pick up my dock, and I have had no official contact from Asus about returning everything....
Has anyone else had any PMs like this - does anyone know this guy?
EDIT: It would appear I was wrong - see post #19, and others around it
I suggest you call Asus and confirm the job before you let it go
if Asus isn't in his username then it is fake. Forum vendor reps usually are in the form (vendor)(name)
So like Asusbob
Yeah, I thought as much, although I do remember seeing someone on here who was actually from Asus, but didn't have an Asus tag before their name, and now I can't remember who it was!
I think I've been a little vague and it's caused minor confusion! There isn't a courier turning up from this guy, I have a genuine courier that I arranged through Asus officially when I filled out the RMA form, but then I had this message earlier, and was just double checking that this guy genuinely wasn't from Asus.
God knows what he's phishing for - I wouldn't have thought this would be enough detail to really steal anything from me, or phone asus and arrange a different delivery address etc. Perhaps he was trying to get me to send him my tablet!
Anyway, I didn't give him any details, so have nothing to worry about - but heads up people!
Sounds like a great way to get a free system. Strange that they are asking for everything back even the cable. I would call asus ( do NOT use the number the email provices) to verify any info they give you prior to sending my stuff.
Fake

It's pretty obvious he/she is a fake and scammer considering the posts made so far. I'd report asap to a mod to get this goon banned before someone foolishly falls for it.
There are a few legitimate Asus reps on here including Asus_NA. I worked with Asus_NA to RMA two devices (one died from FOTA and the other, ~99% perfect, had a problem with adjusting the backlight) and they provided me free shipping via Asus fedex delivery, they were able to confirm when my package arrived at their facility and also updated me, on here, about when my replacement will ship out followed very shortly by an email from Asus with the packing list and tracking number. My newest transformer arrived yesterday.
So if Asus_NA ends up contacting you then they're legitimate.
However, the user that sent you the message seems to way not legitimate and i'd report it ASAP. Get them banned for trying to rob someone.
The three legitimate Asus reps on these forums are Asus_NA, Eric Liu, Rich @ Asus. Their might be a fourth, Rick @ Asus. I've worked mostly with Asus_NA.
Jeez
I am glad you got suspicious. That would totally suck to send the whole setup to a scammer. I guess no place is safe. Sorry to hear you are having problems though. My second TF101, serial number B50...... works great. Good luck.
Thanks Guys, these friendly and helpful responses are why I love this forum, even if I do get the odd phishing PM!
I haven't heard anything back from that so-called Asus person, so will report that private message so a mod can look into it - anyone know who I should be talking to? I had a quick look in the message to see if there was a link to report it, but couldn't find one....
Thanks again everyone.
Scammer...
look at that persons posts
"I had the same problem, then, I call to ASUS.
Their reply is they will upgrade server by 5/20."
"Oh~ I go to the ASUS official website to find th following.
One year of Unlimited ASUS WebStorage, two USB ports, SD and Micro SD card readers for easy sharing & storage expendability
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_...sformer_TF101/"
"thank you, will try on my device"
sound like a ASUS rep to anyone? Not even close.. report his/her ass
but, come to think about it, some people have made claims that when theyve spoken to ASUS, theyre clueless...lol
maybe he/she was forwarding something to you? (im trying to be optimistic..lol)

Those were exactly the posts that roused my suspicions! I always seem to be a victim of really poor phishing scams, and as I've worked in IT for 12 years, I consider myself a bit wiser than most to scams like this!
Hell, I once got one of those Nigerian Scam emails - except it wasn't an email, it was an actual letter and had a stamp on it and everything! I feel sorry for the poor chumps who aren't a cynic like me and get caught out by this stuff!
Who should I report it to? (the Asus Scammer, not the Nigerians! )

I got the same PM from the same user - "Kimi_Q"..
I just assumed by the broken Engrish - and all of the support posts that they were an Asus 1st line trying to point people to the proper support - but I was still suspicious..
As others have said, I'd never give any one from a forum any private info via PM (or other).
I got that pm and did respond to it. Definitely suspicious but not really very private info. Haven't heard anything further.

You'd be surprised. Using just an email address it's often possible to figure out their address and more. If you have an RMA processing and they have that information they could call Asus and pretend to be you, then say they've moved house or want the delivery to their work address, and boom, your stuff goes elsewhere!
Just an example, but you can't be too careful. A few google/facebook/directory enquires searches, and you can find out loads of information about someone, enough to convince a company when you phone them.
That may not be happening at all, but be careful about giving your details out to people you don't know.

I replied to the PM too. I got a call today from a 510 number but couldnt answer as I was in a meeting. Calling the number back got to ASUS support main line, but I didnt know where to go from there, so I hung up. Now can they spoof caller IDs too, must be a elaborate scam for sure
Update: I got the call again. I spoke to a live person, who set me up with an RMA for the dock. The RMA # given to me was trackable through ASUS site, and I received a free FEDEX shipping label addressed to Asus in CA, USA. I told him about this thread, and he asked if I could vouch for the legitimacy of the PMs that many of us received. PM me if you need any other details.

Here's how the story goes:
I bought a brand new MDA Pro a few months ago. I tried to use it as a satnav with iGO but of course that was not possible because the 64mb RAM of the device was not enough. So I decided to upgrade to 128 mb of RAM and I started searching here in xda-developers. I read the section of the Wiki about upgrading and also I found a couple of threads. Well I found out that the best option for me was to send my device to a guy called SHAKAL007 who is located in Czech Repuplic which is the nearest to Greece where I live.
His name was in the wiki's list about the shops around the world that can do the RAM upgrade. I contacted him via email and he replied me immediately to all my questions after a few minutes (very suprising!). He told me that he would need a couple of days to finish the upgrade (software and hardware part) and that he wants 74 Euros for the upgrade and the chips including the P&P fees to send the pda back to me. I found the price very reasonable and agreed to pay him via Paypal immediately as he asked me and the next day I posted my precious device via registered mail.(How stupid I was that I paid extra money for registered post).
After a few days he told me that he received the device and as soon as possible he would do the upgrade and he would send me my pda back to me. I waited a few days but no news from SHAKAL007. I sent him another email asking him if he has finished the upgrade. A few days later he responded to my emails (in the meanwhile I had sent him a few more emails) and he told me that the hardware part of the upgrade has finished but he had a few “software” problems that he finally succeeded to solve and that he would send the pda back to me. That was all.
Please notice that the pda was sent to him on the 26th of November and after more than a whole month I have sent him tons of emails but get no response. In the beginning he claimed that he drives a truck and cannot be online because he is not home. Well I think that is a kind of trick so we dont bother him. That's all RUBBISH!!! I know that he logins in xda-developers all the time. And when I see he's online in xda-developers, I send him emails in his personal email address and of course I get no response but he is just keeping ignoring me.
Hey guys who is this SHAKAL007? As I can see he has only 4 posts since 2006 he became a member of our very helpful to everybody community and all of them are related to the upgrade. The posts are about advertising his business. So in my opinion, this guy has not offered anything to this community but he just uses it to make money and steal other people's devices. I dont know why but perhaps he sells them to Ebay(?). The most funny (or tragical) was that when I was sending all these emails and he was ignoring me I was sending him private messages here in xda-developers as theseas asking him about info on the upgrade. Of course he didnt know that "theseas" is the guy from Greece that has sent him his uni. So the same time that he was ignoring my emails, the same time he was answering me to all my (fake of course) questions here in xda-developers through private messages. Then I was started to think that SHAKAL007 is a SCAMMER because he was still looking for other victims to steal their devices, to do them what? Sell them to Ebay and make money?
I was the best customer and paid him promptly the same day via Paypal. Well SHAKAL007 is not only a SCAMMER but IMPUDENT because he asked me to pay him 74 Euros just to steal my device!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course I know that the mistake is mine and that I am responsible for that but I saw his ****ing name in the wiki. I thought he is confirmed. Who wrote his name in the wiki list, I suppose that he did it for himself.
Perhaps I am wrong but I feel that I had to open this thread just to share my bad experience with you and help you not to loose your pda and your money because as I told you he asks money too!!!!
Perhaps I am wrong but I told you exactly what has happened to me until now and all that I know and have seen about Him until now.
IF I AM WRONG AND WILL EVER RECEIVE MY DEVICE UPGRADED AND IN FULL WORKING ORDER THEN I WILL EDIT THIS POST AND APOLOGISE TO SHAKAL007. I THINK THIS IS FAIR FOR ME AND FOR HIM.
BUT FOR NOW MY ADVICE IS NOT SEND YOUR PRECIOUS UNIVERSAL TO THIS SCAMMER!!!!!!!
MOD EDIT: Removed real life names, see my post below.
this post is reserved for me and I will edit it to apologise to SHAKAL007 if I ever receive my device upgraded and in full working order.
That is very sad hearing about your device. Why dont you approch the Paypal customer support to file a fraud ? Paypal will have their local branches of the service provider to take a legal action. Try to include Paypal in this case as soon as possible. I think he should be banned from our beloved community if found guity.
Well as I can see right now SHAKAL007 signed in in xda-developers today and his last activity here was at 6:44 AM. Of course he has seen the thread because I have posted a visitor's message in his user profile but still no response even after opening a whole thread about him. Also still no response to my emails.

Dealt with Paypal after someone on these forums took my money and admitted he 'forgot' to send the Universal to me. I asked for my money to be returned to me, but he stopped contact and kept my money. Well, Paypal investigated, concluded in my favor and recovered.... USD 0.77 out of USD$150 I paid. And that was the end of it.

Thanx for your support. As you can see this SCAMMER doesn't ignore only me but ALL OF US who are honest and genuine members of this community. I suppose that he thinks that we ALL are stupid because after a whole thread that I have opened he keeps on ignoring us. As I told you maybe I am mistaken and I am wrong while accusing him. Why he doesnt post a reply just to protect himself and his business he has setup in our beloved forum?
PLEASE CHECK HIS USER PROFILE AND NOTICE THAT HE LOGGED IN TODAY and his last activity was at 6:44 AM.
His user profile: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=276576&vmid=8281
Diamond owner here, but couldn't help but notice this thread as I was scrolling down. This is his supposed address taken from the guest comments in his user profile. The road doesn't seem to match up with the area he mentioned:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&h....077646&spn=0.003338,0.010514&z=17&iwloc=addr
Maybe someone can find his IP address and 'pay' him a visit?
EDIT: Just noticed the following. But street number doesn't match up with the provided address.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&h....081852&spn=0.053364,0.168228&z=13&iwloc=addr
EDIT2: To get the second result, just type 'vitezna' in Google Maps. Something's fishy. I don't understand the address standard of Czech Reublic so maybe a Czech guy can make sense of it.
Waow that sounded really strange. well i guess admins and mods should beaware of his ip incase he fleds his account and goes under another new account here at xda.. i hope you guys will manage to solve this mystery and i hope justice will be brought forward..
AS much as I sympathise with this situation we cannot allow sensitive info such as that posted to be on our forum. There isnt any evidence which shows beyond a doubt that this guy is a scammer, suggest further action is taken along the correct routes.
The info has been removed so xda-developers.com is not in any silly legal situations later on due to this thread. I trust members will comply with this small request?
Has anybody contacted the website host, ISP of the whois entry etc...??

as i have already told to all of the guys here i thank them for their support. perhaps mrvanx's opinion to remove personal and sensitive info is correct but i dont think that it matters because all this information is in the section of the wiki about htc uni ram upgrade. this info has been provided by the xda member that has my device right now exactly for this reason: to be able to approach him so we can upgrade our devices. also you can find this info in his personal site which is dedicated to the upgrade. the link of this site is also in the wiki.
I also agree with mrvanx that we are not sure if this guy is a scammer. I have said it in my first post but until now from all i now and from all that has happened to me by him this guy is a scammer and for me he will be a scammer until the opposite will be proved. And the opposite for me is to get back my device upgraded and in full working order.
Hi all, sorry to hear the bad news, but jus my bit... Mods, wold it not be safe to "remove" shakals007´s name from the upgraders list in the wiki???
Again, just my bit, don´t mean to annoy anyone...
All the best and good luck in getting your device back...
Willy
Here are the steps you need to take if you paid by PayPal.
1. File a dispute claim with PayPal (You are allowed to do this for 45 days from the payment. After 45 days you are out of luck).
2. Go to the open dispute claim and then escalate the claim for PayPal review (You can escalate it any time after filling a dispute claim. The maximum time allowed is 20 days, after that you are out of luck).
3. He has to respond to PayPal. Describe your situation in the PayPal claim.
4. Either he has to ship the item to you with tracking number or you will get your money refunded.
Hope this is helpful!
KOR!
He will receive 74 euro refund and than what? Paypal will not cover the money that hasnt been sent through it...
My advice to theseas, try to go to your police station and report stolen phone to them with IMEI number of your uni if you have a box or a phone store bill... They have the authotiries to forward your request to the police in any EU country. It's a long shot but you never know...
I lost my uni last summer. I set on my scooter, put uni in front pocket and when I arrived to the destination uni was gone Real stupid, and tomake things worse i diddnt have the box with IMEI number so th police could find it easily in my country...
I have already filed a claim through Paypal but I also agree with Duke Nukem that Paypal isnt gonna give me my uni back but Paypal is just the first step. Have also sent again an email to SHAKAL007 and I hope to get a response this time. I am sure that he follows this thread, at least at weekend if he really works as a driver and is at home only at weekend as he has told me but this time he is not stupid to login with his user name. Perhaps I shouldnt have written that I know when he logins in xda-developers by watching his user profile. Now he knows and he wont use his account to login.

Well I have said in this forum that I didnt like accusing you but tell me what you would do man if you had sent your pda and your money to someone that doesnt respond to your emails for a whole month. It's quite simple what you would think of him. As I can understand from your automate translated english you say that you were not online. No man you were online here quite often (I am not fool and nobody here is) and as I have said everytime I knew that you were online here in xda-developers I was sending you emails and you were ignoring me. Even the time that I opened this thread you logged in and of course you saw everything but even then you didnt say anything. Everybody knows that you were online that time. If you really had problems why you didnt tell me? Why you didnt tell me when I was almost begging you for an answer to my emails. I was begging you because I didnt want to open this thread. I am not sure that I would get an answer from you or my device (I havent received it yet) if i hadnt opened this thread. Well I dont have to dispute with you about anything, I dont really care anymore. The only thing that matters for me is to receive my device. And I am waiting for facts because I am tired of words. Words are for free, dont cost anything.

I suppose here you mean that you apologise because you were NOT able to send the pda back to me earlier. Because 17th of January is quite late, it has been almost 2 months.
@SHAKAL007: you might just have cleaned your name Hope all goes well and theseas get's back his phone, he really have been concerned. I retreat my words and accusations. Due to your business i hope you could be more answerable when you get questions and find sometime to explain deadlines you will hold. that would make the customer more peacefull
well i do not understand your english fully by what you wrote on this thread but i believe you used a form of language translator on the internet..

was he a tea leaf or just a bad businessman
I'm glad that it finished

Is the device OK? Is there 128mb?
Like me, many of you have send support emails (via their website) to Elocity. And
like me, I'm sure none of you received responses. Well, that has change as of today.
In response to a message I sent them on 05-Jan-2011, I received the following email. I find this quite amusing and still don't expect them to write back:

Yeah, it is somewhat amusing, I was just posting about the auto replies that started coming today. I think they need to pay Dexter nicely and give him one of each tablet they plan to release. He's given their product more support than they have and doesn't even own one.

I couldn't agree more! They should be compensating Dex for all the hours he's put in to improve their a7.
I just emailed acer and asked them to revise their bootloader policy.
If all of us would Do so we might get them to reconsider their policy.
It worked for the htc community so why not for us?
I hope you all will support this action so the impact will be bigger.
We also might want to bring this idea to other a500 support forums.
Kind regards.
also reply to this thread on their facebook wall. http://www.facebook.com/Acer/posts/10150179327172544

Yah and dont forget to mention that ASUS is kickin their a$$ on posted files and bootloader policy which is why their outsellin them even though the HW's not as good IMO.
I've lost the rag, and sent them this.
I've been up front with them but the device is mine to do with a i please...
Dear Acer Support,
I would like someone to contact me regarding the Iconia A500 tablet which i have purchased around 2 weeks ago.
I am having issues with the update which has been sent out and it will not install due to file checksums mismatches. I have been using android since the first ever handset was release and i find your methods of updating the tablet or the OS bewildering inline with every other update method for other devces up until this one. Over the last 3 years, i have NEVER had any problems updating an Android device, until now.
I would like to know how to restore my handset completely as the 'reset' option on the side of the device simply wipes the data, the integrity of the OS remains unchanged.
I need a way to factory restore my unit in order for me to receive the update, which i am assuming includes fixes for the hastily pushed out Honeycomb os and critical security patches for android holes.
If i do not receive prompt a swift technical support of an advanced level i will be returning the product as i currently view this a waste of 500 Euros. I will not hesitate to purchse the Motorola Xoom, which appears to be on Android 3.1 already...
I can be contacted on (removed) or on (Removed)@gmail.com.
I would appreciate a call TODAY, or it will be handed back today at 5.30pm.
Kind Regards,
i just did a quick reply on that Facebook link. Thnx gunnyman!
Anyone got acer contact details that we all should be emailing?
I am spamming their facebook!
I used this link:

Eddited the link as it send the questions in my name...lol.
Well...got the reaction i expected and not the one i hoped for.
Re-thinking whether to keep it or sell it in favor of the asus transformer...
Discussion Thread ---------------------------------------------------------------Response (Sherina PB) - 05/27/2011 07:27 AM Dear karim kalschoven,
Thank you for contacting Acer. My name is Sherina and Badge NumberGWSI1020. I'll be happyto assist you.
I understand you wanted help unlockingbootloader on your Acer ICONIAA500.
Currently we do not have provision to have this unlocked and we are unsure on any probable policychange on this, you may check back later to see for any updates.
For further clarifications please feel free to visit our website: http://support.acer.com/Have a great day!
Respectfully, Acer Online Technical Support
And this is my reply:
Hello, this anwser by your company inspired just me to sell the acer a500 and get me a asus transformer. I will post in the community forums and spread what Acer's standpoint is and will advise all doubters not to get the A500 if they love a community supporting brand! Great job Acer..this was the last products Ill ever buy from you!
What's the email address that we should be mailing? I found nothing on the acer contact page.
email sent...
Uninstalling a couple of apps removing the facility to update is enough for me. Always defended Acer when people have been quick to moan about build quality with their laptops but if they don't sort this out, I'll think again.
I just sent an e-mail too...
We should write a petition as they did on Motorola and HTC...
Lets all petition this. Sick of not able to install custom roms.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Done!!!! Hope this helpes.
can anyone post this on Acer FB or st with a message: HTC FTW. ACER FTL
http://androidandme.com/2011/05/new...longer-lock-the-bootloaders-on-their-devices/
Also posted on that Facebook post (and mentioned how HTC has reversed their bootload lock policy based on customer feedback)
I posted too. And then had a chat with customer support, which was as unhelpful as it could get. They promised to get back to me, however I have my doubts.
Reproducing below:
-- NOTE: skipping polite introduction
Govindan Sharanji: I will certainly provide you the information in this regards ####.
AD: thank you
Govindan Sharanji: Could you please stay online for two minutes while I retrieve the information for you?
-- NOTE: at this point I had hopes
AD: Sure, no problem
Govindan Sharanji: Thank you for being on hold. I really appreciate your patience.
AD: No worries
Govindan Sharanji: I need to refer you to phone support to resolve your issue.
AD: Ok
Govindan Sharanji: Our Voice Support are available on Monday - Friday 5am- 12 Midnight. You can reach our Voice Department at this numbers : 1-800-571-2237.
AD: I understand.. However I'm not located somewhere where I have access to 1-800 numbers
AD: Can I get an email with the info?
Govindan Sharanji: Shall I email the chat session to your email ID at ########, so that you can go through the information at your convenient time?
AD: The source code for the android kernel should be made available on request, according tothe GPL
AD: No, thanks, that's not necessary. I would like to get access to the kernel source code, and I was hoping you guys could send me an email later with a link
AD: or something similar
Govindan Sharanji: Sure.
-- NOTE: Maybe there's hope?
AD: Thank you
Govindan Sharanji: ####, to conclude we have suggested to email the required information and this should help you fix the issue. If there are no additional questions on this topic, I will close the chat session.
Govindan Sharanji: Thank you for using Acer Live Chat. Please feel free to chat again anytime.
Govindan Sharanji: Have a great day and take care.
AD: One more question - are there any plans for Acer to provide a recovery image for the Iconia Tab A500?
AD: Something that would restore it to factory defaults and reflash the software
AD: And also are there any plans to unlock the bootloaders, as HTC is doing?
AD: The developer community pretty much perceives you as developer-unfriendly, and it would be great to change that
Govindan Sharanji: As of now the recovery image are not provided you can get back to us for future updates.
AD: Well.. Ok.. that's unfortunate
AD: Oh well, thank you for your help
AD: Have a nice day
Let's rock it. This is a game. All for one, One for all.
PS: Spamming their chat services now. This feeling is good.
Facebook----m, you youngsters.......................
bad publicity will bring upon very swift change
Just a word of advice, let's be polite, but firmly request our rights (re: the kernel) and show them we're unhappy about their attitude. I seriously doubt the guys in support are to blame for, so let's treat them nicely and hopefully they will escalate.
Edit:
Misunderstanding.....requested for lock/delete
There are ASUS reps on this board. They monitor the threads very closely. I was an original adopter of the TF101, and had contact with a couple. So have many others. In fact, we had access to early beta firmware through them. In subsequent calls with Asus, I learned that these folks are 100% legit, and it shows how involved Asus appears to be with getting it right for us.
I don't see anything in that post that makes me suspicious. Nowhere does it say to send in your device to an unknown location. In fact, if you were told to send it in by one of these PMs, it would be to an Asus facility, not 'Bob Tabletstealer'. You could easily cross-reference the address if you were skeptical.

If you recieve a PM from him with somethign like this
I betcha his intention is for someone to be tricked into PM'ing him and sending their TF101 to him so he can get it for free
can we get a mod to ban him and his known associated IP or somethign? I fear that this may eventually snag someone's TF101.
This has already been mentioned before like a few weeks ago.........

although not specifically asking
someone who might not know this might contact back the user and believe that he is from asus since he still signs his PM with Asus Computer Inc.
and then the scam springs into place....especially if the other person doesn't check if he is sending to an authorised asus RMA centre
I still believe that Kimi_Q should be given an infraction if not a ban for signing his PM's with "Asus Computer Inc" since he doesn't work for them in any capacity

Did you read the thread linked? A user got an RMA# from kimi_q that was legit in ASUS's online tracking system and a call tag to the ASUS repair center. The OP also showed where the user redirected him to using an asus owned email.
The name also sounds familiar. I think it was kimi_q who was one of the ones pushing out beta software based on complaints in a thread in the forum.
It seems legit. Probably not the most professional way to go about it and it creates some suspicion but it appears there are legit ASUS reps or techs browsing here. Being wary is always a good thing but you need to get better info before calling "BS" on someone. That message he/she sent you is identical to the pre-canned response from ASUS regarding the issue and, in no way, is asking for any personal information or for your tablet. In fact, the "please contact your local asus service center" is passing you off to someone else.
I can vouch for the user. He is indeed from Asus. After I sent him my phone and email, he called me up from an Asus number and set me up with an RMA to send in both TF and dock. He also upgraded me to next day shipping, and I had my brand new replacements in under a week shipped from Asus HQ in Fremont CA. Also you can reach him at [email protected] which goes straight to the TF support instead of the general ASUS customer support.
in any case
I'll change the thread title and PM the relevant mod to lock/delete this thread
been scammed before...so yes I'm a bit wary
cheers all

I contacted the moderator:
I have the strangest suspicion that this member, kp263 was trying a scam on me. I posted a message regarding help to fix my bricked LG D858HK, and kp263 contacted me by private messaging requesting. After I sent my number, I received a message, saying; I'm always offline on WhatsApp. I responded; I normally turn my phone off 12.00 am to 8.00 am UK time because I don't want to be disturb at those times when sleeping, but I'm available all the other times. I also mentioned; I'm using another phone, as the LG is bricked (of course). I started to get suspicious and asked; how are you going to repair phone in the UK when you're in India? But, I didn't get a reply, so I contact him again. So he informed me that was away for a few days.
Could this member have been leading me on to a scam? Check this member out - could be dangerous...! But Moderator doesn't seem to be concerned...

My response to moderator:
Speculation!? As a moderator, you don't seem to be concerned regarding the safety of users on your site! This dude wanted to gain access and control my PC and could have stolen information via a piece of software he wanted me to install, and you're not concern about that!? Or, could it be that he may be connected with you/your site?
The problem is with my phone, so why did he wanted to access my PC? Why didn't he send me the instruction by private message (like I asked him to), or better yet, publicly, so that others can see, who may be experiencing same or similar problems, so they can refer it his cure? Why didn't he respond to several questions...I'd put to him regarding my concern of him accessing my PC?
If you're not going to check him out, I'll have to make this public so that others can be aware of this

you should never give out your number and install software you don't know what it does.
Use common sense, you made a mistake to give out your number and if you installed software you don't know what it does nobody else to blame but yourself.
Sorry to sound harsh but you need to be careful what you do as well and protect yourself

I'm sure there are novices that use this site that doesn't know the risks... But, I'm not a novice as far as the internet is concerned. I know the dangers and this why I didn't download the software and questioned the dude.
So I'm in a jam with my phone and asked for some genuine help and was hoping I would get it in return, at least so I thought. These scammers should look into by the moderator/s and not ignored but rooted out; because not everyone would be aware of this sort of practice on xda, and is not a matter of common sense. Are you saying you've never given a stranger your mobile number? I sure you have. So where is your common sense that? :silly:

Do you mean this user https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=7532374 ?
Do you have any idea how many accusations are made similar to this on this site of almost 8 million users? So YES we need proof of wrong doing. The message you reported was a simple Whatsapp request. No where did he ask for access to your computer. He did suggest he could fix your problem with Teamviewer. Generally these members are not scammers but are trying to sell you their repair service. When we have proof of attempted sales, then the accounts are removed.
Thank you for bringing this member to our attention and adding to our investigation already in progress.

This dude was shady... If I wasn't alert and aware of these type of scams and fraud, I would have let him have his wicked way and could have scammed me. I not gonna deal with someone in India when am in the UK and especially the way he wanted me too. No way!
As a good and responsible citizen and trying to help to stomp out scamming and fraud, my original message to you was to make you aware of the situation..., but your replied was sarcastically... When I get scamming emails and forward them on to the banks, etc, they thank me for informing them - unlike you. Your statement above (Thank you for bringing this member...) would have been just nice in the first place. There is another guy on your team (who was very nice - not sarcastic) that I sent the message to in the first place but he instructed me to contact the moderator because he didn't deal with that area. So, it seems that there are nice guys amongst you all.

Sure...but as I said...they generally try to sell you a service under the radar of XDA moderators because selling of anything on this site is not allowed except in the paid app section. That is the shady part. We remove these types daily once we get evidence of them asking for money. The repair is usually legitimate. Thanks for adding to our evidence against this member.
So others thank you and do nothing, but I tell you we need evidence and then do something...which would you prefer. By the way I am still awaiting an answer to that PM.
@Soundboy There are many legitimate people out there that will help people through teamviewer out of the kindness of their heart. So next time present more evidence than a Whatsapp request and offer to go on teamviewer. Back in the Epic 4G days of 2011 I helped someone through it and know of another good friend that helped members through teamviewer all day long and only for whatever they wanted to donate to him, even if it was nothing. So your paranoia was insufficient to act on without evidence.
I 100% agree with @DJ_MiX . I can't believe I have to say this, but, this world is full of nefarious people out to do you harm. If you expect any website to be able to protect you from every single user, you are in for a shock. Welcome to the internet. :highfive:
Receiving a private message instead of answering your question publicly in the forums should have been a large red flag and warning sirens for you. That's like getting cold called at your house and the person asking for financial information.
These forums are not for one-on-one help. They are for public questions, answers, and discussions so that everyone benefits. I personally would only use private messaging with users who have a long history on the forums. And even then, there's rarely a reason to do so.
You seem nice and you seem like you mean well, just be vigilant and do your due diligence whenever possible. Evil folks prey on the naive. I will personally not be able to help you out with your particular issue, but good luck!

I'm always aware and suspicious about private messages, emails, letters and phone calls I get from people I don't know offering their services, e.g. like paying upfront. I always tell them to take a hike! I get them all the time; even from these pretty-young-nice-figure-babes on facebook. It's like; "You're a gorgeous babe; but why you want to friend an old fart like me, old enough to be your granddad or even your great grandad?" They're gone, man! So yes; I'm an internet savvy and on the money! :highfive:

Sure...but as I said...they generally try to sell you a service under the radar of XDA moderators because selling of anything on this site is not allowed except in the paid app section. That is the shady part. We remove these types daily once we get evidence of them asking for money. The repair is usually legitimate. Thanks for adding to our evidence against this member.
So others thank you and do nothing, but I tell you we need evidence and then do something...which would you prefer. By the way I am still awaiting an answer to that PM.

Regarding your PM... I've already responded to it yesterday via reply to the email. But since it seems you haven't received it, here it is again: I did google Teamviewer...and that is why I didn't download it to my PC. And yes, I do get lots of Prince in Nigeria..., etc, etc and phone calls too but I don't fall for them. So no, not foolish. I'm not new to the internet but on your site. In fact, I'm a savvy on the internet and know of the dangers.
The account countfox: because when I first join I made a spelling mistake with my username and after about 4 times of asking Brendon to edited he failed to deal with it, so I set up another account. But it was changed by another person in the end after I contacted him. So, I kept on using Soundboy because my message was already on it. If there was a way for me to edit or delete them myself I would have done so instead of relying on you guys. Anyway, you can delete both of them because they no use to me now.
Cheers!
